Corrie ten Boom and her family were Christians who were active in social work in their home town of Haarlem, the Netherlands. During the Nazi occupation, they chose to act out their faith through peaceful resistance to the Nazis by active participation in the Dutch underground. They were hiding, feeding and transporting Jews and underground members hunted by the Gestapo out of the country. It is estimated they were able to save the lives of 800 Jews, in addition to protecting underground workers.
On Feb. 28, 1944, they were betrayed and Corrie and several relatives were arrested. The four Jews and two underground workers in the house at the time of the arrest were not located by the Nazis and were extricated by the underground 47 hours after they fled to the tiny hiding place (located in Corrie's room).
The ten Boom family members were separated and transferred to concentration camps. Corrie was allowed to stay with her precious sister, Betsy. Corrie's father (Casper), her sister (Betsy) and one grandchild (Kik) perished. Corrie was released in December of 1944.
These acts of heroism and sacrifice became the foundation for Corrie ten Boom's global writing and speaking career which began after she was released.
Ten Boom has received numerous awards for her writing and speaking. Notably, she was honored by the State of Israel for her work in aid of the Jewish people by being invited to plant a tree in the famous Avenue of the Righteous Gentiles, at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum, near Jerusalem. She was also knighted by the Queen of the Netherlands in recognition of her work during the war, and a museum in the Dutch city of Haarlem is dedicated to her and her family.
Another wonderful book filled with the humble godly wisdom of Corrie ten Boom. Her insight and words of advice are as much needed now as they were then.
Love Corrie’s words and encouragement. I read it through like a normal book, but would be great as an audiobook or even a devo. God is still using her for His glory!!
Such a wonderful book! It’s just radiates truth, humility and love of God in the face of so many trials. Would make a great devotional for a month and is really great for breaking down important tenants of Christianity. I loved it, very convicting and and simple and full of truth. I’m in awe of Corries love for Christ and full surrender to him and his will, and more in awe of the beauty of the gospel and how it shines through her life and works. Definitely a must read! 9.5/10
I bought this book at yard sale. I read this book for a library book club whose theme was "spirituality," and because I needed a short book to read before the day of the book club. But what a treasure I encountered. This short book contains such deep themes. It is truly a treatise of, "Not I But Christ." every chapter speaks of how Christ must increase and we must decrease. One of my favorite passages is this," I do not believe it is right to try to identify with a person who is in danger of perishing in need or in sin. They can infect and break us. And it is not necessary. God does not ask this of us." page 98. How true. The problem is sin not a dysfunctional lifestyle. There is a great chapter about the dangers of the occult. I am flabbergasted by the number of so-called Christians who read Harry Potter books. What????? Those people need to read this book. Better yet read their Bible. II Corinthians 6:15 "What concord hath Christ with Belial?" is among the many warnings to flee witchcraft. Open the treasure chest of this book to understand many Bible concepts.
This book is a collection of Corrie's experience relationship with God. Mostly she wrote this book behind a bar, this is her letter to the world about how we should see God and how important His presence into our life.
This took me a long time to get through, mostly because it was written for a different generations. While the truths she shares is timeless, the writing was less palatable, in my opinion.
Corrie Ten Boon went through so much in a concentration camp. It is amazing that anyone could even survive. Even after all she went through, she forgave, just as Christ forgives. It was an amazing book!
