Polyamorous, Fae-ish, fated mates - need I say more? This was so surprisingly good, I just couldn't put it down! This book includes lots of great stuff beyond just the romance too, like: found family, lots of unique 'pets' (I'm a sucker for animals included in books), and various magical powers.

Fair warning on a couple of things though that did bother me but are spoilers:

5⭐️. Just WOW. What a debut! I haven’t felt this absorbed in a fantasy romance in a long time (and I read A LOT). Where to begin…

My unhinged thoughts (spoiler free!):

• The writing is EXCELLENT

• The plot is gripping

• The character development and relationships are so finely done

• FFM poly romance—slow burn, and absolutely a LOVE story. FEELINGS❤️‍🔥

• The found family side of the narrative is elite. From the first scene with them together you can feel it and it only grows throughout the novel

• Female power and rage. I will leave it at that to avoid spoilers—aside from a quick I cannot WAIT for Lyrik’s book (she is absolute 🔥🔥🔥)

• What tips it over to being a clear 5⭐️ read for me is that the world and characters feel real. Tangible. It’s SO well realised—you get the sense that the world existed long before this story and will go on well after it.

• I read this via audiobook—the narration is fantastic! I’ve been spoiled with a lot of duet narration lately (my fave style) so the last few single narration books I’ve read have felt disappointing—absolutely not the case here! I was enthralled throughout.

• This debut has right out of the gate secured CC Davie as an auto buy author for me—I think I went ahead and preordered the next two about 20% of the way into this one!

What you can expect:

✨ high fantasy world—beautifully realised

⚔️ adventure

🪄 magic

🏳️‍🌈 LGBTQ rep

❤️ slow burn sapphic poly romance (FFM)

🐴 one horse

🥶 shared body heat to survive

❤️‍🩹 FEELINGS

💕 Found family (like a warm “I’ve found my people” hug)

😂 banter and laughs

💗 fated mates

🐎 Shadow the dark, grumpy, protective, mama-hearted warrior horse (and her murder fluff sidekick 😂)

🌶️🌶️🌶️ Spice! But I would note it’s not gratuitous—it always furthers character development and the plot (not that there is anything wrong with gratuitous spice! Just clarifying this for anyone who chooses their reads for a good plot/spice balance—this is absolutely well balanced)

🛑 Please check your content warnings! There is on page SA and some other heavy themes and content that some readers may wish to avoid: I personally thought it was incredibly sensitively handled and not gratuitous and anchored in the plot. But do proceed with caution ❤️

NOTE: for my fellow cis-het folks who consider themselves queer allies but to this point have only read MF in terms of the central romance plot of their fantasy romance—I challenge you to read this book. It’s so beautifully and warmly written, you will love it—trust me 🙌

This book was PHENOMENAL & I don’t say that lightly. I found the writing addictive, the world building seem-less & the action scenes cinematic.
This is a dark epic fantasy with beautiful queer representation, dangerous animal friends with their own personalities & delightful feminine rage as a centre point.
It tackles heavy subjects with care & finesse, showing these scenes with sensitivity - they are written because it is central to the plot but not grotesquely detailed (although I would urge anyone wanting to read this book to check the content warnings before starting)
The world the author has created feels tangible.
I felt like I could completely trust her with where the story was going even when everything seemed dire - & it really gets quite desperate.
The characters feel real & their struggles weighted in truth.
I have found a new favourite series & a new auto buy author.

2.5 stars for me unfortunately ☹️ I really wanted to like this book and was super excited after seeing all the good reviews but the writing style just didn’t gel with me at all. I like when we get different POVs but in this book there was no clear distinction like a name above a chapter (probably because there are multiple shifts in POVs throughout the chapter and even in different paragraphs which I hated 🤢). It made it confusing at times and I don’t feel like I really got into the characters for this reason.

Also the romance for me just wasn’t it 😫 I got mother father and daughter vibes from them not romance?! It made me feel a bit icky because she was portrayed so young and them so old and wise. Definitely won’t be reading the other books sadly.

Y'allllll this was fabulous omg

Summary: Amylia Sylvers is forced to navigate a new life after being taken as a ward of Lord Drakon after her parents are slaughtered. Raised by Drakon to be a wife for his son Mika, Amylia is obedient and ready to marry Mika when we meet her. Then Attica, Kingdom of the Wytchlings, moves to rise again, forcing previously alienated territories to unite. As people tie themselves together, Amylia's life is undone by secrets long hidden. Secrets that have her questioning everything and forcing her into this new life that she must navigate as new information continues to surface.

