Can you ever find something you never knew you’d lost? You can outgrow a place, it’s common knowledge. You can even outgrow people. Honey Rosenberg has spent her entire life in the small town of Verity Vale and it still fits her perfectly. She lives her life in certainties. She goes to work every day with her sisters at their family deli. She bakes sweet treats that the town clamor for and she spends her nights drinking cider and playing chess, under the moonlight, with her elderly neighbor and best friend. Everything is idyllic. But life can turn on a dime and when it does, she wonders if things will ever feel the same. Liv Henderson thought she had it all, beautiful girlfriend, a luxury seventh-floor apartment with a city view and job she always wanted. But then she is handed something she never asked for. The deed to a place she barely remembers. Suddenly nothing is what it seems and Liv starts to question everything she’s ever known, including herself. As Liv’s life starts to unfurl around her she soon comes to learn that in order to find ourselves we have to be ourselves. Sometimes all you have to do is look up.
S-Jay Hart can be found sipping tea and reading, most of the time. When she’s not doing these things she can be found camping, hiking or shamelessly pretending she’s a dinosaur, astronaut, or butterfly, with 30 small children. She started writing when she was a teenager, creating a fictional world with friends, and has over sixty notebooks filled with stories and ideas. She lives with her two teen humans, her two doggos and her furry beta-buddy Brenda.
What an amazing and heartwarming book and so very well written. I honestly never quoted and marked so much in a book before. The two MCs had some emotional baggage to sort through to get their HEA. Especially Honey was such a sweetheart and I loved her character very much. And wow, I can‘t believe it‘s a debut novel. Looking forward to more from this author. Highly recommend.
This was a heartwarming and pleasant read for most of the book until the black moment that felt like a needlessly overdramatic reaction by one of the characters towards a misunderstanding and I felt a little disappointed by that.
Otherwise, I liked this story because Honey and Liv were nice and sweet people who were perfect for each other in every way. They were at the same stages in life, particularly when it came to settling down with someone new. Both were fresh out of relationships that didn't last due to differences in personalities and priorities between them and their ex partners, and so while they were not putting themselves out there, they were also open to exploring a romance with somebody new. I liked that they knew at that point what they were looking for in a new partner and didn't resist the attraction they felt for each other.
This is also a story about grief and loss Honey and Liv become acquainted only after Liv inherits her grandfather's house and discovers that Honey is his best friend and neighbour. Through Honey, Liv learns more about the grandfather she hardly knew and together, they grieve and bond over a common loss and I love the support and understanding they have between them.
I thought this was a relatively good debut on KU, which I would have missed out on if not for the friends from Goodreads (I think it was XR).
I am a huge language lover and sometimes I even believe that I am a total language snob. Not that I am fully able to notice every kind of grammar issue in English, but there is something deep inside me that will let me know if an author has a way with words. Of course this is totally subjective and what a beautiful language is for me is different for someone else. The reason why I am telling all of this is because this new author S-Jay Hart has definitely an incredible way with words and she spoke right to my heart with them. Then as soon as I started reading this story I was in love because it is written in such a beautiful way. For example it contains so many wonderful book references about chapters and so much more. I was smiling every time when I got to such a scene but also about so many other things.
But it's not only the writing I fell in love with, also the characters and the story itself made me swoon. It is as sweet as the things Honey bakes and the things she bakes are as sweet as she is herself. I fell in love with her. She is the person you want to have in your life, be it as a partner or a friend. All the adults (maybe minus one of her sisters) and all the kids love her. She is the best baker, kind and just a wonderful human being in general. You just want her to be happy herself. Unfortunately life doesn't always work this way. Losing her girlfriend to another country and then her best friend, both hit her hard and even if she is questioning herself more and more. My heart broke several times for her and yes there were tears, because I just wanted Honey to be ok.
