Beck Sisters #2

The Suite Spot

Rate this book
" Trish Doller's The Suite Spot is a charming romance novel about taking a chance on a new life and a new love.

Rachel Beck has hit a brick wall. She's a single mom, still living at home and trying to keep a dying relationship alive. Aside from her daughter, the one bright light in Rachel's life is her job as the night reservations manager at a luxury hotel in Miami Beach—until the night she is fired for something she didn't do.

On impulse, Rachel inquires about a management position at a brewery hotel on an island in Lake Erie called Kelleys Island. When she's offered the job, Rachel packs up her daughter and makes the cross country move.

What she finds on Kelleys Island is Mason, a handsome, moody man who knows everything about brewing beer and nothing about running a hotel. Especially one that's barely more than foundation and studs. It's not the job Rachel was looking for, but Mason offers her a chance to help build a hotel—and rebuild her own life—from the ground up. This is amazing!

I adored Anna and Keane’s adventurous, heart wrenching, second chance story on Float Plan! Trish Doller knows how to pull our heart strings by crafting genuine, tear jerker, angsty, emotional couple stories who deserve their second chances to catch their own happiness. As soon as I see the Beck Sisters definition, without looking at title and plot, I just clicked the request button on NG to wish I could get my arc copy!

I can honestly say: I loved this book more than the first installment! It has sentimental approach to sunshine meets the grump and friends to lovers troupe. Both Mason and Rachel are likable character you can be easily invested in. Little Maisie is also pocketful of sunshine who puts big smiles on our faces with her smart and entertaining comments!

We’re already introduced to Rachel: the responsible, single mother, planner, a loyal sister who is afraid of taking much risk, still living with her mother, not leaving her comfort zone as she wishes the things can magically change in her life; her four years old daughter’s father Brian may change and turn into a responsible father or she can be promoted from desk job at night shift at hotel and start investing on her own hotel project!

But none of them happens till things get worse and she finally sees she’s stuck in this life if she won’t be brave enough to make radical changes!

But when she’s get harassed by wealthy, old man sleuth at her workspace and instead of filing complaint, finding herself get sacked from the job she’s worked for years, this is the first wake up call informs her : she’s following wrong career steps.

Her long time lover-friend-father of daughter Brian has no intention to be proper father to their child.

She finally gathers her courage to inquire a management position job an a brewery hotel on Kelley Islands/ Ohio even though she has hesitations to move from Florida, leaving her old life and mother behind. The owner of the hotel she talks on the phone seems like uptight, reserved, grumpy guy but surprisingly he offers her the job.

When she packs her things, riding on her car with little daughter for long drive, she doesn’t guess what kind of situation she’s getting into. Because as soon as she arrives to the island and meets the charming and emotionally lost hotel owner Mason, she also realizes the hotel is in construction and Mason needs a person who have brilliant ideas to design a homely place from the scratch.

Should she go back to hometown without thinking any further or should she give this brooding, broken hearted man another chance? There’s a risk to attract to her own boss but she’s too professional not to mix business and pleasure, right?

This is lovely, heartfelt, touching, sentimental second chances story I truly enjoyed and I highly recommend!

Special thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for sharing this digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest thoughts.

I’m afraid my experience with The Suite Spot was a touch more sour than I’d have liked.

I just finished this and, while it had some genuinely cute moments, to be honest with you I was just a little … bored. It felt a bit like being at a restaurant and anticipating a decadent dessert, only to have the waiter bring me a plate of saltines. *sad face* Not dissing those reliable little salty squares of goodness, but they don’t quite compare to sweet, yummy chocolate lava cake, right?

Rachel Beck is a single mom to young daughter, Maisie, living with her mom and working for an upscale hotel in Miami Beach, Florida, until she gets unfairly fired. When an opportunity arises to manage a brewery hotel on Kelleys Island on Lake Erie, she and Maisie make the big move, leaving behind her man-child boyfriend/baby daddy, Brian, and her mom. In her new home, she meets the hotel owner, Mason, who comes off guarded and grumpy for reasons the reader finds out later. It’s pretty run-of-the-mill rom-com, Hallmark movie stuff … just with a little dirty talk and a couple “hungry” *cough, horny, cough* adults.

Rachel was nice, Maisie was sweet, the Kelley’s Island community members were fun, and Mason was an honorable, supportive man/boss. Everything was just TOO … perfect. Even the requisite rom-com “trouble comes to paradise” moment was remedied in blink-and-you'll-miss-it speed, and the ending felt so abrupt.

I liked it well enough, but it lacked the zing I hoped for. Perhaps those who met Rachel in the previous book of the series, The Float Plan, felt more invested in her as a character. I just didn’t connect much with her or Mason, though they did grow on me. The best characters were minimally seen side characters like yoga instructor, Avery, and Rachel’s sister, Anna, and Anna’s boyfriend, Keane.

