The fifth installment in the bestselling Cassie Quinn mystery series from Wall Street Journal bestselling author L.T. Ryan & K.M. Rought. A gripping thriller with a touch of the paranormal that will keep you guessing until the last page.
When Cassie lands in Chicago, all she knows is that Detective Harris has a lead on what happened to David. But when they meet face to face, Cassie realizes her friend is grasping at straws, and the glimmer of hope she sees on the horizon fades fast. At every turn, it feels like Cassie’s life is crumbling around her.
Until, that is, she notices a mysterious shadow following her around the city. Cassie has never experienced a haunting quite like this, but if she can puzzle out its purpose, it might just lead to some real answers.
The truth isn’t always easy to bear, and Cassie soon discovers maybe she didn’t know David as well as she thought. And while she and the detective hunt down an assassin with ties back in Savannah, he’s patiently stalking them from the shadows.
A must-read for fans of Ghost Whisperer and Medium, Gregg Olsen, Angela Marsons, Robert Dugoni, Melinda Leigh, Kendra Elliot, and Mary Burton.

I may be biased because Cassie Quinn came to my city (and Evanston made an appearance because KM Rought loved me so much), but this was a breath of fresh air that the series needed. Past books were very focused on ghosts and what ghosts were trying to tell Cassie, the previous book especially. But here, Cassie gets to take a bit of a breather and stretch her observation and crime solving skills. Yes, her paranormal abilities still very much factor in, but it’s really nice to be able to see more of who she is outside of that. And more of who Harris is outside of a police officer.
Compared to the other books in the series, this one is probably the speediest read. But my only complaint about that is not being able to spend more time with Cassie in my city. Alas, it’s on to the next!
This Cassie Quinn series is well written with believable characters. The characters took me with them as they followed clues and solved their case . Definitely recommend!
Cassie and detective Harris team up again, this time in Chicago, in the 5th book in this series to unravel another layer in the mystery of their friend David's death. While there's plenty of action and suspense, there is not much psychic contribution by Cassie. There is, however, some violence not present in the other books. All in all, still a good read and well paced. I would rate this 4 of 5.
This book actually ended without a conclusion. You need to read the next to find out what happens. Not sure how I feel about this. Good thing I really enjoy the Cassie Quinn series! Next!
I kinda liked that I finally ( thought) got to read after waiting a year to find out about David and now I've got to wait another year?? This was kinda boring compared to all of your 5stars Cassie Quinn series. She barely used her abilities in this book which disappointed me. Then the action just got started and ended with a cliffhanger. I'm so sad. Sorry , big fan of Cassie
Life is Twisted With This One. Cassie Quinn is a tough character to completely wrap your head around. She seems fragile, haunted, and needy. All of that is true, in a sense. But she's tougher than she seems; probably even stronger than she realizes. She is haunted, both literally and figuratively, but that's an issue she deals with daily. As for being needy, well... she has had a tough life, and there are basic concepts that she seeks, such as security and justice. But she has no interest in playing the damsel in distress and relying on others.
Since the murder of her best friend and mentor, she's been on the hunt for answers. In this portion of the story, that takes her to Chicago in a bizarre twist. From there, let's just say things get curiouser and curiouser. But both Cassie and the recently disgraced, currently on leave Detective Harris follow clues through the seedy streets, alleys, and abandoned buildings of Chicago. They will do everything in their power to bring justice to their old friend and fellow detective.
Fans of the series will love this latest addition. If you haven't yet met Cassie et al, you can pick up the bulk of the story here. But for maximum impact, I would suggest starting at the beginning of the series. This will give you a better understanding of why a South Carolina detective and a psychic from Savannah would search so hard for answers. This is a great series for those who enjoy a touch of the paranormal with their suspense/thriller, mystery reads.
In this book, Cassie and Harris are trying to solve a puzzle, and figure out how David's murder ties in with everything. It had been awhile since I had read the previous book so it took me a little bit to get back into the story. I feel like this book focused a bit too much on being obsessed with trying to figure things out. I mean Harris puts Cassie's life in danger even though she knows she shouldn't. There were a couple other things that just didn't sit right with the characters persona, but I don't want to spoil anything. The story, overall, was interesting and I'm definitely going to read the next one. Hoping for some answers and to see where this is leading!
Story line focuses more on the detective vs the main character. This leaves it dry and boring. I skimmed multiple paragraphs just to get finished. I really hated that this happened. There was very little about Cassie Quinn and her abilities. This was all about the detective and she isn't interesting, or hasn't been made interesting by the author. I really hope this next book gets back to the main character, her abilities, her struggles, and the captivating way it was put together in the novels prior to this one.
