Just when Katha thinks nothing could be worse than betrayal and heartbreak, the universe sends an unexpected twist her way – death. Katha cannot stay in Nasayan, the afterlife, because she has been reaped before her time. Unfortunately, she can't be sent back either, because she knows what comes after death. Varuna knows he reaped Katha's soul as per the rules. Then, why the error? He knows he has been framed and must figure out why. The Reaper is determined to return Katha to her time. But is it even possible? Can he return Katha to Earth, and unearth what went wrong before more souls are left in limbo?
And, what of Katha? Why was she a target? Can she erase her time in Nasayan? Can time be reset? Or, will she always remain in limbo?
What did I just read🥺💗 The story is expertly woven with multiple POVs, which kept me hooked from start to end. The blurb and the title drew me in, but the author's vivid and picturesque narration truly kept me turning the pages✨️ This is definitely one of those books that totally engulfs you in right from the first page and leaves you wanting more.
The world-building is incredibly done, with a rich tapestry of mythical creatures (including centaurs, merfolk, fairies, elves, and a lot more)✨️The plot is packed with action, suspense and emotional moments that will leave you breathless🥶 What I truly adored about this book is its focus on Friendship, Hope, Trust, Grief and Resilience. Absolutely adored the strong FMC and loved the fact that equal importance is given to all the characters which added a layer of depth to the plot !! The bond shared between Arjun and Varuna is underrated and priceless🤍Definitely an unforgettable read for me! If you're looking for a fantasy book that will keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you feeling inspired, look no further!
When I picked up A Soul Reaping Gone Wrong, I didn’t expect it to be completely pulled into a world that felt haunting, emotional, and impossible to leave behind.
The story begins with Katha who's broken, betrayed, and longing for peace. But instead of finding rest, she wakes up in Nasayan, the afterlife. The catch? She was never meant to be there. That idea alone being a mistake in the universe chilled me. And then came Varuna, the reaper whose path collides with hers, and suddenly the story became so much more than I imagined.
What kept me hooked was how fast-paced yet deeply layered it was. The chapters made me tear through it, but the emotions slowed me down, forcing me to pause and think. The afterlife was described as some faraway myth; it felt real, alive, unsettling in the best way. And at the heart of it all were two characters who felt so human in their struggles that I couldn’t stop rooting for them.
For me, this book was about choice, grief, second chances, and the terrifying idea of what happens when fate gets it wrong. The twists kept surprising me, but it was the questions the book left me with is Can a mistake be undone? Can a soul find its way back? Or does destiny always win?
I closed this book feeling both satisfied and unsettled, which is exactly what I want from a story like this. It’s gripping, it’s thought-provoking, and it proves that Indian fantasy can be every bit as bold and imaginative as anything on the shelves today.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 / 5 — a haunting, unique, and unforgettable read.
3.5/5✨ A Soul Reapening Gone Wrong is a YA gothic fantasy book, and I had such a good time reading it😍🥰
This book has the greatest found-family vibes.🎉😍 I absolutely loved the friendships and the bonding between the characters, and honestly, I’m still missing all of them. 😆🥰❤️ The character development was beautiful, and these characters are definitely going to stay with me forever. ❤️💯 At first, the pacing felt a bit slow for me, but once it picked up, the story became interesting and entertaining. The writing and language were easy to follow and nicely done. I was fully invested-though somewhere in the middle I got a little lost, and it felt like something was missing. Some parts also became a bit predictable. The story and world-building lacked a bit of depth, and I found myself wanting more from the world. But overall, I had a really good reading experience, and I’m definitely excited for the next book😊🎉
So if you love YA fantasy with magical creatures, enchanting forests, mermaids, unforgettable characters, the chosen one trope, beautiful friendships, and a fast-paced plot, you should definitely pick this one up.💯😍
A Soul Reaping Gone Wrong is a fantasy novel by Rosheena Zehra that revolves around Katha, who dies unexpectedly and arrives in Nasayan, a realm where she cannot stay because her soul has been reaped before its time. Varuna, the reaper, believes he followed the rules. So, was he framed? To find out what happens, you have to read the book.