Having said ALL that, much of the problem is that I listened to this on audiobook while reading along on my Kindle, and the narrator’s voicing of Mason just made him sound too robotic and stiff to be very likable as a love interest. Perhaps if I’d only read this, I would’ve imagined his dynamic with Rachel differently, so perhaps print is the way to go with this one?

Bottom line: The writing and humor is pretty cute, and if you like slightly spicy, minimal drama rom-coms with a grumpy/sunshine trope, this might hit the spot for you!

★★★

Thanks to St. Martin’s Press, NetGalley, and author Trish Doller for this ARC. I’ve given my opinions freely and honestly. This is now available.

It’s Q&A time!

Q: What’s this romance about?
A: Rachel, a 28-year-old single mom from Miami, loses her job as a boutique hotel concierge and moves to a tiny Lake Erie island in Ohio to help a stranger open a brewery-themed glamping hotel. Naturally the stranger is a moody, handsome, sorta-available man with a past.

Q: Since The Suite Spot is noted as “Beck Sisters #2,” do you have to read “Beck Sisters #1” (Float Plan) first?
A: Nope! I have read Float Plan (and recommend it), but this is truly Rachel’s story and therefore functions as a stand-alone.

Q: Is it any good?
A: It’s truly enjoyable! Rachel is a character that’s easy to root for, and the writing is very engaging. I never lost interest and sailed quickly through the entire thing in a day.

Q: What’s the steam level?
A: Medium-low. There are adult situations, but they’re PG-13-ish.

Q: How’s the audiobook?
A: I loved it! Narrator Sarah Naughton does an excellent job voicing all the characters and accents. She even manages to pull off a toddler without being annoying.

Q: So why not 5 stars?
A: The entire plot-line regarding the opening of the brewery/hotel is utterly unbelievable. Like really eye-roll-worthy. Also, a male boss shagging his female employee doesn’t feel all that comfortable in this day and age. Workplace romances are gonna happen, but there will always be a little ickiness when the objects of affection are a superior and subordinate. Eww.

My thanks to the author and Macmillan Audio for the gifted review copy. The Suite Spot is now available!

“When I’m with you, I remember what it feels like to be happy and anyone with eyes is bound to notice.”

I remember finding Rachel a bit obnoxious when she was first introduced from Anna's POV. Hence, frankly speaking, I never intended to continue this series as soon as I know her book is coming out.

Well, I guess this is where perspective comes to play because The Suite Spot helps me to understand Rachel better and it has been quite a delightful read despite a few heartbreaking moments. We get to know that Rachel didn't always have luck on her side as she was never treated right by the men in her life until she met Mason, who turned out — to just experience one of the biggest losses in his life.

The two different trajectories of the characters were depicted in this work, with one finally realizing its worth and taking a step forward, while the other remained stuck in a grief-stricken holding pattern. Even so, you can see how they bring out the best in each other throughout. Their energies are synchronized in the pursuit of a seamless, perfectly balanced relationship and I think it was what I enjoyed the most about this book.

In comparison to Float Plan, I appreciate how this story is being told in a lighter tone. The setting and supporting characters aid in bringing the narrative to life. From Maisie's shenanigans to time spent with the sweetest members of the book club, the overall mood will just keep your spirits uplifted with warmth and hope.

Undeniably, Trish Doller is such a wonderful storyteller too. Her writing is easy to read, the pacing is just right, and the character development is both approachable and memorable. It's amazing to see her ability to write one engaging piece without having to rely heavily on miscommunication or dissension. As Rachel and Mason progress from friends to lovers, everything about their trip is gratifying.

However, I don't think this book has the 'wow' factor that concedes me to finding it impressive or mindblowing, which explains the three stars. Previously, I mentioned how Trish had Anna and Keane's romance written steadily. While the same could be said for Rachel and Mason, I find their romance to be a bit late-blooming compared to its precedent couple, which shouldn't be a drawback but could be seen as a bit bland to some.

Nonetheless, despite the shortcoming, it can't be denied that it has been great entertainment to read about the city girl and town boy, falling in love. Everything about this book still brings me comfort and joy, which promised me to be on the lookout for the next book!

"The Suite Spot" by Trish Doller is Book #2 in the "Beck Sisters" series!

Rachel Beck is a single mom still living at home with her divorced mom. The best parts of her life is Maisie, her adorable daughter, and her job in hotel management at a high-end hotel in Miami, FL.

Rachel loves her job until the moment she's fired! Now she's spinning. A friend tells her about a management opportunity in Ohio with a boutique hotel and brewery on an island on Lake Erie.

Excited for a new start, Rachel accepts the position and with bags packed, she drives north with Maisie to Kelleys Island. What she finds when they arrive is only a foundation. Her handsome boss-owner, Mason Brown, is defensive, cranky, and doesn't seem to have a clue what he's doing.

