Wren Booker was three when she was found catatonic and covered in blood on the streets of New York. Since that day, she’s been haunted by a childhood she can't remember. After decades of searching, Wren stumbles upon a cryptic website streaming multiple CCT feeds from strange rooms in a ruined building and something clicks, setting off hidden memories that lead her back to a place she’s seen in lifelong nightmares. Hunting for answers, Wren breaks into the building, but instead finds herself entangled in the camera-filled dark mazes of a decayed social experiment known only as BLINK.
Thank you to Oni Press (Simon & Schuster) and NetGalley for providing the first episode of this comic for review.
This is is an intriguing adventure, written by Christopher Sebela, illustrated by Hayden Sherman, colorist work by Nick Filardi, and lettered by Frank Cvetkovic. The team effort explains why the graphics just pop! It's really really well-done. The storyline is a bit more sophisticated than I expected: a social experiment gone awry, an adult with lingering childhood PTSD, and the curling edges of a terrifying and almost supernatural surveillance system. There are unanswered questions which are likely to be filled in as the series continues. Certainly, we have the beginnings of something epic here. I have high expectations that we will discover more about the characters over time, since we've just been introduced to them. The potential is pretty wide-open and the story could go in almost any direction from here.
It's always a bonus to get your hands on the very first issue of a series, and that opportunity is now with Blink # 1.
Blink started with such an interesting premise that I was genuinely pulled in from the first page. Unfortunately, I feel it did not deliver. The story took a few very sharp turns that made it increasingly confusing without ever really explaining the hows and whys of the enigmatic universe that Wren discovers. Also, the last 1/4 of the book is a review or critic of society which would be fine were it tied in more cohesively with the story. The ending fell flat and rushed, and didn't satisfy my need for answers based on the set up at the beginning.
I would also like to mention that because of some of the artistic decisions made about page lay out, many of the pages were difficult to read as an ebook as the orientation cut the text in two. I would suggest reading this as a physical book.
Thank you NetGalley and Oni Press for the opportunity to read an ARC of Blink.
Thank you to NetGalley and Oni Press for this ARC in exchange for my honest review! I’m loving Oni Press lately. All of their graphic novels have been awesome!
When Wren was a child she escaped a traumatic situation that left her with PTSD. She forgot about the incident until as an adult she comes across a website called Blink that shows her as a child trapped in a room with her parents. She goes back to the building where she was held and attempts to uncover the secrets of Blink and why she was the only survivor.
I loved the art here. The monsters and horror were too tier here. There were a few pages that were amazing with how the creatures were presented. I really look forward to the rest of the story and how it’s going to progress.
Thank you NetGalley and OniPress for granting me an ARC!
I love found-footage horror so I immediately picked Blink (and of course, that amazing cover). What I liked about it is how engaging it was and sometimes I felt like I was in Blink, running away with Wren from the horrors of her past. The layout was dizzying but interesting, and I've never read a graphic novel that moved so smoothly. However I didn't find most of the dialogues and monologues believable, and it was hard to understand the plot. Still, I'm willing to give this another try and read the next one in this series :)
Ever feel like something in your life has happened, you have a meaning to your life, but you just can't figure it out? Wren will stop at nothing to find his truth, even when the truth terrifies him.
First of all, the illustration was phenomenal. *chef's kiss*
So this graphic novel was a little confusing to me, I feel like I was having to re-read parts because I was so confused, but I feel like I got the message in the end. Graphic novels are a fairly new genre to me, but I am enjoying giving them a go.
Blink, by Sebela, etc I would describe this with terms such as: amnesia, not remembering one’s family origins, bad dreams, search for identity, haunted house, digital world, ultra Big Brother reality tv, humanoid monsters [like in the Doctor Who episode ‘Orphan 55’, January 2020; & like in Mockingjay novel & films], Wizard of Oz, ready Player One, and the chosen one. Claustrophobic terror, basically. ***
i received an advance review copy for free, and i am leaving this review voluntarily.
this graphic novel as very strong love, death & robots vibes. not a big fan of horror myself but the premise intrigued me and i love the art style. if you're into social experiments gone wrong and horror stories, you might enjoy this more than i did.
This first installment has immediately intrigued me. I really like the premise is really interesting and I enjoyed the art style as well. It was a good set up for this comic and I'd definitely be interested in continuing and seeing where it goes.
Aesthetically this was so nice, the illustrations and colors worked so well together! The story so far is very interesting and eerie, I’m honestly really excited to see where this goes!
Thank you to NetGalley for a copy in exchange for an honest review. This is most definitely the start of something great. I honestly can't wait to see where this story is taken and expanded upon. We have a very original idea that holds so much potential, it's enjoyable to see play out. It completely gives off horror-stricken AI and SciFi vibes mixed with the mystery surrounding our main character.
Watching her try to uncover why she was the only survivor of something brutal sucks you in from the start. Not to mention the art for this is impeccable and I would catch myself just staring at it. I can't wait to dive in for more on the next issue!
Blink follows Wren as they try to uncover the secrets of their past. Wren was found as a baby, in the street and covered in blood. Wren uncovers CCT footage and it recognizes some of the location as a place she has been before.
I will admit that we I requested this arc, I didn't realize that it was a graphic novel. I was caught up in the premiss, and the cover art that I didn't look closely enough at the description. I don't normally read graphic novels but I loved the artwork! It is beautiful and I found myself really drawn into the art work and how it enhanced the story.
My only critique is that I wish there had been more character development around Wren. I appreciated how the jumped right into the story but I wanted to know a bit more about her. Overall I enjoyed this and if you read graphic novels regularly I think that you would enjoy this too!
