Just because it’s over between us, doesn’t mean we can’t be friends. My ex-husband and I still care for each other a lot, and we are determined to put our sweet little boy, Toby first.
Now we’ve moved into houses right next door to each other, with each of our new partners and their children. We’ve even knocked down the garden fence, so Toby can easily run between our homes.
But it seems not everyone is happy about this big, blended stepfamily. I try to ignore the viciously-worded note in the ‘new home’ card, the red pen scrawled through my divorce paperwork, and the day I find myself locked into my house, all the keys suddenly missing…
But I can’t pretend it’s all in my head when a false accusation is made against me that could destroy my life – and Toby’s – forever.
Someone doesn’t like what’s happening under these two neighbouring roofs.
What they don’t know is that they’re messing with the wrong person. And that hell hath no fury like the wife next door…

Very…interesting premise. How could this possibly go wrong?!?
Excellent pacing and smooth flow. Thorough character development. Just about everyone is a suspect. That can get irritating if it’s poorly handled; with this author, it actually drives the plot in fascinating ways.
I did not care for everyone ganging up on Jess. Other than the whole bruise thing, Jess makes mostly good decisions. If anything, it’s everyone else that’s gaslighting and manipulating her.
There’s a ton of tension and general craziness in this one—without being over the top.
I do think (spoiler) should have ended up with (spoiler). They were perfect together, so it was super awkward that the writer suddenly made that…not a thing. Overall, the conclusion is sufficient and well-executed.
Ready to be surprised and captivated by Halsall’s new book?
In the wife next door we meet Jess who has just moved in with her new partner, her son and his daughter. Their neighbors is her previous husband and his new family. They are all friends and hope their new living arrangements will benefit them all. Jess feels like life is perfect, until she finds a threatening letter. That is just the start of more strange events that makes her feel like someone’s out to get her.
The book has a perfect number of suspects that might be out to destroy her life. I sometimes felt like the story unfolded too rapidly, there was no time to catch up or let the anticipation build. First Jess is happy and thinks all is well, but after just one chapter it’s all going downhill so fast that it’s hard to keep up. The author creates a suspenseful plot where you realize that someone has a plan to destroy her family. There are many possible culprits, and Jess suspects everyone. When she sees bruises on her son, her paranoia increases.
The reader is also confused by it all. I also suspected everyone and even started to wonder if Jess had some mental health issues, so the book kept me guessing which I love. It was well-written, but I missed feeling more connected to Jess. It’s good that you can read a book in one sitting, but I didn’t get to know her personality and therefore it wasn’t easy to care about what happened to her or her family.
The twist was good and everything that happened was explained. I liked that we got all the facts in the last chapter from the culprits POV. My initial reaction from the first chapters, where everything seemed to good to be true and naive, made more sense after the ending.
Overall a decent psychological thriller. It had all the typical ingredients of the genre, but I found it somewhat lacking in character building and development. It was a lot of black and white thinking, which is understandable when you’re under duress, but I would have loved if the characters weren’t so judgmental of Jess, not believing in anything she said. Even If you get some of it explained later.
