Lich is the newest Dungeon Core to grace the world. But he doesn’t conform to the usual four energy types—nor Air, nor Earth, nor Fire, nor Water. Instead, he is a Soul Core. Glimpses of his previous life haunt his dreams but offer clues to solving the mystery of his bizarre magical affinity. Memories of an undead city, burning light, and an order of terrible crusaders fill his thoughts.
Accompanied by his dungeon guide, Nettle, a bone sprite who doesn’t take her job too seriously, and Baxter, a gheist with a flair for the dramatic, Lich must navigate the trials of his new existence. Expanding and growing beneath a decrepit graveyard, he creates eldritch creatures and twisted traps for unsuspecting adventurers.
Unbeknownst to the Dungeon Core, a sinister force from his past has set its sights on capturing him for an ancient ritual—a ritual that needed a fifth type of Dungeon Core to succeed.
This was a fantastically written story. It followsich, the titular mc, as he awakens as a new dungeon core. He has dreams of a backstory that figures heavily into the plot as the story goes on.
It also features a huge cast of supporting characters. Their is the dungeon fairy, who is hilarious, a second dungeon character, some unusual adventurers as a viewpoint, and a third major viewpoint, the hilarious old guy that runs the town and be omes its de facto mayor.
This has an amazing cast of characters! Lich, Nettle, and Baxter are a hilarious trio trying to craft an undead dungeon. Lich (who can’t remember his past life correctly) makes some fantastic mobs (their names are half the joy - Coffinphase being my favorite). The villain is creepy, the story fast and tense… It doesn’t get much better than this. I highly recommend!
The book is written well enough, but it's pretty bland and feels very YA. The MC is one dimensional and a white knight, especially considering the seeing and events. The story moves slow, and all dialogue reads like a cartoon for kids. Sheltered conservative people will probably like it, but I thought it was lame. There is nothing dark about the story though, except for the undead theme.
Turning A Lich Into A Dungeon Core? Doesn't Make A Lich Of Sense!
Lich, the Lich, is converted into a Dungeon Core tormented by memories of his previous unlife and "death" at the hands of gold armored warriors and a man called Manovi. Unfortunately, Manovi's interest in Lich is undimmed by the passage of time since his soul was condensed into a gemstone and buried in an obscure little graveyard on the edge of the frontier.
The lack of competent, likeable characters. While the cast is diverse and colorful, they are terrible at pulling the story forward. If they can just get their stuff together this could be a very fun series.
