The Project Files #2

Lazarus: The Project Files Part 2

Rate this book
The Project Files conclusion.

After two weeks of keeping one step ahead of Wilderness security agents, Olivia is ready to take a breath and rest. Her guests are settling into the loft, the Oracle is getting the help he needs, and there’s no pressing crisis that demands her attention. Dean’s even pretty handy in the kitchen, and he seems to be settling into this strange new world of Psions and their remarkable powers. It’s time for relaxation, maybe even a little shopping.

And then a new case lands in Nick’s lap: a serial killer who murders women in their dreams, leaving behind no physical evidence and no clues as to the killer’s identity. Neither Nick nor Olivia have ever heard of such an ability, but even Dean agrees that all evidence points toward a Psion suspect.

With time running out before the killer strikes again, a tragic accident hits them in their hearts—and reveals a startling secret about one of the Projects they’re protecting. Olivia hates everything Wilderness stands for but this…this time their researchers have crossed a serious line, and she’s more determined than ever to tear the place apart—or die trying.

In a race to both stop a serial killer and prevent Wilderness from destroying more innocent lives, friends become enemies, enemies become allies, and decades-old secrets come to light. And when an unexpected confrontation shakes Olivia to her core, Dean finds courage he never thought he had—and discovers that not all heroes have superpowers.

24th January 2017: Reason for adding to wishlist: Should've added this last year, but forgot. This is the problem with self-published books, that aren't pre-orderable. Anyway, I really liked Trance and Changeling by the author, and this duology sounds pretty cool - I like sciencey things :-)

If Oracle has the volume turned up to 7 or 8, Lazarus ramps it up to 11.

We start out with a scene showing us Olivia and Nick escaping the Wilderness, and you know we're going to get deeper here. While in Oracle, we were able to enjoy Olivia and Nick's relationship, personalities, and powers, Lazarus strengthens our understanding of them. I loved them in book 1, but here we really get to know the pair. Yes, I fell even more in love with Nick #PresidentOfNickFanClub. Other characters also get more depth. Dean, who never impressed me in the first book, grows in this one until I like him too. We see more of Matthias, Michael, and Tom. Anthony, the android, gives us a stark contrast to the emotionless Lazarus. And even Gary Mitchell gets more depth, and despite his unforgivable backstory, you almost want to forgive him by the end.

Each and every thing that was set-up in book 1 plays a part in book 2. Yes, the serial killer aspect is a huge part of the novel's plot, and Medding ties it well into revealing secrets about the characters and to the bigger plot of stopping the Lazarus project.

There are no punches pulled in this book. Any character you like has the possibility of dying here, and the last quarter or so utterly destroyed me, yet was unputdownable. Even early in the book, events have devastating consequences. The action is as well done as in the first book, and the pace is just as well balanced. The climax feels very climatic and satisfactory in its conclusion.

Recommended for fans of: SF-based psychic powers, strong characters with strong relationships, powers with consequences, well-written action, Whedonesque dialogue, amped-up consequences, toasters and their psychic output.

Note: I read an unfinished version of this book, years ago.
