Even though this series has excelled at world building, I honestly did not expect the final book to have even more of it. It is full to the brim with world building, lore and character development, even more so than all the previous books, or so it felt like it to me.

At times, it felt like it was almost too packed with new information, the plot in this book definitely moved at a very fast pace. Lots of new plot developments, characters, and this book ties up and expands upon a lot of the lore and world that was built back in the first book.

I was quite happy with the ending, although it did feel like everything that happened in the last portion of the book happened really fast. The pacing of this book was definitely not like in the previous ones, it was much more rapid.

But honestly, I cannot take any of that against this book, because the entire series has been nothing but top quality. Highly engrossing world that is rich with detail and lore, very lovable main character, lots of action and intrigue - it has it all. A lot of the questions in this book were answered, but many others were also left unanswered, and it seems like it left the world open to possible sequels or even spinoffs. And honestly, the universe in this series is so vast and rich with lore that I could easily see several other series either continuing it or branching out from it.

This series was, by far, one of the better dragon fantasy series that I've read in a long time, and it left me feeling very excited for whatever else Robert Vane writes in the future. From start to finish, The Remembered War was an absolute joy to read, and is worthy of all the praise and the 5 star ratings.

A satisfying conclusion to the series.

Overall, I was happy with the series as a whole and enjoyed the journey. For being a self-published first series by the author, it was well done (compared to the independent fantasy genre on Amazon) with minor typos and some rough edges in pacing and plot.

My only real criticism is how rushed the ending felt, my Kindle said 10% of the book was left and it led me to believe that there would be another book to tie everything together, but it concluded in the remaining pages to the detriment of the emotional impact and character resolution.

Looking forward to more stories to come!

In unexpected turns of events, Bayloo comes to understand more of his purpose and powers. Things accelerate in the last quarter of the book, but that is not to say the other 3/4 are uneventful. Rather, the last 1/4 is really fast pacing (but not overlooking things).
Revelations from the Oracle in book 3 already hinted that the world of this story was likely set after the fall of an advanced technological civilization, and this only confirms. So far, it could even be set in a distant future of our own world, a world as much transformed as this of HG Wells's "Time Machine". This is one of these where fantasy and scifi seem to blur together, after all, some scifi authors are quite liberal in their assumptions (Iain M. Banks's Culture series for example) in such way that can make the frontier between scifi and fantasy lie more in the way things are described (magic vs pseudo-scientific).
If the rust is eventually cleansed, a dire price has to be paid by Bayloo and one wonders if he will overcome or merely collapse from the blow.
Even though the most immediate threats have been dealt with, the new order could bring anywhere.
In some ways, this made me feel like after finishing JFR Coates "Destiny of dragons", for it adroitly give the reader some some hard blows and at the same time leaves place for hope.
I am curious to see if there will be other books in the wake of this.
PS : the age rating of the first book on amazon is definitely a screwup from a drug addled algorithm. Glad I still had a look at reviews and samples and picked up that series.

I'll start by saying that I really did like this book. It was a good way to wrap up the series, and while I do have a couple questions, they're not significant to the point where I can't appreciate this book.

As usual, the author's writing was impeccable. I'm not sure at all what other reviewers from previous books meant when they said there were grammatical errors. Either I don't see them or they really aren't there (or this is an updated version of the book) but regardless, this is one of the only series where I have no complaints about the writing. Sometimes when reading an otherwise good book, I find awkward word choices or phrasing that I would have written differently.

Not so with this series. I think it's beautifully written.

I also encourage people to read the series, so I'm not going to post a lot of spoilers about the parts of the book I enjoyed. I will say that I loved the whole part around Oster. I loved the lore of the Pale Wrights, though I would have liked more. That whole area was amazingly and lovingly written, and it was just so fun to read.

I loved this whole story, and I can't wait to read more from this author.

So, some spoilers are going to follow because I can't really get into why this book only has 4 stars instead of 5 without MAJOR spoilers. If you don't want to know, stop reading now and go enjoy the book. If you're curious, read on. But this WILL spoil the ending.

