An outstanding manual for training weanlings and starting yearlings by “America's Most Trusted Horseman.” Every young horse will benefit from John Lyons' training methods because they lay a strong foundation for future under-saddle work in all disciplines.
This is a small book. Only one hundred pages. I would like to give it more stars and I think for someone just learning to work with horses it would be of higher value. I found much of it to be what I would think is common sense. But in truth, being gentle with an animal when training it isn't. In fact just the term "breaking" a horse says it all. Many people think you need to "break" a horse's will and spirit to "master" it. Not work with it and train it in a compassionate way.
I actually got this book with the thought of helping me to retrain a damaged horse. My plan is to work with her as if she is Green and not an older animal. So, I was looking for training techniques that might help. I did find some techniques that I didn't know and will try, "No-Contact Control" and "Come on command".
A good book, but not as useful for someone who doesn't have all the facilities like myself. I will definitely be trying to put some of these things into practice though.
Great book. Lyons does an excellent job of explaining how to get your baby to respond the way you want, and a great job of explaining WHY you are performing a certain lesson. Pictures were very well done. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to get their young horse off to a great start.
Although Lyon's book is incredibly expensive, it is very clear and very helpful if you have no experience, or very little experience in bringing a colt on.
Each training exercise has step by step pictures. I love the gentle approach that doesn't involve forcing or rushing your horse. I can't wait to get started with my foals!
