On a sunny summer morning, nulls all over the country are attacked at the same time.
In Boulder, Allison "Lex" Luther barely gets her niece to safety. In Los Angeles, Scarlett Bernard is nearly shot in the back. It seems that a powerful enemy is unhappy with the Old World leaders' plans to form a government, and they've coordinated a strike against those rare individuals who can undo magic itself.
Now Lex, Scarlett, and their trusted friends have a plan to put these attackers on trial... but finding them won't be easy, and stopping them means leaving their own territories behind.
The California null and the Boulder boundary witch, along with allies old and new, will have to travel to Galena, Illinois, a small town near the Mississippi River that serves as an annual playground for vampires.
To protect nulls and safeguard the future of the Old World, Scarlett and Lex team up to fight a battle that's been years in the making.
But Galena has secrets of her own...
Old World War is the twelfth and final (for now) book in the Old World series.

I am usually a huge fan of pretty much any book by this author. The enormous number of really basic copyediting errors makes me think that stage was skipped with this book. A missing word, random misplaced punctuation, typo, or some other distracting error, usually so significant I had to reread the line twice to get past it, every few pages, really disrupted the flow of the book. I started reporting content errors but after half a chapter I started feeling like I should get paid.
The story was a fun crossover and I did like the setting. Character voices and descriptive passages were perhaps not quite the best of the series, but fine. Plotwise, there wasn't much for the main characters to figure out (Cranky employee Abby solved pretty much everything difficult overnight offstage.). There was a bit of a twist at the end, but not a lot of creative tactical or political maneuvering and no new discoveries as far as magical ability, which is a first. It was fun to hang with the familiar characters and always a laugh to see them through each others' viewpoints, but it felt more like a reunion episode than a continuation of the series.
Publication without copyediting is just insulting to those who purchase. I would rather pay more, wait longer, and get a polished book, especially from an author who normally sells fully finished works. I would absolutely give her next book a chance--hopefully this is a just a fluke since everything else has been so good.
Lex (boundary witch) and Scarlett (null) team up to defeat an evil vampire who is attacking and killing nulls.
I struggled.
I started the book in mid-September and I finished it in mid-November. There are some really great characters and the story isn't bad but too much of a good thing does not necessarily make a great thing and that's what this felt like.
Make the book smaller and it would have been great but there was just too much going on and it kind of got confusing.
This is the final Old World series (at least for now) and it starts with a bang! Scarlett is being shot, Lex's niece Charlie is also a target. Old foe ( is emerging and wants to kill nulls all over the world because it is a change that he doesn't want to be. So Scarlett, Lex, Jesse, Simon, and the rest of the gang all go to Galena, Illinois to right everything once again.
This is quite full of actions but at the same time some lovely moments (especially with Scarlett and Jesse) and surprising moments (). I love how both Scarlett's and Lex's characteristics shine in their own way; never blurred. I love seeing Lex partnering up with Jesse, or Jesse makes friends with Simon, or Scarlett exasperating Lex.
For now the big bad is truly finished. Dashiell and Maven get to set up their parliament. The people I care about live. AND THERE'S A WEDDING in the end of this book!
I was so disappointed by this book. I’m a big fan of the characters and stories for Lex and Scarlet and up until this book had zero complaints with the writing. The world building had always been great and the plots have been novel and intriguing twists on content that has been done many times before. This book’s ending with a wedding was overdone and underwhelming and the book as a whole felt rushed. Additionally, the writing quality was poor compared to all the other books, riddled with many spelling and grammatical errors that a line editor could have easily addressed. So much build up over more than 12 previous books went into this, so I was very sad after reading this one. I hope the author reissues the book with edits and possibly considers an alternate ending.

Story: 2 stars | Audible: 4 stars. This author is usually a hit or miss for me. 🤷🏻♀️ I didn’t find this story as engaging as I anticipated I would. Scarlet was annoying AF. I did enjoy Lex’s part of the story, & the Quinn situation wasn’t surprising at all.
This was a major let down. The book started out strong, picking up from the events laid out in that little novella/anthology-like book that Olson released several months back. All in all I just wasn’t impressed with this. Again it started out strongly with a full blown investment in Alex’s tunnel vision to help Charlie and keep her safe, then it morphed into something else entirely. After all of that, we didn’t get any real closure about Quinn and that relationship; how come Katia didn’t make an appearance?; dis will and sashi make an appearance at this wedding?; what exactly did they do to Shadow that she didn’t heal right away after the first major incident?; and. The list goes on and on. Really, where was Lily and how come there were no Lily scenes? What happened to Rhys and his family? What about Wyatt? I personally feel like this was just some excuse to wrap up this entire world so that Olson doesn’t have to bothered for a whole.
