Threadbare: Ghosts of Ash and Gunsmoke

Rate this book
Can you live happily ever after when you’re haunted by the ghosts of the past?

After almost losing their sideshow family in a bloody battle between the NAR and resistance fighters, Amandine and René want to put their troubled past behind them. A dubious contact sends them to the sleepy town of Slate Plains, Wyoming, and no sooner do they step from their beat-up pickup do they realize that things aren’t what they seem.

Is the local mortician a witch like the rumors say? Is Dietrich Valke, the richest cattleman in the state, under her thrall? Who is responsible for all of the fires that mysteriously spring up whenever strangers come to town? Can Amandine and René blend in and make a life for themselves on the wild prairie, or is it only a matter of time before the Inquestors unearth their troubled past?

Meanwhile Sangria, Glorious, and the rest of Marmi’s Marvels find themselves walking a dangerous tightrope when they open their illegal jazz show in the sparkling NAR capital of Nieuwestad. Friends in high places keep them from the scaffold for now, but they suspect that their protection will last only as far as their obedience.

Escape into the second Threadbare adventure set in a fantastic alternate 1945 and ask When the troubles of the world catch up with you, do you choose what is safe or do you choose what is right?

Suspenseful, rollicking fun with quirky characters

Absolutely wonderful sequel to the original and in some ways even better especially in the writing. I'm not usually a fan of dusty western type of stories, but DeMers made me fall in love with her fictional prairie town and all it's occupants. That coupled with the action-packed and dramatic juxtaposition of the urban city and the duplicitous life of the morally gray Carver was delightful. All I can say, is I'm ready for more and why hasn't some savvy agent snapped her up?
