Weddings in the City #5

Pastries and Proposals

Rate this book
What was the worst day of my life ever? Today. My wedding day.
Not because I married a man I’d never met but because my husband, Wolf Van de Berg, hates my freaking guts—and the feeling is mutual.
I love weddings and wedding cake, but this wedding is one I wish I’d missed.
It’s worth it because I get thirty percent of his company if I can survive this marriage. But that’s a big, giant if.

And no, before you ask if we had a passionate night of hate and lust on our wedding night, think again.
Wolf is doing everything in his power to make me call it quits on our marriage.
My husband *eye roll* made me pitch a tent in his living room, stole my pretzel dog, and he won’t even let me use his freaking kitchen!

And you thought being married to a hot billionaire was glamorous.

The only way I’m surviving the marriage is with cake. And wine. And did I mention cake?
Smeared all over me as I flash Wolf in the kitchen…

Uh, wait! That was a mistake!

Also, why is he suddenly looking like he found something tasty in this marriage after all?

This is a full-length stand-alone enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy and comes extra loaded with ice cream and all the sprinkles, an awesome book bestie, hot, grouchy guys in suits, wedding drama, and a hopelessly romantic happily ever after!

I picked this book up because the blurb caught my attention and went into it thinking that it'd be a cute, light-hearted and funny rom-com but I'm sorry to say that it was horrible. Not due to the writing but because of the horrible, nasty and mean characters. The only character I like though was Wolf's friend Aaron because he was the only character who was sweet and nice to Sophie. This book has left me feeling so frustrated that no other book has ever before even if I've rated it one star. The only saving grace was the writing, witty dialogues and some humourous situations. Otherwise (this may seem harsh but I'm going to say it anyway) it was a waste of time.

I thought this romance quite funny. I really felt for poor Sophie who is a total sweetheart but totally meek. Wolf is quite the alpha and I have to admit it took me a while to warm up to him. However, this book is filled with some funny situations and it was fun to read.

The more I read of this author’s work, the more I think I understand it. It’s got all the snark and shenanigans of a Mel Brooks production, but that’s mixed with the dysfunctional family drama that reminds me more of Woody Allen. The characters are all a little exaggerated, however I think that in some ways that makes it easier to connect with them. Particularly her heroines. Like her besties and business partners, Sophie is a complete boss babe but also a hot mess. And Wolf, like most of the heroes that have come before him, is a complete and utter alpha-hole. Yet there are some quiet moments where we get to see what made him into the icy corporate scion he is today and discover a softer side to the ruthless predator. The banter between this unlikely pairing is top-notch and they kept me laughing for the whole book. I also loved that we got to see a Svensson cameo as well as the whole Weddings in the City crew. I’m not sure who the author is going to offer up next, but I kind of don’t care. I’m going to read the heck out of it regardless.

{Shaking Head in Disgust} . . .

Sophie Martin was delivering a cake for what she was told was a reunion party. Instead, an incensed bride screamed that the cake was hideous and she would need to bake another immediately. As Sophie's step-mother and her daughter, who was the bride, advanced on her threateningly, she backed up and caught her heel on the rug. As she fell backward with the cake, the tall man, who had watched every moment unfold, stepped back and let her fall. No one helped her up. And then she spotted her birth father and she would at last meet him! She was asked to leave by the others but then her father walked toward her, elated that he had another daughter (and his "joy" will be explained further along in the book)! However, his words of greeting at their joyous reunion were, “You need to marry Wolfram Van de Berg. Tomorrow.” It turned out “Wolfram” was the tall man who had let her fall on the floor and now wrinkled his nose in disgust.

This is a book full of nasty, mean, selfish, full-of-themselves, downright disgusting wealthy so-called people. The treatment they gave to each other, and most noticeably the disgraceful disrespect given to Sophie, was sickening. But she gets stuck marrying the dirtball. Will it last? Or will Sophie wise up and get out of there before she becomes just like them? Getting thirty percent of his company if she stays married to him is absolutely NOT worth it – whether he ever redeems himself or not.

So I thought that basically everyone, including Wolf, was AWFUL to Sophie. She was bullied big time. Half the book I was waiting on her to have some type of suicidal attempt or to just run away and give up. It was honestly hard for me to read because I liked her so much.

