The pregnancy podcasts warned Joanna Baker about the baby blues, but when a near-fatal mistake places the first-time mom under the watchful eye of Child Protective Services, she receives a serious diagnosis.
Postpartum depression. Jo hears the words, yet they don’t make sense. Nothing does. Her blackouts are increasing, and she can’t recall events she’s been accused of.
As she fights to keep her daughter, she discovers cracks in her neighborhood, family, and her own home. With the support of her sisters, she attempts to piece together her traumatic past and uncover who is truly in control.
Jo must battle her faltering mind to save what’s most important—her daughter.
Joanna is the mother to 5-month old Addison whom she loves fiercely. Jo struggled during her first month of mommy-hood, and when she thought she was getting things under control, things started spiralling when there was an anonymous call to Child Protective Services regarding her parenting abilities. Jo is diagnosed with postpartum depression and she starts having blackouts; unable to recall events that could cause her to lose Addy. She begins questioning everything and everyone. Who does she trust if she can’t trust herself?
A novel that delves into the hardships of new parenthood and the weight of trying to be the perfect mother: ”Everyone seems to expect women to just adapt instantly to motherhood. Isn’t there a learning curve like everything else in life?”
It took me a little while to connect with Jo, but once I connected with her, the novel was unputdownable! If I Lose Heris a fast-paced novel with the perfect ingredients to build up to the twisted plot. I had an inkling of whodunnit, yet I would doubt myself each time Jo questioned herself.
Great debut! I would not hesitate to read another of Brianne Sommerville’s novels.

01.05.24 FIRST ARC APPROVED TODAY❣️❣️ THANK YOU, NETGALLEY!! 🥹
Five months ago, Joanna Baker gave birth to her first child, Addison. An adorable baby that grabbed Jo’s heart as soon as she laid eyes on her, the journey still hasn’t exactly been the most easy going. From trouble sleeping to minor blackouts, things just seem to be ramping up in the difficulty department. No matter what she does, Jo just can’t seem to get everything under control.
Then an anonymous tip is made to Child Protective Services. Someone out there has put a voice to Jo’s internal doubts about her abilities as a mother. Mandated to therapy, she’s given the anxiety-inducing diagnosis of postpartum depression. The only problem is, Jo can’t recall the precipitating event. Supposedly, she did something far outside of her nature. Something she doesn’t remember doing in the slightest.
As Jo tries to fight the assertions made to CPS as well as her own troubles in her daily life, she starts to uncover alarming issues within her posh neighborhood as well as her own home. Adding to Jo’s worries are her family members who are starting to look at her with skepticism in their eyes. Is she really losing control? Or is someone just making it look like she is? And if that’s true, who is it and what is their goal?
I was utterly amazed not only by the depth of If I Lose Her, but also by the blindingly good rollercoaster ride hidden between the covers of this epic domestic thriller. From the believable unraveling of Jo’s mental state to the even pace of the plot, I fell in love with this dynamic storyline hook, line, and sinker. Trust me when I say, not only is it perfect for fans of B.A. Paris, but this startling debut will give you a poignant glimpse into new motherhood like few other thrillers have managed to muster.
The characters easily took a starring role in this unforgettable plot. Genuine and true-to-life, Jo especially illustrated how love can seem almost overwhelming with the birth of a child. In contrast to the rest of the cast, who came off slightly more subdued although just as successful, it was obvious that everything centered around Jo and her experience. Vividly described, her collapse was superb as she descended into the near perfect unreliable narrator.
As for that plot, I was simply stunned into silence at the immersive storytelling throughout. With one red herring after another plus my uncertainty on whether I could trust Jo, I found myself questioning everything and everyone. By the time I hit the halfway mark, I was seriously flying through the pages as the foreboding increased with each additional sentence. And then the pulse-pounding climax rolled around. Perfectly plotted and timed just right, I had to stop myself from skimming because I just had to find out what was going to happen ASAP.
Finely layered and filled to the brim with long-standing secrets, deftly obscured lies, and some nefarious schemes, this debut novel has made me an ardent admirer of Ms. Brianne Sommerville. While I had an inkling as to the last shocking reveal, it didn’t take my enjoyment of the darkness it held even the slightest. And while I can’t vouch for the realism of the serious topics explored which ran the gamut from emotional abuse to postpartum depression, they each felt exquisitely well done. So if this one wasn’t on your radar before, I implore you to add it to your TBR ASAP. After all, I’m relatively hard to impress, and impress me this did. Rating of 5 stars.