When she meets Liv, the granddaughter of her deceased neighbour the attraction is there immediately. Liv actually just got out a long term relationship and feels a bit lost in life. The only thing she knows is that aside from her job she wasn't happy. But what she finds in this little town Verity feels like home right away. Home was always a foreign feeling, which means at first she can't place the feeling. Spending more and more time with Honey changes her. She is more happy and more content, because this is what Honey does to people. But what kind of future do they have, both knowing Liv only planned to stay for a limited time to sort out her grandfather's things? Liv actually never really stood up for herself and getting there isn't easy, especially when you struggle to talk about your feelings. Before I reveal too much I will better stop and let you discover the tiny town Verity and this story by yourself. I promise you there is a happy ending and like I already said a beautifully written story until you get there.
Besides two wonderful main character S-Jay Hart also created several wonderful side characters. Like Honey's sister Sasha, her daughter Lissy but also Lara, who works in a coffee shop. I totally see the last two getting their own story. 🥰 Of course there are also some characters I disliked just a tiny bit. You will know who I mean, when you read the story. 😉
All of them made the story to what it is in the end, which is a beautiful love story that made me feel so many feelings. I swooned, smiled, cried and so much more. Most of all, the story left me in awe because I had to remind myself over and over again, that this is a debut novel.
Knowing that every author improves with every book I definitely can't wait to read more by her. For me this story already came very close to perfection. I mean have I already mentioned I am a language lover? I know I have, but I just needed to mention it one more time at the end of my review. 🥰
S-Jay Hart touched me deeply with her writing and that’s definitely not something many authors do. I’m telling you to watch out for this and other books by her. I feel that with Oh My Stars a new star is born in the author‘s sky and I can‘t wait for more stars (oops stories) by her to accompany the others in the sky. 🌟😍
I made it about halfway before I decided to bail. Liv and Honey are both very sweet and largely in the same way. They’re giving and kind and love kids and want to have a solid relationship they build forever on. Both have also just exited relationships with cheating users and are ready (mostly) for the real thing.
My issue has been that the story dwells on the internal worlds of the characters and wallows marinates in the feels. Which makes it slow moving with lots of descriptive details and extraneous plot points. This isn’t a bad thing, per se. I just find myself becoming impatient and ready to move on.
So at this point, I made the choice to bail without prejudice (rating). For me, it feels slow and weighed down by detail. But I feel like it’ll have an audience who treasures it for those very things.
What an amazing debut novel! I love the way the author spins words into an absorbing story that has left me in all sorts of emotional states. This story, in a nutshell, is about two broken hearts, family issues, loss and has a beautiful love story. There is passion, lust and an undeniable connection between the main characters. I can't wait to see what else the author has in store for us in the future.
Oh My Stars is a big slice of peach cobbler sweetness. The book is sunshine and a good antidote to these grey, winter skies.
Liv, still raw from a breakup, heads to the small town of Verity to finish business for the grandfather she barely knew. His nearby neighbor, Honey, is still grieving over the death of Marvin, Liv’s grandfather, because they were found family. Of course, the two women connect and the romance is quick, mostly cheery, and I enjoyed it. There is a little bit of angst which leads to some spicy times between the two which is another plus.
Even though this story felt like a rom-com, there are some profound moments/passages that touched me. The author did not lay it on heavy but she was on point for relationships, good and bad. OMS is an excellent book to read while you’re huddled under your covers and drinking a hot tea. 4.5 Stars.
This is a very good debut book by British author S-Jay Hart, a product of the Covid lockdown. The pandemic killed writing inspiration for many authors but opened up the chance for others to shine. This is the case with Oh my Stars.
Honey Rosenberg has spent her entire life in the small town of Verity Vale dedicated to baking sweet goods in the family deli. She’s happy with her life until things around her take a turn for the worse. Liv Henderson thought she had it all, living in the city with a beautiful girlfriend and a great job. But when family circumstances force her to go to Verity Vale she’ll find things she didn’t know she needed…
This is a very sweet romance with the setting of a small town. The story puts emphasis on the importance of family, values and love. The author gives us some tidbits of wisdom about the fundamental things in life and the transformative experience of love.
This is Hart’s debut novel and it’s not without flaws. I found that the “black moment” felt a bit forced but overall it’s a feel-good romance that will leave the reader with a message of hope and joy in living. I’m looking forward to reading whatever S-Jay Hart writes next. 4 stars.