It's looking like Rachel's been snookered. What's up her boss' sleeves and how does Rachel figure into his plans?

There are so many positive aspects to this book and I was pulled in early. Rachel is such a relatable character you can't help but root for her. Her adorable-realistically portrayed daughter, Maisie, and the unexpected relationship she develops with Mason's grumpy cat is so stinking precious. This author knows how to create great characters and relationships and this story is brimming with both!

What I loved most was watching the relationship between Rachel and Mason slowly build into something special. Also, the topics within are serious and meaningful: sexual harassment in the workplace, death of a child, single parenthood, custody mediations, friendship, and family.

This simple, easy to read story is exactly what I needed at just the right time! I will definitely read this author again and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a third book in this delightful series. I highly recommend!

Thank you to Marissa at St. Martin's Publishing Group for a widget of this ARC through NetGalley. It has been my pleasure to give my honest and voluntary review.

I had some concerns starting this read. Having finished the previous book, The Float Plan recently, and finding it well, underwhelming.

Knowing that the focus of this book would be on the other sister Rachel, it did little to squelch my trepidation. In The Float Plan, she came off as unlikeable and just mean?💁🏻‍♀️

But I needn’t have worried. In the end, I ended up loving and rooting for Rachel throughout.

Rachel was just fired from her night hotel-management job.

After an opportunity arises to assist managing a boutique hotel based around a brewery in Ohio, she jumps at the chance. Rachel, with her four-year-old daughter in tow, heads west (well…northwest to be precise).

Once arriving, she quickly realizes the owner of the hotel, Mason has run a bit of a bait and switch. The hotel is nothing more than a blank slab of concrete and a dream. Seriously?

Can Rachel and Mason make their dream a reality?

A cute, sweet rom-com I enjoyed from beginning to end and loved Rachel and Mason!❤️

Pleasantly surprised, I look forward to the next release from this author!

A rom-com weekend buddy read with Susanne!

This is Romance, and this is the second book in the Beck Sisters series. The first book in this series was Float Plan, and I have read and review that book. This book is not like the Float Plan, but this book follows the main character (Anna) of Float Plan sister (Rachel). I really loved Rachel's character. I was pulled into this book from the beginning, and I could not put it down. I loved this book so much. I loved the story line/plot of this book. The romance of this book is slow moving, but it was so cute. This book covers some really hard topics, but I think it is done really well. The cat in this book was one of my favorite character for a pet that cat has so much personality. Also, Rachel daughter was so cute, and I think her character broke up so of the hard times in this book. This is a very well written book with great characters. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (St. Martin's Griffin) or author (Trish Doller) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

I re-read this book by listening to the audiobook, and I still really enjoyed this book. The narrator did a great job, and I loved listening to this audiobook.

The Suite Spot by Trish Doller is a 2022 St. Martin’s Griffin Publication.

Yes!

This is the follow up to 'Float Plan', which I really enjoyed, and where we first meet Rachel. She gave her sister a really hard time, in that book, so I was very curious to see what her story would be like…

Rachel is a single mom working in the hospitality business. Her daughter’s father, Brian, is immature and not much help to her. She still lives at home with her mother, but she’s getting by- until she loses her job and has one final blow up with Brian. She takes a job, sight unseen, working at a brewery hotel in Ohio.

Upon arrival, she realizes she’s been duped, but the hotel’s owner, Mason, offers a better opportunity than she signed up for- a chance to help him build his hotel from the ground up.

With Mason’s background in beer brewing and Rachel’s hospitality experience, they could be a good team.

The trouble is, Mason is not in a good place after suffering the worst tragedy imaginable. As long as he and Rachel give one another a wide berth everything should work out okay. But as time passes a friendship of sorts develops between them- but Rachel finds herself wishing for more…

I loved this story- everything about it! It’s such a sweet, touching and gentle story, but it’s also just so normal- which is such a relief to me- and unbelievably refreshing!!

Maisie, Rachel’s daughter, was age appropriate-and... Again... Refreshingly normal. (I was beginning to wonder if regular kids existed anymore, as we seldom see them in books anymore)

So much of the story felt real and heartfelt. All the everyday things ordinary people deal with- regular jobs, business building, single parenthood, dead-beat dads, family issues, pain and loss, and the natural longing to find the right person to share one’s life with. I felt like these were people I might encounter in my life and would feel comfortable getting to know them. I loved the way these characters developed and became stronger- first working on their own pain, issues, and insecurities, and then stepping up for each other.

The author wrote this book in 2020 and realized the need to write a gentle book as much as we needed to read one. While there are some heavy topics, and they are given the gravity they deserve, the story is not heavy or gloomy, just realistic and ultimately uplifting and heartwarming. The author gives it just the right balance.