Wolf was a jerk to her and she was such a pleaser that even when she called him out on his crap, she still forgave it instantly. She was a pushover in every way.

I would have given this a 1 but I did enjoy the wit and sarcasm in the book. It's the only reason I was able to read through it. I am still upset with the treatment Sophie received. The other redeeming person in the story was Wolf's friend. He was so nice to Sophie and I kind of wish she would have dropped Wolf and ended up with him.

Hunter was awful and I hated how, there was redemption for Wolf, the opportunity was there, and it wasn't taken. He could have gotten rid of Hunter and Saylor and even Sophie's mom and just didn't do it. It made him seem so weak and Sophie just stayed strong throughout the whole thing.

I wish we would have seen Wolf actually express kindness to Sophie because, even when he decided he liked her, he still treated her like crap.

Not my favorite chicklit :(

This had every opportunity to be an interesting and exciting grumpy/sunshine book and even though it was that trope, it failed in the interesting and exciting bit.

I'm sorry if this review seems harsh but it is my unfiltered opinion on the book.
I do want to say that I do think the author is a good author and that she is more than able to write a story. I like the cover on the book, it's cute. I think I just want to see more of the "love" between the two... I would have liked to have seen Wolf stand up for Sophie and show through his actions that he loved her.

I liked this story although it was difficult. It was entertaining. The characters were interesting. Sophie was definitely a people pleaser. Unfortunately for Sophie she was surrounded by people that only cared about themselves and what they could get. She was treated abominably. There were some good things such as Arnold the pig. Wolf was funny about Arnold. I liked how the story ended. I wish there was an epilogue. I recommend giving this book a chance.

Good

I would have given this book more stars because Alina writes great books. But this one had way too many bad people in it. I mean her mother who belittled her, a woman who wanted to marry him, a half sister who was such a b#%&h and a estranged father who was manipulating her. Talk about overkill. The H was understandable since he thought she was like her father. But it would have been better without so many villains.

such a letdown

I usually love Alina’s books, I have read the majority of them and was really excited for this new one but it was such a letdown! It missed it’s usual spark between the main characters , the banter and the fun! The instant love developed too fast between the main pair and their interactions were boring to say the least! All in all I would not recommend !

Well-Written Soft-Core Porn Disguised As Romance

I’ve read four of Alina Jacobs’s Weddings in the City novels, so I thought I knew what I was getting into. But when I feel like hiding my own eyes and covering my ears, I think things have gone too far!

Pastries and Proposals focuses on wedding cake baker Sophie, who also handles all catering of baked goods such as quiches and puffs. She and Elsie, the caterer, are the remaining single members of the Weddings in the City cooperative that specializes in creating excellent weddings for high-end clients. She attempts to deliver a retro cake to a family reunion, only to find that it’s a wedding and the bride called it a reunion to avoid paying the wedding premium. Sophie, who was adopted, recognizes the bride as her biological half-sister and is thrilled by the tender reception she receives from her father. He asks only one thing from her: that she marry the groom whose wedding she “ruined” with what her half-sister called a “murdered Muppet cake”. The groom in question, billionaire Wolfram van de Berg, is handsome, grumpy—and opposed to marrying the dumpy, cake-addicted Sophie due to an old family feud. Long story short, the marriage must last for two months before Sophie’s father gets a significant share of the de Berg family fortune based on a contract from 150 years ago. Wolf’s lawyer, a Svensson brother, begins working on an annulment, but both of them start to doubt their intention to end their marriage of convenience…

The novel progresses as expected in an enemies-to-lovers framework, albeit with a pet pig assistant and a chihuahua wedding for comic relief. So far, it’s a five-star novel.

Then comes the obligatory hookup between the insecure bride and the reluctant groom, who originally had forbidden Sophie to touch anything in his condo and only relented when, as an insurance executive, he fears that her jerry-rigged hot plate and personal laundry draped across his living room near her tent would cause water damage to his condo or even burn it down. Before long, she has access to his fridge and freezer plus a bathroom with a shower. Eventually, she gets a bedroom of her own.

