You don't have to be an opera fan to appreciate this beautifully written memoir by world-famous tenor Andrea Bocelli. Born among the vineyards of Tuscany, Bocelli was still an infant when he developed glaucoma. Music filtering into his room soothed the unsettled child. By the age of twelve he was completely blind, but his passion for music brought light back into his life. Here Bocelli reveals the anguish of his blindness and the transcendent experience of singing. He writes about his loving parents, who nurtured his musical interests, the challenges of learning to read music in Braille and of competing in talent shows, his struggles with law school, and his desire to turn an avocation into a way of life. He describes falling in love and singing in piano bars until his big break in 1992, when a stunned Pavarotti heard him sing "Miserere." The international acclaim and success that have followed Bocelli ever since have done nothing to dull his sense of gratitude and wonder about the world. No classical music fan can afford to be without this engaging and humble memoir of a fascinating and triumphant star.
Andrea Bocelli is an internationally acclaimed Italian tenor known for his exceptional voice and ability to bridge classical and popular music. Despite being born with congenital glaucoma and losing his sight completely at the age of twelve following a football accident, he pursued music with passion and determination. He began piano lessons at six and eventually learned multiple instruments, including the flute, saxophone, and guitar, among others. Initially studying law at the University of Pisa, Bocelli supported himself by performing in piano bars. His breakthrough came when his demo of “Miserere” caught the attention of both Zucchero Fornaciari and Luciano Pavarotti. This led to collaborations and a successful tour with Zucchero, followed by his win at the Sanremo Music Festival in 1994, which launched his professional singing career. Bocelli has since released numerous albums, many of which have achieved international success. His 1999 album Sacred Arias became the best-selling classical album by a solo artist, and in 2018, Sì debuted at number one in both the UK and US charts. Known for powerful duets such as “The Prayer” with Céline Dion, Bocelli has worked with a wide range of artists across genres, most recently releasing Duets (30th Anniversary) in 2024, celebrating his career with collaborations including Shania Twain and Karol G. In recognition of his achievements, Bocelli has received many honors, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the title of Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. In addition to his musical career, he is also a philanthropist and an enthusiastic horseman. He founded the Teatro del Silenzio in his hometown of Lajatico, a venue where he performs annually. Bocelli was first married to Enrica Cenzatti, with whom he has two sons. He later married Veronica Berti, with whom he has a daughter. Through resilience, talent, and deep emotional expression, Andrea Bocelli has become one of the most beloved tenors in the world.
Oct 22, noon ~~ I enjoyed this book, but for some reason not quite as much as I expected to. I am not sure why, unless it was that I had seen the movie version just before starting to read and I was a little overwhelmed by the visuals that were still in my mind.
I admire the way Bocelli has approached life. This book is not about a blind man, it is about a man who happens to be blind. That may seem like a subtle distinction, but I believe it is valid. He finds something he wants to do, such as riding horses or playing chess, and he figures out how to do it. He does not go on and on about how he does it while being blind, he just mentions doing it and then keeps on with the story. For me, this reminds me that many of us with limiting conditions usually treat them more matter-of-factly than other people might think is possible. They are just part of life and something to be dealt with, not to be defeated by.
But I am still impressed by the horseback riding. I rode like crazy back in the day but anytime I would close my eyes while in the saddle I became disoriented and felt like I was about to fall off. If I was ever able to meet Andrea in person I would have to ask how he manages without feeling that way too. Or maybe he did feel it and just figured out how to overcome it? Maybe it was just something I felt and no one else would? Who knows.
Anyway, sorry, back to the book. It was interesting and entertaining, but I never could quite adapt my little brain to remembering that the character of Amos was Andrea. I understand the reason for writing this way and the device works fine, it is just that I seemed to always need a second to think 'Andrea' every time I saw 'Amos'. Sort of like translating a second language into English in your mind. You do not really count as a fluent speaker until you stop doing that. In this case, I never became a fluent reader.
I love his voice: a few of his more familiar songs make me cry, but in a good way. The singing is so pure, so moving. Thank you, Andrea Bocelli, for sharing your voice and your story with us.
I LOVE Andrea Bocelli! The very first album of his that I listened to was my grandma's copy of Romanza, that I have since bought a copy of for myself. I also own other albums of his, and his concert DVD's that I own are my special pride and joy.