I really enjoy this author's work - always a tense intriguing psychological thriller....however if i had to choose I would say this is my favourite so far Seriously, what can go wrong? A recently divorced couple...both with new partners....and one of the couples just happens to be moving in next door to the other,a recipe for harmony?.of course it's anything but and this book has 2 of my favourite things....new neighbours and strong, very strong love to hate characters - it may not be a recipe for a happy life for them all but it is a recipe for a fine book for us If for one minute anyone thought this was going to be one extended blissful family they are more than wrong....and when the accusations start, cruel and nasty ones and people's hidden agendas come to the fore anything could and does happen I mentioned it is tense.that's probably an understatement as it had me shouting and furious at one character....and as for the ending, well it was superb Would make a brilliant Netflix series,it has all the ingredients needed and as always from this author written so well Brilliant
Jess and Rob's marriage ends, but they got a son out of the deal. They remain besties. Both find new partners. Jess finds Ben and his spoiled rotten daughter. Rob finds Carol and her frail young son. In the best interest of Jess, oops I mean their son, the soon to divorce couple decide to become next door neighbors. Now Jess, Ben, Rob, and Carol along with 3 kids become one big happy blended family. Happy happy joy joy. Knuckleheads. This doesn't even last one week. It starts out as a nasty note in a housewarming card. Bad things escalate. All directed at Jess. No one believes her, poor dear. She has self doubt. I wouldn't. She starts to blame the others. I would. Even her mother. I wouldn't. Jess did nothing to deserve what befell her. Besides her pipe dream of this goofy set-up, she's not bad people. On the flip, Jess didn't do what I thought to be in our, oops I mean her best interest from the get go. How could Jess let this get so out of hand? I would have called the cops the moment I read that card. And as for my beloved blended family to diss my concerns. Happy happy joy joy this, jerks. A small but worthy group of culprits to choose from. Predictable as to the who and to the why. A little surprise at the end. I only liked Jess. And that's okay. There's no pet to worry about. Thankfully. Frustratingly fun because I would have handled this whole situation in an entirely different way. Like a real girl. Starting with the living arrangements. Therefore there would be no story to tell. And thats why I read books and don't write them.
I had enjoyed Rona Halsall's book, 'The Ex-Boyfriend' so couldn't wait for this. The plot of The Wife Next Door screams 'recipe for disaster!' I'm sorry, on what planet does a divorced couple think it's a good idea to move into houses next door to each other?! Halsall does a solid job of explaining why the family does it, but I just don't get it. That said, once I let go of that issue, I was invested and was swept along with the plot happily. It is fast paced, with creepy and chilling vibes throughout. Aside from my issue with the main premise, the characters are mostly likeable and I rooted for them. The main selling point for this book has to be that ending though. I have come to expect shockers from this author after reading this, it is clever! An enjoyable read.
What would it be like to move with your new significant other next door to your ex and his new lady?
Holy plot twists! This book started off slow and took awhile to lay the groundwork but once it picked up it got better. Just when I thought I knew where it was going the book shifted and I was shook. If you’re looking for an unpredictable thriller this is it!
The Wife Next Door is available October 12,2022.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
So Rona does not disappoint again with her latest thriller. This time we follow a blended family or friendly exes who decide for the sake of their child to move in next door to each other so they can share parenting. What should have been idilic turns into a nightmare for the ex wife who starts to think someone really wants her gone and will go to any lengths to make that happen even taking everything and everyone she loves away from her but is the truth even darker than she can imagine. I can’t spoil this one for you guys but it’s not to be missed
Just because it's over between us, doesn't mean we can't be friends. My ex-husband and I still care for each other, and we are determined to put our sweet little boy, Toby first. Now we've moved into houses next door to each other, with each of our new partners and children. We've even knocked down the garden fence, so Toby can easily run between our homes. But it seems not everybody is happy about the big, blended stepfamily. I try to ignore the viciously worded note in the "new home" card, the red pen scrawled through my divorce paperwork, and the day I find myself locked into of my house, all the keys suddenly missing. Things start to go wrong from the moment Jess and her ex-husband move in next door to each other. Things are disappearing or being moved. The story starts off very slowly, giving us a bit of backstory. Some of the characters I liked, others, I didn't like at all. Rona Halsall has a way of leading you down the garden path and makes you think you're on the right track, only to find you were on the wrong path all along. This is a gripping domestic thriller. My only criticism is that it seemed to end abruptly, so I took half a star off.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author #RonaHalsall for my ARC of #TheWifeNextDoor in exchange for an honest review.
As the description states - ‘Two Houses. Two front doors. One family’ What could possibly go wrong!
When a couple divorce, they want to make sure their child isn’t affected by it. Both have new partners with children of their own and they buy 2 houses next door to each other so that they can continue to help each other out.
All goes well until strange things start to happen. Gradually fallings-out occur and everyone doubts each other.