Starting off, I received this as a free audiobook from the narrator but that does not sway my review. This genuinely a fantastic fantasy book with a romance backstory. The writing is great, though towards the end there are some phrases that were repeated a little too often for my liking (but not enough to take a star off—I tend to hone in on repetitive words/phrasing in books that's why the authors I've beta read for love me haha).

The world-building is grand but not overwhelming, there are very few info dumps and they're usually enveloped into dialogue and conversation to help them flow with the story rather than just blatant dumps of backdrop. The characters are well-rounded and solid in their uniqueness and the magic system is fleshed out enough without being bombarded (that in and of itself is also unique and well done!)

Getting into the void of my notes app, this book had me in all caps quite a few times. It also is the most notes I've taken for a book like ever? I think? (Except for maybe ACOTAR or ACOMAF but still). The first chapter is so gripping, it really sets a great stage for the rest of the book. I went into the book knowing it would be sapphic but I didn't have any other knowledge apart from that so some of my first few notes are trying to guess who Amylia's love interest would be (BOY WAS I IN FOR A RIDE).

I absolutely adore the dynamics between Gryffin, Cecily, Rogue and Lyrik. The teasing and jokes are great and definitely add some comedic relief. (Rogue and Lyrik's banter is absolute gold). Overall, a fabulous debut book and I cant wait to pick up the next one!

If you grab this book be prepared for LGBTQ+ rep (sapphic and poly (MFF)), off-page death of parents, on page s3x (not too much, some explicit some closed door/fade to black, used to further the storyline and characters), pregnancy trope (<—usually an automatic no for me) and on page SA (not very graphic).

The next few bits are a lil spoilery so this is your warning to LOOK AWAY NOW:

Hmmmm i wanted to love this because it's FFM and I love me a good sapphic relationship but it really did feel like a parent/child dynamic. The main three stopped doing it for me around 50%. Also, if a man used the nickname "bug" on me mid sexy time, I'd kick him. They both had really weird juvenile nicknames for Amylia and it really threw me. Add in the unclear POV changes and you have a really confusing ride.

In saying that, the supporting cast were all super interesting. I loved Rogue, Raven and Lyrik and will probably keep reading for more of them. The found family and the feminine rage were both really working for me. Overall, this was a really cool concept, I just think it could have been executed much better.

Honestly loved the plot! It had great twists and kept you captivated. The spice was nice not to much but enough to get you 🥵. All and all great story! I couldn't put the book down (I read it in a day 🤣) Can't wait for the next book!

This was my first book by C.C. Davie and I devoured it. I want to start by saying if you read the description and decide it sounds interesting enough, I strongly suggest reading the content warnings because there are definitely a few things that could be triggering for some.

The book opens up with a happy family and their dad teaching Amylia how to use her elemental powers. The tragedy strikes and her and her brother Rayvn end up in the care of Lord Drakon who claims he was close friends with their parents. Fast forward almost a decade and they are now adults. Amylia is set to marry Drakon's son Mica and life is good.

One day Sylkies come to town and Amylia finds herself super attracted to Cecily and Gryffon, a beautiful elemental couple who have great powers and are part of a warrior family that support each other well. They also bring with them knowledge of things Amylia never thought about which ends up drastically changing the life she thought for herself. A series of events later ends up with Cecily and Gryffon bringing Amylia to their home and teaching her to use her buried powers to their full potential. This also causes a rift between two nations as they both signed a peace treaty but one party decided they were going to violate it for their own means.

I really enjoyed this story. I opened it and jumped right in and had issues putting it down the few days it took me to read it. The world building is fantastic. There's a map at the beginning of the book but I was easily able to imagine the world being described. The pacing of the story definitely worked well for me and there were no instances where I felt there were huge information dumps. The relationship between Amylia, Cecily and Gryffon was so organic and loving and sexy from beginning to end. I also loved the entire community of Astyrern and her brother Rayvn was incredibly supportive of his sister.

There were a couple of things I didn't like however which is why I took a star off. Amylia's character development started off so strong and she seemed to be building to be quite a force but then when something bad happens to her she just gives up and that area of the book got really dark and I felt it was dragged out too long. I also didn't like the very end at all.