Bocelli chose to write his autobiography in third person, and his main character is "Amos Bardi." We see Amos from birth to boyhood to pianist to classical superstar. His writing also had to be translated from English, so it may take readers a while to acclimate to this.
I've read two editions of this book. The original edition contains photos: of himself, horses and dogs, his parents, his first wife, family, and friends.
As a great fan of Bocelli's, I did enjoy this chance to peek inside his life.

What a wionderful book, I was really touched by this book, this is a man and a singer that I really admire, I listen to allot of his music and just purchased his latest CD in december 2018, I was a bog fan before I read this book, and even a bigger fan now. A true music great and this book is well written, and very touching in parts, we are blessed to have such a singer in our time.
musicofsilenceYou know me. I love reading fiction. However, I chose to read Andrea Bocelli's autobiography, "The Music of Silence: A Memoir," out of curiosity for this man whose voice has the warmth of a cozy fire, resonance of a cello, and familiar tone of a father's words. What kind of life produced such a singer?
Bocelli's poetic life story begins humbly in Italy. He was not, as I learned, blind since birth, but rather suffered from the disease of glaucoma, which took his eyesight. Knocks and hits during a football match exacerbated the deterioration, until at age twelve he could no longer even see light nor shapes as he formerly could. But Bocelli's life is only flavored by blindness, not defined by it. I found this phrase, which the townspeople said about him, incredibly poignant: "Nature has taken something away from him, but it has also given him something beautiful."
Bocelli's mother was trying to soothe her anguished young son crying from pain, when she noticed her son reaching for the wall and staying quiet in order to listen to strains of music. Acting on instinct, she sought out the source, which was a man singing. From there, the whole family realized Bocelli loved music. They nurtured this love by buying him albums and lessons constantly. For me, this was powerful, to see how he recognized their support and cultivation of music for him from early childhood.
I was also captivated by his faith in the Lord. Words of wisdom filter through this book like rays of light in a forest. Reading it felt pleasurably as if I was watching a popular, happy movie and gradually realizing it was a true story.
Bocelli's mellifluous words (I suspect translated from the original Italian) are poetic, evocative and purposeful. His writing speaks of a depth of soul rarely seen, as well as years of rigorous and classical education (he quotes Quirinius, for goodness' sake!). However, he is still a real person. Bocelli makes mention of first loves and lusts, his passion for horses (who knew?), his extreme anxiety going on-stage but a trickling sense of pride at singing for others, his youthful rebellion, desire to do dangerous things as a young man, and the annoyance of having others pity him or help him unnecessarily for being blind. I was amazed to read about his trepidation before having a child, saying he had never felt the urge to be a father, though the idea of a child interested him. Then, he spoke of the overwhelming love for his children which grew upon holding them that first time. Bocelli speaks of the temptations of the music industry, the long travel, commitment to protecting his voice (no soda, less alcohol, absolute silence on the day of a concert!) and how (before he was famous) the fear of providing for his family (he studied law to have a steady career). He says often how vulnerable he feels in writing this book and baring his secrets and personal life to the world, but Bocelli says he does so in order to help others live fully. To me, it felt earnest and noble.
I honestly cannot fully describe to you the power of this man's language, especially in the Epilogue. Bocelli is no singing puppet; if anything, his richly beautiful tenor voice is but an echo of a profound soul. I would love to read this book again and again.
As I'm deaf I wanted to read a book about someone who has a disability and see how he lived. How he faced it. I was amazed Andrea rode horses.. His parents were incredible in the ways they supported him all through his life. I think that plays a huge part in accepting and not being restricted by disability. When I read his story I don't think about Andrea being blind. He does work very hard to accomplish what he desires. He waited a long time for success we know about in his public life. It was interesting that he writes very personally not about the fame but his personal struggles, family, the people who shaped his life and his own thoughts. To do all that he has done is remarkable enough but that he lost his sight at the age of 12 as well!!! Story worth reading because it's inspiring and helps me not to give up because things can change!
The only book that I can read several times and don’t get bored. It’s so beautiful, relaxing and cheerful. After reading his book, i started to listen his music. He became my fav singer from high school till now. We say that God covered Andrea Bocelli’s eyes by a cloth but kissed his sound meanwhile. After i went to Andrea’s concert in Scotland, I really want to go to his concert in Italy!!!
