I know this is my second lowest rating of the Slayers series, but the ‘bones’ of it really weren’t so bad. I liked the H, I liked getting more nuggets about past hs & Hs than usual, & the opening handful of chapters setting up the plot (trying to resist each other) — err…or almost setting up, that didn’t even feel quite finished —.

I guess what’s becoming a problematic trend for the series is while the bones are typically fine — good even —, usually I like the cast of characters & I’m definitely a fan of the running sports trope(hockey to be exact) yet particularly in the last few of the series, the plot feels blown through & either choppy or unfinished/underdeveloped. I prefer time to sink in the moments along the way that develops the romance & connect with the characters. The H did such a severe about-face & the plot sped up so much, I think I got whiplash 🤦🏻‍♀️ . Had there been time to invest more in several installments, I probably would’ve easily given more than one book of the Slayers series 4 stars or better, because MLK has more than enough ideas I do find appealing.

Also here in Dirty D-man, the heroine herself just felt unfinished. At the start, for a few chapters, she was cute & feisty giving the H a hard time. They got together fairly quickly & it just seemed like the character stalled out the rest of the way. She was just all about the H & paying back her parents for schooling she never finished by working jobs she finds no fulfillment from. There wasn’t any character development otherwise imho.

I am obsessed with Bowie and Piper now! 😍 Over protective brothers best friend, forced proximity 🫠🫠🫠

This is the 7th book in Mira Lyn Kelly’s Slayers Hockey Series. It can be read as standalone, but will get minor spoilers from other books.

Bowie and Boomer (Piper’s brother) live together and are both NHL players. After a freak incident Boomer has to stay at his parents and Piper needs a room to crash for a few weeks.

I loved and felt connected to Piper so much. She works so hard and is so selfless and it hurt that everyone thought she was reckless and not serious about life. Bowie 🫠🫠 he was so grumpy and broody trying to keep his feelings tucked away for Piper, was so happy when he finally acted. Their chemistry was 🔥🔥 I just loved their banter.

Cannot wait to read more in the series. Thank you to the author and Wordsmith Publicity for the advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

This book was surprisingly compelling. I say surprisingly because the main plot was nothing new, and some things were left out of the story that would have been great to develop. But despite those flaws, I enjoyed it a lot.

I felt Piper was way more developped than Bowie. We learn her past and her mistakes, and we see how she behaves and how she thinks now. We also see her struggles with the situation. She’s a character on her own, with a life and a mind.

On the other hand, we barely see anything about Bowie. The author insists that Piper’s family has become his, yet she never really explains why his birth family isn’t around–there are maybe one or two sentences about it, and nothing about Bowie’s feelings about it. He’s a black man, but besides showing the contrast between Piper and him, and the mention of interracial romcoms, it has absolutely no impact on his life. I’m not asking for huge drama, just an acknowledgment. We see plenty of him and his actions speak for themselves, but there’s barely any background. It left me a bit frustrated.

Because I wanted to love him absolutely. I almost managed to, because the way he acted around his teammates, around the Boerboom family, around his best friend, and of course around Piper, made him a loveable guy. Supportive. Considerate. Responsible. Passionate. Reliable. All good qualities for a good book boyfriend.

There wasn’t much hockey on the ice, but the team dynamics were here, on the page–with a brief appearance of a favorite character, yay! What’s at stake when there’s tension between teammates, the way guys on the same line learn to play together, the support but also the nosiness, all of this was shown in this story.

There was a bit of sexy, but what I enjoyed the most was how their interactions went from cute and heartfelt to seriously hot. You could feel the love way before they admitted it, in the way they touched and kissed.

As he’s almost the third person in this relationship, Piper’s brother, Boomer, was a big part of the story. His injury, his recovery, and his fears for his future, were the drama element of this book, and it made me excited about the next novel in the series!