I can’t keep reading this. This book starts with two mains who are desperate for kids, something I don’t care about at all. On top of that both are in a relationship with someone who doesn’t want kids AND is cheating.
I see some great reviews for this one but I just can’t continue, I feel zero interest in the story and the characters.
This was such an incredibly beautiful debut novel that captured my attention so quickly that I ended up binge-reading it on my birthday weekend! (So much for my non-existent social life!) The story is of two lovely ladies who have both been betrayed by partners that were never right for them to begin with. They end up in the same small town, one already there, grieving over the death of her grandfatherly best friend, and the new occupant, the actual granddaughter who was the big time city girl who came to fix up the mansion to sell. Even though there was an immediate attraction, there were clashes. There was romance, insecurities, fears of making another mistake, declarations, minds not knowing if they could trust, angst, and some beautiful love scenes. I’m not calling them sex scenes because this book’s love scenes were so much more. They were tenderly expressed, emoting sincere affection and loving feelings towards each other. They were as sweet as they were sexy.
First a comment about this writer. When you know the likes of Erica, Lily and Luc to name a few, you have to bring your A game. And S-Jay Hart has done just that. This book could never be described as a “debut”. There is too much love and heart put into this. The storytelling was so on point and the characters all had heart and depth to them. Honey and Liv were two lost souls. Both were in dead relationships. But when their paths meet, the chemistry and instant connection is hard to resist. Honey loves her family, her deli, baking, her hometown and Marvin her best friend. But her girlfriend left and it is becoming obviously clear she is not coming back. And then a tragedy hits her hard. Liv is a professor, accomplished, a writer, and has a girlfriend who has been cheating on her. Then her grandfather who she hasn’t seen in years passes away and leaves the house to her. When these two women realize they can not control their feelings and emotions, they must internally decide do they go forward knowing this is probably not going to end well. The story is captivating and held my interest to the last word on the page. The writing has a maturity and seriousness about it that makes me wish it was longer. An all around great job!
What a lovely, touching story. Honey loves her hometown, and her neighbor Marvin. She loved Marvin's wife Bea too before her untimely death 10 yrs ago. On Honey's 30th birthday Marvin gives her Bea's recipe book. Then, Marvin has a heart attack and leaves his house to his grandchildren. Liv, is his granddaughter and comes to take care of the estate. Then she meets Honey. Two broken women that find one another. Such a loving story, with great side characters. 5 stars!!!
A good story from a new writer to me: A lot of thinking going on and we were privy to too much of it to keep it moving along. An author to watch, I think.
Such a sweet story, with really great main characters. A real feel good read. Yeah you have the inevitable misunderstanding and make up, but even that was ok. Kinda feel the need to break out the mixer and bake now..
This book is so beautifully written I forced my self to savor it over a week. The language the sentences, pure prose. And both MC'e are amazing. Beautiful story
S-Jay Hart wrote a beautiful story. This was well done as a debut novel. The chemistry was phenomenal, the angst was well resolved. I like seeing the characters grow. I look forward to more books by this author.
I loved this book. The pacing was perfect, the characters well drawn and the book was peppered with perfect phrases. I was in from the off, and remained so throughout. I highly recommend it. For me it was so close to being a 5. Maybe meet the brother, maybe find out more about Liv's mother but neither is integral to the plot so the book isn't poorer for those issues. I know I'm not making sense, if you want sense read this book!
I fell in love with the characters almost immediately. The Rosenberg clan with the shy and unsure Honey, the kind and conscientious Sasha, the strong and assertive Kyla and Lissy who is a beautiful blend of her aunt Buzzy and mother Sasha. Then you have Liv one of the Henderson’s, who you think is so self assured but as the story unfolds you realise is just getting to know who they are; which is very much a reflection of the grand parents they never really knew.
A beautiful story of love, loss, life, self discovery and letting go. S-Jay Hart wraps you up in their silk like words, that are so soft and rhythmic. No word is wasted. The language draws you in to the delightful world they have created and you never want to leave. It’s almost bewitching and you don’t want to put this book down.