Firstly, kudos to the author for writing a fantasy novel because I rarely come across fantasy novels written by Indian authors. I loved how she developed and fleshed out all the characters. Each chapter has a title that gives a hint of what is to come. Although the novel is quite lengthy, the chapters are short and action-packed, which kept me hooked from start to finish.
The world-building is imaginative and well thought-out, making the story even more engaging. I highly recommend the book to readers who enjoy the fantasy genre.
I didn’t just read this book. I fell into it—and once I did, I couldn’t climb back out.
From the very first page, the story wraps itself around a feeling I didn’t know how to name but have carried for years: restlessness that doesn’t come from wanting more, but from feeling slightly misplaced in what you already have. The protagonist’s thoughts move the way real thoughts do—messy, circular, half-finished. Insomnia, strange dreams, an odd sense of familiarity with something unknown, the dull comfort of coffee, the quiet pressure of friends who mean well but don’t quite understand. It all feels achingly human. There is no rush to explain, no dramatic hook screaming for attention. Instead, the story leans in close and whispers, “You’ve felt this too, haven’t you?”
What struck me most was how gently it normalizes alienation. Not the loud, tragic kind—but the everyday version. Going to work. Meeting people. Laughing at the right moments. Pretending that this rhythm is enough. The writing captures that hollow space between “I should be fine” and “why don’t I feel like I belong anywhere?” with frightening accuracy. Even the smallest details—zoning out mid-conversation, forgetting names, fixating on sensations like taste and warmth—feel intentional, like breadcrumbs leading toward something bigger without ever spelling it out.
And then there’s the subtle hint of the unreal. Fire imagined between palms. A dream that refuses to stay a dream. A sense that reality itself might be slightly misaligned. The book doesn’t shove fantasy at you—it lets it seep in slowly, the way strange thoughts do at three in the morning when you’re exhausted and alone with yourself. By the time you realize something is off, you’re already too emotionally invested to step back.
What makes this book unforgettable is its refusal to offer easy answers. Not everything is fixed. Not every wound is healed. The questions remain, heavy and unresolved — but there is strength in that honesty. There is something deeply brave about choosing awareness over comfort, truth over illusion. By the end, it doesn’t feel like finishing a story. It feels like surviving a reckoning.
This is not a book you casually recommend.
This is the kind of book you press into someone’s hands and say, “Read this. Trust me.”
If you’ve ever felt detached from your own life, if you’ve ever followed all the rules and still felt wrong, if you’ve ever wondered whether you were meant for something else but couldn’t name it—this book will haunt you in the best way possible.
I closed it and immediately wanted to start over.
And if you’re reading this review right now, wondering whether it’s worth your time— it already has you.
A soul reaping gone wrong tells the story about friendship, sacrifice, destiny & determination. When the god of death reaps the wrong soul both of them has to face the consequences, yet it’s completely different for both of them Katha the girl whose soul gets reaped earlier than her said time gets stuck in a place called Nasayan that looks like the exact replica of her home back on Earth but evil lurks in every step. Katha makes out the best of her situation by befriending immortals Arjun and Kaushiky, their friendship was one of the best things about this book. Even though Katha was the mc I personally loved Kaushiky a lot more than her bcoz of her sheer determination to protect her friends at all costs, she completely won my heart when she traded her immortality for the key to hell for saving Varuna (God of death) who was framed for reaping the wrong soul.
The story focuses a lot on what comes after death and also questions our assumptions about afterlife. The world building was quite heavy on the first few chapters,it had all the elements of a fantasy land like valley of flowers, colourful lakes, fairies, elves, floating rocks called Kurmas and several immortal beings. The writing was very descriptive with multiple povs and the author deserves all the appreciation for writing such a complicated story with an engaging flow. I also loved the fact that the author gave importance to all the characters and their personal journey rather than just focusing on Katha & adding other characters in between. The fantasy and magic portions of the story was equally fascinating and added a lot more depth to the story than what I was expecting. Overall the book mixes mythology with fantasy very beautifully and I loved ever second of it. This is perfect for those who love a good mythology inspired fantasy novels.