Overall, it definitely was a great and engaging read. I'm not sure if I'm interested enough (the ending was ridiculous) to read book 2 yet but I'll definitely keep C.C. Davie on my radar.

UMMM THAT EPILOGUE.. my jaw dropped! What a twist!

description

This book was a treat from start to finish.. it had me questioning my sexuality (hi hello Gryff, Cess, Lyrik and Rogue). What I really loved about this book though was the female characters, each character was a bad ass in their own way and I was f*cking here for it.

While reading this book I was dealing with an epic book hangover from Fourth Wing and Manacled and all I can say is that I think i've been officially cured!

If you've been sleeping on this book, don't.. you won't regret it! Thank god I was smart and bought the other books in the series so I can dive in to continue this journey!

Sapphic polyamorous fantasy and reads like an epic fantasy TV show or movie. Very fast paced third person narrative. Animals with attitude and personality. Side characters that really carried the weight of the world on its back.

I’d say that this is more fantasy with a minor romance subplot despite the often graphic spice scenes (which were GREAT).

Definitely not MY kind of fantasy that I’d normally gravitate to, but definitely good despite that fact.

This book was a really good read. Some dark elements at times and kinda gut-wrenching with some heavy or distressing themes discussed, but without the intention of shock value. The shit these characters went through was there for the plot aspect and the author handled them with care. A lot of people have said they felt safe with the author through these hard times, and that I definitely did. If you’re gonna read this book, absolutely check out your trigger warnings.

The world-building was great, SO many characters but all developed in interesting and intricate ways, all with a very notable unique personality to each other. The found family feeling throughout this entire book was beautiful, although I feel developed realllllyyyy quickly. It was like as soon as these characters met, they would’ve died for each other, lol. There was no real build up to these relationships. The animal friends in this book were EXQUISITE, and so well described and they had as much personality as the characters themselves. This is also the first book I’ve read centred around a throuple/FFM poly relationship from the MC’s POV and it was beautiful. You could tell how much they loved each other. As I said before though, the romance didn’t touch me quite as much as I would’ve liked as I felt the relationship started really quickly and felt kinda insta-lovey, but I guess it did work for this book and I felt invested nonetheless.

The reason I’ve given this 4 stars instead of 5 is because the handful grammatical errors were hard to ignore and the POV swaps were hard to follow, I sometimes didn’t understand who the dialogue was coming from. I think this book would’ve done so well being written in first-person. Also there was a huge chunk in the middle of the book, from around the 30% mark to the 70% mark where nothing really happened. During this it was heavily centred around the love interest and everyone being happy and content. This was fun to read though, but I would’ve liked a little more action throughout the entire book rather than just at the beginning and end. The ending was so bittersweet I didn’t know if I was happy or sad!

If you love a fantasy read, with magic and creatures and high things at stake with some really dark elements, this book will definitely satisfy that. I really did enjoy this book and will be reading the rest of the series. So overall, really really good which I would absolutely recommend but only a few things I personally would change!

FUCK AMYLIA , FUCK HER LOVE INTERESTS ,FUCK HER FAMILY ,FUCK HER FRIENDS. I HATE THIS BOOK SO MUCH

I hated this so much i literately cried while reading 😭

- poor written fight scene

- the worst smut scenes I’ve ever seen on paper , i swear to god that im not joking , like she just came back home after being kidnapped my some dude and the first thing she does with her lover is fuck , like tf ?!

- goofy names ( like tf is lyrik or rogue 💀)

- main character….. how is it possible that someone could be soo ANNOYING , Its absolutely mad. You could tell her that she should be put and hide , but she NEVER LISTENS 😤😤

- the weird pov switching ( and terrible writing)

- weird romance , it just seems weird how the relationship between Gryffon ,Cecily and Amylia , was first shown as a father/mother daughter relationship but then it turned into a love story???!? Thats so weird if you wanted them to be together at the end why make it seem like a adopted family at the beginning?😨( the age difference also pissed me of like extremely , the way Amylia was made to look so young and helpless while her lovers are described to be so old and wise just didn’t seem right for me

I hate this book , im still gonna read the second book one day , i will probably not like it as well but i really don’t like feeling like im missing a piece of a story ,so i really want to finish the story once for all ( im most likely gonna regret

The people writing 5 star reviews are the biggest liar I’ve ever seen , theres no way in hell that they haven’t been paid by the creator .🤮

“I’m going to burn you to dust and dance on the ashes.” Her voice sounded flat. Not a threat, just a statement. “And I will never forget them, no matter what you do to me.”

