A blizzard threatens outside the windows of Winifred’s log cabin in the woods, but Fred takes comfort in the sounds of the crackling fireplace and the not-so-gentle snoring of her corgi, Watson. Despite troubles as plentiful as the snowflakes obliterating the stary skies, excitement grows as she contemplates her love of mysteries and new possibilities for her life in the Colorado mountain town of Estes Park.
The crunch of tires in the snow interrupts Fred’s ponderings—and Watson’s visions of treats and belly rubs—propelling them into a deadly game. Being underdressed for a socialite’s dinner party is the least of Fred’s fears… as murder is on the menu. The clues might solve more than one mystery, as Fred plays a dangerous game of cat and mouse… and Watson bids farewell to a friend.

I didn't expect this particular story at this time; I figured in a few more books we'd have some answers. Boy was I wrong! This book started with a bang and from there it just got better. Old frenemies become closer because of a terrifying experience they go through together. A terrifying experience that only one person could have thought up. But why did they choose the people in this particular group? What did they all have in common? Every person in the group will be traumatized, but many of them will be better off because of it. Fred, Susan, the Scooby gang, and some new members have to find answers before something else happens that could be even worse, especially for Fred.
Woo Hoo! I would have given Salacious Socialites ten stars as I found #28 over the top. Very clever to use the popular CLUE game as a central theme in the story. Very touching Watson Charles ending. Always enjoy this series but this one could be a fantastic movie with viewers on the edges of their seat and so engrossed they forgo the popcorn and soda. Better yet, the theater could hand out Earl Grey Buns and Dirty Chia to people on their way out.
No spoiler review. This book started differently than I expected and had me guessing all the way through to the end. Fred and Watson were challenged and completed their challenge. Highly recommend this book and that the previous books be read first. The story will have more context and clarity, if read in order. Loved this book!
Mildred Abbott keeps delivering the best cozy corgi mysteries. Each one unique but interesting. Loving characters with a few exceptions of disgusting characters. You must read Salacious Socialites as well as all the books in this series.
The BEST Corgi mystery yet. I am glad I have finished because now I can get to sleep at a decent hour and finish Christmas wrapping before midnight on Christmas Eve.
"Salacious Socialites" is Book 28 of the Cozy Corgi Mystery Series, written by Mildred Abbott. This book was longer than most of the other books in the series, but it was excellently written. The author created a type of Escape Room atmosphere based on the ages of board game "Clue", plus a whole lot of Agatha Christie type mystery, as well. This episode included 7 kidnappings, 2 murders, and the death of one of the furry animals that had been in previous books. The first 28% of the book was about the kidnappings, murders, and escaping from the game before a possible explosion occurred. This episode also reveals some deep dark secrets about several characters, sand Branson Wexler is a big part of the mysteries. As I have stated in previous episodes, my favorite characters are Winifred (Fred), Leo, Watson, Susan Green, Donna Day, and Katie Pizzolato., and maybe not in this order. This entire series is wonderful and should be read from the first book in the series, " Cruel Candy". Even though several bad guys got what coming to them, one of the mysteries was left open for future books, such as "who really murdered Winifred Page's dad several years ago, who was a good cop on the Kansas City Police Force." I have rated every book with 5 stars, and I did the same with this episode. However, let it be known that this entire series deserves a 100 star rating. I will read Book 29 next.
This is by far one of the best Cozy Corgi books yet! It started off with surprise action that I was not expecting. I kept waiting to see if the main character was dreaming it or if it was really happening! I definitely enjoyed all the twists and turns in this book!
I did know who was under the mask before the clues were revealed later, though I can't tell you how. Same way I knew the other twist towards the end. That absolutely did not take away from the plot though! I just have an uncanny way of knowing who dun it before anyone else. :)
I am going to be miserable waiting 3 whole months for the next book to come out! I think I might re-read the entire series to see if I can pick up on any clues I've missed for the big reveal that's to come.
This is one series that I own in print because I love the books so much! I've been reading mysteries and cozy mysteries since I was old enough to read. I only buy books from the authors who impress me the most with their stories. Mildred Abbott absolutely does exactly that!
Always happy to see a new Cozy Corgi mystery arriving on my Kindle. I know it will be an engrossing read and will happily lose myself in the story. As I realized from the first few pages, this was not going to be a carefree read, catching up with favorite residents in Estes Park and of course their pets, as an undercurrent of suspicion allows Fred and Watson to solve a puzzle. Salacious Socialites finds familiar characters in a marathon of fear, testing their endurance and digging into forgotten memories of a childhood game. Far more than the usual comfortable Coxy Corgi Mystery, this becomes a mystery on the level of an Agatha Christy work. Page by page the reader is watching a clock tick down to a potential doom. Residents who barely tolerate each other suddenly must work together to save themselves. While deftly and expertly handling this mystery, Mildred Abbott gives very special love and attention to the usual particular and grumpy Watson. Cannot say enough about this epic addition in the Cozy Corgi series.
What starts as a quiet night turns into multiple kidnappings and a deadly game of clue. Fred is the last to arrive and when Ethel and Mason exit, they are told they have a half hour to solve the puzzle or die. The group works hard and then Fred finds a tunnel so all, but Anna and Viv enter the tunnels to see if they can find an escape eventually, they escape and find a way to get out of the house. There are 2 dead bodies but not theirs, the find one more tunnel and just when they think they are free they find out that there really is a bomb. They are rescued but the aftermath is filled with traumatic memories and fears that there are others involved that might still come after them all. So many twists and turns surprises and disappointments that you are just reeling and then Brandon shows up and things get even more terrifying. Great read.
Another amazing mystery!❤️ This one had a lot of twists and turns and definitely more secrets coming out! This one Ethel Beaker finally got what she deserved and none other than Mason the butler that she had an affair with and a son! He killed her and then hung himself! There were six people in Estes Park brought to the Beaker mansion to play out a game of Clue and if they didn't find the clue they would all die in an explosion! They all managed not to get killed; but in the end Branson shows up at Fred's cabin and makes her go back to the mansion along with Watson at gunpoint and he wanted her to see the final results but at the end got shot, Fred broke his nose again and Detective Susan Green got the privilege of taking him in to be put behind bars! Definitely need to read!❤️
Loved it. As a life long cat 🐱lover, the scenes with Granny Smith touched my heart. No spoilers.....But yea! Well written, with colorful characters that you have to care about.
I have enjoyed every book in this series. We have spent several vacations in Rates Park, and have corgis of our own. That makes these stories come alive for me. They are well written and is is fun to solve the mysteries along with Fred and Watson.
What a great tale of clues, who done it and mystery. Absolutely loved this book. Certainly didn't see that ending coming. Have gotten used to all the characters so this book was very intriguing in clues.
So many questions answered. The story is so well written that you feel a part of what is happening. Congratulations to the author that kept me reading each and every book non-stop!
My favorite Fred and Watson read since discovering this wonderful series! Clue is my favorite board game. Adding this element only made me love this series more. So glad Susan finally got to take Branson down, with help from Fred and Watson!!!!!!!! Glad she and Carla are becoming friends.