This is an excellent psychological thriller. My heart was pounding through the book and my nerves were in shreds! It starts off quite slowly and the pace gradually builds up. As for the ending - all I’m going to say is superb! This is one book that I couldn’t put down.
My thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
If you are looking for a book that will keep you on your toes, Rona Halsall's The Wife Next Door is that story. With Halsall's twisty writing you will never know who is doing what or who is guilty. This book is almost impossible to put down once you start reading it. Featuring suspense and hard to love characters, Halsall's new book is a brainteaser.
Synopsis: A couple is getting divorced. Both parties have amicably moved on in life and found other partners. Everyone involved seems to get along well. In fact, they all become close "friends". For the children's convenience, both couples agree to move and live next door to one another. (Yes, you read that right!) They all "think" this is a great idea. What could possibly happen?
The Wife Next Door is a shocking mystery that has brilliant plot twists. To fully enjoy this curvy ride, one must suspend their belief and roll with the story. While reading the book, I felt my mouth drop open several times. To be honest, I wanted to shake the main character and tell her to "Wake Up and Smell the Coffee!" Lol! The plot is so intriguing, it's crazy!
The Wife Next Door by Rona Halsall is available on October 12th. (4.25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫)
Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture, for sharing this thrilling novel with me. Your kindness is appreciated!
Jess and Rob have separated after 11 years of marriage, they have one son Toby. It was an amicable separation and want to stay friends for the sake of their son. They both now have new partners and for some insane reason they decide to move next door to each other, even knocking down the garden fence so they can do things together. Things can’t go wrong, can it? Thank you Netgalley and Bookoutre, for Rona Halsall ‘s latest offering. Wow this story is messed up. Why would you want to move next door to you Ex? This is another great story from the author. I would say it is her best novel to date. This is an intense, twisty thriller that I virtually kept reading into the early hours of the morning. The protagonist Jess I thought was a bit naïve and I would go the hell out of there after being held by the Police and gone away. I wouldn’t have stayed. This is a highly entertaining read. 5 stars from me.
Jess has just moved in with her new partner, her son and his daughter. It's a strange set up as she has moved next door to her ex husband and his new partner.
Everything seems to be running smoothly for Jess until she receives a new home card with a viscous message. This is just the start of strange events that makes her think someone is out to get her.
This was a great page turner, full of suspense and twists.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for an honest review.
This book was a let down for me. I knew I'd have to suspend disbelief when I read the description (A divorced couple moving next door to each other with their new partner's to better co-parent when the ex-wife starts receiving threats). I admit the plot is ludicrous but I was intrigued.
However, I didn't expect it to be this unbelievable: Getting locked in your own house? Dismissing bruises on your only child? Checking your voicemail when someone's been stabbed? Not calling the police after repeated threats? Then we're gonna go after said stabber but need to discuss whether we're covered on the car's insurance plan? I could go on and on. The sequence of events of Scary Movie in an LOL this is so stupid kind of way.
I really wasn't invested in any of these characters and didn't like Jess (the narrator). The plot is flat and very nonsensical. I also felt that the storyline was super obvious. It takes away from the reading experience when you figure it out before you even know what has happened!
Jess and Rob have an amicable divorce. Parents to a son named Toby, one of the decisions they make is to move next-door to each other, although each of them now have new partners. What could possibly go wrong?
However, for Jess things begin to go downhill - fast. Strange things begin happening, and in quick succession. Just as Jess thought her feet were on solid ground, she learns that nothing further than that could be going on. Of course she begins to wonder if it because she is now living next door to her ex-husband. Someone is not happy about the living arrangements and that fact is patently clear.