Some tales aren’t simply read they stay with you, whispering in your thoughts long after the book is closed.A Soul Reaping Gone Wrong is one of those stories.
Katha, a young woman taken from life too soon, drifts into Nasayan—a realm where reality shimmers like a half-remembered dream. Time bends, shadows murmur, and light spills in impossible ways. Each step she takes is both fragile and fierce, fear and wonder entwined, and I felt as though I were walking beside her, suspended between life and death, between the seen and the unseen.
What touched me most was the quiet endurance of love. Maenikah’s grief, Arjun’s fragile soul teetering on the edge, and the guiding presence of Varuna and Kaushiky reminded me that even in a world ruled by cosmic laws, human connection endures. Zehra’s writing captures grief, trust, and attachment with such subtlety that every heartbeat of the characters felt like my own
The journey into Vismaran a realm of dreamlike liminality was mesmerizing. Fragile tension hangs in every corner, the kind that makes the heart tremble at the thought of being lost, left behind, or untethered. These passages urging reflection on the fleetingness of life, the weight of love, and the quiet courage it takes to hold on.
More than a fantasy adventure, this story is a meditation on life, love, grief, and the choices that shape who we are. Reading it felt like standing on the edge of two worlds, holding both wonder and heartbreak in my hands.
If you’re someone who cherishes fantasy that moves your heart as much as it sparks your imagination, who loves about love, identity, and resilience threaded through mystical worlds, then this book is the perfect choice for you.
You know those books that just completely change your mind about a genre? That's what "A Soul Reaping Gone Wrong” by rosheena did for me. l've always been a little on the fence about fantasy, but this one was a total game-changer. The story kicks off with a massive cosmic screw-up: a heartbroken girl named Katha dies, but she wasn't supposed to yet. Now she's a major glitch in the system, and the reaper who took her soul, Varuna, is certain he did everything by the book. But what really hooked me was the surprising bond and friendship that blossoms between these characters amidst all the cosmic chaos.I love such stories. As I turned the pages, I found myself getting lost in the world-building and the complexities of the characters. The author's writing is engaging AF, and the way they weave together themes of fate, reincarnation, and cosmic balanc is pure magic. I loved how the story explores the complexities of Katha and Varuna's relationship, and how their bond evolves throughout the book. What really stood out to me was the way the author balanced action, grief, and friendship - it's a delicate balance, but they pulled it off perfectly. The short chapters make it impossible to put down, and the story is full of twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat. Honestly, this book still haunts me - in the best way possible! The characters and story stuck with me long after I finished reading, and I'm still thinking about them. If you're looking for a book that'll leave a lasting impression, this is it.
A Soul Reaping Gone Wrong by Rosheena Zehra tracks Katha, a young girl who dies prematurely and finds herself in Nasayan, the afterlife. She wasn't supposed to be there, though, and her arrival disrupts the balance of everything. Varuna, the reaper in charge, has to determine why this went wrong and whether or not he can make things right. A combination of mystery, magic, and battling against fate ensues.
honestly, this book was like entering a movie. The author writes so vividly that I was able to imagine every scene play out in my mind. It is easy for beginners and the words are basic, so even if you have not read a lot of books, you will not get lost or confused. The short chapters keep you guessing and make it extremely easy to binge read. My favorite thing is the way the action and emotion are balanced within the story. It's not simply about fantasy beings or the rules of the afterlife, it's also about sorrow, decisions, and do-overs. Katha and Varuna's story seemed so authentic that I couldn't help but be rooting for them. The pace is fast, but the novel also forces you to take a step back and consider life, death, and destiny.
If you're after an Indian fantasy that's new, well written, and easy to follow, this is it. It's emotional, evocative, and full of twists that make you keep turning the pages. The tale stays with you long after you finish reading, leaving you to ponder destiny and second chances. A ride that's not soon forgotten.
