Magic & Malice is a magical collection of stories from some pretty awesome authors!
Spellbound by A.D. Luna is one of my faves! From the first couple of words, I was hooked. From the story to the characters, everything is very well written. I was digging the mysterious and slightly danger vibes the story was giving off. That ending! I can’t wait to see what comes next from A.D. Luna. A new author to watch and follow! I give this 5 stars.
Review for A Song of Salt and Secrets: This was a great story with great writing..it moves very quickly and has lots of action. Even though it is a short story, the author wraps up the story and it doesn't feel half done or missing anything. I loved the characters and would like to read more by this author.
A fun YA anthology; stories by some authors I knew & loved plus discovered a few new indies along the way for whom I’ll be keeping an eye out. Some were a hit and miss for me, hence 4🌟, but I did find me a new fave indie author, yay!
I loved the following stories & this is why:
6/5🌟 Spellbound by A.D.Luna - Shayna is a human girl adopted by vampires and no, it’s not for what you think. The vamps wanted to be as normal as they could be, down to pretending magic doesn’t exist. So, it’s rather unfortunate that Shayna discovers she is a witch & is accepted to a prestigious wizarding academy. The beat & darkly sarky tone of this story reminded me of Meg Cabot’s Mediator series crossed with Harry Potter (but female). I instantly loved Shayna and Elliott and their unfurling sweet attraction. I was glued to the pages. Peddle faster, Ariel and get that Bewitched sequel out coz I wanna read it! New fave inidie author!
5/5🌟 Amanda Marin’s YA revamped retelling of the Little Mermaid was sweet - it had a siren instead of a mermaid as the MC. Corisande is a siren studying how to keep her curse under wraps at the Magwitch Academy. Despite precautions, one day she lures & almost kills Noah. While the story follows Ariel’s for the most part (even down to the pain the girl feels when she tries to be with the boy), there are some notable and enjoyable differences. So for me, it was a fun revamped retelling. The novel has an interesting premise - have you ever thought how the siren feels when her song lures men to their graves? What if sirens were physically unable NOT to sing? And what would happen to the siren if the man she lured didn’t die? It’s a short and sweet but still rollercoaster emotional easy read with some secrets unravelling along the way. There is something more powerful than a True Love’s Kiss, who knew? And yes, there is a HEA, sorry Andersen.
5/5🌟Captured by the Fae by M.Guida - Demon Princess Kara is sold into slavery to Fae King Cormac coz her father wanted some dark spells. I loved Kara finding her feet & her stubornness as well as the twists & turns of this story and hope there’s a sequel, tbh coz come on, a demon princess and an unseelie prince Kieran’s budding romance could turn epic! Some f-word profanities in there, so if you expect all stories to be clean&Christian, you’ve been warned.
4/5🌟Cruel Spells by Diane Riggins - Raven, a dark witch is an outcast at her school & then her parents send her off to live with her aunt to learn the craft. It starts as a bit of a mystery in the vein on Beautiful Creatures - of something sinister about to happen. Captivating writing. It’s clearly a prequel to the author’s main work, considering the hook, but probably not a standalone, although it is a sample of writing.
4/5 🌟Powerless by Laurie Treacy - Ghost Whisperer meets Ghost Busters feel but Pinborough’s Behind Her Eyes twists - Kat is a college student, cupcake decorator & paranormal investigator, harrassed by a ghost dude that she feels strangely attached to. Loved the twist in the end.
4/5🌟 as too raw. How To Raise The Dead by R.C. Barnes - Echo is a tattoo reader at a troubled teens house slash rehab. Mystery paranormal, but the aetting is a bit too close to home, so not entertainment for me, I’m afraid.
3/5🌟 as not my cuppa. Under the Red Reign by Lily Luchesi - Dudes, cars, mancrushes & vamp fighting. Calvin, the preppy privileged kid has a crush on Ross, the school bad boy. Together, they set out to defeat demon Lilith to save their world after humans become food for the undead. Loved the twist in the end.
3.5/5🌟 as college music scene is not my cuppa. Apocalyptic Records by DJ Shaw - Bianca wanted to be a rock star ever since she was 3 & now she’s in college, auditioning to replace a singer in a band with a battle of the bands looming…when the tale turns onto a detective & demon story, would have loved to have had some inkling of paranormal a lot earlier.
I was given an ARC of this anthology and am leaving me review voluntarily.
I enjoyed Riggins style of writing. This an anthology entitled Magic and Malice. Cruel Spells being one of the novels in the box set. I am not going to go into detail of each of the novellas in the Book, but rather want to encourage you to pick up this set and read each and every one. You will soon find out that each author has quite different writing style. Try to read each you cannot go wrong. The stories are phantasies. Each one is well written with a focus on paranormal and fantasy. Each will grab a hold of your mind and hold onto it until the end. Each and every one of the stories come to a solid conclusion with no cliff hangers, but each does give you a solid feel for those particular authors background and accomplishments. Be prepared to be drawn into a story of a variety of joy, sorry and perhaps even some horror. Allow you mind to be open and you will be taken for a glorious ride. I received this novel from StoryOrigin.
Review for A Song of Salt & Secrets by Amanda Marin story in this collection.
I really liked reading this story from this collection. It gives a great view of Sirens opposite of what one would think they are like. That they aren’t all out to lure men to their doom with their beautiful deadly song. The main character and her love interest are so cute together. Gives me that young first love feels. They were able to overcome the curse. It was a good story. And i wouldn’t mind reading more stories like this.
My Review is for Amanda Marin’s A song of salt and secrets Told with a twist on the Little Mermaid we meet a siren instead of a mermaid and she goes to an academy to learn to control her curse. It’s a fantastic story as our mc Corisande accidentally lures Noah to run his ship aground and once rescued they fall in love but don’t forget she is a siren which doesn’t bode well for most. I love the way the author pulls you into the story, love the twists and the different take on the mythology that is told to us about sirens and all in all it was a great story that I couldn’t put down.
In Cruel Spells by Diane Riggins, we read about a series of dichotomies: Are the powers of dark witches and light witches simply a matter of type and tendency? Or are the dangers and temptations for ill intentions more likely with one type or the other?
In a family where at least one young female in every generation is gifted with dark magic, the separation of sisters might prove to be more than skills based convenience.
The struggles and training have only barely begun, with more action and family drama seemingly ahead .
Absolutely fantastic collection of stories that will have you wanting to keep reading One story in particular had me binge reading “Spellbound “ by A D Luna
