‘They became a separate species, a new evolutionary path.’ Splintered minds. A hidden city. Alien evolution directed by thought alone. Seventy years have passed since Kera unlocked the secrets of the dummy node, and the Administration reigns supreme. But all is not as it seems. The Breaker’s lair may have been found, but it’s not what anyone expected. Will the burgeoning power of the Administration be enough to combat the enemy lurking outside Fadin? Will the true nature of the Source finally be revealed? Diyan searches. Yena waits. Paran explores. What of Kera? BOOK 2 OF THE TAPACHE’S PROMISE TRILOGY, SET IN THE WANDERER UNIVERSE. Cerebral Sci-Fi with an emphasis on the ‘Sci’. If you enjoy Hard Sci-Fi, complex Space Opera, and authors such as Iain M. Banks, Alastair Reynolds and Dan Simmons, then this is for you.
James Murdo was born and raised in London, where he still lives. He graduated from university with a Masters degree in Physics, which added fuel to his early love of science fiction. All of James' books are set in the Wanderer Universe.
James also created the Glossary Generator (software that quickly combs author manuscripts to help identify key terms that may be useful to include in glossaries). It can be found and used for free on James' website.
Received as a review copy from Story Origin, this is an honest review. While it took me much longer to read this book... and enjoy it; it was truly worth all the struggle to read it. James Murdo continues to weaves a great, expanse narrative that grows with each book and Echoes of Time has a grand adventure at the heart of it with Commander Paran and his chosen crew head out to capture this "Breaker" individual. I really enjoyed the character of Influxa and what her colorful presence brings to Commander Paran's mission... and how she tries to steer the mission to a different course than what Paran desires... twisting their journey to shocking affect. Echoes of Time beautifully stands on its own while at the same time illustrates the complex story that's still unfolding; and bringing its previous entry, Echoes of Gravity into prominence- tying both books together nicely. Highly recommended.
Thank you @cranthorpemillner for the ARC of Book Two of Tapache's Promise Trilogy by @jammurdo
Book one, Echoes of Gravity, was a five star read for me and a fantastic opening to this hard sci-fi epic space opera.
The middle book of a trilogy is not an easy thing to get right. It needs to be an exciting story in its own right without feeling like it's just setting up a conclusion in the final book.
Happily we're thrown into what almost feels like a new story as events begin 70 years after book one. The Roranians are back! Paran is an elite soldier on a mission for the Administration. Diyan is working with the Vaesians. Yena's whereabouts are unknown to most, and Kera is missing. My memory is shocking but luckily there's a handy glossary with details of the characters, places, alien races, and technology which brings events from Echoes of Gravity flooding back and also making book two accessible to new readers.
I was quickly immersed in the Wanderer Universe with all of its big ideas and themes. Vast machine intellects, ancient civilisations, unique cities and world's, splintered minds and alien evolution.
The Administration reigns but the ruling members don't have the power they think. The true leader will be revealed. An exciting sequence involves a Nesch. One of the most dangerous, adaptable and combative species in existence. Can even the military might of the Administration prevail? An even greater destructive force, the Breaker, is confined to Barrenscape. What is it and what would happen if it ever escaped? What is the nature of the Source?
Revelations, great characters, exciting battles, mind blowing concepts.
Also, where can I get some muvaeyt to chew? The guffawing Vaesians use it to aid concentration and enhance cloaking powers.
An exciting novel which builds on book one, leaves us eagerly anticipating book three and provides a satisfying narrative of its own. Echoes of Time shows how the middle of a trilogy should be done.
First off, thank you to @cranthorpemillner and author @jammurdo for gifting me a copy of the book for an honest review!
I’ve been waiting for book two ever since I finished book one, Echoes of Gravity, last year and let me tell you; it did not disappoint! The book actually picks up 70 years after the first book begins, which I was a little shocked and wary about at first, (I’m not usually a fan of huge time jumps between books) but once I was a few chapters in it became clear to me why the time jump was there and it started to make sense. Once I was sucked in I couldn’t put the book down and finished it in 3 days! I was so happy to be back with old friends and see how their journey progressed.
We continue following the journeys of most of the characters from book one, Diyan, Kera, Yena and Paran, and even meet a few new characters along the way! One of the biggest changes from book one to this one, is that we are following many different story lines and different characters POV’s as opposed to mostly Diyan’s POV in the first book.
Murdo continues sucking us into this amazing world he has created, and truly immerses you into every aspect of the story, which keeps you wanting more. Another thing I loved; Murdo kept the glossary in the back of the book which was very helpful throughout the story and helped to clear up any confusion I may have had.
I don’t want to spoil anything, but I will say this book also ends with a cliffhanger and a big revelation, which makes sense because there will be a third book in this series. I for one, can’t wait!
If you enjoy authors such as Iain M. Banks, Alastair Reynolds and Dan Simmons, then James is for you.
So all the twists and turn and reveals in book 1? Yeah, still did nothing to prepare me for just how deep down the rabbit hole this book was going to go. This is hard sci-fi that tends to lean more philosophical and towards AI and neural networks than the physics side - though there is quite a bit of playing with physics. There is quite a bit of action too, especially with the Nesch. This book jumps between a few characters/locations which made it a faster paced book than 1. Way more going in in general and sometimes the motivations were, well, totally alien. So you have the overt goals and conflicts and then just layers of other motivations and history driving the action and characters. Really engrossing read.
