J. Barrett is the award-winning author of the epic fantasy series “The Keepers of Imbria.” She is known for her dynamic characters and immersive world building, and she breathes life into strong female heroines and villains that you will love to hate.

Growing up, Barrett was a shy, intelligent child who spent much of her time in her room reading. The worlds she escaped to through her books helped her make it through a difficult childhood. She began writing her own stories as a way to shed the timid child who suffered, and to become the strong, independent woman she is today. Her first novel, “Orabelle,” is the beginning of the epic tale that unfolds throughout The Keepers of Imbria series.

Barrett wrote the next three novels of her fascinating and gripping series after being diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. Being young, healthy, and active, J. was completely caught off guard by the diagnosis. An avid rock climber and mountaineer, she has a passion for the outdoors and spends as much time off the beaten path as possible, with adventures that have taken her across oceans and to the tops of the highest peaks. With her illness, she was suddenly unable to do the things she loved most. Overwhelmed and struggling to express how she was feeling, Barrett once again turned to writing. Instead of focusing on her anxiety and illness, she could get lost in the world of Imbria, forgetting about medications and surgeries and doctors for a few beautiful moments. Her strength and determination shine through in her relatable characters, many of whom are women who have overcome all odds to survive and whose perseverance, bravery and determination changed a world.

Today, Barrett is doing great and feeling stronger than ever. She resides in Texas with fiancé and her three-legged dog, Artemis, as her faithful companion and is currently planning her next mountain she will climb.

Orabelle is a novel that manages to do quite a lot, without having a long page count. The story not only introduces the amazing fantasy world, but also serves as an introduction to its series. The novel really sets the scene for an epic and exciting series to come. The author did a fantastic job building the world of the story, and introducing it to the reader, in a complete way without being too heavy on exposition. The world-building felt very natural and was seamlessly integrated into the story. The magic system in the novel was an elemental system and it was so interesting to read about. The author put a lot of thought into how each element could be used, and there was some points where I was pleasantly surprised by how the magic was used, and how it made the story stand out to me.

The plot had a great deal of twists and turns. Events left me with questions right up to the last page of the book, and its ending set the stage for an interesting second entry into the series. The story was very easy to follow as I read, and while some aspects of the plot were a bit predictable, it was an overall engaging story. The story did a good job of adhering to certain tropes, while subverting others.

I felt that the characters were very well written. Each one was complex and layered and their depth became apparent as the story progressed. It was very clear that every character had something that they wanted, ambitions of their own, and a highlight of the story was seeing how the characters, and their plans, conflicted with one another to build towards a compelling, and high-stakes, climax.

I struggled a tad with the writing itself at times. The prose in some passages was a little too flowery or wordy. I did like the writing overall, but certain parts were a struggle for me.

An ensnaring story with twists and turns that'll have your jaw hitting the floor!!

I am OBSESSED!

The story has great world building and enough character personality to make you feel like you're in Imbria yourself!

The character range is amazing. There are some you'll love and some that'll make you wanna slap yo mamma! 🤣

Orabelle is a sh** starter that doesn't take anyone bs. She is definitely my spirit animal. Strong female lead who cares about her people and isn't afraid to do what's necessary to protect them.

She is one bad bish that you don't want to be on the wrong side of and I am here for alllll of it!

I can't wait to continue the series!

In Barrett’s ambitious fantasy series, the divergence of a Keeper from tradition sets loose an ancient evil, forcing the Keepers to rally together amidst internal conflicts that threaten to tear them apart.

The saga unfolds across four installments, each following a different Keeper of Imbria as they grapple with internal conflicts and external threats. In “Orabelle,” Queen Orabelle’s pursuit of truth amidst betrayal lays the groundwork for uncovering secrets and a chilling prophecy. “Maialen” delves into the aftermath of war, as Keeper of Earth Maialen must navigate betrayals and prophecies to safeguard Imbria. “Blaise” follows the journey of the skeptical Keeper of Fire, thrust into a realm of prophecy and betrayal, as he challenges his beliefs to secure their future. Lastly, “Eolande” portrays the prophesied Solvrei breaking free from captivity to confront a corrupted Keeper of Earth, faced with a choice that could seal Imbria’s fate.