This was really disappointing. I love this series. I wish Lex had gotten her own final book and that the crossover was an independent 13th book.
I wasn't as enamored with the small town the book was set in as the author.
I was really really bothered by Quinn getting pushed to the side at the last minute to make way for Simon. If Lex had a final book that could have been fleshed out more.
Just wasn't my favorite ending.

It was great to have a crossover book between the Scarlet and Lex series! So great seeing these characters again for what seems likely to be the last time. A must read for fans of these two series. Wonderfully narrated on audio by the two narrators who read each of the original series. Well worth the Audible credit!
I have been a big fan of both of these two series that crossover in this book and I have read them all over the years. It was fun to finally put everyone from the Old World together in one book and have them all working towards the same goal.
Things have changed since the series started and Scarlett has grown and matured and is finally becoming the mature person that she has been capable to be. Yes, she still has some commitment fears, but is willing to address them and is starting to realize how much Jesse and Annie have brought to her life.
Then there is Lex. This is where I had a problem. I don't want to go into spoilers, and its going to be hard to say what I want to say without them. Let me just say that each book in the Lex series has Lex working towards a common goal with a certain partner. Then, there is finally some stability in that relationship. In THIS book, that character is missing. COMPLETELY. We get one or two mentions of them but absolutely NO page time. Then, at the end....seriously? A conversation from a hospital bed? That's it? No....just no.
Yes, the author can do whatever she wants. Absolutely. I've followed her through thick and thin, but this....it made no logical sense. Well, actually, that may be more like it. It made LOGICAL sense, but when have relationships ever been logical? I don't know. It didn't feel right. I'm not saying that the person who ends up benefiting from doesn't deserve it - in fact, that might be the only good thing but it just didn't feel....right. It felt completely forced.
Bottom line, this is apparently the ending of the two series and that does make me sad. I have honestly enjoyed both of the separate storylines and if she decides to keep going...well, I'll just keep reading.
I loved this whole series, but this book was a bit of a let down. I was always team Lex, I liked her better than Scarlet I must admit. I actually liked earlier books where the two heroines did not like each other. It was interesting to have two strong women both fighting for good, but not liking each other. I guess my biggest problem with this one was the many spelling and grammatical errors. It may have been the way the book was translated to the Kindle version, but that is a big pet peeve of mine. The story itself was ok, I still liked the earlier books better.
I love this world so much. All of the characters are so well developed at this point that even with a big break in reading the series, it was like coming home again.
This book (shocker) revolves around the brewing of an old world war. An attack is made on nulls in general and Scarlett in specific. This obviously upsets their world and sets off a chain that ends with a big gathering of sorts. Let’s call it a trial, but it’s almost like a convention/reunion/something better. Scarlett really gets beat up in this one, so that’s a little tough to read but she is a fighter and that also doesn’t stop her from running her wonderful mouth. The banter is strong with this one, and made more so by Lex teaming up with Simon.
Lex is obviously involved in null attacks because of her niece. She springs into action while simultaneously beating herself up for not somehow predicting this particular scenario. Turns out that some big bads from such installments like “killing Scarlett’s baby daddy” or “messing up Eli” come calling in the form of even worse daddy issues in the vampire community. The vampires are justifiably angry and decide to try out their new judgement system by trying these bad guys. To be fair to all involved, there’s not only a supernatural bad guy but also a human bad guy, complete with tactical training to rival Lex’s. This felt like more even odds, which also made me sit on the edge of my seat for most of this book. The battles are great, the banter is great, and we even get some much needed resolution in a few different areas. Overall, this book was a wonderful read and gave some nice closure to this series.
2.5 stars This book was so disappointing. Where to start... Scarlett was annoying as usual, with her dumb jokes and immaturity, but WTF is up with Lex? I feel like her character has regressed. She takes self-blame to a ridiculous level. Throughout the whole book, I was inwardly rolling my eyes at all her dramatics. Seriously, if someone she barely knew across the world did something and she didn't stop it she would be flogging herself, crying "it's all my fault!" Also, what happened to the cool, calm soldier? Is it her boundary magic affecting her psyche? This whole novel she goes off all half-cocked, reckless and with tunnel vision, not listening to those around her who try to tell her pertinent info, putting everyone around her at risk. And what's the thing with Simon? The poor guy deserves someone better, as does Quinn. As for Quinn, he had maybe a couple sentences in this book, that's all, and suddenly it's over between them? I get that he's probably going to turn human and go back to his daughter, (maybe pretending witness protection and great skin cream?) but the break up felt so out of the blue. Maybe he knew she was vacillating about Simon, but I don't blame him. I wish him well, since he deserves someone better than Lex. The ending felt rushed and unfinished. And just, unsatisfying.