Finally a fantasy fiction that gives us a glimpse of afterlife and the in-between/the limbo (a magical realm comprising elves, fairies, talking frogs, unicorns and what not)! - The story revolves around Katha, who recently got her heart broken and was trying to cope up with it. One day, as per her friend's suggestion, she goes to a party only to have her heart ripped again (figuratively-sees her boyfriend already moved on) Devastated, she runs away from the party, unaware that not only her heart; but her soul is also going to get reaped by the ripper literally) , when she meets with an accident. Katha finds herself in a place which looks familiar but doesn't feel the same & is accompanied by a strange man, Varuna (the soul reaper). To add to her misery, Varuna confesses that there has been a glitch and it wasn't her time yet!!! ( See, even Gods can make a mistake) i While Varuna contemplates the reason of this grave mistake; Katha is left thinking if there any way she can go back to Earth or will she be stuck in Nasayan (the limbo) forever? Rosheena has a vivid imagination and has curated the details impeccably well! You will notice the minute details she has given a lot of thought to; for example, when she addressed goddesses as Lord in her story, emphasising on the fact that all royalty is addressed as Lord irrespective of the gender. A unputdownable read Pick it up if you enjoy fantasy fiction or want to explore new genres!
A Soul Reaping Gone Wrong by Rosheena Zehra is a welcome entry into a place of magic that draws heavily upon Indian imagination. With mermaid, centaurs, elf, flying turtle, and fairy elements, it is clear that there is much more to the narrative than meets the surface level.
A Soul Reaping Gone Wrong introduces Katha, a soul whose reaping by Varuna is premature, causing her to be neither here nor there, in either the world of Nasayan, which is the afterlife. Instead, her questions turn into discoveries.
A tragic error morphs gradually into something far larger on its scale. A realization sets in that Nasayan itself is at risk, and that our protagonist may be the only one to bring counterbalance. I thoroughly enjoyed how it seamlessly weaved magical quests and emotions of belonging, duty, and loyalty. Friendships in this story appear quite authentic, and no detail goes unexplored in terms of building this fantasy world of theirs. It was like observing a fantasy show playing out, episode by episode, and chapter by chapter.
The writing style itself flows well, which lends to the story being an easy, though immersive, read for those who love fantasy. Additionally, it’s great to see fantasy elements blended with Indian mythology inspired settings.
✨ A magical and heartfelt fantasy that offers adventure, emotion and imagination in equal measure. Perfect for readers who enjoy rich fantasy worlds with a strong emotional core.
A Soul Reaping Gone Wrong hooked me from the very first chapter. The premise is fresh and intriguing.Katha’s accidental death and arrival in Nasayan,a realm where souls go after death, immediately sets the tone for a thought-provoking yet comforting fantasy.I loved how the story weaves together themes of fate, cosmic balance and the ripple effects of one unexpected mistake, while also grounding itself in very human themes of grief, friendship and purpose. . . Rosheena’s writing is clear, accessible and beautifully paced. She doesn’t overwhelm the reader with complex lore instead, she allows you to explore this new realm alongside Katha, making you feel every moment of her emotional journey.I particularly appreciated how the fantastical elements never overshadowed the heart of the story and Katha’s internal struggle remains the emotional anchor throughout the book. . . While the plot was engaging and the characters memorable,I did find myself wanting a bit more depth in certain world-building aspects, especially regarding Nasayan’s rules and the consequences of such cosmic mistakes. That said, the balance between light storytelling and deeper themes makes this a wonderful read for both seasoned fantasy fans and those new to the genre. . . Overall,it's a heartfelt,page-turning fantasy that lingers long after you close the last page.I recommend this masterpiece to all the readers out there!🤍
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A gripping sci-fi fantasy that stays with you
A Soul Reaping Gone Wrong is one of those rare books that instantly pulls you into its world and refuses to let go. The concept itself is intriguing — a soul taken before its time — but the way the story unfolds makes it truly unforgettable.
