Second strangler

I am debating on this book as a three or four. I really did like it and the characters too. They were very different. Bridget Bishop is a young profiler who cut her teeth on a serial killer who she worked with to try and find out why he was the way he was. He was so evil but he liked her and even asked her to come to his execution. He left his brain to her so she could see what made him this way. It was damaged from abuse done to him by his Father. she was specializing in that type of research. Showing a connection between brain damage and psychotic behavior. It was very good and I can't wait for the next installment. There's a possible love interest too. I like that. but the bad guy in this was just a surprise and maybe even a little letdown. I expected something more sinister I guess. I mean it was bad enough but just missed the mark for me. And it was a surprise.

Great start to a brand new series. I enjoyed this suspenseful thriller a lot. I have read several books by this author and each one seems to get better. I enjoyed the characters in the book, and I thought I knew who the killer was but I was wrong. I certainly would recommend this book to others.

After finishing the past three series that Melinda Woodhall has written, I was excited for a new set of characters and also to see how she would bring past characters to this series as that is what I have found her known for, crossing characters over her multiple series. In the Bridget Bishop FBI series, we first meet Bridget who is working as a psychologist after experiencing a bit of a breakdown while working as a profiler at the BAU. Bridget is an empath so her emotions get the better of her when dealing with serial killers. Meanwhile, it looks like she is needed back at the FBI as a new serial killer is using the same MO as the Shenandoah Strangler - someone who has now been executed as Bridget watched him die, he requested that she be the only one present as the two had formed a strange bond and her father Bob Bishop was the one to catch him. Another girl has gone missing and the FBI is at a loss, as we read Bridget is being pulled back into a world, she tried so hard to escape. The crossover characters as I mentioned earlier in this series were the lovely Agent Charlie Day and Agent Tristan Hale -the FBI agents we have read often as they featured quite prominently in the Willow Bay series of Veronica Lee. Lessons in Evil can be read as a standalone, like the rest of Melinda's series and I am looking forward to reading and seeing the direction that Melinda takes the Bridget Bishop series. Fans of thriller writers like Kendra Elliot, Melinda Leigh, and Kate Watterson will love Melinda Woodhall's suspense law enforcement reads.

A book I read through the sleepless night that I had to stay with to the end. I don't think I want to read another book like this during night hours! It has a heavy dose of threat towards the safety of the young FBI agent Bridget. The focus is on brutal murders by a serial killer and the action taut, keeping reader on edge. Maybe read it in the daylight, eh?

Book 1 in a new series - score! New author for me, just what I need, more in my TBR pile. Bridget is, was an FBI Profiler who steps away due to the last traumatic case. She is called back to assist as there seems to be a second killer, following in the same foot steps. First I have never read a book with so many point of views, and yay, I was not lost. I immediately knew who I was at any point and time. This was creepy, twisty, red herrings - I was wrong on who I thought it was fast paced police procedural and more. I did have an issue with one character cheating. You can feel the self recriminations and I imagine he will be a continuing character that we will see more of and understand the whys, not the excuses. I am an avid Melinda Leigh, Kendra Elliot, Mary Burton, Toni Anderson, D.K. Hood reader and now I must add Melinda Woodhall. Thank you Booksirens for the arc! I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions.

I was given the opportunity to read this great mystery thriller and I totally enjoyed it. Woodhall has a way of bring real life happens to a page for a new spinning tale. I was captivated right from page one until the end and still wanted more. I became wrapped up within the story unraveling around me and didn't want it to finish. The characters are completely believable and you feel the same things each character does just like you would if it was going on right beside you in real life. You feel their despair, loneliness, and sense of wanting to fit somewhere. I had plenty of moments where I thought I figured out the who done it but.....you'll have to read to find out for yourself. This was an easy 4 1/2 star and I am looking forward to book 2.

I received an ARC of this tale on BookSirens and this is my unbiased review.

