Violet Black might be a witch.
Clark Grey might be a werewolf.
Probably they're just normal people in a small town with WAY too much time on their hands and an undeniable chemistry. Except Clark has a secret that Violets grandma made him promise not to tell her. A secret that will destroy her, and everything between them just as it's heating up.

Noelle Rider is the romantic half of Perry Dog Publishing. Though E. N. Crane books always have a romantic subplot, Noelle Rider gets to fully explore spice, connection, letting go, and learning to trust. They are awkward, funny, and never sweet.

Like all books she writes, Noelle continues her dedication to plus-size, caffeine addicted, sarcastic, neurodivergent characters under this pen name and would never let them tell their story without an animal sidekick that steals the show. Currently exploring fantasy romance, the available titles are filled with magic, tyranny and a healthy dose of social and political commentary.

She currently lives in Boise with her C-suite canines and unpaid husband intern.

This was a cute read! But it felt all over the place for me…

This novel clearly aims to capture the essence of an autumnal setting, and in certain moments it succeeds beautifully. One passage in particular stands out:

“The air was crisp, a hint of baked goods and fallen leaves in the air. While it never snowed in Pumpkin Valley, the air had a bite. All of the trees in her vision had burst into a colorful mosaic making every lawn artwork.”

This description evokes a vivid sensory experience, situating the reader firmly within a cozy, seasonal atmosphere. It reflects the author’s ability to craft imagery that resonates with warmth and nostalgia.

However, beyond this highlight, the narrative struggled to maintain cohesion. The plotlines often felt scattered, the character development insufficiently explored, and the overall structure burdened by competing threads. As a result, the immersive potential established early on was not sustained throughout the text.

Ultimately, while the novel contained moments of evocative prose, it did not fully achieve the consistency or clarity necessary to hold my engagement.

*would not recommend for under 18*

This book starts out quick with Vi wondering where her “man” is, and threatening to stake him out in the backyard on a short chain. No, she’s not a deranged serial killer, nor into bondage, well she might be. The man in question is her dog that she adopted from the local animal shelter who keeps disappearing in the night.
While well written, her steamy descriptions of how Clark makes her feel made me want to reach for a glass of ice water, but also to keep reading. If you’re looking for a novella that will keep you warm, this is it.

One of the best themes in this book was the theme of family, the blood ones, and the ones you choose. Her astute perceptions regarding family had tears coming to my eyes. The seriousness of the family themes was nicely set off by the steamy sexy scenes.

This was somewhat of an odd, confusing read for me. There's a lot of head hopping, which made the story hard to follow at times. There are also a lot of assertions that people are more than what they seem (witch, werewolf, fae, etc.), but that's never proven or elaborated on, which was strange.

The interactions between the MMC and FMC felt very forced. Absinthe, the black lab was really the only redeeming aspect of this book for me.

I received an arc of this book....and I am now a confirmed fan of Ms Rider! Such a fun read...and you'll fall in love with Sgt Pupperson. This is not a genre I normally seek out,, but I think I'm a convert! Thanks, Noelle, for penning such a fun book!!
