The bestselling first edition of Essential Linguistics presented the basic concepts of linguistics in everyday language, and showed the connections between linguistic theory and classroom practice. David and Yvonne Freeman make the Second Edition even more valuable With examples, activities, and end-of-chapter applications that link linguistic theory and classroom practice, the Freemans show teachers how to use their new understandings of linguistics to help student learning. Essential Linguistics, Second Edition will be your go-to resource for all things linguistics, now better than ever.
I appreciated that there were frequently specific examples of how to apply the techniques that Freeman Freeman championed. The authors made it extremely clear that they were in favor of acquisition methods over learning methods. Sometimes it felt as if it was less of a guide to students and more of a platform to denounce learning methods. While I agree with them that acquisition methods are better for teaching a second language, I also see that there can be value in some portions of learning methods. I think it would have been helpful if the authors spent some time acknowledging that, analyzing what those helpful portions were, and giving specific advice about how to incorporate those portions into an acquisition oriented classroom.