High fantasy world building
Amazing majestic animal friends
Found family
Feminine rage
Adventure
Magic
Fae
Mates
Battle
Multiple POV

Went into book not really knowing much about it but I saw some amazing fan art from the authors instagram page and was like you know what…let’s see where this goes.

Guys…here I am 1:00am I’m writing this review because I loved it. I loved the journey it took me on. All the main characters are so likeable and I became quickly invested in their journey and Rogue had me cackling which is always a plus.

I will definitely continue this series and will definitely recommend to any and all.

Overall I enjoyed this book and I definitely can't wait to see what happens in the sequel, there were just a few issues that held me back from rating it higher.
I liked the plot and the characters, I thought it was great giving such personality to some of the animal characters and the twist at the end was great! The world building was interesting, although some things could have been explained a bit more thoroughly I felt.
What held this book back for me was the pacing, I felt like some of the bigger events were rushed, while a large part of the book was spent with nothing really happening. Another minor gripe was that sometimes the POV switching got a bit confusing.

5-⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
2.5-🌶️🌶️

- Wars between terrioties
- Secret heir and magics
- LGBTQ/ polyrom
- Multiple POVs

Amliya Sylvers parents were murdered when she was 8 and her brother was three years old. Lord Drakon took them under his protection and took care of them.

Amliya loved Lord's son Mica and raised to marry him and taught to fear the Wytchings (powerful magic wielders, kind of fae). When Lord and Lady Wynters (wytchlings) from the Asteryn visited to forge a allegiance between them, Amliya felt a strange but familiar pull towards them.

She found out she has powers like wytching and learned the truth that Drakon hid her and her brother by inserting a small stone called Helix, eleven years ago when he took them. And Drakon wanted to merge his and her bloodlines so, he forced Amliya to marry Mica. She doesn't want to stay in the keep and fled with the help of Lord and Lady Wynters.

Amilya felt she was truly home at Asteryn and she started to practice her magic which was dormant for her whole life. She also remembered her parents magic bit by bit.

Gruffon and Cecily Wynters are kind enough to love and support her whatever decision she made in her life. Amylia wanted to be with them and spend her life. She made friends in their court and became a part of it!

She was happy but not for long, Drakon showed up and threatened Amliya to go back to them or else he would kill her mother. She had no choice when her loved ones life dangled in front of her so, she went with them and forcibly married Mica. He abused her and kept her hidden in the wing.

Amliya was pregnant and she started to lose weight soo fast with that stone inside her again. Gruff and Cecily bought war to the keep to save her. She was in the brink of death when her family both rescued her and her mother, then took her back. They took care of her until she gained some weight and gave birth to a beautiful girl!

First half of the story was about Amilya being sheltered and fled. Second of the story was suffering in the hands of Drakon. It was ended with a nice ending! Soo many things happens that I had been biting my nails and cried. The world building was beautiful. I literally got swept away in the imagination.

I loved how the author narrated and focused on the character developments. Each character are amazing and has unique powers. It has magical creatures, multiple povs, powerful females badass, spice, and witty banters. It was full of actions, hurt, betrayal, acceptance, and love. I loved the ending!!! It was a nice cliffhanger.

I can't wait to meet the characters again!!

A tidal wave of emotions. Was not expecting such a roller coaster of emotions, enjoyed this book so much, top book of 2023 for me. Hooked on the wytchling chronicles, C C Davies has developed such a rich world, each character being well developed loved and hated throughout the book. Was not expecting a throuple love element, and it was done soooo well <3

If you enjoy audio books, Laura Horowitz is a phenomenal narrator and sold me on this series. An amazing listen on long commutes.

The narration almost got this up to a 4* rating, but it wasn't enough, I'm afraid.
The romance is sweet. Lord and Lady Winters fall for Amelia quickly and there is a lot of tenderness in their relationship.
Unfortunately, it's not quite my cup of tea.