Overall, this there isn’t much to critique here. This is a short book, but packs a lot into the space allotted it. I really, really need to read more books like this one! All the stars for this one!!

What a lovely, touching and utterly enjoyable read this was! I truly needed Rachel and Mason in my fictional life right now!

When Rachel was described as having a bountiful figure, I stood up and cheered! When Mason confessed that he preferred a more voluptuous lover over a bony physique, I whooped and applauded. And that steamy scene in the woods!!! I'm still fanning myself!

We need more books like this one that celebrate the average woman in North America and our cultural diversity. Why should the rest of us be left out of all the fun?!!!

A part of Mason's back story was so very, very sad. Rachel supported him and never forced Mason to have to deal with her daughter, Maisie, one on one, unless he felt comfortable doing so. He was still grieving a terrible loss (no spoilers here). Rachel was also disheartened by the terrible hand she had been dealt: losing her job at an elite hotel because of a lecherous guest who had assumed that she was part of the room service as well!

Maisie was adorable: her addiction to Moana and her declaration that she and her new friend Leo would get married had me in stitches!

The entire story and its unique cast of characters held my attention from beginning to end. How would Rachel handle that last bit of drama that got thrown at her by her ex, Brian? Mason's wholehearted support was a thing of beauty to behold: a totally awww-worthy scene. Gotta love that beer-brewing, green tea sipping guy!

I'm rating this wonderful novel a 5 out of 5 shining starts: I was truly sorry when it ended. I wanted to stay with the entire Kelley Island clan and be part of that zany, close-knit community. To paraphrase Rachel: it felt like home......

My thanks to the author, her publisher and NetGalley for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review. Well done!!!

I have good news and bad news. The good news: this is a delightful read. I thoroughly enjoyed Rachel's story as she goes on her own adventure with her adorable little daughter Maisie. The bad news: we have run out of Beck sisters. Bummer! There is much to love about this second Beck Sisters book: the setting on Kelleys Island, a microbrewery with some really fun new brews, a cantankerous cat who falls in love with a precocious preschooler, and a super cute couple. I am ready to go out and try some new brews after reading about the flavorful creations in this book. Please note that there are some heavy topics that are covered in this book including sexual harassment, loss of a child, and custody disputes. It would make a great book group read as there is much to discuss and enjoy about this story.

Thank you to St. Martins and Edelweiss+ for a DRC in exchange for an honest review.

4⭐
Genre ~ women's fiction
Series ~ Beck Sisters #2
Others in the series Float Plan
Setting ~ Ohio
Publication date ~ March 8, 2022
Page Count ~ 273 (25 chapters)
Audio length ~ 7 hours and 42 minutes
Narrator ~ Sarah Naughton
POV ~ single 3rd
Featuring ~ workplace sexual assault, single mom, island life, close proximity, small town, boss/employee, age gap, friends to lovers, slow burn, very minimal steamage

Trigger warnings from the author ~ sexual assault, mentions of child death and suicide

Rachel (28) & Mason (38)
Rachel moves from Florida to Ohio on a whim for a job opportunity at a brewery hotel after getting wrongly fired. But when she pulls up to the property it seems like Mason led her there on false pretenses since the hotel is still under construction.

This was cute one. Maisie was adorable and well behaved. I don't know about moving across (is it still across when it's really up?) country with my toddler on my own to live with a man I don't know though, but all works out of course. The characters are relatable and likable. The slow burn for them was perfect and developed nicely.

Series notes:
Honestly I have no clue if a true standalone because I read Float Plan a while ago. I am guessing it's okay though because her sister doesn't make too many appearances.

Narrated notes:
She did a fine job as always.

In the acknowledgements Trish Doller mentions that had 2020 not been such a traumatic year, The Suite Spot might have turned out to be a different book, but she found herself needing to tell a story that was warm and gentle.

Trish Doller, I thank you. We could all use warm and gentle from time to time.

Rachel Beck is a single mother that still lives at home with her own mother while working the nightshift at an upscale Miami hotel. That is until their highest paying and most celebrated guest makes an unwanted advance on her.

Now jobless she has to figure out a future for herself and her daughter, Maisey.

A friend tips her off to a new brewery hotel that is being built in Ohio on Lake Erie by a friend of hers and he's looking for a manager to run it. She'd not only be perfect for the job but it would be her dream come true.

Upon arrival she meets Mason, hotel owner and brew master, and he seems to be moody and distant but over time the protective walls he's built begin to crumble and sparks start to fly.

Will Kelleys Island be her new home sweet home and will love be on the horizon for the pair?

This was a great feel good story and I really liked Rachel and Mason individually but for whatever reason I didn't really feel that sizzle, that chemistry, between them like I did with Anna and Keane in the first book. The relationship seemed to develop too easily here but again they are so darn likable that I just went with it even though I wasn't fully buying it. Mason was so great with Maisey which was one of my favorite aspects of the book. I loved the community of people on Kellys Island and how helpful and supportive everyone was to one another. I appreciated that Rachel was a normal woman that may carry a few extra pounds and suffer from anxiety but still feels beautiful and knows her worth even if she needs to be reminded from time to time.

