"It was always best to keep to oneself, to stay guarded at all times, and not let anyone have my heart... because marriage, love, romance... all of it was for fools."

A modern girl in an old Hawaiian world, Princess Haukea wants nothing to do with love or romance. She would rather travel or seek an adventure. And after she barely dodged her betrothal to the King of Hilo, she wants nothing more than freedom.

But upon her return to Waialua, O’ahu, things are not the same. Two mysterious bounty hunters show up in town, and with them, trouble. Haukea finds herself entangled in their business, and no matter how much she resists, she is drawn to one of the hunters.

Except… she vowed never to fall in love. As Haukea encounters magic, menehune, and secrets, she must confront her fears… or her life, and the lives of others, will be at a terrible risk.

Haukea is inspired by the story of Snow White, as well as Hawaiian mythology, folklore, and culture. Fans of clean romance and happily ever afters will be moved by Haukea, the second book in The Enchanted Hawai‘i Collection, a fairy tale and folklore retelling series set in ancient Hawaii.

This is the most insightful, clever, and interesting Snow White retelling I've ever read! I wasn't quite sure during the first half of the book where everything was going, but I loved seeing it all come together in the last half. Haukea is a fascinating character. She has a lot of confidence but dives deep into evaluating her perspectives and emotions. I loved the things she realizes about her power to choose and create the life she wants. The references to other characters that are featured in the next books in the series also made me look extra forward to reading those!

A very clever retelling of Snow White.

Haukea was such an interesting character. Having seen the effects of broken relationships, she was dead set against giving her heart away. Being so fearless in other aspects of the life, she came to understand that embracing that fear of love and moving forward choosing love was worth the effort.

Akamu had his own inner struggles between his feelings for Haukea and doing what was right, and his duty as a bounty hunter.

I loved the Hawaiian take on the 'Seven Dwarves' with the menehune and the trials being a substitute for the Queen's attempts on Snow White's life in the original tale.

I loved seeing Haukea get her own happy ending after being such a good friend to Lehua in the previous book.

This was a fun retelling of Snow White with Hawaiian influences. This version of Snow White was more dynamic. She felt more well-rounded and driven. Can’t wait to read the next in the series.

🌺YA Fairytale Retelling
🌺No Spice (kissing is as far as it gets)
🌺No Explicit Language
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The book was cute, fun, sweet, enjoyable. A solid read. Would read again at some point.

What a creative and clever retelling of Snow White! I really enjoyed the Menehune, the magic, and all the beautiful imagery. I had a hard time putting this one down and kept sneaking in chances to read to see where Huakea's journey of learning more about herself would go.

Haukea is a rounded protagonist in comparison to the other female characters in the book series. She's definitely "not like the other girls" because she wants to travel and go on adventures, rather than be a married stay-at-home caregiver. This retelling of Snow White is set in the Hawaiian islands, mixing culture myths with the western fairytale. There are valuable themes and lessons. Also a potential love interest and romance.