Forgive me for keeping things vague, there is a ton to spoil as this is the last book in a long running series and I want to avoid as much of it as possible.
I started the Old World series ages ago and rabidly consumed each book as they were released. This one I hesitated on. My fear was that it would bring the series to a conclusion that would be bittersweet, and I was right.
Miss Olson has always had a knack for characters that leap off the page and plotlines that move at blistering paces while somehow giving time for the gravity of events to linger. I love her work, and this book is no different.
Her love for the city of Galena is obvious immediately and puts her cast of characters out of their element in ways that are both fun and unpredictable. The conclusion of the book goes in every direction but where you believe it will, yet seems inevitable once we get there.
Aside from the speed at which the overall objective of the novel is dealt with in the end, I would say it's another stellar entry into the series and could definitely be the final word on this world that I have been enthralled with for nearly a decade.
If it is over, I will miss it, though that's what repeat reads are for.
I've read all the other (thirteen?) novels in this world, plus whatever short stories and novellas I could get my hands on, so OF COURSE I was going to read this. I loved getting our two protagonists (and their friends) together, and as always I loved the dialog. We are now periodically calling "tactical pen!" around our house at semi-appropriate times. I did not so much love how much those protagonists got beat up on, especially Scarlett, who spent most of the book in a state where you weren't sure she should be able to stand up. And I missed Shadow, although I can see an argument that having her around makes things too easy for our heroes (me, I don't care, Shadow's too flipping delightful). Favorite quote: the excellent nerd compliment "Damn, you’re just like a hunky Wikipedia with legs, aren’t you?" (P.S. I hope that future readers get an edition that an edition that catches the handful of typos and oversights mine had on initial release.)
I loved Melissa Olson, and her Old World books are my favorite. Did this book have a number of typos? Yes, but I'm not easily bothered by that, so... (I'm guessing it was self-published, and if you read the Acknowledgements, you know she had a lot going on in her life. But, we did get the book in the end, so all #Winning, no #Whining over here.) It was still worth 4 stars because it was still classic Scarlett and Lex. I subtracted a star because I felt a little like we were left hanging on the unresolved "will they or won't they" Simon issue. I hope there is at least a novella to get some closure on that? Keeping my fingers crossed. Anywho, if you're a fan of these two series, you'll definitely enjoy this crossover event.
This book finally pulled the two main characters together into a wonderful ending. I've enjoyed each character, first "Lex", a death witch" the most but then "Scarlet". Each character grows on you throughout the series.
As I mentioned this book pulled their two lives even closer together and ended well.
I particularly like listening to these books as audible while driving.
Melissa Olsen in my opinion is a very gifted author. She is creative, writes well and her stories have a nice depth to them. Honestly I've read many books involving magic, etc and have always come back to her's due to the quality. I can only hope she will do more "Boundary Magic "books.
I have loved everything I’ve read & listened to in the old world universe.
That includes: Blood Sick “Sell-By Date”** (in Companion Pieces) Dead Spots Trail of Deadlines Hunter’s Trail Boundary Crossed “Malediction”** (in Companion Pieces) “Soft Spot”* Boundary Lines Boundary Born Midnight Curse Boundary Blood:** in Companion Pieces) The Lost Girls”** (in Companion Pieces) Blood Gamble l Shadow Hunt Powerless”** (in Companion Pieces) Nativity”** (in Companion Pieces) Born Magic: The Diary of Scarlett Bernard Boundary Broken The Cowboy”* Boundary Haunted Old World War
I look forward to more in this universe. I am especially fond of Scarlett, Jesse, Dashiell, Lex, Lily, Simon, Charlie, and John.
Old World War combines the two series set in the Old World and have their main characters, Lex and Scarlett, switch chapter pov. Overall it was entertaining to see everyone in the final story but by combining them some characters were sidelined like Quinn and Molly. I loved the entire story except for one part. It has good twists and action but a stupid love triangle snuck back in. It was a love triangle centering on Lex and I don't like what happened. It felt unnecessary and squeezed in at the last moment even though it was kind of mentioned in Boundary Haunted, plus the outcome was unemotional. They were both fun series and I'm glad I figured out there were crossovers so I got to experience the story in its entirety.