The villains were villainous, the plot was exciting and made my blood boil, the characters were fleshed out that it’s not lacking but ust enough so that they’re still mysterious and intriguing. I enjoyed the roller coaster feeling reading the book, ngl, the throuple threw me a bit. I’ve never read a story with that kind of coupling and it’s a bit jarring to my sensibilities…. I wouldn’t have read it if I knew beforehand there was explicit het sceneS.

This book still slaps so hard. I adore these characters and their relationships and not to mention I love the animals.

Original Review
Holy shit this was fucking brilliant!!!

I can’t believe this is a debut book because it didn’t read that way at all. The writing is amazing and so addictive I literally never wanted to stop reading!

The plot is fast in some parts and slow in others and I really liked it. It gave us time to get to know the characters and to build relationships whilst also having these crazy fight scenes.

The world building was done so well. The world is expansive with a cool magic system but there were never any info dumps as the author weaved the info in seamlessly.

The character and relationship development was phenomenal. There is a throuple in this book and I don’t want to spoil but just know I ADORE them.

I love Amylia so much. She is strong and sweet and deserves nothing but happiness. She went through a lot of terrible shit in this book and I’m sure we will get more of her healing journey in the next book. Cecily and Gryffon are both sweethearts but so protective and I would die for them. Lyrik is one bad bitch and I love her! She is so strong and sassy but caring and I can’t wait to learn more about her in her book. Rogue was hilarious and such a horndog but once again a secret cinnamon roll. I could literally go on and on about these characters but I love my babies.

I adored the found family aspect. I love that everyone loves each other and has different dynamics.

I feel like I don’t read animals in books that often but I loved all of them in this one. They were so cute and we even have fantasy creatures.

There are a few heavy/dark subjects in this book but they were handled with a lot of care by the author.

I’m so excited to read the next book but so nervous for what’s gonna happen!!!

DNF @50% . The writing was not terrible, but the characterisation and plot were lacking. Everyone was very genteel and just so nice (and dull), other than the free love thing, which was maybe trying to distract us from the lack of plot and personality? The polyamorous relationship was creepy and uncomfortable, brimming with icky mummy/daddy swinger vibes, compounded by the bug/sweetling terms of affection during sexytimes, ugh 🤮. The FMC is super, superpowered, which, when combined with her lack of smarts and general blahiness, just served to annoy me, she seemed so undeserving.

It is absolutely unacceptable and inappropriate to have an on page rape scene without a content warning.
I will not read this author again.

Also none is the characters were developed enough to feel a connection with. And the poly relationship was super icky. The multi hundred year age gap and the childish nicknames the adults both have for the 19 year old were gross. There was also no emotional connection. It was all just jump into on page sex. Which I usually don’t mind but there was no emotion built up.
I was bored with the book until the on page rape with no content warnings. Instant DNF.
I have no respect for this author but she clearly has no respect for her readers either.

I am a lover of a good fantasybook to escape the real world, and this compelling story takes off with deep characters with meaningful purposes. Espcially Amylia takes you on her journey where you meet Sylkies, dragon-like creatures, yet more original and a plot that leaves you on the edge of your seat. C. C's book succeeded in taking my mind of off things and transported me into the Wytchlyng universe of magic. Although the book is written with a great sense of humour and an exciting dynamic between characters, there is a slight undertone of raising the issue of gender equality and misogyny.

Absolutely stunning literary work. The execution is "like smoke" and it reads like silk. The story and narrative, will hit you like a hammer in this high-fantasy fiction.

The characters and world building are genuinely fabulous and CC Davie has written something that will no doubt become a classic.

This incredible book has found a place on my shelf of favourites and I would highly recommend this, even if high-fantasy isn't your thing.

so many formatting errors

The story itself was really good but the random change in POV was so horrible. There were so many sections where the main point of view would just change and you were left trying to figure out who was now speaking. This book needs a lot of editing and formatting correction. Overall the world building was intriguing. Some of my favorite characters were animals, Shadow was hilarious. So much potential here!!

This spicy romantasy ended up having a very interesting story in an equally interesting world, however there were just some things I personally didn’t love. I definitely read this for the thruple, but I was not excited to find out at the last minute that the FMC was a virgin. There also ended up to be a pregnancy which is a least favorite trope for me. The description of and depiction of love was excellent, and the spicy scenes were well written, although primarily MF focused.