From Imdb: Born with a serious eye condition that eventually leads to his blindness, Bocelli nevertheless rises above the challenges, driven by great ambitions towards his passion. The silent pursuit of his daily mission continues.
The Music of Silence
Not sure why I hadn't finished reading this back in 2017, I must have gotten busy with work and forgot. I saw it in my "still reading" list on Goodreads and picked up the physical book from my bookshelf. The book was a gift by a friend who is the biggest Bocelli fan I know and had introduced me to Bocelli's music as well.
Although I am not a big fan of autobiogrphies and memoirs, this one was interesting. Bocelli had not been born blind, but his struggles with sight began since chdhood. It is inspirational to read about his motivation to overcome the physical challenges he faced. He learnt to ride horses overcoming his blindness. He passed law and even practiced for one year before finally pursuing his dreams of singing.
As one of the few artists that I did follow in social media, I know that he writes himself, using special tools and apps. And he does write well. This book was insightful to the lifestyle and music enthusiasm of the people in his village and surrounding area, and the translation was good too.
A wonderful memoir by Andrea Bocelli. He studied law at the University of Pisa and never expected to be a classical singer in his own right. He worked at bars on the side in order to sing and play the piano. Eventually, a maestro from Spain became his voice teacher. He knew Andrea had a gift and wished to help bring it out. Andrea married and tried to make a living for himself. He finally had a break when he filled in for Pavarotti at a concert. The rest is history, as they say. He is now married to his second wife and the father of three children. He managed to stay grounded and appreciative of his good fortune, which is hard to do when you reach the fame that he has. I enjoyed reading about his life and insights. I would also recommend the movie made from the original edition of this book with the same title.
I enjoyed learning about Andrea Bocelli, but I did struggle with reading this book. I’m not certain if, perhaps, my struggle was due to translation issues?? Also, I found that transitions from one scene/event to the next were not always clear to me and, so, I felt a bit confused at times and would need to re-read sections. It just wasn’t a smooth read for me. But, I love his voice and music and would recommend this book for fans that want to learn more about his life experience leading up to becoming such a successful and famous singer and musician. I appreciated his obvious love and respect for his parents, his wife, and his children— this was a very clear and refreshing message!
Yes, like every one said its unspiring just like many other stories, but since i sing, this book gave me great strength and hope towards being a better singer and that love and devotion is what makes u great. That ur lifestyle is what takes you towards your passion. And a good teacher is what we all need to bring out the best in us, ofcourse if we are good students. They all have to be in line. I loved the spanish maestros teachings and most important of all SILENCE! In silence is God. And God shall be your guide. Your spirit will be alive and your heart will thrive.
I wanted to like this book more than I did. Unfortunately I got stuck many times because the text didn't have a natural flow to it. The story was a collection of scenes rather than a curated collection of memories. Too many passages left me, as an outsider, to struggle with how much time actually had passed. I'm a fan of his music, but apparently this book was targeted to an audience which had followed his career closely from the beginning.
Wow what a delightful read, from a beautiful performer l love and admire so much .
The Music of Silence is such an interesting read, it gave a great insight into the life of Andrea Bocelli, it was very personal and intimate account of his life and career. I enjoyed it enormously and would recommend this book highly.
Andrea Bocelli such an old fashion Italian man with a voice from God , love him very much , this was such a pleasure to read 🖤
Listening to his angelic voice I imagined him as a kind man, with a quiet, rich live...but, in his book, he revealed all the obstacles along the way to success. I particularly enjoyed the way he described and lived every new love story and...I am sure God ”sent” Andrea to show us that life can be simple and beautiful.
Simplesmente lindo.
I have had this book for 18 years. I have always adored Andrea. His music reaches into the listeners soul as it comes from his own. Reading this book, finally, has revealed the beginnings of his life, struggles, joys, sorrows. Surprisingly, his writing is so poetic.
Andrea is an amazing human being. His story is riveting and motivational. Although blind, he lives his life to the full. He has become a world famous opera star, and an amazing philanthropist. I highly suggest this memoir.
I loved this book and I'm in love with Bocelli! This book is not what you expect ... it is not about his fame and fortune ... it is the story of his youth and struggles. Awesome!!!