The hookup is what costs Pastries and Proposals two stars. I have a filter for profanity and some explicit content, but Sophie and Wolf get into some stuff that I can’t visualize or imagine, especially for a woman who works with food for a living! The fact that she invites it doesn’t sit well with me.

I’m also not fond of the depiction of her adoptive mother as a vulgar cougar who writes tell-all memoirs of her sexual adventures and stole Sophie’s college boyfriend (and brags that he told her she was better in bed than Sophie). With that kind of example, why would Sophie’s “uncommon”sexual appetites be a surprise?

I hesitate to criticize the book because there’s nothing wrong with the writing or pacing of the plot. But a boss of mine who walked out of a movie said, “Well-done trash is still trash.” I agree.

Recommended with reservations—if you’re able to stomach coarse language and deviant sexual practices, this is a great book! If not, be prepared for some uncomfortable moments.

Sophie is the baker with Weddings in the City and makes beautiful cakes etc. A family reunion. What? It's really a wedding? The cake Sophie baked is not suitable for a wedding. And surprise surprise. The bride is her half sister. Sophie is covered in cake and finally gets to meet her birth father. But there is a catch. He wants her to get close to billionaire Wolf. There is a third of Wolf's fortune that her father says is owed to him via a contract. You must marry this man. What? This horrible person? Oh dear. What a disaster. A gorgeous billionaire but a real grouch. Moving in with an awful husband. Plus her pet pig called Arnold. A pig in a penthouse apartment. That means trouble. Not allowed to use one of the bedrooms to sleep. A tent in the loungeroom. No using the kitchen. What? Catering an exclusive dinner party. Don't stuff it up! Screaming bridezillas. Return of a horrid mother. Tries to steal a husband. Wedding cakes. Hot times with a husband. Doggie wedding. A contract in trouble. OMG this was a fantastic story. If this author wrote a story on toilet paper I would read it. She is just so good.

Cake

XXX! Adult content, reader discretion advised. I wonder how valid a contract would be from Victorian England times regarding a marriage gifting thirty percent of the grooms company to the brides father? Furthermore, corporate restructuring would have protected the company. Additionally, since Sophie’s birth father was not her legal father and didn’t adopt her before coercing Sophie into marriage the contract was not met. Then it was never clear on what would happen if Wolf refused to marry an Aster daughter who chose him? Why couldn’t he just say no? Sophie had crap luck with parents. Her biological mother didn’t want her at worst or couldn’t keep her at best. He biological father just wanted to use her. Her stepmother wanted her as far away from her family as possible. Her adoptive mother only wanted what she could take from Sophie, including boyfriends and husbands. Seriously, the worst. Wolf had just as bad luck. His parents had died in a tragic accident. They could no longer cause drama. Sophie’s parents caused enough drama for the lot. Saylor was a real peach. Luckily, Sophie had good friends and Wolf had cutthroat lawyer.

Terribly witty 3.5*
Like all of Alina’s books, her intelligent, easy-flowing writing style comes through in this book also and is a credit to her ability as a writer. I must say, in as much as I am a fan of her talents, I haven’t seen such a large group of nasty, petty and cruel people as she’s amassed in this novel. Seeing that they are from the upper echelons of New York, one would think that a little bit of education, culture, manners and decorum would at least on occasions be practised. Wolf is a cruel, unlikeable character and Sophie, bless her naïve heart, wanting to please everybody, is a total push-over. She really is no match for the unscrupulous people around her, even her own biological father wanting to use her for his own less-then noble reasons. I think only Alina could make a readable story out of such a framework of flawed characters. Nevertheless, the book is an entertaining, witty offering that many readers will enjoy.

This is the fifth book in this series. It features baker extraordinaire Sophie. She finally meets her biological father. And he is definitely in the upper class. Unfortunately his family has a claim on his billion dollar insurance company. But to get it he has to have a daughter marry the current Scion. And they only have three months left to complete this 150 year old contract. So he convinces Sophie to marry this complete stranger the next day. And what a winner he is….not. Wolf may be rich, handsome and hot but he is a grump who never eats sweets and hates weddings. Especially one where he loses 30% of his company. And so the fun begins. There are so many times Sophie is covered in cake. And the longer they are together a spark starts to grow. Add in a 700 pound pet hog and a cast of crazy characters and you get a hilarious, steamy romance. I love Alina Jacobs stories because she always has a Happily Ever After. I did receive an advance copy for my honest review.