A Bridget Bishop FBI Mystery book #1

This is a riveting start to a new series Ms. Woodhall has penned for us. In her first book she introduces a charismatic group of players especially a strong lead character in Bridget Bishop. The plot line is exciting filled with suspense and tension. “Lessons in Evil” is a fast-paced story that only can keep the reader glued from the opening page till the last page is reached. We have so many twists and turns to keep us guessing and intrigued. What is not to love from this stellar read? Well-done, well-said, well-executed and well played out.

“Lesson in Evil” brings Bridget back to her dark beginning as a FBI profiler in a case involving a serial killer who eventually was convicted and executed. Bridget was his psychologist at the prison and required her to be a witness in his execution. When a copycat surfaced, the FBI set their eyes on Bridget’s experiences. While grappling with her past Bridget sets off on a mission to stop the evil man plans before he sends another victim to the grave. And the drama begins....

Of course, the story is by far more intense than the above summary and covers much more. IMO spoilers do not make great reviews.

I received a free copy of this book and I leave a voluntary review, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

A new author for me and this is book one of a new series, Bridget Bishop FBI Mystery Thriller, featuring criminal psychologist Bridget Bishop. The characters are well thought out. Bridget is a strong protagonist and I loved that her best friend was her dog Hank.

Briefly, having left the FBI Behavioural Analyst Unit, mentally exhausted after a difficult case where she had to witness the execution of the murderer, Bridget is now working for a new company. However, she is forced back into her old world when a new serial killer starts a killing spree using the same methods as the executed killer. What is the connection and what can Bridget do to help stop the latest killings?

This is an intriguing read as there are a number of strands which run alongside each other and the conclusion is nowhere near as obvious as I first thought. Fast paced with plenty of twists and turns and I’ll look forward to seeing how the characters develop in the book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The past returns to haunt you!

Ghosts, nightmares kidnappings and murdered women have Bridget questioning a past case and everything she thought she knew. She is battling self doubt, local politics and the judgment of others but her priority stays the same.....find the women before any more lives are lost. This is a gripping new series which I read on Kindle Unlimited.

Melinda Woodhall is one of my favourite thriller writers and this gripping new series certainly doesn't disappoint.
How could this be happening, she had watched the serial killers execution at his insistence, all the clues pointed in his direction, he was still haunting her from the grave.
Bridget Bishop was a criminal psychologist working for the prestigious FBIs Behavioural Analysis Unit until it began to affect her health, she had been forced to leave to hang on to her sanity, she was spent, traumatised, she had given all she had leaving her needing therapy.
Bridget's thesis for her dissertation had been to study a notorious, evil serial killer who her father had put behind bars, she wanted to get inside his mind before his execution..........but did he get into hers ?
When one girl was found dead and another had disappeared, the BAU were dumfounded, the MO was exactly the same as the dead serial killer, they desperately needed Bridget on the team, she knew more about the killer than anyone, was it a copycat killing or something much more sinister, time was running out, they had to find the missing girl, little did Bridger know at this point but her life was also in grave danger. Who was this killer ?Why did the DNA point to a dead man ?
This story has everything, it is action packed, it has edge of your seat suspense, it twists and turns in every direction and comes to dead ends, red herrings are thrown out but the killer isn't revealed until the very end.
What a fabulous gripping start to a new series and how lovely to meet up again with some of the lovely characters from the author's previous series.

A copycat killer

A chilling case that hits close to home for Bridget. Way back when she was finishing up her studies to become a doctor of psychology she interviewed a serial killer that her father had caught. She wanted to know why he did what he did, what caused him to go down that path. Many years later after a stint with the BAU and now in private practice Bridget is brought into a cause when someone starts killing again in the exact same way of the man long dead who was the focus of her thesis. Putting aside bad dreams and fears Bridget agrees to help find this new man before he can terrorize like his predecessor.
Chilling is a very apt descriptor for this book. I’ve read a few of the later books in the series I was very excited to see how it all started. I was not disappointed in the least. Heart pounding, mind boggling, gritty thriller/mystery case. I love the details that the author brings in, not just the police procedure but the perspectives of not only our heroine Bridget but our killer as well. You get both sides of the story playing out in real time. It’s exciting, scary, and fabulous going on the adventure. A series I highly recommend for all thriller, police procedural and mystery fans!