If you haven’t read it then stop what you are doing and get reading now. You won’t regret it. In fact you’ll be so mad that you waited so long and you’ll be even more mad when it finishes. I can tell you for sure that I’m already desperate for a sequel and counting down the days for the next book whatever and whenever that will be.
I felt certain this wonderful book would include a happy ending, but didn't expect the gamut of emotions. S-Jay, you have such a talent. Loved Verity Vale and Honey and Liv. I hope you write another story S-Jay, hinted St in this book. Began to read this on a gloomy day until a pile of blankets, and found a new favourite 😃
Honey was a hopeless romantic, who just wanted a family and children, but her current girlfriend Andi did not seem to want the same. She was actually in another state in Australia and had been away for a year. Honey wanted to help wherever she could, but in my opinion, the relationship was already over. Honey was hoping that the time away would have changed her heart towards family.
This was a beautiful story about love, the feeling of having someone you can share your dreams and hopes for the future.
This is a story about a meeting of two souls who desire the exact same thing in their future family and love, support, security, someone who will understand you in a deeper, more intimate way that goes further than even a sexual experience, but someone who loves you beyond your faults and even mistakes you made, someone who makes a decision to love you who commits to you that’s what Liv and Honey we’re looking for.
This is a very touching story about two hearts that had been broken looking for peace , love and the family they both always wanted.
A story about family and love and how you should keep your heart open. Honey was sweet and just wanted a family with the woman she would love and cherish for the rest of her life
It was nice to see the main characters come together and choose their love and family. Liv was able to know her grandparents in a different way through Honey‘s eyes.
This is a very well written debut by the author. I highly recommend this book it will make you feel warm inside and I will make you long for that love that we are all searching for. 5 stars.
Nice lesbian love story with very lovable characters
I enjoyed the story, the characters and the small town setting. Read it through almost entirely in one sitting. Will definitely read this author again.
Beautiful first novel. 4.3 The book about love but also grieving, finding yourself when you the path you thought was long written suddenly changes, fate.
When i read the first chapters, i really wonder : how will this two people will cross their paths? The twist is pretty emotionnal. Honey and Liv both starts the book both unhappy and deserving way more better. Honey in particular wears her heart on her sleeve and you want to protect her at all cost. When they meet, it’s a mix of fate, tears and sparks.
The writing alternates between Honey and Liv’s POV. S-Jay Hart writing style focus a lot on the characters thoughts and it can be a little messy sometimes but she digs deeps the emotions. One thing i was a little frustated was sometimes i never knew how much time precisely had pass between two scenes, i have my narrow cartesian brain to thank that for. I know it wont disturb most of the readers.
The book brings most ingredients you are looking for in a novel : chemistry, emotions, endearing main characters and side characters, but also really despicable characters i personnaly wanted to hit (but that mean i was invested). The ending was really sweet and satisfying. (SPOILERS ALERT just one thing i would have loved to see is seeing Honey and Kyla resolve their issue END OF SPOILERS ALERT)
I feel like S-Jay put a lot of herself in there : mentions of sapphic authors that must be dear to her heart, and my swifty heart was rewarded with mentions of Taylor Swift’s songs and not even the most known ones
This debut novel is really promising, i really enjoyed it.
Sometimes the pieces of you life just fall into place. Even heartbreak and loss are the stepping stones to the rest of your life. Learning to navigate your own life is the journey of your life. This is a lovely story of Liv and Honey learning to navigate their own lives.
You know what's going to happen before it happens and it still manages to snap your heartstrings. The feel of this book verges a wee bit to the soap opera... dramedy... side of life. The wording is heavier, but poignant. I have some wonderful quotes highlighted, some life lessons that were too sweet to forget. Knuckle through the tough chapter because their love and chemistry and family are worth getting to know.
Love, baked goods, refinding one's self, and an accepting town...what's not to like? This is a sweet story of small town girl finds love in with lost city girl who discovers the small town is home. Enjoy!