Cassie Quinn is a psychic, she can see ghosts. But she can communicate with them as well. Don’t believe in things supernatural, paranormal? Well some people don’t believe in anything they can’t see, feel, hear or smell, like a higher power. That’s their choice and more power to them. This is a great escape novel that keeps the reader turning pages to see what happens next. It’s fun to kick back and relax. This is a well written novel.
Cassie and Harris are trying to find the answers to David's execution. Why? Who? David was a good, loving, caring man, husband, father, police office. Why?? As they check into it Cassie gets her tingles, her gut feelings and physic intuitions. But will it be enough? Savannah to Chicago's cold, blustery winter how much further do they have to go? How many more close calls? How many more dead? Great job. Thank you.
Overall, I enjoy the series. However, this one seemed a stretch with neither character really acting reliably. Harris was totally out of control, almost manic. Cassie kept saying out loud and to herself that all she wanted was to go home. However, she kept trotting behind Harris. And so stupidly just blithely putting herself up for a suicide level intervention. And we have to move to the next book for some semblance of closure?
While some plot developments are simplistic and crudely telegraphed, the overall tenor of writing is back on track. Cassie is clearly an appealing chapter (I've now read all five) but she's still being trapped in the emotional development of a 13- year old by the authors. This is a fully mature, strikingly attractive woman in her 30's! Let her libido out of its Victorian cage!!!
Meh. Cassie & Harris are in Chicago trying to figure out what happened with David. No psychic action except a shadow ghost. I kept reading, waiting for more to happen- and then the book abruptly ended. Now we have to wait for the next book to find out more of the story. I’m definitely not happy about that. I really felt let down as it was a struggle for me just trying to get into the book.
I have enjoyed the other books a lot but this one was just annoying. I wanted to punch Detective Harris in the face on pretty much every page and Cassie turned into a stooge , blindly following everything Harris told her to do. If I didn't have a "start it, finish it" policy I would have stopped early on. Really just a stupid plot and story...
Obsessed with finding out who killed their friend Detective David, both Detective Harris and Cassie seem to be running on impulse in order to find the person who ordered his hit. It's all slowly coming together. This book was just as good as the others but seemed to move a little slower than the books before it.
The first four books in this series were amazing! But then this book fell flat. Everything that was good about the first four books is missing here. Where was Cassie's gift? Just a shadow. What, exactly, was the point of this story? It was just a - for me - somewhat boring mystery. The information they gathered could have been summarized in a few paragraphs.
A decent enough story. It kept me engaged until the end. It surprised me that Cassie took off to Chicago without even checking on Apollo and Bear. That kind of bothered me. Just, " We have a clue! Gotta follow it!" Not even a fresh change a clothes, let alone a warmer coat. Otherwise, the book was enjoyable.
Loved all the previous books in the Cassie Quinn series, but this is where I’m quitting.
I feel like Cassie and Detective Harris are so out of character from whom I’ve grown to know and love. Yes, they’re grieving but it’s all so far fetched for me now. Ending the book with a cliff hanger and no resolution was the icing on the cake, sadly.
This book was nothing like the other books. It was not exciting at all. Cassie did not show any of her psychic abilities. It was more her playing second hand cop to Harris. I hope the next book is better. I’ve always like to read LT Ryan’s book but I was disappointed in this one.
All the books I have read by LT Ryan have been page turners and Cassie Quinn mysteries kept me going from one to the next. I now have to wait until next year for number 6. Keep them coming as all the various series have kept me coming back for more.
L. T. Ryan and K. M. Rought are excellent writers that know how to keep you on edge and wanting to know what will happen next. The characters are well written and unpredictable. This is a book you do not want to miss. He prepared for surprises! Happy reading! 😊
disappointed with this half of a story. I am tired of chasing a story and paying as I go. Only a shadow as a ghost and a cryptic revelation to magically discover skeletons in the closet. I won't be paying up for the next few chapters to see where it goes.
David is dead. How and why? Officer Harris and Cassie have vowed to find out who killed him and why. Plus all the other intriguing things going on in the background. Can't wait for next book in this series.
The killer has been found and is dead. There is still work to be done. Next stop is LA. I love this author and this series. Great job guys. Intriguing, can't put it down novel.
All of the Cassie Quinn Mysteries have been Excellent. Concealed in Shadow was action packed beginning To end. I have recommended the entire series to friends and family.
I've read all of the Cassie Quinn books but this wasn't the Quinn I've become familiar with. Where is her courage? And where are the ghosts? This was disappointing. Maybe I've read too many of Quinn. I will try the next book but that might be it.
I have given every book in this series a five star review until this one. It moves slower, I’m not enamored with Detective Harris’s tactics and Cassie seemed to not have a backbone in this one. I’m hoping this improves in the next book.
Continuation of the series to try to find David Klein killer. Not sure if there was pressure to get this done or what the reason, but this series is not up to LT Ryans’s normal level. Predictable outcomes, weak plot and execution. Not sure I will read the rest of this characters books.
