Read another book on AI. This one is an introductory book suitable for middle grade. 5🌟 because I like the graphics & clear explanation. Decent (considering other introductory books on AI) and nothing over the top.
Does what it sets out to do in making AI understood in straightforward language, which is honestly what I was looking for. Oddly the bits about uses and philosophy while interesting were the stuff I breezed over as a lot of those were mostly familiar already.
Although this book contains some good information for beginners, it is marred by the bias of the authors. Howard Gardner's theory of multiple types of intelligence is sorely lacking in empirical support. On the other hand, the general factor of intelligence (g) is not only statistically robust but is also correlated with some measurable life outcomes, such as life expectancy, educational attainment, socioeconomic status, and income, among others. Those who are concerned with "inequality" (of outcomes) should ask themselves what their fair share of other people's fruits of labor is.
Humanity is concerned with being able to control the still hypothetical artificial general intelligence (AGI). But humanity does not like being controlled itself. Humanity is worried that its goals could in future in conflict with those of AI, though it does not seem to care about non-humans. In other words, humans generally do not hesitate to leverage their own advantages against non-humans, even if it means driving another species towards extinction. But when facing something more powerful or influential, they conveniently become concerned with the distribution of power and ethics. But whose code of ethics should be implemented? From a philosophical standpoint, the rise of AI is forcing humanity to, eventually at least, confront its own self-serving bias and chauvinism.
Potentially a useful little book if you don't know much of the terminology of AI. Brings up some potential applications but, being British, it concentrates on DEFINITION and REGULATION, with the assistance of fancy design (although text in often hard to read because it is printed dark on a dark background) and very nice diagrams.
Don't worry, it never mentions the filthiest of terms like use cases, applications, opportunities, entrepreneurship, startups, and making money. You will first need bureaucrats to write copious regulations, using the fears of a few largely inactive but querulous academics as a guide. Horses for courses, as the old saying goes. And by the way, regulations are a great way to collect taxes on innovation. Watch out though, the best British innovations can be readily sold off to American and Japanese companies. Chinese too, if truth be told.
This is the perfect entry-level book for those learning more about AI. A coworker recommended it to me, and it helped illuminate the areas of AI that I'm not familiar with.
The book doesn't delve into deep detail but provides simple definitions that give the reader some idea of artificial intelligence. I was really impressed with the way the book layers the information, beginning with the mechanics of artificial intelligence and moving into the application of artificial intelligence.
The book is relatively unbiased, and I think it is a great jumping-off point to dive into more complex books. For myself, I plan to move on to the narrative history of AI.
I would highly recommend this as a starting point for a journey into artificial intelligence.
Part of Dorling Kindersley Limited’s SIMPLY SERIES, this is a useful book for anyone interested in understanding the basics of artificial intelligence (“AI”). I found the sections looking at AI’s history to be the most interesting as once it gets into the science I found the explanations pitched at a level a little too high for me to follow while the chapters looking at problems with AI (including societal issues) were disappointingly brief.
Simply AI is a highly accessible introduction to artificial intelligence. The book lives up to DK’s “Simply” series style: clean visuals, structured explanations, and bite-sized concepts. It covers the history of AI, key ideas like machine learning, neural networks, expert systems and real-world applications without overwhelming the reader. Good for newcomers to AI or for readers who want a quick, visual guide.
This book provides a quick overview of the field of Artificial Intelligence. There are lots of illustrations with 155 short sections. I read the book in a couple of hours. The book covers the history of AI up to modern day philosophical questions about consciousness and the rights and responsibilities of autonomous AI persons.
This book has been an interesting read - I was able to get a good overview of how AI works - I need to review this book again to take down more great key points - I recommend this read for readers interested in how AI works.
Such a clever little book with truly accessible information on the history, current state and future uses of AI. Would be perfect for anyone trying to make sense of all the current news in this space or to ensure consistent terms and definitions are being used by non technical teams
It has great illustrations and explains all the concepts really concisely and simply. I really enjoyed this as it furthered my basic knowledge and raised some important Philosophical questions.
Too simple; I thought there would be a little more depth from DK. The book starts off decent with some history and explanation of AI formulas, but veers off into some strange logic and talking points. I don't know who this is for, and I can't think of anyone I'd recommend it to. To me, a concise history with a deeper explanation of uses and practices would have been better. The visuals are decent though, save for the parts with dark text on dark backgrounds.
Libro interessante per scoprire i principi base dell’IA e avere una panoramica di tutte le sue applicazioni e possibili sviluppi futuri. Mi sarebbe piaciuto se avesse approfondito maggiormente alcuni temi.