Quickie

- Series: Slayers hockey #7 (can be read as a standalone)
- Hashtags: #hockey romance #brother’s best friend #roommates to lovers #interracial romance #virgin
- Triggers: injury
- Main couple: Piper Boerboom & Grant Bowie
- Hotness: 3/5
- Romance: 4/5
- + I loved the way Bowie supported and believed in Piper
- – I want to know who leaked the scoop!

okay despite the low rating this wasn’t bad. i randomly picked this book up because i saw it on instagram and it’s like the seventh book in a series so i’m not sure why i decided i should read it. it very obvious that these characters are already established because i felt like i was missing parts of the story. also this book should’ve been marketed as a novella because that’s what it read like. it was short and to the point, like i read this is an hour. there wasn’t much conflict and it was very low stakes. my only strong complaint is that it felt slightly unfinished at times, like certain parts of the story needed to be stronger. this couples history could’ve made for a very angsty story it just wasn’t developed at all. like i said this wasn’t bad, despite the low rating, i just think i would’ve enjoyed it more if i was attached to this world or the story was fleshed out better.

It was a very sweet story, exactly what i needed after so many dark and twisty things i read.

I'm too cold now for a review plus i start classes in 1h so i need to get ready.
But i am a huge fan of the best friends's off-limits lil sister trope.

And Mira Lyn Kelly knows how to write 'em.

Disappointing hockey novella

I checked out this novella in audiobook format through Hoopla. Unfortunately, I'm not a big fan of the, "I can't date my BFF's sister" trope, and this novel did nothing to win me over to it by providing a terrific relationship between the FMC and MMC.

The reason I typically struggle with this trope is that it so unbelievable. What man in the real world of the USA would not wish his sister to marry his BFF, a man he deeply respects and cares about? It is a somewhat reasonable motivation if the brother decides the MMC is such a promiscuous dog that he couldn't possibly settle down into a loving, monogamous relationship with the sister, and would inevitably break her heart. But that's not the case here. The brother is simply a narcissistic jerk, and he is the one who is a promiscuous dog. Speaking of which, starting the story with the promiscuous brother having acquired an STD that has caused a massive, swelling infection of one of his testicles is one of the grossest opening scenes I've ever read. What a repellent way to start a romance novel! Ugh!

By the way, the MMC is Black, but the cover doesn't portray him that way. In addition, the token multicultural element of this story is essentially meaningless. It has no effect on the life of the MMC or on the romantic relationship.

Oh man. This was so good!
Overprotective brother's best friend?
Best friend's sister?
Forced proximity with simmering lots of tension?
Yes, yes and yesssssss!

It was entertaining. Steamy. Fun. I loved Bowie and Piper's chemistry and banter. I felt a genuine connection, and I didn't feel like the complications between them were unrealistic or forced. I genuinely liked both characters by themselves, and together - especially together.

I love that Mira Lyn Kelly has added some diversity into this series, with Bowie being black. I feel hockey romances in general lack diversity, so when I come across a non-white character in a hockey romance, I take notice, and appreciate it. And while not said, there are some implications that Piper is demisexual, which is pretty cool. Even if she isn't, I love that Mira has shown through a character that not everyone feels attraction the way others do, and some people need that deep connection with someone to feel that way.

Bowie and Piper were hot, hot, HOT, and there were just enough hints dropped for the next book in the series that has me excited for that one too! Highly recommend this series!

I was so excited for Bowie and Piper's story and so disappointed after I listened to it. This is literally my least favorite book in the series.

First, they had almost no chemistry really other than the "I've crushed on you forever" thing without really feeling like that's true. Even when they were together it just felt like a FWB thing vs. a love thing.

Second, the absolute lack of respect for Piper by EVERYONE drove me insane. She's working her ass off at three jobs and just because she was young and trying to figure out life for a few years, people totally blow off her being serious about anything. Her brother is the absolute worst about it and even Bowie doesn't defend her when others talk shit about her. No wonder her confidence sucks with no one believing in her.