Anyway, I love the author's writing, but after such an epic tale, the ending was kind of a bummer. I can really only take one star off for that, though, because it was SO well written, and I'm sure some of my complaints are opinions. I'm sure there are a lot of people who will like this ending, but it wasn't for me.

Even so, I would highly recommend this series. Some of the best fantasy I've read in a very long time.

This review is for the whole series. It's fucking good, like really good. Usually when I read, I can identify tropes and estimate where the plot is going to go, but not once in this book series. Absolutely stunning how magic is blended with scifi(in the later books).

Here goes my thought vomit.

I'm so sad this is the last book as I've been really enjoying the whole series. I'm glad the book managed to tie up most of the main points (I still wanted to know more about the tigris), although at some points I felt it was a little rushed, and especially felt some of the characters, especially Harlan, didn't get enough.. resolution at the end? :( I think he was my favourite character.

I'm glad we got to see his wife, although once she appeared I felt like Harlan took a big step back from his usual charm and dialogue in the book, and we didn't really get a final conversation between him and Bayloo which I would have appreciated. Or even all the main characters just getting together, or even scenes individually of them enjoying life after the 'great evil' has been defeated would be have really heartwarming.

The battle scenes were as epic and vivid as always. Really loved the continued worldbuilding even when it was the last book. The whole continued mystery around the original creators of the new world was great. I still want to know more about them and the world before. Not sure if I liked or disliked that.

I'm curious why the author decided to go the route of Legoa (can't remember how to spell her name - the Protector) seeming to threaten Bayloo about his slave mark at the end of the 4th book? I thought that would have palyed a bigger role than just perhaps reminding Bayloo of his routes leading up to the 5th book's main setting. I thought Bayloo's old masters, or Legoa(?) would somehow try to use it in a new way with Bayloo. And maybe there would be more emotional impact with Harlan seeing how Bayloo used to be like before he freed himself, or something like that.

I wish we got to see more of the Pale Wrights before the 5th book, even though I know they're supposed to be very secluded characters, I just feel it would have made a bigger impact as they felt too newly-introduced to play such a big role in the final book of the series.

Also, what was happening with the leviathans and the rust? Did the leviathans get through the Wall of Fire? How did the rust attach themselves to the leviathans if they lived underwater? What happened to the ghastleys?? What happened to Vengeance? We hadn't seen Vengeance in a while, with the other ghastleys communicating with Bayloo once things got a bit more serious. I hope Vengeance is ok :(

I did feel that all the books in this series had very abrupt and sudden endings (maybe because I don't look down at the percentage counter / page number in the ebooks enough) but usually I start to feel when a book is ending before it does, but with this series it kind of just suddenly.. ends. Which wasn't necessarily a bad thing because the books were evidently going to continue. While the last book did a better job than the rest of the books in the series at wrapping things up and having an ending that felt like an ending, there was still so much I wanted to seee.

Anyways, it was still a really good book though and I thoroughly enjoying reading it and the entire series. The whole concept of this series is great. I loved seeing the entire narrative from a dragon's / Bayloo's perspective, and I really enjoyed his dynamic with Harlan.

Harlan was such an enjoyable character to read.

I also wanted to know more about the human-dragon relationship at the end. What's going on in the world's politics since that played such a big role throughout the books? Were there new laws made to abolish slavery? Were all the ghastleys freed? How are the slave dragons faring - did they cross the wall of fire again to take more vengeance?

I don't usually have this many thoughts that immediately jump to my head that I could write in a review when I finish a book, so this story must be doing something right :) even if it's just me wanting to see more, I think because I really did care for a lot of these characters / side characters, which I don't always do.

Alright, that's it from me. Otherwise I feel like I'm nitpicking.

Great series.

An excellent end to an excellent series, 4.5/5 stars. The series did such a good job at slowly revealing the world and its mysterious history, that I don't think I can say I've ever seen before done so well with every detail in the previous books fitting into this huge feat of worldbuilding, even from stuff that seemed so simple and straightforward in the first book like the Pale Wrights. The mystery just kept me hooked at every turn, and even when I thought I'd figured it out there was still more to learn.

