Rate this book
Something strange was in the mists of Fernhaven.

A mantle of mystery had closed in on Elizabeth Blackstone. An inexplicable sensation of being watched had stricken her ever since the accident that claimed her young son. Trapped in the depths of despair, she'd been experiencing gaps in her memory, hearing and seeing things that weren't there...feeling even more frightening things. Her once-loving husband, Paul, had become a grief-stricken stranger, who'd seemingly retreated from their marriage.

But it was an impromptu excursion to the luxury hotel in Fernhaven that proved the true test of their bond...

Paul was desperate to save his wife from the edge of despair or worse. Would his love be strong enough to overcome a sinister and inconceivable interloper?

Elizabeth and Paul had a wonderful marriage, until their son was killed. Now they've become polite strangers. Elizabeth wants a divorce, but Paul isn't ready to let go of their marriage yet, so he asks her for a last favour - come with him on a business trip to the just-refurbished hotel in Fernhaven, and help him charm clients to get a deal that'll be a big leap forward for his career, and he'll grant her the divorce. Paul is secretly hoping that getting away from their home and memories will help Elizabeth heal and save their marriage. But there's a sinister presence in Fernhaven, and it seems to be targeting Elizabeth. Is she going crazy and imagining things? Or is something paranormal happening?

I loved the idea of this, and generally really enjoy paranormal romance / suspense, but this fell a little flat for me. I've said many times that people in crisis do not make good romance heroes and heroines, and despite her seeming recovery from her depression and suicidal thoughts after her son's death, Elizabeth still didn't feel mentally healthy to me. I found her character cold and lifeless - which is understandable, given what she's gone through; the loss of a child is a tragedy that I cannot fully comprehend the magnitude of, and having watched my mother over the years I can see that it would make a part of your soul die - but doesn't make for a good romantic heroine.

Paul was more lifelike and easier for me to like, but without any sense of passion or life from Elizabeth, I couldn't work up any excitement for the romance between them.

That said, the mystery was quite interesting. 2.5 - 3 stars.

The bad people were really, really bad and the good people were all just misunderstood. Cookie-cutter paranormal romance.