I am so excited to see the girls again! Weddings in the City is the series that first introduced me to Alina Jacobs as an author. Ivy and Evan's story reeled me in and I never looked back.

This is Sophie's story. Sophie is the wedding cake baker for their firm, she also owns a cafe, and helps Elise with catering. (Elise is our last single girl!!!)

Sophie is probably the most submissive and emotional out of all the women so far. She's a people pleaser who grew up with a toxic mother which has resulted in her latching on to any type of positive attention. With that said she can still get feisty when needed.

Wolf is forced to marry Sophie due to a business/family contract. His hope is to be the worst husband ever so that she will file for divorce. So, he starts off as a douche but don't worry, he has some serious personal growth with the positive influence of his new step pig...

I found Sophie and Wolf's interactions very enjoyable and spicy. I was very excited that we get to see/hear more about the Richmond Brothers.. YES I am literally chomping at the bit waiting for their spin off series to be announced. There is also a bit of cross over with the Svennsons.

Sadly, this book reminded me of one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to Alina's writing. Everyone once in a while we will be presented with a mean girl who says and/or does hurtful things, and NO ONE checks them. I have noticed it's only in THIS series as the Holbrooks and Svennsons are more ruthless and the Frosts can verbally cut a person.

Maybe this is an indication of how high society/old money differs from our self made, first generation billionaires. *shrugs* It's a working theory.

Anyways, I truly enjoy Alina's writing. I highly recommend reading any of her books. This one was very entertaining.

Pastries and Proposals: A Hot Romantic Comedy (Weddings in the City Book 5) by Alina Jacobs. I am a huge fan of Alina Jacobs- I will grab anything she is offering because I know I will love it. This story was no exception. Sophie had my heart from the get go, great character with a heart of gold trying to find the love she so deserves. Wolf may come across as the bad guy, but they all have a back story that makes you quickly realize the reasons. These two made a great match and had me routing for the HEA which seemed way out of reach. I could have done without the manipulation (this just made me love Sophie even more) but all the rest was fantastic. Crazy antics, action packed drama, intense chemistry, fun and quirky characters, and sweet HEA. I enjoyed this story and look forward to more from this talented author.

Sophie is quickly wondering if marriage to Wolf is worth it, even if it's just for a few months. The man has made it abundantly clear that he hates the idea of marriage to her. Wolf can't believe he was put in this position by an ancestor, he's being forced into a marriage he doesn't want, but he's determined to do anything necessary to make Sophie want to walk away.
Laugh-out-loud funny romantic comedy with some steam, a happily ever after, and some hysterical twists in the plot. I loved these characters, especially Arnold. They're all well written, and made me laugh until I was nearly crying. This is definitely a must read, and I highly recommend it.

RomCom at its best!
Wolf and Sofie were protagonists who carried the theme of Enemies to Lovers perfectly. Their supporting cast, including Arnold, were delightful in their own right, especially the ladies who ran Weddings in the City. They are the stars of this series and it’s always fun when they get together. Their conversations are priceless. The man for Sofie, who is the Baker, is Wolf, a billionaire Insurance CEO. They are forced to marry and the shenanigans that ensues as a result constitutes the storyline. As all the books in the series, this too ends happily.
I’m absolutely recommending this book (and series) for your reading enjoyment and pleasure. PEACE.

Oh my goodness, this book was amazing! It was enemies to lovers and forced proximity which are two of my favorite tropes! The angst was everything! I loved the banter between Wolf and Sophie! I felt bad for Sophie having such awful parents! They were terrible! But I loved her group of friends that were her support system. I ended up falling in love with Wolf despite his grumpy attitude. And Sophie was a strong FMC and stood up for herself.

This book had the best angst ever! It also had drama, secrets, friendship, and spice. This was my first book by this author and definitely won’t be my last! I absolutely loved this book and am looking forward to reading more from her!

