Osmemics: A Linguistics Novel
Terry is a linguist studying an ancient language on a distant planet. In her daily search for anything to break up the monotony, she accidentally breaks her ankle and hits her head. When she comes to, she is being cared for by the local beings that they had all assumed were low intelligence animals. But she meets their doctor, sees their village and comes to befriend them. Her scientific mind and curious nature sets her on a new learning to communicate and live in harmony with the local beings.

what a lovely book! i feel like it takes place in some sort of socialist or anarcho something space utopia, this is a first contact scenario where much of the book is about how to communicate with extra terrestrial sapients the worldbuilding is really interesting. it feels like its part of a greater milieu and i am excited to read the next book by this author. i dont expect we will visit these characters or this neat litttle planet again. theres some tiny archaeology in here, and the plot is really straightforward. not one single contact warning at all its a quick, fun read do check it out!
