Sparks fly when Elairie, a mixed-blood elf living on the edge of society and serving as a night guard, meets her latest prisoner. Strange auras surround them, and a magical gravity draws her to him, despite what her associates might say about his race. But the connection they share comes with a dark side.
When Beluroan learns that he and his guard are Blessed Ones, hand-crafted by the Gods to stop a madman from recreating the Blood Magic of old, his veins run cold. Threatened with a return to the magical slavery such magic commands, fear grips him, and memories of his childhood Master fill his mind.
But together, their potential power frightens even the Gods. Can they overcome the prejudices marring their land and master their new magic in time to stop the man trying to enslave their country? Or will they succumb to their own power?
This literary romantic fantasy promises a gut-wrenching adventure full of relatable characters and magic, Gods and deadly decisions.
Elexis Bell writes literary fantasy and science fiction with a bit of romance and a lot of grit. She focuses on character development and the impact of trauma and mental health.
This is a slow-burning insta-love romantic story where two people feel attracted towards each other from the moment they meet (love at first sight) but it's a long time, with a lot of disturbances and problems, before they finally get to be all over each other, literally...
The male main character, Beluroan, has a scar and it instantly reminded me of the book that will not be named by me but Daniel Radcliffe did cross my mind. The book also reminded me of "soulmates", about which The Symposium talks so well. I won't divulge anymore about this part but reading it was so nostalgic because The Symposium is very close to my heart.
The quote "the journey is the destination" fits perfectly for this one as almost the entire story contains the description of how Elairie and Beluroan reach the war-front from the first time they see each other and the adventures and dangers they encounter on their way. For me, it wasn't about the outside, but the war within themselves; the war to come to terms with who they were and what they'd become rather than to fight the villian who might end up killing an entire species. I found the book to be well paced and interesting, especially how the two discover and learn new magic, and the description of the towns that they visited, specifically Aivrard. I could visualise all the locations mentioned in the book; I love it when I can effortlessly visualise words and Elexis definitely has this writing skill. I even decided to draw Aivrard; maybe someday...
Just like Elexis' last novel, Things Left Unsaid, A Blessed Darkness also has multiple POVs, mostly the main characters - Elairie and Beluroan. This is another thing I love, getting inside the characters' heads to understand what they feel and do. Multiple POVs > Single POV > Narration
Recommended to beginners in the fantasy genre. But this book is for adults (18+) and I would ask minors to refrain from it.
Please don't read this book if you have suicidal tendencies. There is a pretty graphic suicide scene and I could visualise every word of it. I had read the trigger warnings beforehand so I knew there would be something like this in the story. If you feel sad, depressed, suicidal or unhappy in any way, please consider calling in your local/ country's suicide helpline, NGOs working for mental health, friends and/ or loved ones, etc. If you want to talk to someone, my DMs are always open and safe. Hurting might relieve you of the mental pain by making it physical but it hardly ever is the solution to what you are feeling and undergoing.
the pacing of this book was amazing, and i LOVED the magic system and world building, even the characters were interesting and felt fully fledged out. My one main issue here, (hear me out!) i think, is that all the MCs seemed to think of was sex, and (without spoiling too much) for how little action they actually received in this book, it just didnt feel right to me lol.
thank you to netgalley and the publishers for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I loveeeed this book. I loved the characters, I loved the story, I loved everything, well except the sad ending. Honestly though, there was no other way to end it. It was bittersweet. Thanks for letting me read this book. It was wonderful. I enjoyed every second of it. Thanks Netgalley for the arc read!
A great read that was very unique and hard to put down. It ended too quickly. Elexis completely submerges you in this world like the songs of sirens. Every emotion feels raw and the images she depicts are so vivid. A warning to future readers, there is content exploring domestic abuse, violence, slavery, sex, rape, and suicide. I appreciate her warning at the beginning and her words at the end of the book including the suicide helpline. A Blessed Darkness definitely left me wanting to read more from this budding artist.
Dark & Different…still thinking about the story….and how to review it.