What docked half a star for me was the pacing. I felt like the book could've used some more time between the freeing of the Rolm dragons and the final destruction of the rust, but I was also glad to see all the time spent on the east side of the Wall of Fire, bringing together everything that had happened in Book 1 with the rest of the series. I also would've liked perhaps a bit of a longer epilogue than what was there to wrap more things up. Still, the book held strong and was consistent quality with the previous ones.

Bayloo makes his way to Rolm across the Wall of Fire in the hopes of freeing his fellow dragons. In the land of his past enslavement he must make new allies, confront new and old enemies and attempt to find the aurathorn that freed him from his shackles.

Will Bayloo, the strange dragon who thinks and feels too much like the humans, be able to put right the wrongs of the past and perhaps save the future for all humans and dragons alike?

This was a pretty decent ending to the 5 books worth of Bayloo’s tale. It also left a decent opening to any potential sequels or side stories which would be interesting to read, particularly a story from his sister’s POV. Definitely haven’t read books from a dragon’s POV and it was certainly a very interesting premise.

Great world building/lore and plot.
I loved this pentalogy and I have a hunch it isn't over. I love the lore and the world created by the author. The story is strongly built and the characters are defined and nuanced. The plot of the story is engaging from book 1 to 5, new adventures and unimaginable things reveal with every turn of the page. I consider myself now a fan of Robert Vane and hope to read more of his works. I would love to see this masterpiece turned into movies. It is totally worth it

Dragons here, Dragons there

For dragon lovers, this series checks all boxes. The main character named Bayloo isn't the typical hero dragon. He isn't bigger or faster or more beautiful, but he is the epitome of all things magical. The books take the reader on the long and sometimes painful journey of Bayloo's discovery of himself while saving the world of course. Excellent reading.

Interesting finale!

I really liked how all the parties to the end of the world came together to find a fix for their problems. The pale weights were pretty much vampires who drinks the blood of their ancestors haha. Was super sad that bayboos love died though 😢. But it did make the story more real. Enjoyed reading a book from a dragons perspective! That made it very interesting.

The great Bayloo💕

The live way the story was told, it felt was if I could feel and see Bayloo. What a wonderful experience to be able to see the world thru his eyes and hearts. I only wished that Rinxia was allowed to share in the conquest of destroying the rust.. this would have allowed Bayloo to finally find love. I recommend this book to all who love seeing the world thru the eyes of a dragon, who shared his love and mind to save the world…
I give this series a five, because it was inspiring, interesting and full of wonderful moments.

Distracting

I found this book to be as good as the previous four. I was however distracted at different parts for incorrect usage of words, such as ruins instead of runes or something small like “at” instead of “of” It seemed spellchecker was properly used, but a grammar checker was left out. Enough, the book was a good read.

Good series

I almost gave this series 4 stars, because of a few things that I regarded as mistakes, just one of which was the lack of using heavy weapons against the behemoths. Where were the ballista in the battles to stop them?
But that does not distract much from the overall story, which is excellent, hence the five stars

dragons and magic. what’s mor to like?

Sorry the series is done. I could have read endlessly about this strange world from the viewpoint of a dragon. I suspect it’s supposed to be a cautionary tale. Maybe it was our world after polar caps melted. Nothing but volcanoes and islands.

One of the best!

Must read if you love adventure, dragons and magic. Mr Vane has created a fascinating world and embodied the characters with depth, humor and humaneness. Be it the best or the worst. I look forward to what comes next as like in real life, the struggle never ends nor does the search for hope, love and happiness

Interesting about a dragon's that knew dragon's and human's good and bad

It was a long and complicated story. I enjoyed the relationship between Bayloo( the main dragon) and his human friend Harlan. The way their friendship developed was very interesting. The relationship between Bayloo had with others characters in the was also very interesting.

Very nice conclusion! The ending felt a bit rushed, and there were some unresolved issues with the tigris, and I'm still curious what the ash dragons were doing while the fire-breathers dealt with the rust. But all in all in a was a good finale.