Third, her brother is an absolute ass. He's so stuck up about wanting the attention that he tries to force his best friend to break up with her. Not because he cares about what may hurt her but just because he doesn't want them together. Like what kind of absolute bullshit is that? I hate (and love) the brother's best friend trope but usually there's a reason for it like worrying that the sister will get hurt. That's not the case here. I just couldn't get over that and it really ruined the last bit of the story for me. I'm still convinced he's the one who leaked the story to the press and caused that mess too.

One thing I'm realizing I don't like as I get into these later books is that part of the reason I read hockey romances is because of the bromances between teammates and I just don't feel that in this series. The first few seemed to be a close knit group but now they feel like standalones that just kind of mention the other player without them really making up any real part of the story. In the other books Boomer and Bowie really seemed like they were BFFs but even though it's implied in this book I don't really feel the friendship.

Grant Bowie the man you aaaaaaaaare

I LOVE a brother’s best friend/best friend’s trope and this was such a fun take on it. We love a girlie who is misunderstood and judged by those around her and is working hard to change her life around. And we love a protective possessive man who is just trying to be a good person and friend. And we especially love when they come together and it’s like fireworks.

Honestly was surprised at how much I loved Bowie after seeing glimpses of him in the first books where he and Boomer had such a bromance and seemed to be manwhores (turns out Bowie actually never super was, by the sounds of it, although I’m unsure how we’re going to make Boomer a love interest in the next book after all we’ve seen of him so far). And it was fun getting to see players at different stages of their careers, I feel it’s not something we see in a lot of sports romances.

I did feel there were a few sub plot points that were a little underdeveloped (Bowie’s family situation, why Piper was working so many jobs, etc), but overall they weren’t super relevant to the plot and on the other hand I do appreciate the length and ease of these books without too many extra factors weighing them down so I really can’t complain.

Anyway, loved this one and in a major shock to me Bowie may be one of my fave guys from the series?? Go figure.

Dirty D-Man by Mira Lynn Kelly was like my favorite comfort food. It has some of my favorite tropes like forced proximity, brother’s best friend and slow burn. This sports romance built up the tension sweetly and then the spice entered the field! Piper and Bowie made me swoon and smile. They had an emotional journey.

NHL star defenseman Grant Bowie has no defense when it comes to his team mate and best friend Boomer's sister Piper. He has successfully avoided the temptation so long by distancing himself but now Piper is his roommate because of some emergency and Boomer is at home for his injury. Piper thinks her crush is one sided but this situation is getting dicey..

I loved Piper so much. It really hurts that everyone thinks she is impulsive and reckless and has no seriousness about life. But the fact is she is trying hard to do the right thing always. She has a colorful personality and she wants to live fully but she is not the irresponsible or flighty person everyone labels her to be. She is sweet and sassy. And she doesn't understand why Bowie acts so stiff and brooding with her while he is the nicest guy to everyone else. The fact is he has been hiding his attraction and true emotions behind the mask. He is so dreamy! The way he takes care of Piper, the way he believes in her when no one else does, the way he gets jealous and possessive, the way he deals with his unrequited feels so many years..he is the best book boyfriend package.
But living together was an entirely different ballgame. Their chemistry was too hot to resist. I loved how this was a beautiful slow burn. Piper and Bowie has this sweet friendship full of banter and fun. And then the magnetic attraction took over after a point. Now men will be men and Bowie tried to push her away for sake of his best friend but he realised that Piper is his life. He did hurt her but he groveled so pretty! I am really glad that Piper's brother didn't drag the drama too far and he was pretty reasonable after some time. I love the bromance in the team and hoping to pick up the books by the other players.

4.5 Hot Stars

ARC was provided by the author for an honest review. This book gives me all the feels. I had such a hard time putting it down! Of course this book held par with the entire series! There has been so much build up around Piper, aka Baby Boomer. Boomer and Bowie having their mile long protective streak around her meant someone would have to break through a lot of walls to get to her… Unless that someone ends up being the one available guy inside that wall already…

Even though no one else is good enough for Piper, including Bowie himself, it’s only so long before he starts to crack and break from the tension of being in such close proximity to her without Boomer as a buffer between them. Piper is always so hard on Bowie because she has been trying to suppress her own feelings for years, and with him being so indifferent to her, this is the only interaction she has with him.