"You are beautiful and smart," he says. "And any man who doesn't appreciate all of you doesn't deserve any of you."

The Suite Spot is a sweet book that is sure to warm your heart and bring a smile to your face. Now I'm Off the Map with Anna's bestie Carla. Looks like we're headed to Ireland for a wedding. I wonder whose wedding it is? Hmm. 😉 4 stars!

Thanks to Overdrive for the loan!

Oh my gosh. Something really big happened about two weeks ago. I read Float Plan by Trish Doller, and it reignited my love for this genre. I’ve never stopped reading rom coms or contemporaries, but my TBR has definitely been more filled with emotional literary fiction and memoirs the past couple years. What a treat it was to read an emotional story (because Float Plan brought out all my emotions) and KNOW there would be a happily-ever-after. Not to mention the sense of adventure, the island hopping, and two main characters I absolutely loved!

Where Float Plan was Anna’s story with Keane, The Suite Spot is about Anna’s sister, Rachel, and her love interest Mason. Please do read these in order if you can. While this can definitely stand on its own, you don’t want to miss Anna’s story, and her cameos will make more sense.

Rachel’s journey to love is a relatable one. She has usually let guys choose her rather than the other way around, and she’s finally realized that. She also has the most adorable young daughter, Maisie. Rachel moves to Ohio for a fresh start with a new job; the boss at the new job is Mason. Together they build a cabin resort and slowly fall in love. Where Float Plan features a rescued dog, The Suite Spot has an irascible cat who absolutely loves Maisie. Shoutout to Mason and Rachel for build a habitat for Yokai to make her feel more comfortable! 😻

Highly readable with a charming setting and characters, I cherished my time spent with this book. I already preordered Off the Map and cannot wait to read Carla’s story. If you are looking for books that spark you to fall in love with reading all over again this summer, look no further. My highest recommendation for both books.

I received a gifted copy.

The Suite Spot by Trish Doller is the second book in the contemporary romance Beck Sisters series. As with a lot of romance series the main characters have changed from those in the first book of the Beck Sisters series so each of the books can be read as a standalone if choosing to do so. There are a few mentions of the first book’s character’s though for those that have followed from the beginning.

Rachel Beck feels like she has been stuck in her life and not really getting anywhere. Rachel is a single mother of a beautiful little girl but still lives at home and keeps going back to a dead end relationship with her ex. When Rachel loses her job she does something impulsive and applies to one several states away.

After finding out she’s been offered the job on Kelleys Island in Lake Erie Rachel packs up her and her daughter’s things and heads north. After arriving at Kelleys Island Rachel finds that her new boss, Mason, is not what she was expecting but Rachel is determined to make the most of the fresh start for her and her daughter.

Going into The Suite Spot by Trish Doller I was a little concerned that I wouldn’t love it as much as the first book, Float Plan, as that one was sailing the Caribbean and I love to virtually travel. Well, my fear was needless as I quickly settled into The Suite Spot and found that I really enjoyed these main characters and their story too. There was still a new start for Rachel in a charming location and I’m totally a sucker for cute kids being involved too so I completely enjoyed this second book just as much as the first.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

After reading ‘Float Plan’ I was so curious about Anna’s sister Rachel and was excited to read her story. I really loved Rachel and Mason. And of course I loved Maysie. As much as I loved the characters separately, I never felt that chemistry/connection with them together. Even though I enjoyed the actual story a lot, unfortunately the romance was a bit lacking for me.

Very, very bland.

If you're looking for a rosy romance with no chemistry, no squealy moments, no problems that require a Grand Gesture... you've come to the right place. I however, found this superficial and boring.

Every problem is minor and instantly resolved. The romance is easy, quick and reciprocated. Everyone has baggage but behaves like a person without baggage. And there is a whole town of insta-friends. Plus our heroine's preschooler is either coloring quietly in the background or being babysat by one insta-friend or another.

Rather disappointing.

I was floored by the first book in this sister series, Float Plan about Anna. What I thought might be a sad book featuring a woman who loses her fiancé to suicide, instead became a story of a woman finding herself in the middle of her grief. So when the book about Anna's sister popped up in NetGalley I jumped at it.

This book centers around Rachel, a basically single mother living with her own Mother in Florida and enjoying her job at a swanky hotel. Once she is accused of accosting a millionaire guest at the hotel, her life takes a drastic turn. She is fired from the job she adored. She feels desperate to replace her job as her daughter, Maisie, is still in preschool and Rachel life is all about providing for her and creating the best home life for her she can. Although Maisie's Dad is in the picture, he is barely there and is an immature, self-centered, low-motivation kind of guy.

