Case of the Rusty Sword

Rate this book
Zack and Jillian are making plans to build their dream home, and to get started, the old farmhouse where they’ve been living is being razed. Things get a little complicated when the first bulldozer cut reveals a secret chamber under the existing house. What is the previously unknown space doing on his property, how long has it been there, and who arranged to hide it in that particular foundation?

And—most mysteriously—how did a Civil War era sword and other old artifacts get there? From the moment the corgis see the old artifact, Sherlock takes an interest and lets Zack know there’s a mystery here, one he and his canine companions will be working to solve!

Readers are loving these indomitable dog sleuths. Meet Zack and the corgis, Sherlock and Watson, in this delightfully humorous series that pulls you right in.

Does a mystery book always have to focus around a murder? No. This book is proof-positive of that. Full of fun bit of history, focusing on Civil War times and the gold rush, fun corgis that are, well, way smarter than any of the humans around them, the "Case of the Rusty Sword" is a quick, fun read. As a history major and owner of a corgi mix, it hit just the right spot for me.

I've followed this series since the beginning and have found that I tend to somehow always find time to sit down immediately and read about Sherlock and Watson's latest crime solving antics. And, oh, yeah, their humans and human friends. Human Zach has at least grown accustomed to pulling out his phone to snap a photo of whatever the dogs seem to be focused on, usually some vague clue that, you guessed it, leads to the guilty party. It just takes the humans awhile to sit down and mull over the photos to decipher what clue the dogs are trying to give them. How do Sherlock and Watson, who I guess should be addressed as Lady Watson, do it? I have no clue. Neither do their human companions and friends. It doesn't matter. It's always a fun read, full of self-deprecating humor and, yes, intriguing clues.

In this case, they're focused on Civil War era artifacts found under the foundation of Zach's home, and the identities of the human bones also found. It's rather nice to see Zach go against the usual amateur sleuth trend when they are stolen and, rather than trying to solve the mystery of who and why, call in others more qualified to sort things out, including archeologists and the police. The dogs, of course, are front-and-center when it comes time to figure out who'd steal those same bones. Why would anyone swipe old bones? Not telling. You'll just have to read the book. I think you'll enjoy it, especially if you like your mysteries with humor, fun characters, wisecracks, and way smart, adorable corgis.

This is a great cozy mystery series featuring 2 adorable corgis as the main characters. Sherlock and Watson own Zack, an author and winery owner (inherited from his first wife) living in Pomme Valley, Oregon. He's married to Jillian, a wealthy business owner in her own right, who uses her wealth for good in the small town. Sherlock and Watsom guide Zack and his friend, Vance, local police Detective to clues to solve cases.

In this book, Zack and Jillian are demolishing Zack's house on the winery site and rebuilding the house of their dreams. Of course, with everything they do, things don't go smoothly, and when they find a trunk from the Civil War era, it starts a series of events leading to history being rewritten.

I really enjoyed the book and am looking forward to the next book being released. Each book is a standalone story but the books are best read in order of publication to preserve continuity of the characters and series.

Entertaining story with a lot of unfortunate filler.

I am a huge fan of Poole’s. I adore the corgi capers, and was savoring the opportunity to read this next installment. I am saddened that I could not give this one its usual 5-star review.

The story started off very intriguing, but suddenly we were up against a lot of filler. How do I know what filler is? Poole spends an inordinate amount of time in this book using his main character, Zachary, to discuss the writer’s process, among them, the use of filler. While interesting, I feel like it was being used to get to the word count Poole needed to complete his contractual obligation for the novel.

The other element that was overused was his device of back tracking to explain older story plots and introducing his recurring characters. I always nodded and understood the general device of introducing the main character and the two corgis, but this time it seemed like every character was subject to elongated exposition. Again, I felt a more in-depth plot would have eliminated the need for it.

Still and all, it was lovely to read through another adventure of the gang, and anxiously await the next installment. I’d gladly wait a bit longer for a stronger installment, if that’s what it takes to get back to the quality of the previous novels.

Sherlock and Watson are at it again

I really enjoy these two "furballs" and their dad. In this story the author avoids the problem with many cozys in that the murder rate seems to go up in small towns. This time there is no murder involved; it's all ancient history. With the discovery of artifacts under the foundation of Zach's house, there's a new mystery to be solved. Really enjoyed this book and am eagerly awaiting the next one.

They’ve done it again

A very good story. Well thought out plot. Some great new characters. The Corgis continue to be the lovable guys they really are. And, they are smarter than all the humans in the story.

Surprise

Zach and the dogs stumble across an old sword which leads to a different type of mission that they are also suited for. Time to go back in time a bit for the full story of how the town started.