Notes: * Definitely a fantasy world predominately composed of Elves of various varieties at odds with one another * Young twenty-ish aged male and female lead characters * Chemistry is instant but grows slowly into more between the main characters * There is a quest that the two must go on and hope to succeed in – to save many elves * There is a Merlin-like sage to help the two learn and hone their skills * There are God/esses pulling strings * Evil is known and definitely a force to be reckoned with * Torture, pain, abuse, mind control, blood magic, murder, and self-harm are explicit and could be a trigger for some * The main action in the book takes place in the last third to fourth of the book * At first I thought this would be a good book for young adult readers then thought maybe new adult when the couple coupled and then…wasn’t sure who it would be for without trigger warnings explicitly stated in the beginning of the book * Rereading the ending…I know why it had to happen as it did but it did hit hard and play with my mind… * It was a bit slow in the beginning * I wonder if this is a prologue to a series for this fantasy world or meant to be a standalone book * This was not what I expected. I loved a previous book by this author so gave this one a try. * Would have liked a bit more world building, mythology-history of the fantasy world, and information about the characters * This could have been a trilogy or series * The author’s comment at the end was a good idea but still think the trigger warning should come before anyone decides to read this book.
Did I enjoy this book? Yes and No Would I read more by this author? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.
It started out really well. The plot was intriguing and the characters were adorable. They instantly felt a connection and watching them awkwardly flirt with each other was so much fun.
"It shouldn’t matter, but my heart aches at the idea of being rejected by her. I never cared about being pushed aside or brushed off in the past."
They are given a great purpose with grave consequences too soon and their relationship became forced almost after that. I would have liked it better if their relationship took the time it desperately needed. But their feelings for each other were beautifully explained.
"Will I ever get used to her? Fear wells up within me. Will I even get the chance? My heart twists in my chest, and I pull her closer."
There wasn't a lot of action as expected of the plot since there was way too much importance given to the MCs trying (and failing) to get intimate on every page of the book. And the ending felt wrong and didn't exactly fit the characters on a level.
I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
I didn't expect this to be part slow-burn romance so that was a nice surprise. The MCs connection from the beginning is so tangible, you immediately root for them. I loved the alternating POVs because it gives you insight into both the characters, not just the heroine which made the story stronger in my opinion. Or maybe I just really liked that it did that. The magic, the characters, the journey, I loved it all. The most frustrating part was their intense attraction making them reach for each other and they kept getting interrupted. When they finally did though, it was great. Their bravery throughout, just accepting what they were made for, incredible. The ending...I have no words. I would happily read more books by this author. As a fellow author, very well done. As a reader, you hit my heart with a sucker punch.
I read this in one sitting! I was immediately pulled in and couldn't put it down. I was lucky to get an ARC and after this book I can't wait to read more by this author! LOVE LOVE LOVED IT If you liked the book Down Comes the Night you will probably like this one too.
This was a bit outside of the genre of books I typically read, so I really tried to go into this with an open mind. I think the potential was there for this to be really good, but I personally thought the first 90% seemed really slow. Many of the adjectives used to describe things seemed over-exaggerated for what was actually happening; for example there would be some intense emotion or action, and then the next sentence they would be sleeping. After a while I got annoyed with that and it really seemed to weigh the story down.
I just don't think this book was for me.

Thank you @thebookscenestours and @elexis_bell for having me on this tour. A blessed darkness is the story of Elairie, a mixed blood elf, and Beluroan, an ex-slave caught for thief, two elves different from the others. Those 2 were created by the gods that rules their world to stop the evil that could start another Blood War. I liked that the writing style the author used was pretty simple even when describing places or other characters. I was expecting lots of heavy description passages but I was surprised to find a good worldbuilding without the heavy language. The book start abruptly, and I was launched into the action without any prior explanations. Now for some books this tactic doesn't work but for this particular book I think it fit ok. The start may have been my favourite part of the book. The first meeting between the main characters was lovely written, with a bit flair of drama and a spark of hot. Things went a bit bad for me after those two found out that they are Blessed Mates. Now I love a story about soulmates and all that, but in this book after that reveal all our characters could think of was s** They were some passages when after a critical thing happened instead of communicating they just went to bang. Those scenes were dissapointing. For me the characters fell flat in between the begining and the ending. I would have loved to see more action, how they would practice and hone and sometimes fail their powers. While that ending may come as shocking I totaly understood why the author choose that path for those characters. It was a really good plot twist that redeemed the story a bit in my eyes.
Thank you #NetGalley for the advance reader copy, all opinions are my own.
I was excited to read this new fantasy romance. It did have a slow beginning, and it took a bit to understand where the story was going. I liked the magic system and the world building. I think the story idea in general felt refreshing and exciting. However, the execution could have been better. I still enjoyed the story for what it is and am excited to see what else Elexis Bell will write.