There is tension, banter, comic relief, emotional roller coaster, and steamy scenes that make this book amazing. It has a little bit of everything, and I especially enjoyed Piper’s character development and the strength she shows throughout the book. The only thing keeping me from giving it a full 5 stars if the fact I was a little disappointed with the building tension between Bowie and Piper in the beginning. It’s there, and it’s fine, I was just expecting a tad bit more based off the build up from previous books.

I love the update from old characters, I love the prelude to Boomers story, and I love above all, the lengths Bowie is willing to go to prove his feelings and prove that Piper is so much more than she believes herself to be at times. I loved it and can’t wait for more. I am shamelessly obsessed with these Slayers hockey men 😏

I was given an eARC copy of this book from WordSmith Publicity for an honest review.

I think Bowie is now my new favorite Slayer. I loved everything about Bowie and Piper's story, even the way Boomer originally reacted! It was so on-point for these boys and their friendship. A lot of people will argue that romance tropes are fake and would never happen in real life, but my best friend from high school did end up married to her older brother's best friend - so it's totally possible haha

Boomer and Bowie have been best friends forever - Bowie even lived with Boomer and his family when they were kids. Bowie has always tried to hide his attraction to Piper, and she's always had a crush on him. When Boomer ends up having to move back home after surgery and complications, Piper ends up living with Bowie until her new apartment is ready. Can they keep their hands off each other? The answer is most definitely no haha!

The crushing and the longing and the jealousy and the pull end in a hot moment they can't take back. They are both guilt-ridden, but they can't seem to stop. Their connection is undeniable and their chemistry is off the charts!

Bowie and Piper have a strange relationship. They've been in each other's lives since kids and somewhere in between things changed how they see each other. But after years of her hoping and him denying, their feelings come out in full swing. But no matter how happy they are, there are still obstacles that they need to overcome and those obstacles are not so easily moved.

She wants to make his life easier by leaving, but Bowie has finally come to terms with his strong feelings for her, and he's determined to prevent that from happening. And I was so happy for his determination, because of it, the love they feel for each other will not let them give up on the HEA.

I'm finishing this review by saying that at this time I could care less for her brother (hero of the next book). He's gonna need to jump through a lot of hoops to get back at my good gracious. But since Piper and Bowie found their way back into each other's arms, he's off to a good start.

I am grateful to have been given an ARC of Mira Lyn Kelly’s newest book in the Slayers hockey world — Dirty D-Man and it was worth the wait! The bromance between Bowie and Boomer is amazing and when the sparks between Bowie and Boomer’s little sister finally take hold, it puts a friendship to the test.

Reasons I Recommend:

1 The camaraderie between not only the team but the WAGS is so good! I laughed out loud when even the women started suggesting “be the bunny” as advice.

2 From best friend’s little sister, from enemies to lovers, from first time romance, from I will protect you — this story had it all. Grant may have been against it, but once he put his mind towards something, there was no turning back and

3 Boomer’s reactions were somehow infuriating, hilarious, and well worth it. The water glass was just chef’s kiss!

This story was so good! Best friends little sister, hot hockey player, what more could you want! 5 hockey stars for this one!
When Bowie gets woken up by his bestie, Boomer, with a huge problem, his friend is rushed to the hospital, and while there Bowie finds out that Piper is moving in with them, well rather him now since Boomer will be staying at his parents home till he recovers. Piper has had a crush on him forever, and this will put them to the test when she tries making him jealous, and actually succeeds! But he's worried because she is his besties sister, but he's known her for years now, and has noticed she's beautiful.
What happens when they cross the line? Will his friendship with Boomer be destroyed? You have to read this and find out.
All the feels in this one, I loved every page of it! Grab it asap!

