I was excited to review "The Daniel Plan" by pastor Rick Warren and Mark Hyman along with Daniel Amen. I had heard about pastor Warrens church and his weight loss group through various circles. When it came up for review I was waving my hand like a child in school to let people know I would be happy to review it. ( me, me , me ,me *waves hands frantically) Especially since I have been struggling with my weight loss for quite some time now.
Because I also struggle with my faith the first few chapters were a struggle for me and I ended up skipping over most of it. Don't judge me. I didn't start going to church until much later in life (2005) and even now I don't attend regularly. It's my choice. But, that's a whole different post not really meant for this website.
Prior to the book arrival I had checked out Amazon. I swore the release date was set for Dec 3. As of today the release date is set for Dec 22. I am not sure what the big change is. I checked out the Daniel Plan website and there is a ton of information there. The book states there will be an app and I think that will make things much easier because as it is the book does not provide a whole lot of structure.
There are section on faith and friendships. Why you need both to be successful in a weight loss plan. There is a section on exercise and food, which are obvious when following any weight loss plan. The Daniel Diet is mirrored after a clean eating plan. Organic meats , fruits and vegetables along with whole grains.
There are a few recipes. The meal plan is lackluster. That portion is the smallest portion of the book. I am a little disappointed in the book because it has SO much fluff that is basically the same spin of so many other weight loss plans out there. I felt the menus , recipes and meal plans should have had more of an expanded section than it did. I feel a lot of people are going to give up because they need more. There is not a whole lot of structure or guidance.
I'm hoping when the book actually launches the website and apps will be updated to make up for this.
Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher as part of a review program. The opinions I have expressed are my own. This is about self discovery and adding one more. A powerful approach when you choose getting healthy together. You'll be inspired to start the journey to transforming your life. The plan is well organized with 5 successful parts: Faith, Food, Fitness, Focus and Friends. I especially like the chapter on Change Your Brain, Change Your Health and my favorite passage is Renew Your Mind. I am finding that applying the concepts I've read daily are like applying daily rituals that bring good changes to my life inside and out. The personal testimonies are encouraging, as well as scripture and quotes. I find the recipes to be quite tasteful, too. The book is a blessing and a wonderful gift for my husband and I.
If you are ready to fully commit to a life changing way of eating, this can be a good way to go. But if you are struggling with will power or just trying to get your head around the idea of having to loose weight, this is a bit too intense in my opinion. This is a complete change in how most people eat. It requires a great deal of determination and willpower to overhaul everything about the way you eat. I am not saying the diet or plan is bad....it is pretty good but it is not for someone who is on the fence. You have to be ready and willing to make a huge commitment to change.
This is a one stop shop for anyone looking for the granddaddy of all new years resolutions. The authors show how one can improve one's life with the by concentrating on the following areas faith, food, fitness, focus, and friends. By concentrating on these five core issues you life will improve. But, we all know this, what this book gives is a detailed plan of attack to achieve success in these area.
The book, "The Daniel Plan" is not in the system. Finished the book, working on the study guide and DVD (soon to start the Plan). Lifestyle changes not a "diet"-not a temporary fix but a healthy plan bringing together Faith, Food, Fitness, Focus (brain) and Friends. This is a bible based plan but can be adapted as a spiritual plan as well. Well written, easy to read and understand and supported/developed by many big name doctors in various fields of health.
I really learned a lot about food and nutrition from this book. I like the five pronged approach as well. My only piece of constructive criticism would be that they reiterate that the Daniel plan is simple and easy to follow… I personally think that it's pretty intense changes for most people.
Pretty good and pretty much what I try to follow when I am being good. This book brings to light one more part if my life that I need to integrate biblical principles into more.
Excellent book to help all of us. I loved how it stressed that we work in community. I'm beginning a small group for this study at my house on January 9, 2014.