I always enjoy reading this authors work but this book has to be one of my favorites from her. I love the way different characters crossover from series to series by the writer so, as is the case in this book, there is continuity across her work but also fresh characters to get to know.

The protagonist in this book is a behavioral analyst who has been inside the brain of a serial killer, literally. The storyline was engaging and well written. There was both tension within the story from the psychological suspense as well as some mild romantic tension. A great read that should be savored.

I received an arc of this book and voluntarily provided a review.

Good start

This seems like the start of another good series. There are quite a few characters introduced in this book that seem to take a pivotal role so it will take time to get to know them. Look forward to future books, but knowing Ms. Woodhall's track record of interesting female dominated stories I foresee another hit.

This is a wonderful introduction to a new a nuanced and compelling new heroine. Criminal psychologist Bridget Bishop is ready to move on from her position at the BAU. Her work has left her burnt out as the unit endeavoured to catch a depraved killer. When the Bureau seeks her skills, she is ensnared in a case that has the hallmarks of previous crimes. This is a wonderful introduction to a nuanced and engaging new heroine. The story has supporting characters that give colour and depth to this compelling story that is filled with twist and turns.

I started this series by reading the third book and it was fantastic! I found this book-the first book in the series-to be just as compelling with its cast of characters and the sinister serial killer plot they all orbit around.

What I enjoy most about this series is the main cast of characters, their interactions, and personal stories. The author gives us everyone's point of view (including the unsub), and we get to dive into what makes everyone tick.

With that said, the cast of characters are the prominent interest in this series and the crime plot seemed to get a little lost in establishing all of the characters and the who's who that needs to happen in the first book of a series.

Fortunately, I am someone who enjoys character-driven novels which makes this series perfect for my enjoyment. If you similarly enjoy a cast of characters, crime-solving, suspense, and a police procedural, then I would recommend giving any book in the series a try; while there are overarching subplots involving the characters' lives, each case stands on its own.

3.75✨’s

Thank you to the author via BookSirens for allowing me to respond to this book with my honest opinions.

This was a great new series from this author - with touches of other characters from previous stories. Really devoured it and it was enjoyable. It was really good to have the same writing style but set in a completely different part of the US and different back stories, it is like starting all over again.

Cant wait for more in the series

Lessons in Evil is the first book in the new series based on Bridget Bishop. I am a fan of Melinda Woodhall’s books and I already knew that I would be sucked into the suspenseful investigation in this book. It has been awhile since I last read a book by the author so my memory of where we first Bridget were a little foggy. The last I remember reading about her was in Her Darkest Night where she was one of the psychologist who spoke with Skylar at Belmore. Her role in that book was small. I don’t remember seeing her in any other books since then, but she might have been and I just don’t remember.

This book is everything you would expect out of a Melinda Woodhall thriller and having the point of view from Bridget Bishop, who is a psychologist, was very interesting to read. In the previous series by the author, we have read from the POV from a reporter, detective, victim, and little bits and pieces from other characters in the series, but haven’t had much on the inside of the psychologist. Even though, it doesn’t go into too deep in her thoughts, it was refreshing to read about what she thinks about when profiling or looking into a case. While working on a local case for the Commonwealth’s Attorney in Wisteria Falls, she is asked to consult on a case with her old boss and several other colleagues of hers. This case is tied to a case that she worked on before she left the Bureau and one that still haunts her to this day.

The crime committed and all that entails in finding the perpetrators always blows my mind at how twisted and utterly fascinating that the author can create a world and a crime that will make you second guess yourself when you think you know who the killer is. Totally didn’t see who the killer was until it was revealed and once it was, it all made sense.

I love crossover books and I was happy to meet new characters and see that there were a few friendly faces in this book. It is always nice to see Special Agents Charlie Day and Tristan Hale as well as Deputy Marshall Santino.