Barrett masterfully intertwines various fantasy tropes to construct a compelling narrative. Through prophecies, magical elements, and political intrigue, readers are immersed in a world enriched with timeless themes of destiny and morality. Each story follows the structure of an epic quest, exploring morality, friendship, and personal growth. Through intricate magic systems and political intrigue, Barrett’s narratives subvert traditional tropes, offering fresh perspectives on timeless themes.

Throughout the series, common themes of strong heroines, intricate plotlines, and elements of political intrigue and family dynamics emerge. Barrett’s characters are a standout feature, with each protagonist displaying resilience, growth, and complexity that resonates deeply with readers.

Orabelle undergoes a significant evolution throughout the story, transforming from a conflicted and uncertain individual into a resilient and determined leader. Maialen emerges as a deeply layered character grappling with inner conflict and maternal love. Initially consumed by bitterness towards her sister and strained relations with her son, Maialen undergoes a transformation throughout the narrative, showcasing growth and redemption.

Similarly, Eolande begins her journey grappling with uncertainty and fear but undergoes a profound transformation, finding courage and self-discovery through her interactions with other characters. Her journey towards self-acceptance and empowerment is a central theme, culminating in her emergence as a confident and empowered protagonist.

The conflicts in the series arise not only from external threats but also from internal struggles, such as Maialen’s guilt and Blaise’s sacrifices, adding depth to their dynamic and showcasing the challenges they face. The pacing remains smooth, and the various sub plots interlace beautifully.

With its high action, well-crafted characters, riveting plot twists, and thematic depth, the series makes for an enthralling read for fans of epic fantasy. Readers hungry for stories of adventure, betrayal, and the unwavering strength of the human spirit won’t want to miss this one.

Orabelle is a fiery, volatile woman who is quick to anger and unable to forgive. As Queen of Lahar and the Keeper of the water element, she has a duty to maintain control over all forms of water in Imbria and to work with the other three elemental Keepers for the safety and prosperity of their people within the four realms. Her vicious and power-hungry father betrothed her to the Fire King. Water and Fire never mix well. Orabelle rebels against this union, knowing that the King is a brutal man who seeks only his best interest and not that of his subjects. Her failure to obey her father’s command has Imbria on the brink of chaos and heading toward war.

This is a tightly woven, high-octane story set in a fantasy world where the characters are as rich and intriguing as the storyline. Orabelle is a compelling young woman. She’s intelligent, driven, protective of her people, and the strongest Water Keeper in Lahar’s history. Blaise, her betrothed, is the King of Veruca and the Keeper of Fire. He is not a man to be trusted. While strong and cunning, he has maintained control over his realm with a brutal hand and secret alliances. However, his agenda may not be as straightforward as it seems. In fact, his character is reminiscent of Harry Potter’s Professor Snape, bearing a similar enigmatic, multi-layered personality.

This tale is full of delectable personalities that will engage and fascinate readers. It’s hard to know who can be trusted; who is full of guile or deceit, and who, if anyone, is loyal to the four elemental realms of Imbria. It seems there are as many opinions and agendas as there are personalities. Some loyalties shift with the speed of sand in a windstorm. Others hold true regardless of the outward circumstances. Tal and Damien are two such stalwart, loyal, and trustworthy characters. But don’t expect many of the personalities in this stunning novel to be as easy to read.

This story has a unique style, presenting a deeply laminated and multi-faceted saga. The future of this fascinating world is being forged in the present by the past history of its leaders. Told in a series titled The Keepers of Imbria, “Orabelle” is the debut novel. The prologue itself makes it apparent that there will be more. In fact, readers should be prepared for an abrupt and unsettled ending to this portion of the epic, creating great angst in those of us who wait impatiently for more.

