THE COMPLETE SIX BOOK SERIES. Nothing will stop this father from finding his daughter.
Not even the end of the world.
Detective Elijah Wade is on the trail of a serial killer when the skies above Los Angeles erupt into the most spectacular light show humanity has ever seen. And the most deadly. His daughter is in a hospital bed on the other side of the continent, but where does his duty lie now? To her, to justice or to his species?
Astronomer Hannah Redman watches as her colleagues die one by one, victims of a lethal dose of radiation. Can she survive long enough to discover what’s caused the catastrophe and whether it will happen again?
Two sisters arrive at the family cabin deep in the woods for a gathering that never happens. An old woman finds she’s not quite as prepared for the end of the world as she thought and a Mennonite couple remain true to their faith even as the Great Tribulation unfolds around them.
Each of these unique viewpoints has a part to play as the series unfolds.
This series focuses on the individual stories of a range of ordinary people as they struggle to cope with the most deadly event since the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs. Themes include EMP, preparedness and an examination of the true nature of humanity when the veneer of civilization is suddenly stripped away.
Mankind is on its knees, and the clock is ticking.
I write post apocalyptic science fiction both on my own account and with Mike Kraus, as well as space opera and fantasy. And one or two other bits and bobs.
Based in the south of England, I've been writing since my teens, alternating between funny and serious. In the mid 1990s, I became a regular columnist for PC Pro magazine and have written a number of business and craft books over the years.
Fiction is my first love, however - I hope you enjoy my voyages into an uncertain future.
The author has no idea about firearms and it is made clear often enough. Early on a character that is mentioned stole 100 rounds of .22LR from his parents to pay off his debt to a drug dealer. I am unsure what sort of drugs he was into as I never made it far enough to experience his character if he showed up but they could not be all that bad if roughly $12 worth of .22LR could pay the debt off. Inconsistent details about characters and items are all over. A character touched his star necklace around his neck that he has not taken off in ten years. Two paragraphs later when he touches it the thing is hanging from his rearview mirror. He at first was just a normal AirForce reservist. Then as the story progressed he actually is a hot shot ex special operative and top commando number one AirForce star. There are a lot of super uber religious characters that are so annoying in their constant self preaching that I skip their scenes all together. I cannot tell if the author is trying to brain wash me into their beliefs, if they believe all religious people are like this, or they are purposefully making these people be over the top out malice but oh boy it is painful to try to get through. There are the absolute know it all characters that actually do not know anything because the author doesn’t know anything so anytime they come up it is so painful to read what they are talking about/doing because you spend most of the time second guessing yourself and going to look things up to discover that yes you are correct in what you know and the author is just clueless. It is also very clear the author has no knowledge about the subject they are writing about in regards to what is destroying the world. As another reviewer stated you have to suspend your disbelief then suspend it again and then suspend it again. Read their review as they went into all of that. The author fluxes between having the stomach to go into a bit of detail of what happens to victims to barely doing a descriptive half sentence. As if they don’t actually want violence in their own story even if it is a person dying of solar radiation. The author also self censors a lot. A lot of swears are nothing more than 1940s era “Well you f-!” You get the first letter and that is it. “You piece of s-!” And the like. You can write a book without swearing as censorship like this just breaks the read flow and is frankly annoying. Just contributes more to the feeling of non commitment you get from all the other things that pile up. I managed to get through the first book but only because I skipped so much stuff, I can see why this was marked down to .99 but even then I feel cheated.
I read this series, each book following on straight from the other, but it would be easy to read the novels separately. The author includes helpful reminders of characters and situations at the beginning of each book. And each story has a pleasing sense of completeness to it, as each documents one section of each character’s journey.
The series follows a diverse group of characters, in various different places, as they navigate a falling world. A scientist learns what happened, but can’t get the information out. A pastor is sure he knows what’s happening, but trust his own interpretations not the Lord. A gentle farmer learns he has hidden depths. A fierce cop learns he has hidden gentleness. And a wealth of relationships, healthy and broken, play out across the pages.
The cause for global disaster is intriguing. The effects are all too plausible. And the reactions of flawed humans are all too real. Some coincidences seem strange, but never excessively so--and besides, there could always, maybe, be a guiding hand?
These novels were hard to put down (and with six to read at once, I did have to put them down occasionally). A truly enthralling tale, and I’m eager to start on the next series now (though this one is satisfyingly complete).
Disclosure: I got this on a deal and I’m really glad I did.