Can’t wait for the next book in the series and to see what case falls into Bridget’s lap and see how things progress between her and her potential beau.

Highly recommend this book and this series to anyone who loves a good thriller to get lost in!

Lessons in Evil (Bridget Bishop FBI, #1) by Melinda Woodhall

Lessons in Evil: Bridget Bishop Book 1

I was given this advanced copy in exchange for an honest review

Wow.

I really loved this book. It was engaging from the very first page, and I read it quicker than I expected to.

This story is about the Second Strangler. A copycat serial killer whose destiny is to follow in his mentor's footsteps after a 'devil woman' sent the original strangler to the executioner. Dr Bridget Bishop is called in to assist the FBI with the new case because of her expertise in behaviour analysis and her intimate knowledge of the original strangler of Wisteria Falls. Will they uncover the truth and find out who the real killer is? Is Bridget safe?

The writing style is easy to read and get into. It is difficult to put the book down. It just leaves you guessing and wanting to know more.
The character development was perfect, I feel like I got to know each character enough to know what they are really like, and I found myself rooting for a relationship! There are a few clever themes running through it which I liked and only spotted after reading when I thought about it all; like the voices in people’s heads.
I like how you were led to think one thing then having the rug pulled from under you, like the author is saying, Ha! Didn't expect that, did ya?! Which, again, was great.
I really enjoyed getting to know Bridget and her relationship with a deadly serial killer.
It reminded me of all the times I would watch shows like CSI and Law and Order – ah, the good ol’ days!
There were plenty of tense moments, thrill and mystery, I found myself guessing what would happen next and being happy when I guessed it right, then I shouted at it when near the end I had no idea THAT was going to happen! It wasn't the only time I shouted at this book! There were times when I thought, no way! Did you really do that, Melinda? You let that happen?!
Every moment of this book was enjoyable and tense and enigmatic and that's what I loved about it!
Honestly. If you like thriller, suspense, murder mystery, whodunnit? and like to have a bit of fun - this is for you!

I CANNOT WAIT to read more in this series!!

Melinda Woodhall is the author of the new Veronica Lee Thriller series, as well as the page-turning Mercy Harbor Thriller series. In addition to writing romantic thrillers and police procedurals, Melinda also writes women’s contemporary fiction as M.M. Arvin.

“I’ve got a little surprise in the works.”

Former BAU agent Bridget Bishop is enjoying her life in private practice. The peace outside the bureau is nice, and she had more time to care for her father. When an apparent copycat killer emerges, the FBI knows only one person can provide the insight necessary to stop the killer; the challenge is hoping Bridget can figure out who the copycat is before she becomes the next victim.

I enjoyed this introduction to the Bridget Bishop series. I think Bridget will be a great leading lady, and I am looking forward to following her journey.

I liked the characters in this book. Bridget is intelligent, curious, capable, and intuitive. The characters all had chemistry, and the relationships felt genuine.

The pacing of the storyline was quick. And I liked how the side plot was enough to add a kick to the overall storyline without completely derailing the narrative.

I am looking forward to continuing to get to know Bridget and seeing where this series will take us. Melina is known for writing strong female characters, so no matter what happens, Bridget will handle whatever happens.

I received an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

This story introduces Bridget Bishop, a former FBI member, who is requested by the FBI to consult on a case similar to one which happened 20 years earlier. This case has the same MO as that one did. The case involves a serial killer abducting girls and killing them after a short period. The action even happens in the same area that this one did. The reason Bridget is asked is because she spent a lot of time interviewing the 1st serial killer.

Two girls have been abducted and the body of the 1st one shows up. The FBI has established a task force to catch this guy. The individual is one that leaves little evidence and the only way that they have tied it back to the 1st one is the tape that is used to tie the victims. Soon the killer hits home to Bridget with his latest abduction. A member of the team, Santino a U.S. Marshall, has tracked down the 1st killer's son and questioned him. In addition a woman, who had escaped the 1st killer, was sequestered in a "safe house" and left to confront who she the new killer was. This action led the team back to the killer's father's farm. While this was going on, another individual was abducted.

