After stumbling on a terrible secret, one man must rise to become the hero or risk falling forever. Garrett was the definition of success; good looking, confident, smart and had a good career. But when he is forced to defend himself from an attacker, Garrett discovers a dark truth his mind is unwilling to accept; his attacker wasn’t human at all. Now he only has one survival. Time is running out. Will Garrett become the hero and save everyone he loves, or will he fail and doom the planet? Who can you trust when no one is who they seem?
The story wasn't bad but it really suffered from all the repetition and shallow characterization. I really didn't need to be told like 5 times that Garrett is attractive or that he regrets not shooting his shot with generic attractive girl earlier.
There are too few alien horror novels, so if you’re looking for an invasion story, with solid pacing, creepy imagery and relatable characters, I’d highly recommend starting here.
Really nice read! The story was inventive and I was invested in the plot quickly. This story could easily be continued in another book, but does stand on its own. Definitely worth a read for those of us who like science fiction and/or suspense.
An apocalyptic alien invasion horror? My attention was quickly grabbed! I'm all for little green men visiting planet Earth and causing a little mayhem along the way.
I -really- wanted to shout "FIVE STARS" before I'd even read the book, being the huge science-fiction nerd that I am and a lover of horror, I was prepared to rate this book with flying colors. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to rate this one a 3 stars.
Grammar and spelling were fine, although there was sentences through-out that had missing words (A common editing mistake and has absolutely nothing to do with my rating because it wasn't enough to cause you to re-read the same sentence over and over trying to figure out what the Author was trying to say)
The plot was intriguing and kept my attention until the last page, where sadly I was left feeling very disappointed at the way Eldridge decided to finish the book, and perhaps the open-ended concept was on purpose to give the readers a chance to imagine their own ending but I however was simply left feeling like so much had been missing with the lack of a conclusion; Did the win? Did the aliens destroy all of humanity and take over the earth? Does Garret save the day again? I needed to know more!
Aside from an unfinished finish, some parts of the story such as relationships and situations seemed to progress far too quickly and unrealistically. One date with Garret and Laura could already feel herself falling "In love", WAY too fast... It might make sense if it were a teenage romance but these were two adults and the love between the two just felt escalated far too quickly. Intuition? Garrett's seemed to be WAY too "On the nose", and again... Just unrealistic, You're saying that you can suddenly know all about what's going on after seeing one alien, or witnessing something for the first time? Any one else would have still been in shock, confused and struggling to grasp with what was happening.
Brandon could have spent a lot more time explaining things, slowing things down, and giving us the ending we all want and need... But, in the end despite the negatives I really felt like "Beings" was still a very good read, he ends each Chapter in a way that made you want to turn the next page to find out what happens next. This book wasn't terrible by any means, I simply think it needed a little more and a little less added details where they really didn't need to be.
I might have rated this one on the lower side but don't let that discourage you from giving "The beings" a shot.

Let’s start with the good. This was a fun alien invasion story, in an environment with far too few of those. I loved how they invaded us, and in the end, how they took over.
Unfortunately the bad from here. The dialogue was so stilted, and just off. Nothing about it sounded like a regular conversation between people familiar with one another. A huge point later in the story is identifying the aliens by their “Victorian proper” English. Their English doesn’t fit that, but sounds exactly like the rest of the dialogue in this book.
There was a lot of repetitive and detail that was just unnecessary, characters that had no real impact on the story, and simply added pages to it. The characters themselves seemed like shallow, generic people, very 2D with no real personality or bite. I would have loved to have seen more focus on the aliens, as that’s where the true gems of the story were.
All in all, 1.25 stars to 1.5. If you can put the not great aside, it’s a fun little alien story.
I forgot the aliens are one of the few things that really freak me out. Overall, this book is filled with creepy moments, fun (to read about) situations, and just enough foreboding to keep you hooked for the next chapter.
One of my favorite things about this book that the author did well was giving the reader a different set of knowledge than the main protagonist. You're rooting for the main character, but as the reader, you're left thinking "no, don't do that!"
This is his debut novel and I'm excited to read more from this author. He has a really interesting story idea and so much room for potential.
Garrett is a successful IT security engineer but he has been putting his personal life on hold for his career far too long. Once he finally gets his nerve to ask out the girl of his dreams, he starts encountering odd occurrences and attacks in his neighborhood. Garrett starts realizing the odd attackers are not humans, but aliens disguised as people and he sets out to protect his loved ones from the invasion.
Beings is a fun, fast read. I enjoy Alien horror so I found the Aliens hiding as people a fun storyline. I would have liked a little more character development. Garrett is a likeable character that you will want to root for, but he is a pretty generic handsome good guy. I think he would have shown with a little more rounding out.
A good alien book if you enjoy a trashy read. Despite a lot of issues (data dumping instead of descriptions my main problem), the book was well paced and that made it interesting to read.
An eerie alien invasion story filled with twists and turns.
⭐⭐⭐⭐
This was a fun read, full of likable characters, and an enigmatic story. Who can't love a 9 to 5 joe looking for a real life and relationship? No spoilers here, though. But I will say is this version of the plot, however done repeatedly, was good. Eldridge delivered compelling, original backgrounds for his characters and a story that did not feel repetitive or stale. The creatures, and their lecherous appetite, are disturbing and brow raising. My only critique, and this is nitpicking, is the amount of explanation at or near the end of each chapter. Sometimes it's best to let the reader think and infer the events of the chapter. Overall, a well developed and great sci-fi novel. Really enjoyed it. Please, check it out.
5☆ Absolute page turner.. Beings is a creepy , science-fiction on the edge of your seat book. Great character development.
The green hand broke the surface and guardedly reached for Jake's foot.
You lie there in an unconscious state state, perhaps dreaming, perhaps not.
Their eyes appeared behind a row of bushes.
Something grabbed her by the hair and pulled with so much force that it ripped her dark hair from her scalp.
There was no place safe, nowhere to run. The silence was horrendously deafening, the night was terrifying.
It was time for them to move to their final stage of preparation, it was time to hunt.
I absolutely loved this book, I need more Brandon, lol. I loved that it was written in modern day time with the events that are happening now. Not in the future , but today love it.
It was nice to read a book by a local author. The book had a good pace at the beginning. There was always something happening that made you want to read the next chapters. The chapters were short which as a reader, i appreciate. I give this book 2 1/2 stars because after the strong beginning, the story kind of drags. It seems to take them forever to get to the safe haven. Also after they get to the safe haven, the story tries to wrap up in one chapter. Way too quick of ending and so many dangling questions. What happens to earth?
For being the authors debut novel it was really good. I enjoyed the story and found the plot to be very unique, which in awesome when you think about how many invasion stories have been written. The characters were well developed and I enjoyed meeting them. I found the writing to be entertaining and this is an author who definitely has promise. Overall I enjoyed reading the story and I am sure his next one will be even better. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good creepy story that will keep you eagerly turning the page to see if everyone is safe!
I very much enjoyed this book. Sci-fi is not generally a common genre I reach for, but the book cover intrigued me. The author does a great job of allowing the story to flow smoothly, while also keeping you intrigued and wanting to read "just one more chapter". The chapters are also a nice shorter length, which I appreciate as a reader. Great debut novel and looking forward to reading more from him!