Every man has his limit, and this girl is mine 🫶

3.75 ⭐️ *ARC Review*

This hockey series has been so much fun and this one brings us Boomer’s bestie Bowie and his litter sister Piper. *Insert immediate regret from Boomer offering Piper the guest room at their apartment*

Boomer and Bowie have been attached at the hip since they were young so why wouldn’t he think his sister is safest with his best friend while he’s away? Sure, Bowie will look out for her…maybe a little too well. Piper has always gone from one disaster to another and the latest being in between places to live. Bowie has made it a point to stay away from her since she’s not a kid anymore and his bestie would unalive him if he knew the thoughts in his head. But now that they are in each other’s vicinity it’s hard to deny feelings…now just a matter of breaking the news to his overprotective big bro. Good luck…eek

These two were so cute together the frenemies to lovers banter and tension were so good. These two knew how to get under each other’s skin…in more ways then one lol. And when Bowie is all in, he is all in and will fight any obstacles in their way including a very angry best friend. Can’t wait to see how the tables are turned in the next book on Boomer.

"I'm too much and not enough all at once."

This book was super cute! I have never read a book by this author before and enjoyed her writing very much!

Piper and famous hockey player, Grant Bowie are the best kind of romance. Bowie and Boomer have been best friends for years. Piper has always had a crush on Bowie, but it was clear he never had returned feelings. One day, Bowie comes home and realizes Piper is no longer a little girl, but a woman. The feelings he starts to feel cannot happen, so from that point on, he steps back. Decides to no longer acknowledge little Piper...because in his fantasies.... she's definitely not the younger sister type he remembers.

Now, years later... Bowie is faced with a situation he can't get out of. Piper needs a place to stay and guess whose lucky place she's staying. Has Piper moved on? What will Bowie do, once he realizes he can have everything he really wants. Will he be forced to choose between Piper and his best friend in the whole world? What will happen when his career and everything he knows is on the line?
Every man has his limit, and this girl is mine.

"Every man has his limit, and this girl is mine."

This book was very cute! I enjoyed Piper and Bowies story and while the temptations were scorching, I felt like it was lacking the actual heat I was craving when things finally went through. I am going to go back and start this series from the beginning. I enjoyed the authors writing and the storyline, just wanted a bit more heat. I look forward to reading more from this author!

This is such a fun, low angst, steamy read that I devoured very quickly!
Bowie and Piper have had a connection for years but her insecurities and his bromance with her brother have always prevented them from being honest with not just themselves but each other also.

Forced to stay together there is no escaping their attraction! As secrets are revealed and tempers get frayed I was cheering for Bowie and Piper….

It’s so great to be back with the team and I can’t wait for Flirty Mr Boomer up next!!

2/5 🌶️🌶️ (why'd she have to be a virgin?)

3.5/5 soap opera

I'm reading another book that's really intense, so this cheesey garage is exactly what I need. When they were in the middle of kissing and the ambulance arrived for her brother, I did a spit take. I couldn't handle it. All the monologues are unrealistic and I loved it. It was sort and sweet and I'm a raccoon enjoying this trash.

This series keeps getting cuter and hotter, which is not usually my jam but, I'm digging it. Bonus points for the interracial couple diversity; would be nice to get a green eyed beauty into the rotation or a hot latina. 🔥

Absolutely LOVED Piper and Bowie's story!

Best friend's little sister is such a fun trope (WHY did I only have a younger brother? The great tragedy of my life...) and Mira Lyn Kelly does such a great job with it here. The push and pull Bowie feels between wanting Piper and needing to respect his friendship with Boomer is delicious, and when he finally capitulates it's equally delicious and OMG so hot.

At the same time, Ms Kelly had me LOLing out loud through the entire book--honestly, everything about this book was ridiculously fabulous. I was torn between needing to get to their HEA--especially once we got to their black moment--and wanting to slow down and make it all last longer. Knowing that Brodie's book is next was a definite consolation, though. I absolutely cannot wait--especially after all the grief he gave his sister and best friend here--but if I never have to think about the medical issue that conveniently moved him out of the way so their journey to an HEA could get underway, that will be fine with me...[shudder]

Though this is the seventh book in the series, it works just fine as a standalone. But if you're a fan of hockey romance, why do that to yourself? Read them all!