Thank you to Brianne Sommerville, Rising Action Publishing, NetGalley, and Thriller Book Lovers Promotions for my complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
PUB DATE: March 5, 2024
Trigger warning: anxiety, postpartum depression, emotional child abuse, infidelity, gaslighting, mention of: self-harm, severe car accident
This debut (!) thriller kept me up turning the pages. It has red herrings, lies, secrets, twists and short, easy to read chapters. Although a thriller, it does deal with serious subject matter, including postpartum depression (PPD), emotional abuse and trauma. The descriptions of PPD are realistic and well done (I experienced this with both of my kids). I guessed parts of the ending but it was still well executed and didn’t take away from my enjoyment. Recommended for psychological thriller lovers. I’ll be looking out for this author’s next novel!

I could not put this book down. It resonated with me on so many levels and I was so invested in Jo and her struggles with new motherhood.
As a new mom not so long ago myself, Sommerville's novel transported me to those early days when sleep was scarce and days (and nights) were consumed with nursing and diaper changes. Everything felt foreign, all consuming, and overwhelming. Sommerville eloquently and expertly detailed those anxieties, emotions, and all the insecurities and guilt that came with them. After reading this novel, it was easy to tell that Sommerville is a mother herself and I appreciated her vulnerability and experience in detailing Jo's successes and failures as a mother.
This book had me questioning everything. There were so many red herrings and it was hard to trust my gut on what was really going on. It was really fun disliking some characters and my heart broke for Jo and the lack of support from her partner.
While I did guess part of the twist about halfway through, I still questioned myself and definitely didn't put all the pieces together. I loved how everything unfolded and how Sommerville kept me guessing to the very last line.
All in all, this book was a knockout. I couldn't put it down and I didn't want it to end. This is an incredibly impressive debut and I'm eager to get my hands on anything and everything Sommerville writes!
Thank you to Thriller Book Lovers Promotions, Rising Action Publishing Collective, and NetGalley for the copy.
Fuck. I’m going to need a minute to get my emotions in check after this one. RTC.
This book took my emotions on such a rollercoaster. I felt like I was going absolutely insane alongside Jo. Once I finished I had to take a step back to just let all of those emotions settle. Jo's struggles brought back some painful memories from when my son was born. I struggled severely with postpartum depression and anxiety so at times Jo's negative thoughts became a bit difficult to read, but I felt as if because I had my own personal experience's similar to hers I appreciated them and her story so much more.
I thought I had everything figured out about halfway through, just to find out that I was on the complete wrong track.
Fantastic debut novel. I cannot wait to read more from this author in the future.
Rating 4.5 stars rounding up to 5 stars on Goodreads.
Wow, I loved If I Lose Her! It’s so relatable for every mother, the exhaustion that comes with having a newborn/infant and I was hooked the entire way through. While I suspect the culprit, I kept having my doubts. I truly gasped at the end and could not believe what I was reading. The last chapter was completely mind blowing 🤯 and added the gigantic cherry on top! I can’t wait for more books by Sommerville. I was just engrossed in her writing style and I couldn’t put the book down! This is the type of book that every psychological thrill loving fan wants to read!
Do you self a favor and add this psychological thriller to your TBR because you are in for a treat!
****Many thanks to Rising Action Publishing, Brianne Sommerville, and NetGalley for a gifted copy in turn for an honest review.
This was such a great book. It was so good, that at times even I felt like I was losing my mind a little. It shows a very real and relatable side of motherhood and brought back a lot of memories. It was a little slow to start with but it very quickly changed to a flat out thrilling read. I'm not too sure at what point I figured out what was going on and who was involved but I managed to get there before Jo did in the story. Another new to me author this year and I'm excited to read more.
I was blown away that this novel is a debut. Sommerville will be one to watch out for!!!
I loved the main characters were named after Little Women, which is one of my all time favorite novels.
Jo and her husband JP are going through a rough patch with a new marriage and their baby Addy. JP works long hours and Jo is having a hard time adjusting with their recent move.
