I almost died. Virtually everyone else around me has died. Now, the dead aren’t staying dead anymore. I’ve somehow ended up locked in the very epicenter of the zombie apocalypse. F*ck me.
Like most college students, all Callie Norton has worried about for weeks was passing this semester’s finals. After a night out celebrating, she and her friends wake up, sick with way more than the hangover of the century. All too soon, Callie realizes that this is not just a common cold she’s suffering from—and when she wakes up from a coma in a quarantine tent as the sole survivor, lack of food and water aren’t her only problems.
Things aren’t looking good for her to survive the next hour, let alone escape a city where most of the inhabitants have turned into crazed cannibals… and this is just the beginning.
I feel so disloyal in leaving anything less than 5 stars for anything Adrienne Lecter writes, because her Green Fields series has absolutely my favorite books in the post-apocalyptic genre. I have re-read them so many times I feel I know some by heart.
Where the Green Fields saga introduced us to an interesting cast of characters and a forward-moving story from the beginning, Survival: World of Anthrax spends much of the first three-quarters of the book pretty much with just the main character, Callie, with brief bits of her companion Kas thrown in. We read, in excruciating detail, about every car Callie has to climb around/over/under/through to escape the city. It got to the point where, when I’d turn the page, I’d scan to the bottom to see if she was still circumventing said cars, and I’d skip to the next page. And the next.
I am hopeful that the next book in the series will develop into the type of storytelling Ms. Lecter is SO good at. The last quarter of the book introduces new characters and new hopes for a great story.
I've never read anything from this author before and it was only having a gander through to see if there was anything that stood out to read and Adrienne Lecter popped up and as soon as I saw Anthrax I was hooked. I had been reading about Anthrax Island up North of Scotland and that’s why I decided to start reading World of Anthrax. Survival was absolutely brilliant and the fact that it’s a series is even better.
Callie is a pretty engaging character, she's got a sense of humor that's really endearing and I really enjoyed the parts where she was struggling to sneak through the devastated city. I also liked Kas, I'm a sucker for autistic coded characters that aren't haughty, and Kas really hit the spot on that front. Their interactions with other survivors is where it got less interesting and I couldn't help but feeling like I'd read these parts in at least 5 other zombie novels because that's just how tropey they were.
in one word wow just wow. Another spectacular hit zombie series from the author of the Greenfield series.
Another spectacular and epic new series from the author of the Greenfield series. Outstanding cast of characters awesome storyline. A college student studying in North Carolina for a degree in accounting lives in an apartment building with her three roommates and then it happens. Read on in C the devastation The whore and who will survive. Yes it’s a zombie apocalypse and yes there are zombies. Great characters that you will come to like and care about and some that you will come to hate and despise. Some of them will survive and some of them will not. One way or the other you will keep reading until the end and then you will be chomping at the bit waiting for the next book in the series.
A. Lecter is a great storyteller. I have enjoyed her other series, Greenfields, and various short stories. This new series stars a young lady torn from college and facing a very dangerous new illness sweeping the country and maybe the world. Her trials to stay a Ive.on the first few weeks of the pandemic need to be read to be understood. So do so, now!
I'm a sucker for these type of series. You know, end of the world, apocalyptic turned zombie turn "messed up way to try n restart humanity" books. I read her other Green Fields series and fell hard for those. I honestly was looking for something along those lines and couldn't find anything that got the type of emotions she does when she writes. Her writing gets me all the feels, mad, sad, worried about the characters, in too deep basically. She gets me caught up in their world to the point I tune ALL else out and even though this is slightly different I still fell in love. The story is not too entirely different, girl wakes up ina world turned upside down, runs into some shady people teams up with a ride or die, finds some less shady yet still shady people n fights n runs for the lives and ya know all that fun stuff. Mrs. Lecter gets you so caught up in the characters and the way she makes it like your living alongside these people. I don't know I truly love the way she illustrates her stories not just writes them. I form this "movie" in my head because of how artistically articulate she is. Anyway I give this book (I can't say the whole series yet bc I just finished book 1) a 5 star rating because I love the main character Callie, not too full of herself, she knows her limits and is not scared to voice what she knows most of us would feel if in her shoes. She ends up with this twisted not relationship but I feels it's heading there.... ((eventually)) with this "leader" of another group and at times i think he is a jerk but he redeems himself, Jared. Then u have her "sidekick" Kas, who is deff her opposite but they fit. Of course Jared has a "sidekick" and the 2 of them clearly end up in different "groups" as Callie n Kas. Idk it's these types of situations that Adrienne writes so well, they aren't so different truly but her style of writing just keeps me so intrigued. Obviously I'm a huge fan of hers and if you didn't like the Green Fields series (which idk y you wouldn't if you like this type of apocalyptic, learning how to live in the zombie filled world and end up finding love (lmfao) type books) than you WONT like this. If you are a fan, buckle up bc your in for a up n down, back n forth, amazing ride.
