My Wife, the President: Legends of the Master Spy One
I’m not the best of men, but I’m not the worst of them either. I’m simply a man with a hard job to do. A complicated one. One that can get a little bit dirty. But a duty that is absolutely necessary for the future of my nation.
And as the husband of the first-ever female President of the United States, that’s a responsibility that is very close to my heart. Sort of like Arizona, not that my best friend for two decades would ever understand. Even if we are kind of married now.
There’s a lot of things she wouldn’t understand about me. But that’s okay. It’s not her job to worry about the deep state Committee that’s trying to make every politician their puppet, including her. She certainly doesn’t need to know that I’m on that Committee, or that, as my alter ego the Master Spy, I can thwart those plans. After all, that’s my job. Hers is running the free world.
But between trying to maintain three different identities, training a new henchman, hunting down the one that got away, and keeping the bad guys from hurting the woman I love, it’s all in a day’s work. The secret that gets me is my unrequited love for my best friend turned wife.

I feel like I would’ve understood this book better if I’d read Jes’s Kristian Clark series first as this is appears to be a spinoff/sequel (maybe?) to that universe, with many references to characters and even sorta events I felt like I should know about but didn’t. That aside though, I did enjoy my time with this story and it has a high potential to be bumped up to a four star once I read all the other connecting books and figure out more clearly what the heck is going on for real, lol.
Earnest is an interesting character study, as at first I wasn’t sure if he’s a good or bad guy and frankly I still can’t confirm on either one even after reading this book and being halfway through the second one at time of writing this review. He’s truly a “morally gray” character which isn’t my typical jam, but Jes writes him so well I can’t help but be pulled into his shady world and feel intrigued even as I’m questioning his motives and if he should go about things the way he is. I love his and Arizona’s interactions, they are clearly good for each other even though they have a long way to go to get to that ultimate power couple status. And while we only see Arizona through Earnest’s eyes, I like her passion and spirit to lead her country in the best way possible and actually keep her word to her voters. Ah, if only real politicians were truly like this…
The plot I was mostly confused about and just hanging on for the ride (mostly due to the Kristian Clark references), but I got very invested I think around the halfway point and am all in after the epilogue because holy cow what is going on? I need answers! And the flavor combination of spy/espionage political conspiracy thriller, sci-fi, superhero, rom-com sprinkles, and a dash of impending drama is enough to keep me reading, because holy crap does that all sound like a disaster to put together but Jes pulls it off beautifully, and I want to read more of this crazy cocktail, please and thank you.
This is definitely a New Adult/Adult series though with the main characters being married with a lot of talk and hints of them being attracted to each other and Earnest especially wanting to do “married couple stuff”. It’s all kept perfectly clean but is more on the higher side of attraction and kissing, just as a heads up for anyone who might find that to be too much. I’m personally sensitive to stuff like this and was perfectly fine with it, so take that as you will.
A fast paced, fun story with a questionable but intriguing main character, a slow burn romance, and a lot of promise for me to like it more upon reread and once I read the rest of the Kristian Clark universe.

This was a fun, short read, verging more on rom com than spy thriller. The central conceit is that the president (while a candidate) entered a marriage of electoral convenience with a guy who is a super spy, part Scarlet Pimpernel and part The Man who was Thursday, and she hasn't worked this out. Their relationship chemistry was fun and drives the comprehensible part of the plot arc well, while remaining the right side of clean.
The world involves superpowers, parallel worlds and secret conspiracies. Faintly reminiscent of Fringe, which I liked, but noting our MC has done some rather dodgy stuff to get where he is. My suspension of disbelief neurons did occasionally have to be told to shut up and sit quietly but they're mostly OK now.
Main complaint: Ms Drew likes to interlink her impressively long skein of book series. There were some names dropped that were not explained. It didn't matter that much, but some of the motivation for the cloak and dagger stuff was obscure if (for example) you haven't read the Kristian Clark series.