To learn who the killer was, what Bridget was involved with before getting involved with the FBI again and what abduction brought the task force to be concerned about Bridget, then you need to read this book.

I love anything that Melinda Woodhall writes, and this book was no exception. This is a new series introducing you to Bridget Bishop. She is a former profiler with the FBI's BAU. She left the FBI, and she is now in private practice due to wear and tear on her mind and body working with a prolific serial killer while he was imprisoned awaiting execution. The FBI has asked for her assistance again because there is a depraved killer on the loose in Wisteria Falls again. Melinda Woodhall is a master storyteller. She can weave a tangled web of lies and deceit taking you down a rabbit hole where you will believe you have it all figured out, only to learn you were sadly mistaken! I think I am going to enjoy the line up of characters in this new series. Most of the characters are very likeable, although a couple of them got on my nerves, but I guess that is what makes it a good book. You can't like them all! You need at least one narcissist in these types of books! If you like a good chase and a great mystery involving the race to catch a serial killer, you will not be disappointed! You may need to sleep with lights on because this story will set your teeth on edge as you are carried into the mind of a very disturbed individual! Melinda Woodhall has written another best seller and the start of another great series! I highly recommend this book for lovers of thrillers!

This is the first novel in a new series (new to me) and it so empowering. I am a clinical psychologist so when I find a novel a long these lines I just can't help myself but jump in. This is the first novel in the series and I have already gotten the next two that is how well I like the novel. Now because of my training I can tend to be a little super critical and when something seems totally off kilter or false, that's it I slam the book, and I am done with it, But not so with our young protagonist Bridget Bishop. I felt that the author represented the trauma caused by our protagonist work accurately and in a most readable manner. No high techie terms, but what life was really like for her as a criminal psychologist. After two years and an intense investigation following one of the nation's most prolific serial killers. Bridget resign her psyche just can not handle any more. But she is really good at what she does and the Bureau calls up once again - and the rest of this story you just have to read. This is my first ready by Melinda Woodhall and I was very impresses. Her writing skills are excellent. The plot line impeccable. The characters well fleshed out. As I said I already have the next two books and I can't wait to start reading. I received this novel from BookSirens. This is my true and honest review.

This was a quick and enjoyable read with a compelling mystery. I thought I had the killer figured out, but in the end, I was surprised.

However, I felt there were way too many POV characters for me to connect to any one. The first seven or so chapters are all from the perspectives of a different character, so you're 15-20% into the book before you ever see the main character again. I understand some of these characters are "crossover" characters, so maybe it would be different if this wasn't my first book by this author and I'd already met them and formed a connection with them. Perhaps they're all included so that existing fans can see how they're doing, but I found some of these threads (Terrance and Vivian, for example) to unnecessarily complicate the story and slow down the action.

I also found the way the author formats dialogue to be confusing. It's more of a journalistic style than a literary one, with dialogue set apart from everything else, including the speaking character's gestures, actions, etc. When used in place of actual "he said" and "she said" dialogue tags, they should really be set in the same paragraph as the dialogue itself so it's clear who is speaking. An easy fix that would go a long way to improving clarity.

If you enjoy mysteries you should read this one! From the the moment you start reading the first chapter until the last page, you'll not want to put the book down.

You'll meet some wonderful characters, one in particular of the name Bridget who has spent most of her life studying and trying to understand why a person becomes a serial killer. One may think they know what's going to happen with each of the characters because they work for the FBI, US Marshall,
Corners Office, or are family member, ex-cons, prisoners, and serial killers. Also, you may think you have figured out how the plot is going to fold out and will end.

Nope, things won't happen as you may expect. I was presently surprised! The book is unpredictable, realistic, informative, has twists and turns, lots of action, entertaining, easy to read and, oh ya, suggestions of romance.

I received a free copy of this book for an honest review. I would recommend this book to anybody who enjoys mysteries, murders, serial killers, crime fiction and thriller books. You need to know if you read this book, you will want to read the next two books in the series.