In this utterly tense psychological thriller, it should come to no surprise that something was going to go wrong. Then to consider everyone involved in the story, there was no doubt that someone living in one of the two houses is guilty of whatever is happening to Jess. That fact increased the tension even more. While reading this book I found myself pointing my finger at one person after another. This latest book by Rona Halsall was an exciting ride from the very first page until the jaw dropping ending.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
As the description states, “ Two houses. Two front doors. One family. Nothing can possibly go wrong…
Today we move into our new houses, right next door to each other. My ex-husband and me. He’s with someone else. So am I. Now I can’t help but think someone doesn’t like what’s happening under our two roofs. Or perhaps someone doesn’t like there being a wife next door…
What they don’t know is that they’re messing with the wrong person…”
Great hook, but there were multiple scenarios where the suspension of disbelief made the storyline ridiculous:
>” They’re messing with the wrong person”….only in that she’s a stupid person. Early on the reader quickly learns the psychological suspense is based on gaslighting techniques that any normal person would address. The protagonist does not address the happenings logically. Instead, she becomes manic and emotional and accuses everyone, thus losing credibility.
>”We’re making sure we’re not like every other separating couple. We know we will make it work.” Is she trying to convince herself? 😳
> They even knocked down the fences between the houses, so there is absolutely NO privacy. They walk into each other’s houses; again no privacy, no boundaries. This is how they are going to make it work? 😳
On the positive side, it was compelling, even with all the infuriating poor judgement calls of the protagonist. I read it it one sitting so the pacing was fast and furious! The climax was electrifying! Even after the mystery of who was gaslighting whom was revealed, there was a shocking twist in the denouement and the final resolution was outstanding! (The protagonist finally used her gray matter and did something intelligent.)
I like to read about strong women. These two women are portrayed as weak and easily manipulated and duped. That fact is bothersome and is reflected in a lower rating. I acknowledge my bias.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
“We’re like the bloody Four Musketeers aren’t we, in this new venture of ours. You, me, Carol and Rob. All for one and one for all.”
Let renowned psychological thriller author Rona Halsall sweep you away to the Isle of Man as she explores whether an amicable divorce is possible for Rob and Jess. You’ll head to a new housing estate in Peel, a small fishing town on the west coast of the Isle of Man, an island in the middle of the Irish Sea where ‘blending’ takes on a whole new meaning! You’ll be shocked to discover that Rob and Jess move in next door to each other … with their new partners and children. You snickered, didn’t you?! Yes, me, too. Get comfortable, grab a glass of Rioja, and see how compatible and wise this move turns out to be!
“We’re going to be one family, living in two houses.”
I loved the constant friction, the mysteries, the twists … all of it! What a great book. I was gasping, giggling, and on the edge of my seat for most of this compelling read.
You need this book.
I was gifted this advance copy by Bookouture and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
Two houses. Two front doors. One family. And we’re going to make it work. Nothing can possibly go wrong. Today we move into our new houses, right next door to each other. My ex-husband and me. He’s with someone else. So am I.
Well this definitely sets up the storyline for a very complicated family situation. Can this possibly work or will forces be against them? I think it would be much less entertaining for all of us if this goes very smoothly, we all need a few bumps along the way to keep us engaged and entertained. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will be on the look out for more of this authors work.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of the book, all opinions are my own.
The Wife Next Door by Rona Halsall What brilliant writing! I mean … what could go wrong when a divorced couple decide to live next door to each other with their new partners? HA! Ummmm, everything! There was suspense, drama, intrigue, terror, and tons of psychological warfare. The plot was fantastic, and kept me engage throughout the entirety of the book. It was very well written, and just flowed. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys a good thriller. Certainly recommended! Many thanks to Rona Halsall, NetGalley, and Bookouture for the advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is my first read by this author. I found the story premise intriguing- a divorced couple who want to coparent their son and get along so well they buy houses next door to each other? What could go wrong?
Turns out, a lot. And not just within the story. I found the writing to be mediocre at best. The main character, Jess, is portrayed as weak and dependent. Now I get that she is being gaslit through much of the story, but when things are happening that she clearly knows are happening, she never even attempts to find out what is going on.
I found the twist to be fairly predictable and even the final epulogue to be completely unbelievable. Honestly it took me longer to get through this book than it should have just because I never felt really invested in the story or cared what happened to the characters.
I received an advanced reader copy from NetGalley and Bookoutoure and am giving my honest review.
Unfortunately this author's books and I are not a good pairing and this read was no exception.