The main characters, Elairie and Beluroa have instant chemistry and with their lives destined to be intertwined, are tasked with making their way with danger following them to save the land from being enslaved from a villain that wants to use blood magic. Even though there is interesting adventure and romance, this book also covers heavy topics including depression, suicide, death, racism--so readers should read the content warnings before reading.
Big thanks to Elexis Bell and Netgalley for the eARC in exchange for a review.
Elairie is working in a prison, when Beluroan is arrested for stealing bread and brought into the prison. Right away, a connection forms and feel drawn to eachother.
This book has the same feeling as The shadow wand series written by Laurie Forest, with the separation of the 'types' of fae and segregation and class system. I'm giving it 3 stars, maybe could be 3.5. It was a bit drawn out in some parts, and raced through other parts that felt more important. I imagine the second book will fill in most gaps.
Firstly, I want to start off by saying there’s now HEA! I’ve read 450+ books in the last year and a half and this is the second book that hasn’t had a HEA. I honestly don’t know how I feel about that.
Secondly there are triggers in this book that should be noted at the start such as graphic violence, implied rape (happens off page) and also suicide. There’s a note from the author after the Epilogue about suicide but I find that it comes too late. There really should be a warning at the start as well especially since there’s been an increase in suicide cases since the onset of Covid.
I really enjoyed the concept of this book and the storyline however I found the world building to be lacking. There wasn’t enough description of Elairie and Beluroan’s travels and the towns they visit. When I read fantasy I like to immerse myself in the story line and to be able to picture the world as if I’m right there alongside the characters and I just wasn’t able to do that here. The most notable thing about most towns they pass is that they have a sundial in the town square. Everything else feels rushed. A chapter might start with Elairie waking up in the morning and then a few sentences later it’s already the end of the day and they’ve had a full days’ worth of travel.
Elairie and Beluroan’s relationship is instalove from the moment they meet. Which really isn’t my thing and didn’t affect the rating because it’s a personal preference rather than a fault of the book. It is explained in the book and makes sense to the story line which I understand however they do overshare with each other from the get go. They also overshare with everyone they come across. It’s like they have no sense of self preservation and no point stop and think “can/ should I be trusting this person at face value??”.
I also found that their travel companion and mentor Geeran was more of a servant than anything else. He spends the entirety of the book doing everything but training them on how to use their powers (driver, cook, servant, chaperone etc.). I don’t usually delve into the side characters in my reviews but I just don’t understand what the purpose of including him in so much of the book there was.
Lastly I want discuss the spice level in this book. The first 50% is very PG with Elairie and Beluroan only kissing. The chemistry is there; the build-up is there however when they do finally go for their “roll in the hay” or dirt ground as is the case it’s all very YA. Considering how graphic the violence is in this book I expected more from the spice and it just didn’t deliver. Also lines like “ravaged my neck”, “my internal organs exploded” make a prominent appearance during those scenes.
This book has a lot of potential, I think the storyline is unique and different enough to a lot of fantasy reads out there I just found the overall execution didn’t quite deliver. It would definitely benefit from a warning page at the start as well as a pronunciation page (I think I spent way too much time focusing on how to pronounce all the names). If you enjoy an instlove read with darker element and don’t mind the lack of HEA then this is definitely the book for you.
A blessed darkness is a dark, twisty fantasy romance, that showcases with love comes great responsibility & consequences. This book follows our two main characters Elairie & Beluroan who have an instant connection that develops throughout the book and reveals the true nature of why. They are tasked with an insanely dangerous but necessary task to stop an entire country being enslaved by a man wanting to abuse what is referred to as “blood magic” (Mini summary- there is alot more to it but I don’t want to spoil anything)
I really enjoyed this book. I thought that the two main characters had a lot of depth and were really fleshed out. Their romance felt natural to me and the progression wasn’t rushed, in saying that I would have preferred a TEEEEENNNSSYYY bit more steam 😏 ( that’s a me thing) I thought the pacing of this book was spot on for a stand-alone fantasy novel. It didn’t suffer the excruciating “world building” that sometimes bogs down the text. The magic system was really easy to follow and understand.
There is some LGBTQ+ rep in this book also which we love to see, I would have liked a little more from that part of the story and the character Geeran.