Feeling low and ready for a new opportunity, she decides to accept a job at a start-up boutique hotel in Ohio. She packs everything up and decides to finally take a risk for the chance at her own happiness. Unfortunately, after arriving, she learns that the start-up hotel is still only an idea. She unsurprisingly is devastated to find out that she was mislead by her new boss, Mason. Mason informs her that although the job description has changed, he is confident that her background and previously developed skills are exactly what he needs to bring his concept to fruition. What began as simply an idea became the basis for an ingenious plan -a boutique hotel that combines a brewery with newly built cabins that were designed and decorated with a lake house feel. I'm ready to make my reservations now!

The rest of the story involves the process of Rachel and Mason learning to work together, Rachel and Maisie learning to adjust to their new life, Rachel becoming part of the community and of course Rachel and Mason finding that their attraction is mutual. Mason comes to the relationship with a past full of heartache and pain. Both Rachel and Mason were well developed characters. I really liked them individually and as a couple. I especially loved that the story mentions that Rachel is somewhat overweight, but does not zero in on it. It is part of her persona but it does not consume, define nor deter her. So many of the side characters were also well developed. I heard someone mention that they appreciated that Maisie was an honest depiction of a young child and I definitely agree. I was happy to see the realistic portrayal of the struggles a single mom faces daily.

I really enjoyed these characters and this story line - my one small disappointment was that the ending felt a little rushed. A story of second chances, taking risks, parenthood, friendship, and overcoming the past - it is one not to be missed. I read this one in a day because I just couldn't put it down. Definitely recommend.

Rachel Beck is a woman on her way to the top in hotel management until a wealthy tenant of the swanky Miami hotel where she works tries to trap her in his hotel room and force himself on her. When she rebuffs his advances and escapes his room, he files false charges against her and this single mother finds herself out of a job and blackballed by other hotels in the area. Rachel's dreams of owning her own hotel one day are down the drain, but her immediate problem is supporting herself and her child. When a friend forwards her a job opportunity at a brewery hotel in Ohio, she packs her things and moves. What she finds when she and her daughter Maisie arrives is not what was advertised. The brewery master Mason conned her into accepting the job indicating the rental cabins were ready to go . . . what she finds is that they're barely off the ground. But when he offers her full control of the design, building, decorating and management of the cabins/hotel, she decides to accept. And the funny feelings stirred in her tummy and lady-parts every time she's near Mason doesn't hurt any either.

I love a sweet, second chance love story and that's what The Suite Spot is. Rachel is a strong woman with a mind of her own in spite of some body image issues and disappointing failed relationship with Maisie's father. She soon discovers that Mason has issues of his own including an ex-wife and a past tragedy that left him living alone in seclusion - a real grumpy island recluse. As the two get to know one another, it becomes obvious that Mason's issues worsen when he's around Rachel's adorable daughter Maisie. As these two characters work side by side day after day, their emotional connection begins to gel and past history shared. I found these characters to be authentic and believable. I adored Maisie as her childlike innocence starts to win Mason over giving readers some of my favorite scenes. While there are a few twists to this story for the most part it's low angst romance - just a couple of opposites learning to live, love and grow together after past disappointments. The author does a fantastic job incorporating the beautiful scenery of the area around Lake Erie into the story. My only minor issue with this book is a rather abrupt ending to an issue that Rachel faces concerning her daughter. Since the issue was introduced, I thought it should have been explored more instead of quickly glazed over with obvious answers. And I would have loved a more in-depth epilogue looking into the future. Perhaps we'll get that in the next book. The Suite Spot is a story of people overcoming their past tragedies and weaknesses, lowering their defenses and accepting all the wonderful possibilities life has to offer . . . including love. I highly recommend this book to fans of contemporary romance, especially opposites attract and second chances.
Special thanks to St. Martins Griffin for an arc of this book.

Fantastic read! I don’t read too many romantic contemporary but I should because I love how this book got me smiling often. I enjoyed following Rachel’s view. Her thoughts sounded real and relatable. I loved all of the characters in this book. The people on the island were so welcoming and nice. The diversity was great. Mason, 39, was an interesting character. The beer brewery was a nice touch. I haven’t read of it before so it was refreshing. Now I want to try some beers even though I don’t really drink beer! The romance was sweet and cute and slow burning. Their friends, Avery and her husband were great and hilarious. I enjoyed the glimpse into their book club. I loved that Anna and Keane appeared in this story too.

