Drew Strickland has kept up the strong writing in this fifth novel of the series. Elven Hallie, a sheriff in a West Virginia county, keeps getting used to the job in the small community. While he feels a sense of relief that the past few months have been quieter, all this ends when someone from his past returns to Dupray to ask questions. This is further muddied when the FBI arrive to ask about a person of interest who has gone missing. When the feds push the envelope, Sheriff Hallie finds himself in hot water and on the lam to prove his innocence. Who is framing him and how will he be able to prove it before he is jailed and charged with murder?

Picking up a few months after the last novel, all appears to be quiet in the community of Dupray, West Virginia. Deputy Maddison ‘Madds’ Cook has been able to relax a little since her kidnapping and has found herself even closer to her boss, Sheriff Elven Hallie. After Carolina McKay arrives and seeks the sheriff’s help, Hallie is less than impressed, but agrees to help her, if only to keep things from blowing up too much. However, this is not the only visitor to town, asking questions. The FBI has arrived and is looking for Kurt Gormley, who happens to be Deputy Cook’s ex-husband. Kurt’s gone missing since he was last seen around Dupray a few months ago. He never boarded his plane and someone has said that Sheriff Hallie might know something about all this.

After a tip-off has the FBI arrive on Sheriff Hallie’s property to look for a body, he is shocked but willing to help. After a brief excavation, another body is found, one BJ Mount, who has a long and difficult history with Hallie. Knowing that he is begin framed, Sheriff Hallie is determined to prove his innocence, though refuses to let someone else lead the investigation. Fleeing the feds, Hallie begins trying to piece it all together, while the authorities chase him down. Who could want to see Hallie imprisoned for a murder he did not commit? Forced to think of everyone involved and those who hold a grudge, Sheriff Hallie will have to use his team, led by Deputy Cook, to prove he is being set-up. With time running out, Sheriff Elven Hallie may have to admit that someone’s finally gotten one over on him, though he will never stop seeking the truth. A chilling piece that shows Drew Strickland’s abilities once more.

This novel works well in conjunction with the other stories in the series, continuing the strong story arcs that have been created. Strickland builds a strong narrative foundation and keeps things flowing from there, leaving the reader wondering while working on many of the threads that have been developed in the previous four novels. The small-town nature of the series is not lost on readers, but there is a real gritty nature that pushes the story along and keeps the reader engaged.

Elven Hallie remains a strong protagonist in this piece, with more of his backstory presented and worked through as the story progresses. While readers know him as a strong and law-abiding citizen, there are aspects of his personal and professional lives that come under scrutiny with this novel. Readers can enjoy what they discover, complemented by an ongoing connection with Deputy Madds Cook, who is back and ready to save the day. Series fans will enjoy many of the returning secondary characters, including some new antagonists who are out to paint Sheriff Hallie in a bad light. The banter is ongoing and keeps the story fresh, while always providing something mysterious for the reader to discover.

Strickland adds more plot development in this book, building on past novels and adding new story arcs to flavour the narrative. Fast-paced and never one to shy away from controversy, Strickland does just what is needed to keep things moving without getting too bogged down in light and airy moments. This piece builds on a few of the past stories and proves that this series is not meant to be standalone read, as there are too many threads that connect and require some fore-knowledge..

Kudos, Mr. Strickland, for keeping me hooked as I devoured this novel.

Best One Yet
As mentioned in previous episodes of this series, the complex characters in this well-written saga are phenomenal. The more we learn, the more outstanding they become. In this addition to the Appalachian-set series, Sheriff Eleven Hallie himself becomes the one under suspicion, and the FBI wants to put him away. Enemies become the strangest bedfellows in this read as Hallie finds help in the strangest of places while he tries to clear his name.

For fans of complicated lawmen and series' that explore the gray areas of law enforcement, this is a must-read! It's possible to pick up any story in this series and enjoy it as a standalone. But it doesn't matter. Once you realize the depths of secrecy, depravity, and loyalty in this slice of Appalachia, you'll be in for the full series.

This installment had a much slower plot and a lot less violence. Even though I missed Hollis (he was very minor in this one) and I absolutely abhor Mads and her relationship with Elven- this was a much better book. A new female character was introduced and she is tons more interesting compared to Mads. I thought the update with Johnny seemed really unrealistic. Overall this was one of the better books of this series.

Disappointed

I have thoroughly enjoyed the first four books in this series; however, this one sucked in comparison. It was loose. Characters and necessary connections lacked development. Another revision may have remedied this but the entire book cries, "Slow down!" Immerse us in this community so we care!

First four, I was hooked; hopefully, book 6 will bring back the excitement I felt before.

Thank you.

Write Faster!!!

Drew is such a great writer! This time around I found myself laughing out loud several times. I loved the new character and some of her sayings were hilarious. I hate to have to wait so long for the next one. If you love police and FBI series books start with this series. You will not be disappointed.

Gut Feelings

I have read each one of these books and I feel myself becoming one with Elven. It is written in such a way I simply can't put it down. If you want a series that you can totally imagine yourself one of the characters then this series is for you.
I chose it cause I had already started it,and also really enjoyed it.

4⭐️ Elven Hallie stories are always gripping and mysterious. The FBI, an old friend who is now a private investigator, and the Starcher family with their connection to a Mexican drug cartel are all circling around in the story, trying to find answers and get revenge while he is trying to solve a murder and keep himself out of jail.

Sheriff gets accused of murder, wants to solve it himself!

Great read. Can the FBI get any worse. Turns out, one good one not so. Really put Eleven in a tight spot, on the run trying to find out who's trying to frame him and why. Really a good story with some real surprises along the way. So get to it.

Uses F word and other profanity. Narrator voice is on the softer side (softer pitch) so I needed to turn the volume higher. Held my interest. At times there were people who were crude. There is also violence for those who shy away from that. I ended up listening to the whole series up to book 7. Waiting for it to be released on audio. 2.0 audio

I am sick of having to read the F*** word in every conversation. Evidently, the writer thinks that everyone uses language like that but our people don't. I may or may not finish this series even thought I like the characters and the storyline. I probably won't start another series by this author.
Mr. Strickland, needs to clean up the language, please!

I have read all of the Sheriff Elven mysteries and I'm waiting on #6. Drew had me from the beginning. Elevn's relationship with his deputies and the Hollis family, kept me turning pages and losing sleep. I enjoyed each book as the relationships change, secrets are kept, and I was kept guessing.

I ain’t kidding - this was great!

Elven sure leads a weird life for a small town law man. Some characters from past books come into play, a few new characters are added. Elven has been accused of murder and trying to solve the mystery isn’t going to be easy.

Read as an audiobook performed by Madison Niederhauser, about 8 hours. I've read Strickland novels before with mixed response, OK to good. This story was good, well-paced, interesting and added good background to the characters that make up this series. Easily 4++.

Another fun audiobook about Sherriff Hallie. This one deals with a murder victim and introduces a new character. I enjoy these audiobook and stories. The narrator does a great job and keeps me entertained. The stories always have twists to them and a host of good and bad guys.

This book different from the previous books. The plot seemed more intense and the characters acted in unexpected ways. It was a hard book to put down. It seems each book is better than the last the plots more complex.

Abb's

Getting to know the characters more. I wonder what will happen next in July's book release. Don't care for Abb's attitude much, but it plays well.