Elexis used internal dialogue a lot thoughtout the book which I enjoyed and it gave good context to scenes & allowed the reader to really get to know the characters.
My only real critique of this book would be the ending, it just wasn’t to my taste but can understand that this particular thing is completely subjective.
All in all I really did enjoy this, it was easy to get through and I had a good time with it 😀

I received an ARC copy of this book from bookscenetours in exchange for an honest review 🥰
I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Overall, I liked this book. If you are expecting a high fantasy or a romance, this is neither. It's something between. This is more of a tragedy in a fantasy setting. Readers, please check trigger warnings. I thought the author did a good job of portraying the newness in relationships. I stopped myself and legit thought, "Wow this is definitely a new relationship," at several points in the book. It really reminds me of when you're young and fall in love for the first time and it makes you feel it while reading. If you like the fantasy setting, but don't love world-building, I would pick this book up. It's a dual POV, fast-paced with tension, and kept me reading. Personally, I'd prefer a little more world-building. I also wish there was a little more to the characters. There are some topics that feel like they were just resolved because of the bond between the characters. Because this book is so fast-paced, the details that lead to significant character development aren't there. There's definitely character development, it just jumps very very quickly. I also found myself wanting more out of the magic system. I did not anticipate the ending until maybe the last 100 pages or so, and I still don't know how I feel about it two days later.
I didn't know what to expect as I haven't read anything by this author before. I was pleasantly surprised. The depth of the messages in this book! It's quite something.
On the surface, this could be any high-stakes fast-paced fantasy with a Chosen One theme, but you scratch that surface and out bubbles an in-depth exploration of racism and other forms of prejudice, good and evil and how our choices lead us along either path as well as the capacity for evil we all possess, loneliness, not fitting in and the question of belonging, doing the right thing. There is so much to explore and so many important questions to contemplate.
Bell doesn't shy away from anything, most especially not the truly difficult questions. The ending surprised me. I haven't read a book with such a deeply moving and yet totally surprising as well as honest ending in a very long time. This ending is not a people-pleaser. It is also exactly what the story and the characters call for. It is necessary and Bell has done a great job of writing what was needed. In conjunction with the author's end note, I found the ending even more poignant and important.
I'm really glad I discovered this author! I look forward to reading her other books now and further inundate my tbr list. 😅
I loved the magic system and watching the powers be discovered and grow.It was such an interesting world to read about. At first I was not a fan of the “insta love” that happened between the two but I understood why it was like that after learning more of the blessed ones. I did enjoy the romance moments and how they were more detailed than I was expecting. I also really liked getting the different POV’s, it allowed me to connect with both main characters.
I don’t read a lot of fantasy novels that don’t end on a cliffhanger or have a series to resolve everything. I loved how this book was all wrapped up at the end and while I had a feeling about how their quest was going to go, I was still surprised by how their story ended.
Thank you @thebookscenestours s and @elexis_bell for the gifted copy!
This was so much more powerful than I thought it would be. From the start to the end, it didn't let go.
Main highlight of the book was Elairie and Beluroan's chemistry and it was so so hot. The whole plot and storyline was interesting and a good and different take on magic and elves. The writing was simple and it was easy to read.
The ending, aaah not what I was expecting but I think it was for the best. Also, the epilogue broke me and I'm so sad reading that.
A few things I would have liked to be different, I think although this book was a romantic one, there was just a whole lot of physical need and lust in the story. Like I would have preferred if it would have toned down a little. Also, the major climax felt a little rushed, and in stead of that a few other details could have been spared.
But nevertheless, this was a really really good fantasy read.
I have mixed feelings about this book. There should really be some trigger warnings to start the book off. While there is a letter at the end about self harm, people should be forewarned just in case they don't keep going that far.
While the love story did pull me in and I felt engaged with the character's plight, I definitely think the beginning of the book could use some more background explanations. The end of the book gets much better with this, but the beginning is more of a surface plot, like in a draft.
The pace also starts out a bit slow but gets much better as the story unfolds.
Overall, I'd still recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy romance, even with my mixed feelings.
Elairie is a mixed blood elf and currently holds a position as a night guard. When she gets a new prisoner, Beluroan, she's unsure of what to make of the instant draw she has to him. Beluroan knows what it's like to be a slave, and refuses to go back to being one. The pair are Blessed Ones and must put aside their differences in order to save their lands.
