What's in this book?
The first in a planned series, this book originated from a collection of articles written by dementia expert Teepa Snow. Topic areas have been organized in a cohesive way to help the reader gain a better understanding of dementia and provide a philosophy that re-energizes care.
Who is this for?
It’s difficult these days to find someone who has not been touched by dementia. This book will be valued by anyone who wants to learn individuals with a diagnosis, family members, professionals, or those who are simply curious and want to be better-informed.
What will I learn?
In this book, you will find answers to the following
How to know if it’s dementia or something else. How to tame your reactions and manage your frustration. What you need to know about dementia that you likely don't know yet.Which changes to expect and how to best deal with them.
Teepa's approach to Dementia Care is none like any other. She always great tid-bit and good insights for those living with dementia or care givers. This copy is on my book shelf
Really straightforward and compassionate description of what happens to the brain with dementia. This was one of the first books I read after my mom’s diagnosis. Actually I got her a copy too and we read it at the same time. It had enough medical explanation to please her nursing background but was told in a way that she could process it with her aging brain. It helped her begin to accept her new reality.
Teepa Snow is an expert in dealing with People Living With Dementia. She consistently applies the capitalization I have shown when writing that phrase. Her intent with that, it seems to me, is to demonstrate that, People Living With Dementia are as important as the President of the Corporation or the Head of the Family, or the Expert on ... whatever area you are discussimng. Snow's intention with this book is to help those dealing with loved ones suffering directly the effects of their dementia find ways to understand better what is happening and, thereby, gain ideas and skills to better help support those loved ones with the dignity, gentility, and grace you want them to feel.
It is a dense book, though fairly short. I took a long time to read it as there were so many ideas I wanted to absorb and understand. I often stopped reading and spent some time just thinking about what I had read. I live with a Person Living With Dementia so I wanted to think about tactics for issues I face now and to internalize a bit for things that may come down the line. I also recently moved into a facility where many of the residents suffer with various levels of dementia so knowing more about the different presentations of dementia allows me to treat those Neighbors Living With Dementia with more grace and seeing them with eyes that recognize their dignity.
It was a bit of a disappointment very basic. I was hoping for a little bit more from Teepa. A little bit more in-depth, and a little bit more of the tips and tricks that she usually tells in the videos. I didn’t feel like I learned much of anything. I guess I had higher hopes for the book, but it was just very basic
Wow! I just LOVE Teepa Snow! She is truly the pioneer in all things Dementa. From having a clear understanding of the disease, to truly understanding how to care for someone living with it. Teepa is amazing! This is a MUST READ!
