‘Peter's English Grammar’ which is a Complete Version of English Grammar , including Rhetoric & Prosody, is designed mainly for high school students. Almost each and every point of English grammar has been discussed here step by step, from abc to z. The topics are arranged from primary level to secondary, from words, parts of Speech to analysis of a sentence, joining and split-up, ascending as stairs to go up; and two more chapters, covering Rhetoric (Figures of Speech which includes simile, metaphor, oxymoron, personification, alliteration, pun, hyperbole, etc.) & Prosody, (the Grammar of Verse, which includes rhyme, meter, foot of a poetic line).
The book shows how case of Nouns define the different functions of Nouns. Without study the functions of Nouns, we hardly can identify the role of Nouns in a sentence. It is shown elaborately, how Nouns form Subjects, Objects, Phrase in apposition, Complements; and when and how they work like an adjective, and form Nominal Compounds, or Prepositional Objects, and be a part of an Adverbial phrase. Each and every topic related Nouns, like, number, gender, case, functions of nouns; role and classification of Pronouns and Adjectives have been illustrated in the book in details. It illustrates the use of Adjectives, attributively, predicatively; as premodifiers or post modifiers, where they are same and where they are different from each other. Besides, the formation of degree, position and proper arrangement of adjectives (when more adjectives are used at a time side by side) are carefully illustrated in the book. Which are determiners have been included along with the use of articles (a, an, the) too, in the book.
The book includes fifteen major chapters merely on verbs, covering definitions, functions along with a lot of examples. It has included Finite, Non-finite, State, Event, Principal and Auxiliaries, Transitive and Intransitive, and of different objects- Direct & Indirect, Cognate, Reflexive, Retained, Prepositional Objects, Complements and also Adverbials.
As essential part of verb, verb conjugation, tense, voice-change have been discussed and shown different types of Questions, (yes-no type, wh-, alternative, tag, rhetorical, short & the indirect). Forming negative sentences with words of negation and helping verbs, detail study of Adverbs, Prepositions, Conjunctions & Interjections —have also been included and elaborated with examples and explanation. It shows how different Interjections express different emotions and feelings of speakers.
The rules of Narration Change, Narration change of Assertive, Interrogative, Imperative, Optative & Exclamatory sentences have been included, besides giving a place to conversion of sentences & words, forming new words (i.e., words-building). The book deals in details of the use of Punctuations too, including the use of capital letters, use of bracket, asterisk, dot-dot-dot, oblique and parenthesis, etc. The conjugation of verb, i.e., the subject-verb agreement has also taken a part of it which is very important for any competitive examination.
The book deals in details of Phrases, Clauses and the structure of Sentences. It has shown their kinds, definitions and functions, discussed in simple and lucid language. It shows how to find out clauses from a sentence. It deals with seven kinds of phrases, three major kinds of clauses and their sub-divisions, and classification of sentences in two ways—functional and structural. The book contains also a list of some idioms & phrasal verbs in the section of phrases. The chapter of Mood shows relation of the 1st class of classification of sentences which is based on function; while different clauses form sentences, simple, compound or complex.