Yet another author whose characters seem to have lived under a rock. Callie Norton sees people who are obviously dead and then come to life and start chasing “live” peeps. Then they start chomping on them. Uh, gee! What could that mean? What could be wrong with them? She must have kangaroos in the top paddock (not the full quid, or a sandwich short of a picnic). She does eventually use the Z word, but not until it has become painfully obvious that she is in a ZOMBIE apocalypse. Apparently, for some inane and unexplained reason, zombieism (it’s my new word) is a side-effect of Anthrax (according to the Author)! I call BS on that one. Everyone knows that zombieism is caused by the Zombie Virus.
Callie’s constant just-in-the-nick-of-time escapes became a bit monotonous and totally unbelievable. Similarly, her over-described escapes using one vehicle and then another went on for far too long. I suspect this was padding out the story a bit…no….a LOT. You know those people who you NEVER ask, “How are you?”, because you then get a diatribe of health complaints and that’s all they talk about for the next two hours? Well Callie is one of those. Yeesh, I’d hate to meet her at a party. If she wasn’t climbing in and out of cars, she was bitching and moaning about her buggered lungs. Yet, at the very end of the book, still weak, she had enough strength to beat the crap out of a couple of big dudes. Puleeeze!
This book was just dumb, and it had a bad ending, and I won’t be reading the next one. Do yourself a favour, and watch a series of The Walking Dead instead of struggling through this book. You'll be much more entertained.
Pretty okay zombie fun but like Adrienne Lecter's Green Fields series, this too has a boatload of cloak and dagger stuff happening in the background with that ever present paranoia of" is it a conspiracy". I'm calling it already, it totally is at least 3 conspiracies wrapped in another, maybe 8 different instances of believed betrayal, idk let's see.
The alpha-hole Jared is well.. an ass but you totally get the vibe that he's in the know about lots of things but keeping them from our fmc Callie that has secrets galore herself as well.
I can already tell that Jared will become a character that I love to hate but one you'd fondly remember afterwards. (or I've just read way too much dark romance with morally gray men/monsters)
Kas the sidekick, because he totally vibes as "sidekick" is a loveable geeky goofball and I have hope he survives in this series but not a lot since he's while not inept, he seems not that great at survival either.
Where do I start...it took me a few weeks to make it through this book because it was terrible. I hate not finishing books so I chipped away at this one a few pages at a time as it was utterly ridiculous. You can tell where the authors political views fall, meaning anyone with a gun is a Neanderthal who clearly hates women and views them as mindless breeding pack mules. There were times I laughed out loud at how pathetic the scenes were. Much of the inner dialogue was how the main character didn't want to go into homes when she was clearly starving and needed shelter because she didn't want to steal food. Ma'am this is the zombie apocalypse...it's not stealing if everyone is dead. The lame main character would have died a while back if this had been real, there were ZERO survival skills and the scenes made no sense, even basic common sense was greatly lacking. Someone get this person some beta readers who'll be honest with her.
Follow Callie through her fight to survive, waking up surrounded by dead friends, escaping with her life - from the dead and the living, somehow surviving every obstacle throw at her (mostly by dumb luck and sheer stubbornness!!).
Adrienne’s writing stands out from the saturated market, fast paced, the story flows so well, you won’t want to put this book down. The characters are multi faceted, complicated but compelling, I’m sure every woman can identify in parts of Callie, and what is her real story!?
The suspense is killing me! On to book 2! If you pick this up you won’t be disappointed!
DID NOT FINISH, I don't understand the hype or the reason why this book is so highly rated. I usually read 1-2 books a week and somehow it took me 2 weeks to read 3/4 of this one before finally giving up.
NOTHING, ever happens in this story. It's basically the MC walking around and narrating the situation sarcastically. A typical, unoriginal, seen a million times zombie apocalypse, described over and over again in excruciating details.
AVOID, if you have ever read or seen a movie about zombies before, nothing new or interesting to see here.
So far, so good! I really like this series already! I was hooked from the get go. The suspense in the beginning was so intense that I had to stop reading for a bit to allow my nerves and heart to regulate once again. I really enjoy that Callie's past is shrouded in mystery. Only a few hints here and there are sprinkled throughout regarding her back story. I feel that it adds depth to the story by not revealing everything right away. It's the natural progression in meeting someone and learning about them.