This book started with Rachel, 28, Anna’s sister, as she waited with her 3 year old daughter, Maisie for her ex-boyfriend, Brian, to come pick Maisie up for their weekend get together. She’s been waiting around for Brian to grow up because he put his love for his car improvements and video games above saving money for their family or even marriage. She worked at a luxury hotel in Florida as a Reception Manager on the night shift. One customer was known for groping and one night while working he did that and she swore at him so she got fired. A new job was referred to her but it’s located in a secluded island in Ohio. Uprooted and moved, she decided it could be good for her. So she moved out of her mom’s house with her daughter and accepted the job offer. At first it was nerve racking but as time went on she loved the change in environment and people. Every chapter started with a foreign word and its definition in English. The story was organized by months starting April and ending in November.

The Suite Spot was well written and a fast paced read! Definitely a page turner and often I couldn’t put it down. Humor and new love in books, this series have won me over. Maisie was a cute toddler and my toddler could absolutely relate to her, even cranky mornings too. Island life sounded great especially with all of the stars and seafoods. It was a surprise that Mason came from an Asian background because his name wasn’t an obvious giveaway. His interest in women who aren’t all bony was another surprise to me. I liked that each book can be read as a standalone even though they are in a series. I’m excited for book 3! I can’t tell where it’s heading but I’m excited for the surprise. I recommend everyone to read this book as well as Float Plan!

3.5 out of 5 stars.

Now that I've read 'Float Plan' and Anna's story arc ended in the best way possible, I can't wait to properly meet her older sister Rachel and get to read her book.

I was so excited to Trish Doller's novel Float Plan and been planning on reading it ever since it came out, but I was truly surprised when I unkowingly noticed right at this moment that she is going to write a companion novel.
Now, this makes me even more excited to pick up the first book of 'Beck Sisters'. (as she has named this series)

The Suite Spot is a winner. I love everything about this book. This is my first read by Miss Doller and I definitely looking forward her other book.
The characters are coming from multi race background. I love how Miss Doller mixing everything up and presenting her lovely romance story into the world.

Different from other romance authors, Miss Doller writes her story with much more realistic conversation and real life struggle. As a single mother who burned out from the world, body image and traumatic loss. Two people coming together and healing each other in a romantic, sweet and tender way.
So much happiness after reading this book.

Well, let’s just say that this “Hit the Spot!”

A sweet, endearing, funny, rom-com, with a few serious undertones, “The Suite Spot” delivered!

I, admittedly, had a few reservations going into this one. Kaceey and I recently listened to this author’s prior novel, The Float Plan as both books are part of a series (and we were given an arc of The Suite Spot) and sadly, The Float Plan left much to be desired. Luckily, I had nothing to worry about.

Here, we have Rachel Beck (Anna’s sister), who, after being fired from her job at a Florida hotel, uproots her entire life, including her daughter, and takes a job at what she thinks is a boutique hotel on Kelleys Island in Ohio. The joke is on her though as there is no hotel. Mason, the owner, needs Rachel to build and furnish it.

Rachel is kind, funny and full of spunk. Mason is gruff, difficult, and extremely handsome. What develops between these two is a friendship and yes, some crazy sparks. Yes, this is predictable, but it’s also extremely sweet and fun and it put a smile on my face during trying times.

A fun, sweet, buddy read with Kaceey.

Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press, and Trish Doller for this fabulous arc. I can’t wait to see what this author has in store next!

"I learned at a pretty young age that most people weren't interested in hearing the things I wanted to talk about. My interests have broadened since then, but I never completely got the hang of being social."

°•*⁀➷

While this quote doesn't sum up the book like my usual quote choices do, it does sum up me pretty well. So I'm going with it.

I loved the first book of this little duology. Everything about Anna spoke to me. In this book, everything about Mason spoke to me. Both handle the incredible pain that grief creates inside of us, and I just related so much to the way both of them handled it. This book just felt a bit more rushed and lost in heavy topics that didn't seem necessary.

But that quote, it was perfect. I've always been the reader. The one who lost herself in fiction and wanted to talk about only that. It's why I got lost on the Internet for so many of my teen years and why I feel so lost in my life most of the time. But it's also helped me to find such incredible friends who WILL allow me to talk to them about whatever I want... forever. And this book touches on that, too.

If someone is meant to be in your life, they will be. And if they aren't, there's nothing you can do to make them stay. I love Mason. I love that I got to escape into his story for a little while. And I love that I got to fall in love with him alongside Rachel.

I preferred this one to "The Float Plan" - as both the romance itself and the main characters seemed more relatable - seems to be more believable that a single Mom would relocate for a better job & life than a grief-stricken woman would sail off 🤷🏻‍♀️, but I enjoyed them both a lot. I do hope we get another installment of the Beck's storyline...

“I don’t want to fall apart. I want the universe to bend my way for once.”

This was a sweet and heartwarming read. I love that the romance truly had a connection and we had full conversations between them. Their relationship was at a perfect pace.

However, I did get a little bored in the end.