Nightfall:The Complete Series Boxset - a review by Rosemary Kenny
Six wonderful sci-fi adventures by the remarkable Kevin Partner comprise an incredible value-for-money boxset that you absolutely must not miss.
LAPD Detective Elijah Wade must overcome the most terrifying events the world has ever seen, when a solar EMP (that may have been deliberately triggered), sees day turned into eternal night-time....oh, and there's a serial-killer on the loose, targeting young women, for him to catch too.
Flights, road and rail traffic and all tech-connected or dependent devices come crashing to a sudden halt, leading to mass death.
In addition, the aurora borealis-like lights seem to hypnotise anyone who looks at them, before going permanently blind, which spirals the situation out of any hope of control.
Wade's daughter Hannah is part of the team investigating this Armageddon-like event - is she guilty or a scapegoat?
Does she know how to stop the apocalypse that seems like the end of the world, with her father's help?

I enjoyed the story itself with a few notable exceptions. The number of people from different areas with different backgrounds saying “I reckon” every other paragraph. In my 60 years I cannot remember hearing that outside of spaghetti westerns. Then the usual spelling errors and the writer is obviously not from the US. What the heck is an apex or iron roof? The story was a nice, albeit bumpy ride.
Very interesting apocalyptic tale that was quite different from the usual zombie apocalypse stories that I usually read A radiation storm that decimated the human race and as usual brought out the bad guys The only silly thing for me was that there was excessive comments about rusty vehicles The vehicles would not go rusty for at least a year or even more
One nice thing I can say about this series is that I didn’t pay to read it. Apparently the author doesn’t pay for a proofreader. In addition to many many comma splices, the continuity errors run rampant. The author’s non-American background has a lot of tells, like “16-wheelers” and a lack of detail about weapons. The plot was different for an apocalypse tale. For once the humans didn’t entirely cause it.
Loved the characters, even the badies... Oo they were really bad , the serial killer was nicer!! .lots of little things bugged as in "that would never happen !" Or "grow plants in rediated soil ?" But it's a story .. and who actually knows what strange things could happen in an appocalist ? I enjoyed the series , looking forward to reading " After the End"
Took me about fifty pages into the series but then I got hooked on the story. We’ll plotted and planned out. Enjoyed all the characters and the way the series of books flowed. Plan to read his other books. Read the entire series in three days and looked forward to reading it the next day after waking up. Congratulations on a wonderful story Mr. Partner
A Wonderful Apocalyptic Series without the Zombies
An interesting post apocalyptic series. No zombies, the focused is more on how persons react and changes in the face of impending death. I particularly liked that the female survivors were given leading roles at times and the story included both the good, crazy and bad characters.
I liked the way the characters came together. There were a lot of people that were really evil. The good ones came out on top. I would recommend this series to anyone that likes apocalyptic fiction. I gave this rating because it was hard to stop reading. I spent several nights staying up late not wanting to stop.
A celestial event causes an apocalypse of the deadliest kind. Everything about this was fascinating, horrifying, one shockwave after another. The storylines about several groups of characters, including a a genocidal conspiracy, was heartbreaking, engaging, & saddening.
This is a well written story. I enjoyed all the characters even the bad guys. I kept reading every chance I’d get but didn’t want it to end. It has a little romance, action and adventure. It shows that people can come together in all varieties. It also opens a window into maybe a future we haven’t thought about. Thank you Kev Partner for a great series!!!!
Perhaps it's old school, but using maps in storytelling serves to add texture and richness. Showing the characters' placement and travels on a map pulls the reader closer in and more a part of the story.
A complicated story. Some parts I could've done without.
I wanted to stop but couldn't. A great story but long. Too many different people in too many different locals. Hard to keep up with. And of course Hope still has to come home.
I have really never considered how many ways the apocalypse could play out and this scenario would be horrible. Good story that keeps you reading and hoping those who lived.. would survive
A different take on the end of mankind. Interesting characters, kept me involved through all six books. The publisher should invest more into a good proofreader!
In writing this, I excuse all bumbles, flaws and mistakes so I can give an honest opinion on one of the fastest moving, and involved, story’s I have ever read. The inclusion of characters so varied and a storyline never before encountered by this, normally, dedicated fantasy reader, my TBR is to be now including this author and this genre he writes.
Vivid characters, awesome storyline and fast paced action make it a page turner. Highly recommended reading. I am already starting the follow up series.
