Young Adult (YA) Fantasy Fiction

Secrets give a person power over those who have been left in the dark.

Kally’s mother is committed, she’s losing her best friend, and she digs up a dark family secret about her brother’s death. As more secrets unravel, she is thrust into a world of magic that she never knew existed.

As Kally’s own world begins to shatter, so does the larger world around her. This engaging coming-of-age book will have readers invested in her emotional, life-or-death journey that has only just begun.

********* Set in the present day, the story follows 15-year-old Kally Anderson as she discovers that witches are real and that she comes from a long line of them. As global witch hunts spark terror and confusion, Kally must decide if and how she wants to take part in an impending and apocalyptic Great War that will pit witches against non-witches. It seems like everyone’s got their path laid out for the amagus (non-witches), practicing witches, and witches who’ve decided to forego their powers in the hope of peace. More so, the world is divided into extremes that can never coexist. So where does that leave Kally? The Third Path is an entertaining read and one that sheds light on a number of sensitive topics. Plots and subplots revolve around depression, suicide, speech impediments, racism, prejudice, extreme views, and identity—and they are all woven authentically into the story. It is a very grounded and cyclical novel that is based, not on witches, but on human emotion. You will easily find yourself in Kally’s shoes as she comes to terms with the supernatural version of who she is, as well as the teenage girl finding her place in the world and amongst her core group of friends. This magical realism novel will have fantasy and non-fantasy fans gripped by Kally's story.