Short to the point synopsis
Rachel gets fired from her hotel job. She finds a job in a village in Ohio. She packs up her and her daughter, Maisie. When she gets there she meets Mason who is the grumpy hotel owner but there is no hotel. So Mason might have to explain a little. Together Rachel and Mason work to build a perfect hotel and fall in love along the way.

Both Rachel and Mason are dealing with their own problems. They connected right from the beginning and understood each other to a certain extent. They were there for each other and listened to one another. Truly the right place, right time.

From the first couple of chapters, I was worried I would hate this because I wasn't the biggest fan of the fmc but I grew to like her. I am happy I decided to keep reading because it was worth it.

Rachel Beck's careful life crashes when she loses her job as a night manager at a luxury hotel in Miami Beach. She's fired thanks to a wrongful accusation from a wealthy guest who actually assaulted her. Blackballed in the local hotel industry, Rachel follows a lead from a friend for a management position at a brewery hotel in Lake Erie at a place called Kelleys Island. Despite the owner's slightly gruff manner, Rachel decides to move herself and her daughter to the island, looking forward to the chance to run a hotel and brewery. But when she arrives, she finds the hotel... isn't built yet. Mason, its owner, begs her to stay, offering her carte blanche in the creation and design of the place. As the two work together, she realizes Mason has his own troubled past, but that working together on Kelleys Island might just be the second chance they both need.

"A career I spent nearly ten years building, gone in an instant because the Blackwells of the world always get their way."

This book was such a fun and pleasant surprise! I'll admit that I didn't really love the first book in the series, FLOAT PLAN, which featured Rachel's sister, Anna. It was a little too slow and sad for me. I wouldn't have really guessed that PLAN and SUITE SPOT were written by the same author, honestly, if they weren't linked by Anna and Rachel. SPOT does have a sad side, due to what we learn about Mason's past, but it's also sweet and romantic and funny.

The setting for this one is fun--a small island with a group of island folk that we get to know. Rachel is an interesting character; she's tough and motivated, but she has a soft side too. Her daughter, Maisie, is adorable, and it's enjoyable getting to know both of them. And Mason, is of course, a grumpy guy with secrets, but he does not come across as a cliche or trope, but a man with depth. He was easy to like, and I loved the chemistry between Mason and Rachel. I didn't like that there was only a hand wave to Rachel being plus size--not sure why that was introduced and then only briefly mentioned once or twice.

This book made me laugh and cry. It's really witty (there's an amazing appearance by a cat). I loved the themes of family and believing yourself that ran through it. This is a great read--sweet and inspiring. 4 stars.

I received a copy of this book from St. Martin's Press and Netgalley in return for an unbiased review.

Rachel loses the job she’s had for the last ten years as a hotel concierge in one night when a rich entitled jerk doesn’t get his way. All she’s worked hard for seems to have gone up in smoke and she’s faced with taking a job at a budget hotel chain. However, another option presents itself when a friend recommends Rachel to another friend starting up a boutique hotel/lodge on an island off Lake Erie, miles away from Miami Beach. Rachel would have to take a chance and leave the only home she’s ever known in Florida, the father of her child (a total deadbeat dad). I was totally on board with this gamble, especially when the owner/proprietor is revealed to be a hot reclusive guy.

Mason was a good guy, and it was apparent he had a sad past, but this was the perfect situation for Rachel and her three-year-old daughter. Of course, I knew there’d be a romance coming and I couldn’t wait! These two deserved each other and every happiness I hoped was coming. I loved that Rachel found a such a perfect life situation in an unexpected place by making a last minute, sort of impulsive choice by taking a job so far from home. I found the process of starting up the hotel/brewery fascinating! Choosing the layout, theme, and décor, sounded like a lot of fun. I could picture the cabins and brewery, with all its rustic charm and it sounded like a place I’d love to stay!

The Suite Spot was a sweet, easy-going romance. Rachel and Mason were firmly friends before there was romance and I appreciated that strong foundation. It was a low drama romance with the conflict coming from another source. The Suite Spot was book two in the Beck Sisters series, however, you don’t need to read the first book in order to enjoy this installment. It works well as a standalone since it’s focused on a different couple.

I alternately listened and read the book and I thought Sarah Naughton did a fantastic job with both the male and female voices. She also narrated Float Plan, which I thoroughly enjoyed as well. Total recommend! I listened at 1.5-1.7x normal speed.

Oh my wooord did I love this book!!! Besides feeling like the warmest of cozy blankets and deftly capturing the real-life vibe of Lake Erie’s Kelley’s Island (so many spot-on northern Ohio references!!!😍), THE SUITE SPOT delivered the most delicious, heartfelt romance. I was all about Rachel and Mason’s chemistry and their growth toward self-actualization and love. And seriously, the Midwestern small-town, lake-side charm is *off the charts!* Read this when you’re hankering for a warm summer night filled with fireflies, quaint breweries, and swoon-worthy romance. 5/5, highly recommend!