Having a Kindle Unlimited subscription, I decided to give this book a go about an ideal break-up. Is there such a thing?
Rob and Jess split up but are not officially divorced because she's astonishingly posted paperwork for finalizing the split that never arrives at the solicitors and more astonishingly doesn’t follow up. He has moved on with Carol, a client of Jess' mum. They are already planning their wedding. They move in next door to Jess and her new love interest Ben and the fence between the two properties is torn down.Strange things start to happen. Nasty notes get left in Jess' home. Mugs are smashed. A tyre slashed,. Keys missing etc...etc.
The characters were all unlikeable and colourless. Add to this ridiculous drama and a weak ending and you reach my rating of 2 stars.
Am I on the same planet as the other reviewers, at least on the top page? I found it silly and unconvincing. The authorities didn't pick up the clues. The protagonists for some reason didn't communicate. What was the point of having a Turkish ex? A sheer red herring, but one that didn't generate tension. How come the ex-husband found a useful entanglement? The only slight relief was the untypical setting. Pity motorcycles couldn't have been worked in.
A smart psychological thriller that will have you turning the pages way into the night. I really enjoy Rona’s tense tales, I can’t wait to read more. Jess and Rob are more friends than husband and wife and decide to divorce. But for the sake of their young son Toby, they come up with a crazy idea. Buy houses next door to each other and move in. So with their current partners and children they become very close neighbours. To make it easier for Toby to run between the homes they remove the dividing fence. But it very quickly becomes apparent that not everyone is happy with the arrangement. Nasty notes appear and weird things happen. Soon everything is a mess and then the truth is revealed and the sinister exposed. An intriguing, entertaining book with everyone being suspicious, you can not trust anyone and with great characters driving the plot, it all makes for a compelling read. Lots of clever twists, a wicked storyline, an insane atmosphere and a cast of shocking misfits. Packed with a good pace, a great build up and an unexpected ending, it’s definitely one to add to your list if you’re a fan of the genre. An unpredictable thriller.
Thank you NetGalley for my proof copy! The book will be available from 12 October.
I wanted to read this book as soon as I read the premise. I had to see how this all would work out.
The idea of moving right next to your ex-husband and both with new partners was interesting to say the least. What could possibly go wrong?
I was very furious at some of the characters and felt like the story was dragging at the beginning. But it picked up its pace pretty fast and the story started unfolding properly.
I can’t say anything too much, as I really don’t want to give any spoilers and this is the type of book I would recommend going blond into.
There are lots of twists and turns and I didn’t guess who the culprit was. Perfect for anyone looking for a light thriller!
EEK. Ugh. This was quite frankly, a big mess. 😬 I understand that it’s a thriller and the goal is to execute surprises and twists, but there was just way too much happening here. I didn’t even find the “twist” believable. The end was rushed, it was a jumble of trying to shove in explanations for everything to make it all sound “plausible”… which it was not. The Wife Next Door, aka- the book that will frame every single character as the “bad guy”, use confusion as suspense, and fall flat in the end. While it was enjoyed by many, it’s a no for me. This book dragged me around 100 corners that all led to nothing in the middle of nowhere. 🤷🏻♀️ it was a quick read, at least.
Jess and Rob aren’t your typical divorcing couple. Their split was a mutual decision, and both moved on to new relationships. Hoping to make these big changes a little easier for their son to adapt to, they decided—along with new partners Ben and Carol and their respective children—to buy a pair of houses and live next door to one another. Everything seems perfect, until Jess receives an ominous message. When unsettling things begin to happen, Jess feels targeted… but by whom, and why?
This was almost a five star, highly recommended read for me. (More on that later.) The beginning of the story perfectly captures how optimistic Jess feels about the future, and what she hopes life will be like now that they’ve successfully embarked on blending their three families. Her inner dialogue about this is self-congratulatory and somewhat smug at times, but (thankfully) it was a tiny segment of the opening chapter and ended before Jess came off as an unlikable character.