It jumps 70 years in the future, but it also starts right up where book 1 left off with nothing to jog your memory re who these characters are and the rules of the world they find themselves in (which actually are rather mutable). If you haven't read book 1 in a while you might want to at least skim the glossary in the back of the book to refresh your memory or you might feel a bit lost in the beginning. If you haven't read Echoes of Gravity, read that first it sets up this book and is a total trip and a half and worth the read.
Echoes of Time ends with another huge reveal/cliff hanger as book 1 did. It is a pretty satisfying one though as it slots some interesting pieces in place for the final book of the trilogy. I am really looking forward to see how it all plays out!
Overall this book took everything great and intriguing from the first book and made it better. It should go without saying that you ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY need to read the first book here, but book two jumps ahead seventy years, and really opens up the immense, impressive world building of book one. You get a lot more info and backstory on the Nesch (some of my favorite sci-fi creatures I think), the Alpuri, the Administration, the Breaker, the Source, plus more motivations on characters from the first book. Also, we get a pretty great villain. Another thing I really like about this book is the beginning. We get some pretty grisly, horror-adjacent stuff happening. Overall, the first book did a great job starting a new trilogy full of (at first) complicated ideas, ideologies, politics, species, and planets. Book two expands on them expertly, in some very interesting, mind-blowing, mind-altering, high-concept ways. To say I'm incredibly excited about book three would be an understatement. Anyone who's a fan of the first book MUST get this one. Anyone on the fence, I'm personally telling you this is a great hard sci-fi series. Finally, a big thank you to author James Murdo and publisher Cranthorpe Millner for sending me a copy to read, review, and showcase as part of the Bookstagram tour!
A fast-paced, gripping continuation of the Tapache's Promise trilogy!
Picking up 70 years after the end of Book 1 (Echoes of Gravity) we are reunited with Diyan, Paran, Kera, and Yena. And introduced to an intense, cruel, well crafted character Mericadal who leads the Administration (the ruling government) from behind the scenes.
Combining hard science fiction with elements of fantasy, Echoes of Time is a wonderful read guaranteed to take you to another place. Murdo continues to evolve as an author in fascinating ways.
This is definitely a Book 2 of a series; not much makes sense without context from Book 1, and nothing is concluded. But this left me champing at the bit for Book 3. The stage is set. I cannot wait for the finale of the Tapache's Promise trilogy!
This is an honest review as I received a review copy from Story Origin. Tapache's Promise is another great series in the Wanderer's Universe and Echo's of Time does not disappoint. The story line moves quickly and is engaging with ingenious new characters and old heros striving to reunite. There is camaraderie, betrayal, benevolence and ruthlessness. New alliances are formed and greater foes encountered. A mark of a good writer is that the reader can be found at times rooting for and against the same villian. This is a Hard Science Fiction Mystery with every unveiling generating more questions. The book's ending left me wondering and looking forward to the release of book three.
James Murdo https://www.jamesmurdo.com is the author of eight novels. Echoes of Time was published in 2022 and is the second volume in the Tapache’s Promise Trilogy. This is the 82nd book I completed in 2022.
I received an ARC of this book through a promotion on StoryOrigin with the expectation of delivering a fair and honest review. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own! Due to scenes of violence, I categorize this novel as R.
The machine AI Tapache has sent several groups over centuries to find out the truth about the Source. The story continues with Paran, Kera, Diyan, and Yena. An attempt is made to capture the Breaker, but that fails. The effort does uncover an ancient structure lost to history.
I spent 9 hours reading this 478-page science fiction novel. I found this novel a bit slow and confusing. In hindsight, I should have called a Rule of 50 on it. I recommend reading the first novel in the series, Echoes of Gravity, before this one. The cover art grabs your attention, though I am not sure it relates to the story. I give this novel a rating of 3.3 (rounded down to a 3) out of 5.
Really enjoyed this second book in the Tapache's Promise trilogy. This is a truly alien universe and there's much hard science and weird stuff that intrigues and tantalises the imagination and the mind. Despite this there are very relatable protagonists and easily despicable antagonists, (are they really despicable 🤷 maybe part 3 I'll find out ), that inhabit this mysterious universe. Looking forward to reading book 3 soon.
Not quite as engaging as the first book but things do become just a little bit clearer. Though I must confess I'm still in the dark on some things. The characters are more clearly defined and cohesive than previously. The leader of the administration is ... , well you need to find out for yourself. Hoping all becomes clear in the next episode.
An incredible journey! As the series continues Paran, Yena, Diyan and Kera are on a journey to reunite. Each one has been on a journey of self-discovery that stretches their limitations to the max. I can't wait for the conclusion. This is one of the best sci-fi series I've read in at least a decade! Highly recommended!
This is very different and difficult to classify into any one genre. It is part sentient AIs and sentient beings on a planet somewhere. It is definitely hard science. It has many, great subplots going on. Subterfuge galore and lots of action right up until the end. I inhaled it and will read it again.
I cannot explain how good this book is. I did not think it would be possible to top the first book in the series (Echoes of Gravity) with as engaging, exciting and intriguing a story line - but it certainly did! The imagination is astounding and I am on the edge of my seat waiting for the next book in the series. A cinematic portrayal of these books would be incredible.
With a great mix of character, and a good story, this is a solid story in this series. As a scifi mystery, this has some nice twists and I stayed mostly engaged. I look forward to the next book in the series.
Once again the author has done it. Intriguing story that will keep you wondering what could possibly happen next. Draws you in through the well written words that lets you feel what goes on.