I had read this author’s books before and did think, that this first book in the new thriller series would be similar to the last series I had read but I was very wrong!

This book is about a serial killer who was given the death penalty quite a few years back and gets reintroduced in the plot when similar crimes start to occur. The main character, criminal psychologist Bridget Bishop, is asked to help on these new cases because she was highly involved in the previous serial killer's case and understood him. Wanting to prevent more deaths and not knowing who the killer presents as a large part of the plot. Interesting twists, good character development, a familiar name from a previous series, and an engaging storyline are what kept me reading the book until the end. Not at all boring other than what appeared to be a slow start. Once I got past the first few chapters I was hooked. These first few chapters were used to introduce some of the characters and the background of what would then become a page-turner. I highly recommend it. Lessons in Evil was my first book I've read by Melinda Woodhall. This is the first book in the series. I gave this book 4 stars, I liked the book. It held my interest until the last page.

Bridget Bishop is a profiler of serial killers. She was shaken by the last one she studied. The copycat killer is on the loose. She is determined to track him down so she won't be the next victim. Along the way, she learns people kept important facts from her. FBI calls her back to investigate. She has help from people on the task force. Including one handsome agent.

This book was slow at first but it picked up quickly. I was guessing the killer at each chapter and guessing wrong. This was a page turner. The clues, the background and the characters were all intertwined with each other that I was actually rooting for the good guys and getting mad at the bad ones. Bridget's character is a strong female lead. The other characters were very believable. I gave this 4 stars because I felt like some of the characters could have been left out. They didn't add to the story. Overall, this was a solid like for me. I will read more from this series. Thanks to Book Sirens for this ARC to read.

This is the first book in a new series and it seems to be another great series by this author. It also revolves around another strong female lead, this time Bridget Bishop. Bridget is a criminal psychologist who used to be a member of the FBI's Behavioural Analysis Unit. She was chosen by a serial killer as the person to talk to about his crimes and was also present at his death.

She is asked by the FBI to help in their investigation when it appears that a string of crimes is taking place which have the same MO as the executed serial killer.

As expected, this is a very strong storyline with well defined characters. Bridget is quite likeable but has her issues dealing with her past. There's enough twists here to keep you hooked and I am delighted it's the start of a new series. With such a strong start, the series looks very promising indeed.

Apparently, I was not as enthralled with this novel as most. There were some very good scenes. And the pacing was good. I also appreciated having tension without gore. Still, the plot seemed a bit familiar and pedestrian; a female PhD psychologist (Bridget Bishop) works with the FBI to hunt a serial killer using understanding and behavior patterns from a previous serial killer’s MO.

As a protagonist, Dr. Bishop is almost too good. She’s brilliant, dedicated, and loyal to family, friends and dogs with no discernable flaws or histories of bad decisions, a perfect person who didn’t seem real enough to draw my excitement.

There were a very high number of characters, each with a backstory and love story or sob story, not all of which contributed much to the plot and some of which seemed present only to allow for extending minor reveals to the very, very end.

The ending was just okay. I didn’t find it particularly satisfying. I didn’t have that feeling that I didn’t want the novel to end.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Good start to the series for the most part. There were parts that seemed hard to believe - Althea's keys are no confiscated and she is able to escape the house she is being protected in - and she does so she can attack him.
Harry Kemp turned to flee isn't he supposed to be the one that you hope saves the day -
The local PD not seeing the kidnapping of her neighbor as connected or even a big deal - why bother looking at evidence like blood, prints and tire tracks

Terrance Gage sank into the chair He’d been so focused on the Second Strangler task force, and so preoccupied with his imploding relationship with Vivian Burke, that he hadn’t had a chance to check his emails or voicemails for several days.” Did not like the character at all. No agent is not going to check his emails for several days and the whole thing with Vivian what a mess and his drinking - he would have been reprimanded.
The bad guy was a surprise and such a small character I will still read the 2nd one to see what unfolds
