Krae's nose always knows. She has hyperosmia; a heightened olfactory sense which tells her something is rising in Stevats--and it stinks. Horrors from the past seek to resurface, heralded by the terrible odor, and the screeching of crows.Death swirls all around Krae, bringing chaos and confusion. Her marriage, her job, and her very being, all seem at risk by something ethereal lingering in the air, something just below the range of even her perception. But is the stench haunting Krae's house a threat, or a warning?
Tim Eagle is an author who lives full time, on the road, with his wife, Maria and their dog, Cocoa. He grew up in Michigan and is inspired by the dysfunction, insanity, and nepotism of rural America. "The questions asked of life are within the soul, the answers are found in the dark of our minds."
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book, and this is now the 3rd book of Tim's that I have read and enjoyed. The first 2 books, Vasectamus 1&2, were more on the extreme horror side, and this one, I found, was more of a dark, supernatural horror. It was creepy, gory, and had me quickly turning the pages in anticipation of what was to come. I liked how the main character, Krae, uses her hyperosmia to work out what's going on around her, and when people are lying or not. It's an interesting take and not one I've come across before! I very much look forward to more from Tim! 4/5 creepy crows(no crow emoji so using the eagle in honor of Tim! 😉) from me 🦅🦅🦅🦅
Dark, disturbing and enthralling. I have never read anything quite like it. I got immersed in the story and found myself wondering what it would be like to have this condition.
This novella was sent to me by the author in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.
Krae is, at its core, a captivating concept. Krae encounters and catalogues every smell she comes across, and can instantly know the intentions of the individual. The last chapter is gripping and chilling, full of nightmare fuel, and had a pretty unsuspected twist. I enjoyed this novella. It’s a unique and quick read. There were some areas that I wish had been fleshed out a little bit more, but overall it was a chilling read. I certainly won’t look at eels the same way again. Recommend!
This is my third read from author Tim Eagle and I liked it the best. In fact, I REALLY enjoyed this. It was quite delightful to encounter a protagonist who fails at the "airbrushed perfection" that films, television, and Internet insist we each achieve. Genetically Krae falls far short (slightly intentional pun) and is socially unacceptable. Actually, none of the characters here are anything but imperfect, yet I found them very understandable. Then Mr. Eagle introduces a couple of "out-of-left-field" aspects [neither of which I will spoil] which make this novella that much more intriguing.
If you're new to this author, I'd recommend commencing with KRAE.
Krae by Tim Eagle was a quick read novella. Have you ever smelled something that brought a memory to the front of your mind? This story will take that and turn it upside down. This story has a little of everything, love, mystery, death, and man was it bizarre in the best way. You'll have to read it to understand. This was one of the more interesting stories I've read in a while, and there's a good chance I'll never look at crows or eels the same again.
An intriguing story of Krae, a woman who catalogs every smell she’s ever encountered from the scent of lies, to the scents of death. There was so much packed into this novella. A cheating husband, a plethora of smells, and a couple of twists that I wouldn’t have seen coming make this story really enjoyable. I was flipping through the pages wondering “what the hell is going to happen?!” wildly as the story progressed.
Another wildly creative and unique story that’s sure to keep you on your toes and guessing.