The feel-good part of the story didn’t last much longer. Hours after they move in, Jess received a threatening message in a card (which mysteriously disappeared before she could show it to Ben), and she was hurt when she discovered Ben, Rob, and Carol decided (without her input) to take down the fence between the two houses. Things continued to go downhill from there, and Jess became increasingly suspicious of everyone around her.
This was my favorite part of the book—all those little things that seemed to have reasonable explanations kept happening, and I was heavily invested in trying to figure out who did it. I’d go back and reread the chapter (more than once, at times) to try to pinpoint who had the opportunity, and who was most likely to have been the culprit based on previous conversations and interactions with Jess. The closer I got to the end, the more invested I was, and when the Big Reveal came I was stunned—I’d considered every angle (I thought), but that one never occurred to me. The immediate aftermath of the Big Reveal was every bit as satisfying, especially one well-deserved moment of comeuppance for the culprit!
If the book had ended shortly after these events took place, I’d have given it 5 stars and tagged it as highly recommended… but it didn’t. The final chapter shifts perspective, with the Villain briefly taking over the narrative, and all the unanswered questions are given answers. Now, ordinarily, this is exactly the kind of thing I want to happen. Knowing who did it isn’t enough; I want to know why, as well.
Unfortunately, even though the answers were satisfying, the situation that led to them fell completely flat for me.
The setup felt contrived right from the start. All the mental gymnastics I’d gone through earlier trying to figure out the culprit’s identity were no longer necessary. I knew what was going on the instant the setup was introduced. All the mystery, nuance, and clever distractions that were such a treat for 99% of the book were suddenly, inexplicably gone. I was horribly disappointed. If I’d had a physical copy of the book in my hand, rather than my tablet, I’d have chucked it across the room in disgust. I had to content myself with raving to an empty room about convenient plot points and characters doing stupid things that didn’t make a lick of sense.
Given this strong reaction, and despite how much I loved the rest of the book, a three star rating is all I can give.
That said, I have a feeling most people will strongly disagree with my thoughts about the final chapter. Please bear that in mind if you’re considering reading this book. I loved 99% of it, so my dislike of the final 1% shouldn’t be given any undue emphasis.
I received an advance reading copy of this book courtesy of Bookouture via Netgalley.
This one left a burning in my gut that wasn't just acid. From the start it was a bit of a mystery. The prologue had no names so all that was known was it was a woman in danger. The living arrangement was bizarre for me. The calm just friends split that decide to live right next door to each other for the sake of their son? I don't see it. All the pet peeves and strain would've been already there with he whole love to hate scale.
Ben's hands off reaction annoyed me. But with how everyone else was it did point in the direction of her being the one that was losing it, perhaps with a mental illness. Ruby was a nightmare. If not her I thought for a while the mother since she's the crying shoulder and clearly wanted them back together. Rob blindsided me until the end with how supportive with Carol he was.
I didn't like Toby or Mo being hurt. I'm not sure about the social services, although the living with his father thing...he's right next door. I did like how close the survivors became and that it was a happy ending for all but one.

Picture this: You're recently divorced, you now live right next door to your ex-husband and his new wife, and you're giving this whole blended stepfamily thing a try. What could go wrong, right?
Turns out, A LOT could go wrong! In Rona Halsall's The Wife Next Door, what starts as an ideal setup turns scary when a note appears, keys go missing, and a false accusation is brought into the mix.
I guess some things are just too good to be true...
- Okay, I LOVED this one! Talk about an unpredictable thriller that you just can't put down!! It had so many twists and turns, I really did not know what was going to happen next. I will definitely be picking up a physical copy of this one - and reading more from Halsall!

Jess and her ex have moved next to each other with their new respective partners. Not the most normal set up but this is for them to work as blending their extended family.
This is a book which is gripping from the start. It's quick-paced.
Adding in the back story helps to add to the story. So why when moved into this has Jess received a threatening note? Who has sent this and why. Jess keeps having things happen to her and now people are not believing her is she going crazy? You get entrapped reading wanting to know what is happening next. The ending well wow. A must-read to keep you on your toes. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC
