They’re both prisoners of the same man.

Desperate to free herself from the cruel hands of the husband she never wanted, Theyma Ruan strikes a deal with one of his prisoners—if you promise not to kill me, I’ll help you escape. Rakhnar of the Tai’Sif Ljark accepts. But when their plan goes awry, he has no choice but to take her with him. In the violence and wreckage of their escape, Rakhnar accidentally initiates the soulbond with Theyma.

The Ljark aren’t supposed to soulbond with humans.

Rakhnar is the leader of his people and sworn to a bond with another woman. As long as he and Theyma don’t consummate their soulbond, it will eventually dissolve, and he will be free to pursue his rightful future. But the longer he spends with Theyma, the more he realizes she’s everything he could ever want. His duty to his people forbids their love, but his heart is not so easily ruled.

Torn between loyalty and love, and pursued by evil, Theyma and Rakhnar must fight to choose their own fate—before the choice is taken from them.

Okay, this series needs way more attention than it gets!!

And maybe it was still kinda not perfect in the sense of probability (like how all the planets they accidentally drop on have the best conditions for humans to breathe, how things are way too convenient and so on) but the couple totally blew me away.

The hero is from this very different species and the way his voice and language function are not comprehensible to humans. Yet there is something unique about the heroine that makes them perfect for each other and I will not tell you a thing about it, you have to learn it for yourself.

But let me tell you, after reading so many alien romances at this point, I was amazed by how wonderfully this author built a unique and beautiful world with highly unusual species.

Yes, the middle dragged a little, and yes, the ending was a bit dramatic, just like in the previous books, but damn did I love every minute of it!!

Heart Song is the 3rd book in the Forbidden Mates series. I admit, I picked this up because I thought the blurb hinted at OW drama… it didn’t. So, this is one of the books that I’m rating a 3⭐, because it’s solid… just not a great match for me.

This is for the sci-fi readers that love world-building, because it's excellent. There’s a lot going on: places, alien breeds, names, which I think would have been easier had I read the first two books. However, the writing/world-building was so strong that I caught on.

This is a romance, but it develops slowly throughout the book, and the couple isn’t really even a couple until the very end. There’s no real drama or angst, but it’s sweet and well developed.

Bottom Line- The writing is good, and I could picture each alien and setting. Both mc’s are very likeable (this is not a bossy alien or smut) and the relationship develops naturally. BUT, if you’re in the mood for steam or action… this probably isn’t it. As a reader, I'm bored easily, and parts dragged so I skimmed some.

❝You’re Theyma—❞ he allowed himself to put the Ljark possessive inflection on her name, making her my Theyma ❝—and you are important and precious to me. No matter what the future brings, that will always be true.❞

❛Heart Song❜ in a word? Sweet ✨

This is probably one of the sweetest alien romances I have ever read. Heather Guerre is an author to watch, that's for sure. I loved her take on aliens and I truly commend the effort she put into making the world building so unique.

THIS WAS BEAUTIFUL! IT'S BEEN AWHILE AND NOT EASY TO FIND AN ORIGINAL ALIEN SCI-FI ROMANCE BECAUSE MOST OF THEM END UP BEING SO CORNY AND CLICHE FILLED WITH SMUT. THIS ONE WAS JUST BEAUTIFULLY ROMANTIC.

RAKHNAR is an unknown alien species to the humans, his kind not widely known and when on the way to meet his future mate, he was captured by our heroine's power hungry husband who kept him prisoner in an underground basement where other aliens are held captive. Rakhnar's mad as hell for what he has been subjected to, unwilling and stubborn to cooperate or even speak to his captor, until they sent down a songbird who stirred his interest like no other. The beauty about alien sci-fi romance that appeals to me endlessly is the fact of how TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SPECIES will learn about each other's culture, the physiological differences, the language and even through it all, they manage to bond through love. I find that completely beautiful and breathtaking. Rakhnar doesn't find Theyma attractive at first, because to both of them, they just look odd even if they still had a pair of arms and legs, not more than. Despite the author putting in the soulbond feature that binds the two in the beginning and influences their decisions, at least it wasn't a full on bond, allowing them to freely fall in love despite the impulses to mate. Rakhnar was a great hero - protective, intelligent and respectful. Towards his people, he's a great leader who doesn't want to disappoint them and does all he can to ensure their survival. Towards Theyma, he's a caring and loving mate who will always put her first despite everything. What can you not love about him?

THEYMA is the abused wife of a powerful, political man and let's just say she's a survivor. Born in the slums, she's had to crawl her way and made decisions that she's not proud of just to fill her belly. Trained as a courtesan before becoming a singer, and then marrying a man she didn't love for the security and then being abused by him? Boy, she's come a long way. My favourite part of the story comes into play when her husband forces her to communicate and be friendly to Rakhnar, in order to get information out of him because she's the only one whom he trust and can speak the language to get across. Theyma and Rakhnar's initial meetings were filled with distrust, curiosity and heartbreak, I loved every indecisive yet profound moment that built the basis of their relationship. When Theyma finally betrayed her husband and broke the aliens out, she nearly died protecting Rakhnar and together they escaped, only to crash land and had to survive a few days out in the wilderness of space. But, Rakhnar's obligated to mate a female worthy of his title, and Theyma's been traumatized by a dominant husband for too long. Even if they are attracted to each other and feel the stirrings of love, will they be able to just set it all aside and bond in the name of love?

OVERALL this was a beautiful alien story, and frankly if you love sci-fi romances like I do, DON'T MISS THIS ONE OUT. This author is fairly new to me, I've read the first book of the series and liked it as well. I can't wait for the next one, and I hope more readers will find their way to Heather Guerre's stories and spread the word of her amazing stories.

I love Heather Guerre and this has been on my TBR list for awhile. I enjoyed the world building a great deal. I liked the MC’s and thought they were well-developed. This book is a slow burn that’s not super steamy.

The h and H sort of have a miscommunication which makes them think the other one doesn’t want the other. Once that’s cleared up, they come together. I would’ve liked that part of the story to be fleshed out more. It seemed they had so many obstacles to overcome to become a couple, but in the end they were glossed over so easily.

it was so good!! i need to read more of heather guerre

i could give this 5 stars but her rapist husband had too many scenes, we couldn't get rid of him until %33 and his parts were hard to read.

it started a little dark, hero being prisoner and heroine being married to owner of that prison 🥲 after they escaped it become a really sweet story. this might be the only book with good misunderstandings, they made the story better 🤌🏼

"You are many things, Ruan Theyma, but you are in no way a burden.

i love him.

Really liked this one. 3rd POV.

She is in a bad marriage and helps some convicts escape and goes with them. Good world building and various different alien races.

Not insta love. There is a soul bond but it will fade if they just don't continue with steps. It only stared because he got some of her blood on him while they were escaping. I liked the idea of a soul bond that is deliberately sought out and created. That makes more sense than persons from two different alien races being fated mates which is always a huge stretch for me. So they let the bond die out.

Will probably try more of the series

The language and music theory focus was really cool in this. Glad we got some additional details and impressed she can pack so much in such short books. Still want more but that’s a compliment to the concise nature of her writing.

The ending left me wanting more, if we had seen more vs jumping ahead a bit to an epilogue this would’ve gotten an even higher rating

Overall, thoroughly enjoyed this series and hope she keeps adding to it

OB.SESS.ED. I’m obsessed.

I’m so glad I stuck with the series to reach this gem- it was by far the best of the three, and just an overall good sci-fi romance.

The chemistry was there, the tension, the action, the character development.. all wonderful. Probably best enjoyed if you’ve read the first two books, but you certainly don’t need to have read them to pick this one up. 1000000% recommend, but check trigger warnings. There is some sexual abuse mentioned and on page.

Another win in the series for excellent world-building! The sentient alien races are well-developed, unique, and I could read a dozen more books about Ljarks and be thrilled. For a plot with heavy trigger warnings, consent between the main characters was a beautifully handled process that spanned all three acts without ever feeling over-handled. I didn’t want the story to end. Truly, please continue the series!

Now I’m going to be annoying and share my picky reader gripe. There was a section where the word ‘muck’ was jarringly used 20 times between pages 124 to 132, and that took me out of the story’s progression. To me, it was an editing oversight in an otherwise well-executed narrative, so I picked this back up again and I’m so happy I did. (Unsolicited advice - substitute some of that muck for mud, filth, sludge, fetid water, etc, and the readability of that chapter will vastly improve.)

This was my favorite book of the series yet. We're dealing here with a different alien species and the relationship between the MCs felt more organic and had more time to develop (although they still did not have full agency). We also depart from the "women abducted for reproduction" trope and it is really welcomed. There was a bit of miscommunication/non-communication that led them each to believe the other one would not reciprocate their feelings, but it was really well done.
The ending opens for another book in this series, which I'll happily read when it comes out (even if it's back with the Scaevens).

The writing and editing of the ARC version of the manuscript was clean, with no typos that I found and well constructed sentences. The world building was excellent, with the alien worlds and races all coming to vivid life. That is one of the great pleasures of reading this particular author. The characterization was great, with both hero and heroine being complex, sympathetic individuals with strengths and weaknesses. The plot and pacing was exciting, meaning I read this novel in one sitting. The development of the romantic relationship was sweet and organic, though the internal conflict of the hero and heroine not communicating clearly what they really wanted to each other dragged on WAY too long. I would have preferred it if the hero had gone after what he wanted way earlier in the novel. There was a medium amount of angst in this novel which I did not enjoy, and very high stakes, which I did enjoy. This novel used the Mate Bond trope, the Prison Break trope, the Partner in Trouble trope, and the Road Trip trope. The world building was five stars. The plot and pacing were five stars stars. The characterization was five stars and the development of the romantic relationship was four stars, because of the overuse of the Refusal to Honestly Communicate trope. I therefore gave this novel a combined rating of five stars. This novel had a Happy Ever After ending instead of a cliffhanger, so that was a big plus. I recommend this novel to readers of sci-fi romance who really enjoy vivid world building. I look forward to reading the next novel set in this world with great anticipation. I will be buying myself a keeper copy of this novel.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Prior to this series I’d never read an “alien romance” but I discovered Heather Guerre’s books through one of her “slice of life” books (not sci-fi or fantasy) and was really impressed with her writing. Wanting more of her voice I stumbled upon book 1 in this series and was blown away by her world building in particular. After reading books 1 and 2 (which I loved) I can honestly say this one, book 3 in the series, outshone the other two in terms of originality and storyline. I also really love that the characters, while brought together by a hormonal attraction, were given the chance to fall for each other independently.

Some complained that the middle drags or the romance is too slow-burn, but I love a good slow-burn as long as the storyline can sustain it, and this one definitely can. Absolutely fantastic character development, world building, dynamic, insanely steamy scenes, wonderful handling of difficult topics such as marital rape and PTSD resulting from sexual abuse, just… so good. As an aside, I’m a professional musician, composer and vocalist and I really loved the incorporation of music in this storyline. I truly hope Ms. Guerre writes more in this universe cause it’s just so fantastic (this one ends with an implication of another story forthcoming), but I’ll be binging the rest of her books in the meantime…

Really interesting aliens and unique sex! I loved that part. The less good part was the weird misunderstandings on both the hero and heroine’s ends. More so the heroine which pissed me off. No reason to make a woman dumb just to progress the story and that’s exactly what it felt like to me.

It wasn’t bad enough to completely ruin the story but it does prevent me from loving this book all the way.

P.S. I love the cover! 🥰

soooooooo good. this was my favorite of the three, and can be read as a stand-alone. I thought it was so unique for her to use music as both a language and a tool for the Ljark people, and then to connect one with a human singer. obviously i loved the torment of being soul-bonded to someone who can't reciprocate. Rahkhnar really saves Theyma from a terrible fate and heals her in such a beautiful, unhurried way, and i liked that she didn't shy away from how bad her marriage was (though i'm sure it's triggering to some people).

He felt "pride at providing for her, fear for her continued safety, desperation to see her healthy and happy, and a primal surge of physical desire." Desperate to put her at ease. "In my impatience, I caused you an injury,” he said grimly. “I have failed in my duty to care for you. I apologize.”

i love how easy it is to accept trans-species relationships, and the idea that all these aliens could land on different planets and somehow breathe and be fine on it. this is as close to love sci-fi as i'll ever get, and i hope she writes more. she left the ending like she would.

A nice change of pace in SFR

I hope this author continues to write in science fiction romance. The stories I’ve tried of hers in this series, book one and two, were more than the fluffy light repeated over and over stories so common in SFR right now. This particular book had interesting creation of species and storyline. There relationship build was pleasant and well designed.
Parts did tend to drag on a bit, like fixing things etc. so I did skip a few paragraphs here and there. But over all it was a very nice change to the run of the mill SFR on the market.
I hope she focuses on SFR more.

This book was BEAUTIFUL!

I started this series because I heard it was all sex pollen-y (which the steam did not disappoint), but I wasn't expecting it to be so beautiful. This book is an adventure from page one that's laced throughout with angst, pining, emotional growth, and the power of love.

Seriously, every part of this book was a delight to read. I loved the scifi tech, the world-building, the characters, and the plot. On top of that, the writing was hauntingly beautiful. Even though this book is book three in a series, if you want a five star read right now, go ahead and pick this up. I think it can be read well enough as a stand alone.

Heart Song features Theyma, human and Rakhnar, alien. Theyma and Rakhnar are both prisoners, in different cages. Theyma’s awful and abusive husband is determined to find Rakhnar’s secrets and dangles Theyma in front of him. After an escape, they find themselves in more danger.

The pacing in this book unfortunately didn’t work for me. The abuse was awful and really hard to read and lasted too long, I kept setting the book down. Then the dancing around their feelings was so drawn out, I just needed them to be together, which basically didn’t happen until the last chapter.

Very sad that this wasn’t for me, because I love an alien.

This was excellent. SLOW burn, although I would have loved just a tiny bit more steam, even one more sexy scene between MMC and FMC. I loved that they met when hero was in prison and heroine helped to free him, that is one of my all time favorite "tropes". And then they are stranded in the wilderness together, alone! A lot of the details were glossed over. I prefer more suffering lol. I would have loved to read about predators, protecting themselves, foraging for food, a serious injury, etc..all stuff you would encounter while surviving on a foreign planet. I would have also loved a closer bond while the MMC was in prison. I don't feel like she had much of a motive...she met him a handful of times and then after only speaking to him for a day or two, breaks him out of prison for no other reason but to escape/get back at her "husband"/??.

Overall I really loved this book. Interesting world building, interesting characters. Loved the idea of how they bond with the 5 steps

This book started as a thriller/horror book and somehow turned into the cutest rom-com. This couple is just the best and THE CLIFFHANGER WAS SO GOOD. (maybe not really a cliffhanger, but close enough.)
I really, truly, sincerely hope that Heather Guerre writes more books in this world. They're incredible, and I NEED MORE.

this was perfect perfect perfect. i loved the couple, the world, the story. i’ve been looking for a truly amazing sci fi romance for awhile, and this checked all my boxes.
mostly, i love how simple this story is. there’s action and underlying plot, but most of this book focuses on our main characters, and the beautiful story of two entirely different people falling in love.