I adored Elairia's character and the fact that she was a night guard and not the other way around with Beluroan. The plot was intriguing and held my attention, despite the slow pacing.
There was a lot of tension between Elairia and Beluroan, a lot of thoughts about intimacy, but not much actual action. That part was disappointing because while this is a slow burn, it really felt like it was less than that.
Fast to fall and slow to burn, the romance between the two MCs is straight out the gate. Which is not usually something I enjoy, but it made sense for this world and creates great tension. It's almost irritating how long it takes for them to "strengthen their bond" (waggles brows) but, the heat of their love for each other is something to envy.
I don't think I've ever devoured a book so fast. The pace itself is quick, which is greatly appreciated. There are a few triggers, but were pretty soft. The action scenes are a little rushed, I'll admit, but they certainly still lend to the story arc.
That ending though… I loved that ending. It was a perfect destiny for them, and I don't think it could have been done better.
All in all, a grand adventure for two star-crossed lovers!
This is the first time I've ever read about elves like this, so it was a nice departure from whatever fantasy romances I've been reading before. Also if you're going to do something close to Insta-love, this is how you do it! Things I really enjoyed: -The Lore of the gods and their looking for every path -The mutual pining Things I would have liked done differently: -Trigger warnings at the beginning -A few more twists -A more rounded out LGBTQ character -A little more steam
Otherwise, this was a great read. I look forward to other books by Elexis Bell. Thank you to Netgalley and the author for an early copy in exchange for an honest review!
I didn’t know what to expect going into this book and I was surprised. A Blessed Darkness by Elexis Bell was a different and a bittersweet read. Bell has created a fascinating world with vivid descriptions. This book was raw and emotional.
This was a dark fantasy with sensitive content. The book is in dual point of view and the chemistry between the characters is instantaneous, but the romance between the characters develops slowly.
I really enjoyed the book and I liked that the author wrapped everything up even though the ending was not what I expected.
A solid FOUR stars! A Blessed Darkness by Elixis Bell is a unique read and extremely hard to put down (I read it in one sitting). The book offered a different take on magic and elves and I thoroughly enjoyed the chemistry between Elairie and Beluroan. I can’t wait to see what comes next from Elixis Bell!
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher.
I had the opportunity to read this book. I really enjoyed it. The love at first site and not trusting that I was real. The Main characters learning about their greater destiny. The tough choices they then made at the end caused me to cry I didn’t want it to end. This book left me satisfied despite the sad ending. Definitely one of my favorite books this year!!
I love the forbidden romance aspect of this so far. I can’t wait to see where it goes and if the world works out it’s prejudices against the fox elves aka blood elves. The book didn’t end like I wanted it to at all and for that I’m sad.
An interesting plot with some triggers (be warned) but enjoyed the main couple with lots of tension but not enough slow burn feel for my taste but still an enjoyable read. I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This story amazed me I wasn’t excepting this book to be so emotional. This author writes about a lot and then pull you into a fantasy world which you feel your in and the characters are great. I found it fun reading about their interactions with each other. The ending is sad so prepare yourself
First of all, this world immediately spoke to me. It gives a lot of high fantasy vibes, my go-to genre, you can't go wrong there. Partially, this came true. The world ís a high-fantasy one, with elves, blessed ones, dark connections and a lot of magic. That is something I completely and thoroughly enjoyed. However, the world-building felt a bit too fast sometimes. I think the author could have taken time clarifying some characters, areas or other crucial things, especially as confusion hit me when villains were discussed (multiple times). The two main characters were both interesting. They had extensive backgrounds that were explored throughout the book. What could have used some slowing down was the love story. This went rapidly from ‘we don’t know each other’ to ‘instant love, let's make out’. A slow burn would have been more my thing, but the quickly developing attraction does make sense in the story. The story itself is fun and it jumps quickly to a quest-like situation, where the main characters of course have to fulfill a near-impossible quest without any tools or knowledge on it. The writing is fast, but easy to read, and the ending has some fast-paced developments into a shattering and shocking ending (which definitely needs some trigger warnings). The ending is unexpected and will give you the chills and let you think about the story for a bit longer. Overall, I did actually enjoy this book. Despite the sudden romance, the story is fun and quick to read, there is a lot to explore and the author could definitely have made this into more books if they’d wanted that. If you are into fantasy with a focus on romance, with instant love, quests and chosen ones, go pick this one up, because you’ll definitely enjoy it!