I like that Olson brought some of her characters back together again and it seemed a good finale for this stage if she chooses to go in another direction or with other characters. She switched gears on one of the love interests, which made sense after it was spelled out, but I was kind caught unawares. However, it has been a while since I read the last one so there may have been things I forgot or missed. The ending was a nice wrap up though.
I do have to mention I'm not sure she is even using an editor as I was distracted by constantly correctly sentences that either repeated or didn't have the necessary words to complete a sentence. If you don't want to hire an editor have a friend at least read it as these are simple corrections.
A five-star read that reads like a chef’s kiss. This is number six in the Boundary Magic series and it feels like a culmination, it has taken me weeks to write this review as I wasn’t ready to let the book go. It just got me really in the feels, and I really hope that some time soon we will come back and touch base with everyone, see how the plans are falling, as this one just knocked me to my knees, there is edge of your seat drama that will have you holding your breath as you read and then softer moments that you don’t expect that blow you away, with their compassion. As always Maven has been the one to surprise me, but she gave the extra this time as did they all.
I have loved these series since I read the first Scarlett book three months after it came out. I’ve followed every story since and the only reason I didn’t read this immediately is that I had read some of Olson’s blog and didn’t want it to end. This was great and it showed all of the character growth and all of the writer’s growth. It ended on a satisfying note and gathered up all of the necessary dangling threads but there’s still room for more if Olson gets to that point. If not, I enjoyed every book and every short story. Please read these books. They’re worth reading.

Old World War is the Sixth and final installment in author Melissa F. Olsen's Boundary Magic series. This is a book that combines two of the authors Boundary Magic series with Scarlett Bernard's series which also had six books. The story begins in Los Angeles where Scarlett and her bargest Shadow are under attack by unknown people. Scarlett believes the people to be skinners, a group of humans who hunt supernatural for sport and money.
I was really excited when I saw this book had both Scarlett and Lex but I found it disappointing. It could be that because it's been so long since I read their last books, I really don't remember what happened to them. I didn't even remember that Quinn had a daughter, which seemed to be a big issue here. I'm sad that Quinn and Lex broke up, just so she could be with Simon. Scarlett was right about the ending being anti-climatic. I am glad that she and Jesse finally got married though. I liked being able to see how Lex and Scarlett felt about each other in different moments.

I enjoyed this book, like I have all the Old World books, and it was a satisfying story unto itself.
The copyediting errors were pretty egregious, including a wrong name used twice that had me flipping around trying to figure out who “Adrienne” was. Another run at the copy should still be made and the online files updated.
It might not be the series wrap people want, but it was good enough that I can walk away satisfied—and really, how much more should I expect? Look forward to the next project by this author.
It didn't really take me a month and a half to read this book. It just took me a month and a half to get started reading this book. Knowing it was (for now) the final book in the Old World series, I didn't want to get to the end. It was well worth the wait! And though it brings closure to a lot of threads, I think there are still more adventures in store for Lex and Scarlett. I hope after Ms. Olson has had time to rest and reflect, she'll reward her fans with another book (hopefully another crossover book) in the Boundary Magic/Scarlett Bernard series.
This storyline was a great read, with lots of things happening with lots of familiar characters. It has a LOT of "moving parts" to keep straight - and sometimes I found myself challenged to remember who was the person talking (chapters alternate between Scarlett and Lex points of view - but that was part of the fun. I'm already looking forward to more books, even if it's gonna be a while before that happens, but I'm wanting to know "what happens next" for all of these folks!
I think this is my favorite book ever! Lex & Scarlett all in one book. Travelling, history, spooky staircases, some really snarky humor (OMG! Scarlett is just too funny in this book!)...Vampires, werewolves, boundary witches....oh my! What a way to bring both parts of the Old World together! I will be forever in love with Beau as well.
I give Melissa kudos for the best wedding favor of all time as well! Start from the beginning of the series with Scarlett, move over and read Lex's side and then read this one...Wowza!
A MUST READ for anyone into Urban Fantasy! Well done Melissa!
M. Olson created a wonderful blending of her two really likable heroines for a crossover piece that I would have liked to see go on and on for another several hundred pages. The two ladies are strong personalities - each contributing enough snark to make Spidey jealous. The challenges and the evil actors are great - quite "believable". I have to say that after following these two ladies through several books - all linked with excellent consistency - the final chapter of this book made me tear up. I wanted to give Melissa Olson a hug. Well done!