Katha’s journey begins with chaos, betrayal, and heartbreak, only to take a shocking turn when death arrives too early. Waking up in Nasayan, a place where souls are judged and sent forward according to strict rules, she becomes an exception that shouldn’t exist. The mystery of why she was taken, and how such an error could occur, keeps you hooked from start to finish. Varuna, the reaper, adds depth to the story with his moral conflict and determination to uncover the truth.
What makes this book stand out is its immersive storytelling and emotionally intense writing. The characters are morally grey, layered, and very human, making their struggles feel real. The plot balances sci-fi, fantasy, and emotional depth beautifully, with constant tension and unanswered questions that push you to keep reading.
If you enjoy afterlife concepts, time errors, strong world-building, and stories that don’t play safe, this book is absolutely worth your time. A compelling, thought-provoking read that leaves you thinking long after the last page. Highly recommend
A Soul Reaping Gone Wrong by Roseena Zehra is a haunting fantasy that begins with a single mistake and gradually unfolds into a far deeper and more mysterious journey....The story follows Katha, whose soul is taken before its destined time, leaving her suspended between Earth and the afterlife....What starts as disorientation soon turns into revelation, as hidden truths, unfamiliar realms, and powerful forces begin to emerge.
The novel’s world-building is rich and immersive, layered with mythological elements, strange beings, and dream-like landscapes that make each chapter visually striking.... The plot expands steadily, weaving small, seemingly insignificant moments into much larger consequences, keeping the reader constantly curious and emotionally invested....
Even after finishing the book, it feels as though the story hasn’t fully let go. Certain scenes linger in the mind, and the atmosphere stays with you long after the final page... It’s a surreal reading experience, otherworldly while reading, yet oddly real once you step back into reality.
While reading it, I felt like I was a part of that unreal world, like I had been living there.
A beautifully imagined fantasy with lingering emotional depth, highly recommended for readers who enjoy mythological themes, atmospheric storytelling, and slow-unfolding mysteries!!
Imagine waking up in a place where you don’t belong stuck between life and death. That’s what happens to Katha when she dies suddenly and finds herself in a mysterious realm called Nasayan. Her soul wasn’t meant to be taken yet, and the reaper, Varuna, is sure he followed the rules. So, what really went wrong? This book isn’t just about the afterlife it’s about choices, mistakes, and the beautiful chaos of being human. The story moves smoothly, sometimes fast and exciting, sometimes calm and emotional. You really start to care about Katha and Varuna as their journey unfolds with moments of tension, and hope.
The book has story parts and each chapter contains some really beautiful quotes. I’ve underlined my favorite ones you can read them by sliding through. Also, the opening dedication line of the book was so, so beautiful.
The world Rosheena creates feels magical yet real. The writing is clear, the chapters are short and action-packed, and every detail adds to the charm. I especially loved how the author built such a unique fantasy world that still feels relatable & magical. A beautifully written tale that stays with you well beyond the final chapter.
Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys fantasy and emotional storytelling. ✨
Okay HELLO??? Who gave this book the right to yank me out of real life and dump me into a limbo full of elves, merfolk, fairies, reapers?????? Katha is literally just vibing through heartbreak like the rest of us depressed girlies and BAM suddenly she’s dead-but-not-dead and dragged into Nasayan by a soul reaper named Varuna who may or may not be a menace but also kinda adorable?? Love that for her. Could NOT be me. I would’ve simply refused to die 💀 The vibes?? Immaculate. The world-building?? Head-empty-no-thoughts-just-VIBES. The mythical creatures?? Serving ✨Avengers of folklore✨ and I ate it up. The plot has action, grief, friendship, betrayal, AND emotional damage, all sprinkled in like Rosheena said "pain? sprinkle sprinkle" AND THE FRIENDSHIP FACTOR??? I’ll fight anyone who says that wasn’t precious. 🤺🤍 Hands down to one of the best reads of January😭✨ Can't wait to read more of her works in future!! ✨ Pick it up if you want an emotional roller coaster with mythical spice and mental breakdown seasoning✨
The book starts with reaping of a wrong soul named "Katha" who is the main protagonist of the book. She is as normal as us stubborn, weird, humorous especially she has that many questions in her head while her stay at Nasayan.