Fans of fantasy novels featuring action and fascinating people will inhale this story. Readers will find a gritty adventure full of heart, loyalty, intrigue, deception, and a host of bittersweet emotions. This fantasy has the depth to cross genre boundaries and provide a provocative, captivating read. I heartily recommend this read.

To begin this review I just want to acknowledge the AMAZING author of Orabelle, J.Barrett. Words cannot even begin to scratch the surface of how truly wonderful and captivating this novel was. Honestly, I am a tough book reviewer and rater so to give this book a 5 star is saying A LOT! What breaks my heart is that more people do not know of this author or her books! Barrett has a way of writing to where even if you are not into fantasy, you will still LOVE Orabelle. Please if you never listen to anything I ever say again, READ ORABELLE! You will not regret it! I was hooked from beginning to end. I laughed, I cried, I WEPT, I gasped, and I was jaw to the floor! There is only the best of the best tropes here!
Orabelle is a female lead that is so powerful that she needs no man and she isn’t the only strong female character that doesn’t need a man! I will continue to shout from the rooftops of how truly captivating this book is! I cannot wait to finish the rest of the series!!
I would love to say more about this book but I do not want to even risk spoiling anything for you all!

After reading Orabelle, I can see why it won an award. It’s not just the world building that pulls you in and makes you feel like part of it, but the scene building, too. The descriptions are beautifully done and the writing is smooth and sophisticated.

The dialogue stood out to me as natural and free flowing, and Orabelle’s relationships with her supporting characters—whether friend, family or foe—are always consistent.

There are twists and turns that will keep you guessing—one in particular early on that threw me!—along with enough action and slower, tender moments to mix up the pace just when it’s needed.

Overall, it’s a well-written tale that draws you into a world filled with complex relationships and characters and keeps you guessing right up until the end.

Wow! This story will keep you wanting to read chapter after chapter. The world-building is beautiful. I feel like I've been living in Imbria for the last week.

The characters are loving, relatable, and yes some you hate. I loved the elemental magic, monsters both human and not so human.

The author paints a beautiful glimpse into her world with each sentence. Love mythology? Experience family drama? Fan of thrones and magic? Just read the book to experience love, betrayal, family disfunction, loyalty, and fantasy fun.

Be warned. You will gasp, want to throw the book, and cry. Snacks and water are needed for this amazing ride!!

Onto the next book I go!

Incredible

This is such a fantastic story! Its an easy story to dive into but as you go along it just gets better and better. The author has written a masterpiece that leaves the reader on a roller coaster of emotions but yet satisfied with the outcomes. You never know what's around the corner and the storyline just gets more intricate. I did not want to put this down and cannot wait to start the next one. A definite keeper on my bookshelf.

This story completely delivered of twists and turns with its political, kingdom driven plot. The characters are intriguing and I found myself always wanting to know more about them, the world setting is beautiful, and the elemental magic is powerful. It's everything I could want in a fantasy setting.

I have to add that J. Barrett using POV writing changes in such a clever way that it was an entirely new experience for me in how I read a story. I can't wait to read more by this author!

I really enjoyed reading this book. It covered everything you’d want in a fantasy book. Magic, mystery, betrayal, love, adventure, revenge, and action. What more could you ask for? It was hard to put down when I’d pick it up to read and couldn’t wait until I had another break in my day to read a few more pages. Cannot wait for the second book to come out to continue the story!!

This book really immersed me into the world of Imbria and it's amazing characters. Whether you love to hate them or hate to love them...you are invested. I could not put it down. Be prepared for some emotional highs and lows as you read your way into these characters lives with all their flaws, attributes, strength and weaknesses exposed as you go. Orabelle is where it all begins. She is a great character and her relationships with her family, her lover, and want to be lovers is riveting. Now I am waiting, not so patiently, for Book 2.