Rating: 4 1/2 stars / A

Universal

Piper has always crushed on her brother Boomer's friend, teammate and roommate, Bowie, but it seems something is keeping him from admitting he might share her feelings. Now that they're roommates, it's her chance to get him to finally give into whatever lays between them. She knows they can be good together, if only he'd let himself be with her.

Bowie's never been able to admit that he sees Piper as more than his friend's little sister, the irresponsible screwup sister. He knows Boomer would blow a gasket if Bowie even laid an eye wrong on her, and he cannot lose Boomer's friendship. But when she moves in, the forced proximity sparks to flame their chemistry, and suddenly they're sneaking around all while knowing Boomer's going to freak when (if) he finds out. Will they decide it's too much and give up on their evolving relationship? Or stand up to Boomer and show him how much they mean to each other?

I love the angst of the friend's forbidden sister trope. Bowie is so tormented by this that he had hurt Piper more than once, so thank God she moved in with him because there was no way he could resist her for long once that happened. She's adorable and sweet, and honestly I couldn't see in her what her reputation supposedly was. I would have liked a bit more detail and clarification on why she was considered a flake, because in this story, she is hardworking and strong, the kind of character I'd love to be friends with in my own life. Bowie is delicious, equally strong but tortured, and deserved the great woman he finally admits is the love of his life. I love the Slayers Hockey world, and cannot wait for the biggest flirt, Boomer, to find love next.

This is Bowie and Piper's story. I love a good best friend's sister story because it is almost always a little forbidden. Bowie has been fighting his feelings for his best friend's sister for a long time, but it all comes bubbling to the surface when she becomes his new roommate. She's temptation at every turn. There is a reason why Piper has been crushing on Bowie so long he is one of the good ones. There is no way they can deny their burning hot chemistry. It gets quite steamy between these two. It's a good steamy read that I gobbled up in a day and half. I love when the characters have a connection that truly makes it all the more special and these two have it. I loved the tease for the next book in the series!! Can't wait for it!

"Every man has his limit, and this girl is mine."
I really enjoyed this new installment in the Slayers series. I have to confess Bowie came out of nowhere and became one of my top Mira heroes—I absolutely loved him! Piper is so good as well, and they absolutely fit together.

"There was a time when all I was after was this guy’s smile."
Here’s the situation. Piper’s been pining for Bowie since they were kids, but she doesn’t want to go there because he’s never cared that much about her. In fact, he seems to go out of his way to show her he doesn’t like her around… I wonder why…
Bowie? Well, he’s been into her forever, but it was never right.

"These are the arms I can turn to and know they will wrap around me and hold me tight."
Bowie plays with Boomer, Piper’s brother, so there’s that. And then there’s something that happened when they were kids that prevents him from going after her.
However, once Boomer is forced to stay at his parents to recover from an injury, Piper and Bowie find themselves living together.
And staying away is going to be a lot harder now.

"That’s why I can barely get through five minutes in this place without backing you up to the nearest wall. Why I can’t close my eyes without seeing you beneath me."
I loved the tension between them, and the banter. They like to push each other’s buttons, and Piper doesn’t let up—I loved that. It gets to a point where something’s gotta give… and it does.
And yes, it’s worth the wait. Both for them, and for us.

"She’s done waiting. And I’m done lying to myself and her and everyone we care about. I’m done letting us both down."
I loved them together. Once they stop fighting each other and what they’re feeling, they fit seamlessly. They’ve been right all their lives, they just didn’t want to chance it.
But some things are worth crossing the line for.

"If things go sideways… I’ll be right beside you. Loving you every step of the way."
It gave me the feels in the end, and Mira’s writing is on point when it comes to that. They belong together, and you’re rooting for them to go for it, everyone else be damned. It took them forever to get here, but they’ll be making the best of it now for sure.