The story moves forward with many surprises, bonds, travels, reality, secrets and many more. The thing is Was katha's soul reaped wantedly ? Or was it just a coincidence ?
This book is a bit lengthier with some chapters that I felt a bit longer and unnecessary other than that this book was a page turner and interesting one. I loved the way Rosheena has put up the historical facts and many interesting creatures and its features very beautifully.
Loved the character Varuna and Kaushiky so much. And I loved how the ending was a reality though its just a fictional one.
So I would recommend this book to fantasy lovers (where you guys read lengthy books), afterlife wanderers and ofc one who wants to explore a new genre.
Can you imagine waking up dead by mistake? Yeah, chills.
Okay, WOW!!!this book hit me right in the feels! From the very first page, I was sucked into Nasayan, the afterlife, where Katha wakes up in a world she was never meant to be in.
Enter Varuna, the reaper whose job it is to guide souls but Katha’s soul wasn’t supposed to be his responsibility. Their journey together is emotional, fast-paced, and filled with twists I didn’t see coming. There’s betrayal, loss, second chances, and a dash of romance that feels real not forced. What really stuck with me were the human moments, despite being in this mythical world, Katha and Varuna's struggles and choices felt SO relatable.
If you’re looking for a fantasy that’s not just a wild ride but also emotional, thought-provoking, and will have you reflecting on fate and second chances long after you close the book, this is it! Definitely a 5-star read for me.
If you’re into haunting stories that stay with you, grab this one NOW.

Looking for a fantasy book that'll break your heart a little and still leave you thinking? A Soul Reaping Gone Wrong is my latest obsession. After a long time, I’ve read such a greatttt book! The concept of the afterlife in Nasayan instantly pulled me in...a soul taken too soon by mistake is such a unique idea and I loved this world so much, I know I’ll re-read it again....Katha’s journey with Varun the Reaper beautifully explores betrayal, sadness, friendship, and fairness in such an easy and heartfelt way. A Soul-Reaping Gone Wrong is a beautiful blend of Indian mythology, magic, and mystery. Roshina Zehra has created a richly imaginative world where souls, reapers, and realms collide in a thrilling story full of heart.
I loved how clean and meaningful the storytelling was—no smut, just pure fantasy and powerful friendships. As a desi fantasy reader, I felt seen. This book truly has the potential to become a favorite among lovers of mythological fiction. It deserves all the hype!
A Soul Reaping Gone Wrong offers a fresh and emotional fantasy blend of afterlife mystery and earnest character journeys. Katha’s movement from death to rebellion is exciting, and Varuna, the binding reaper, is complex and multidimensional. Nasayan is an evocative and imaginative world. A fast-paced, emotionally robust, and thought-provoking read with just enough dash of romance and suspense.
What if death is not the end but just the beginning of a chaos?
A Soul Reaping Gone Wrong by R. Zehera is a hauntingly poetic blend of fantasy, philosophy and raw human emotion. The story spirals into a realm where souls have unfinsihed business and fate itself fumbles. By the time you reach the end, you will realise that may be reaper isnt the villain but the system is.
Fantasy with unexpected thrill, gets better with every page! I began the book with very controlled expectations, but was entirely absorbed in its world by the second half! The plot completely subverts expectations, in the most engaging, interesting ways. If you pick it up, make sure to read on till the very end.
Just when she thinks she has already hit her worst phase in life, death comes to say hello. But she was not to die in the first place. Katha, is now stuck in a realm where she is neither dead nor alive. The reaper who mistakenly reaps her soul is now on a mission to set things right.
This is not just a story of being stuck between worlds but a story of resilience, strength, friends, trust and most importantly a story of self discovery. This book by Rosheena Zehra was such an amazing experience to read. It's packed with adventure, suspense and a great story line and world building. Throughout the story the characters feel real and have strong arcs. It has a meaningful end with a deep message. It is a perfect read especially for young adults as well. If you love fantasy you should definitely pick this up.