Sophie and Wolf’s story is so over the top that I couldn’t put it down. Sophie has so much going right in her business, yet so much going wrong in her life. She is a people pleaser and that gets her married to an alpha hole trying to please her father and win a 150-year bet. But Wolf has soft spots for Sophie that he is in denial over. Their enemies to lovers romance is full of wacky situations with a pet pig, bridezillas, and horrible family members. Their HEA was so satisfying! I can’t wait for the next book by Alina Jacobs!.

Wow…I feel bad

How was this poor girl not suicidal? She’s surrounded by the most horrible people. Her Mother is the worst. I’d say her friends are her best support but all they care about is if she slept with him yet. I don’t know if I’ve ever read a comedy romance where someone is so mistreated. And Wolf, he doesn’t even support her at the “family dinner” with her mother showing up. I guess he’d walk past a dog getting kicked. He lacks basic human decency. What’s to love, here? The comedic scenes are funny. I’m about 70% thru the story and stopped to write the review because I feel so bad for her. I know there will be a “happy” ending.

Arnold snuffles and is hilarious

Arnold the hog/pig steal the story. A pig who is house trained and still gets in the way just bring so much humor to the story. I like how Wolf takes care of Arnold and bonds to him. So funny when Arnold hops on her bed and there is no room for wolf! Also when Arnold crashes in Wolf's room every morning because he doesn't want to be alone. I love that his Aunt loves Sophie. The fact that Sophie always ends up covered in cake and icing is just the icing on the story. I really hate how her "mom" treats her and frankly the father needs a lesson in manners as does the rest of his family. Always a twist and this story is no exception.

Fun, quirky, crazy read.

This was definitely fun. So many awkward moments, witty banter, and quirky characters. I really loved Sophie’s sweetness, Wolf’s smoulder, and their slow building chemistry. Arnold, the pig, was gorgeous and Wolf’s aunt was a breath of fresh air. Thank goodness for Sophie’s friends/business partners, who helped offset the mean characters Sophie encounters throughout the book.

Wow, Pastries and Proposals is another great jem by Alina Jacobs.

This time it is Sophia the wedding bakers turn to be in an arranged marriage with billionare socialite Wolfram.

This story had my heart aching for Sophie with her family issues and routing for her and wolf as the two of them came to realize that thier arranged marriage to each other was what they really needed in the grand scheme of things.

I received an ARC from the author and am voluntarily leaving my review. This book had me laughing out loud at times and at others I was just speechless. Sofie has to struggle, compromise and deal with a lot of demanding people. She gets stuck in a situation but then again so does Wolf. He wasn't easy to like at first but that changed. For a while most everything seemed against Sophie. It was a crazy love story.

What was the worst day of my life ever? Today. My wedding day.
Not because I married a man I’d never met but because my husband, Wolf Van de Berg, hates my freaking guts—and the feeling is mutual.

What a great read! Sophie's business life is going great, her love life, not so much. Enter Wolf, the handsome, yet arrogant, man who's trying to please her father and win a decades long bet. Following these two on their journey to HEA and go from enemies to lovers is an enjoyable, and entertaining read.

The plot on this one is just so convoluted I don't understand the baseline premise to how they get together and why. Marriage of convenience does not need to be THIS complicated. Not to mention the total disconnect between the chapter where the terrible mother (again with this—there is not one good mother in any of her books) shows up and humiliates the heroine...and then in the chapter right after, the hero & heroine just hook up without any hesitation or consideration for the heroine's feelings. This is sloppy storytelling.

I went into this story completely blind, and quickly found myself immersed in the intricate plot. The two protagonists Sophie and Wolf are full of inner strength, and the suspicion, angst, and turmoil that built as the story unfolded kept me reading. I loved it! I’m so glad I took the chance and read this book, will be reading the other books of the series!.

The story of Wolf and Sophie. She agrees to marry him to keep her estranged father happy. Wolf does not want to be married and wants to get out of the arrangement, but what will happen when they start to fall for each other? A great read, told from both points of view. Looking forward to the rest of this series.

charming story likable main characters

The old Victorian contract is a weird concept. The reality of such a contract still being enforceable seems unrealistic and there were certainly other ways to tell this story, but the relationship between the MC was truly growing on me as I read. I have also read all the previous stories so I had a back history with many of the secondary characters. A good story it is helpful to read prior stories first but you can read as a read alone.