Ok so it’s a little different from the other books I have read by this author but different is good!! I’m a little confused by a few parts but I’m sure it will be cleared up in the next book! I’m wondering how people can look At the main character and tell that she was one of the sick ones.. I’m guessing everyone would look messy/sickly weeks after the world ending. I’m looking forward to the next book!
What could happen after an apocalyptic event causes zombies? This book explores grief, survival and the mystery of why. Callie and Kas are working to survive together, find safety and food without having to constantly looking over their shoulders. In a post-apocalyptic world they run across disaster after disaster while running from the undead, fires and all types of “survivors”.
One thing I liked about this book was that it didn’t follow the regular formula a lot of zombie books employ,it was a bit unique in that aspect, why the low rating? Cus apart from that the book was just ok,her cutting it close escapes were getting a bit repetitive, the characters lack substance but maybe it gets better, I’m definitely interested to see where this story leads because it has potential so I’ll be checking out the second book eventually.
I love this genre, but this book was a slog. It could have been really good, it has a new take on the cause of the apocalypse that was interesting. The damsel in distress who never smartens up was over done, along with the repeated hints that she's not really what she seems to be. It's the apocalypse, why bother to hide now? I might eventually get to book 2, but there's lots more in my TBR pile first.
I love Adrienne's books! I've reread the Green Field series a couple of times now!
This is a new series and if this first book is anything to go by we're in for another great ride! I devoured this book in a day. Loved the central characters and can't wait to see what mayhem and destruction awaits them!!
After a very anticipated wait from the author of Green Fields comes World of Anthrax and it did not disappoint. I love Cassie and I love Kas. Tony got his just deserts and yet Jared and the other guy are still out there. This book leaves off with the reader wanting to know what happens next. I can’t wait for book 2! Bring it on.
Sir, can I have some more? I love Callie, and how useless Kas is. I like how this focused on stealth, I like how freaking smart Callie was while on the verge of death the entire novel. I loved the beginning, middle, and sort of the end although a cliffhanger leaves me all "ugh sweet Jesus why... "
Adrienne Lecters books are always such a fun ride! Can't wait to continue the series. I love that her heroine is always a little snarky and completely unprepared. That makes their journey all the more entertaining. Callie is no different. I know she is gonna be a major zombie killing badass!
Adrienne Lecter knows how to write about the zombie apocalypse and make it sound real because she’s a scientist. Once again, she’s managed to capture my attention 100%, making me lose sleep. She writes the best female characters in a downtrodden world, and finds them companions that work with her.
It's getting more and more difficult to find a good book. I'm going to rank this one as exceptional! Adrienne Lecter has a true gift for holding a readers attention and allowing them to get really caught up in a great story. This is an amazing book and am really looking forward to continuing this fantastic adventure with great characters.
extremely detailed account of the life of the main character
Really liked book one. The action and the thoughts of the main character are very detailed, nothing vague. It is like an autobiography. Nothing far fetched about the science or the behavior of people, except the existence of the undead. Not sure humanity has seen that yet.
This was a slow read until the last few chapters. After getting done with book 1 I am wanting to read the next. It left you wondering what will happen. The first book seemed to be close to another book that I had read. I thought I had already read it but the last part made a big difference. So I knew I had not read it before.
Loved the Greenfields series and I’m back for more gore and mayhem. I’m loving the goofball Kas and was nearly upset but, you know, never mind. Trying not to give away any spoilers. Not too sure about Jared and I of course love Callie and am looking forward to finding out more about her past. On to the next book!
Official rating is 4.5. I really liked this book! It had my attention though most of it though there were some parts that I felt were repetitive. Like caz always being pretty unhelpful and incompetent or how she has gut feelings all of the time and then dismisses it almost immediately. Overall it's a good book and I'm going to be reading/listening to the others in the series.
Not in a good way obviously but more in an educationally interesting way. Now I really really want to know what Callie did for a living before she was fully committed to eke out a bland existence. A refreshing take on TEOTWAWKI (yes I looked it up the first time I saw it).
Adrienne Lecter has the beginning of a damn good series on her hands here. Sheer determination and blind luck is all Called has in her arsenal. She must find her way in the new normal.
I’m a fan in post-apocalyptic books and this one did not disappoint. I am really enjoying the main character. I love that her inner dialogue and actions seem so realistic. Can’t wait to see what happens next.