Jo is a new mother who is suffering from depression. She has fought this her most of her life and her mother died when she was younger. Her sisters Meg and Amy are there to dote on their niece Addy.
This novels chapters alternates Jo’s life as a teen and as a new mom. This helps explain Jo’s depression and relationship with her sisters.
Thank you Thriller Book Lover Promotions and Brianne Sommerville for this advanced copy. This one is available March 5, 2024. I will be looking for her next one.
If I Lose Her is the debut novel of Canadian author Brianne Sommerville. It is a domestic thriller with twists and tension that also explores important themes of new motherhood - the exhausting demands, the absolute joy, and the impact of postpartum depression.
The story is told in alternating timelines. In the present Jo is a new mom and loves her adorable four-month-old daughter but is finding motherhood challenging and often overwhelming. Her stress compounds when an anonymous caller makes a complaint to Children's Aid saying they saw Jo's daughter left outside alone in the heat of summer. Did Jo leave her outside? Are other instances Jo's fault? Readers will question whether Jo's mental state is to blame or if there's something else going on.
The second timeline takes readers into Jo's childhood with her two sisters and their abusive mother. The verbal abuse against Jo was tough to read but gives readers a clear understanding of how those early relationships have impacted Jo's life and her view of motherhood.
While slow to start, the secrets, lies and building tension will pull readers in and the short chapters will keep them reading 'just one more chapter'. I guessed the big twist early on, but Sommerville's red herrings made me question my initial assumption and I found the ending to be satisfying.
Twisted, dark and tense, this was an impressive debut that also brings to light the struggles some women face postpartum and will encourage great book club discussion. I eagerly look forward to reading more from Brianne Sommerville in the future!

This book was a little slow to start, but by halfway through I couldn't put it down. A strong 4 star read, that I'll be reccomending to other readers. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this book.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC!
Sometimes what you really need is a book that is unrelenting and is, realistically, just a straight thriller with all the twists and turns you could want. This book is exactly that. I ended up devouring it it in a single sitting with no breaks - I just wanted to find out what happened.
While I did have a feeling about the ending, I will say that there were some strategically placed red herrings which worked really well. They were certainly more than enough to keep readers guessing, and the plot twists are definitely heavy ones that were written really well.
I also really appreciated the focus on postpartum depression and how well it was described and examined. I don't know how reliable our narrator was in the end, and that's okay - it did come across really well, and it keeps you guessing as it goes. It was definitely done really well.
I do think that there could have been a little more looked at with some of the relationships in the book, but all in all this was a solid four star thriller.
"If I Lose Her" by Brianne Sommerville is akin to a lifetime movie on a cozy Sunday afternoon. Joanna Baker, is a first-time mom battling postpartum depression and struggling to retain custody of her daughter amid accusations she can't comprehend. As someone who personally faced postpartum depression, I resonated deeply with Jo's frustrations and connected well with her character. Despite her perceived darker side, I found myself willing to defend her at all costs.
The book maintains a good pace, keeping the reader engaged as they breathe in the drama and gossip surrounding Jo's life. The timeline shift to Jo’s earlier life sets a good background for how her life was growing up and her struggles as a new mom Supported by her sisters, Jo attempts to piece together her traumatic past and identify the true source of the chaos in her life.
As the story unfolds, the book keeps you guessing with multiple suspects, taking unexpected twists. Towards the end, revelations about the responsible party are both shocking and not entirely surprising. A well-deserved 4/5 stars. Special thanks to NetGalley and Rising Action Publishing Co. for providing the advanced copy.
Strong 4 and a half star read for me! I thought it was brilliant. Excellent writing style and the author kept me on my toes/intrigued throughout the whole book. I will absolutely recommend this book to my fellow thriller lovers after it is released and will be keeping an eye out for any future works by this author. Definitely add this to your TBR list!
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I loved this book! Sommerville has elevated the unreliable narrator trope to a new level by using the (scarily relatable) overwhelming exhaustion of new motherhood, coupled with PPD, as the underlying factors in our girl Jo’s confusion, terror, and paranoia. She captured the frustration of having a (shithead) male partner who just doesn’t get it, and who has remained largely unaffected by the monumental changes to EVERYTHING that women experience after giving birth. Add in a horribly traumatic childhood with an abusive mother and complicated relationships with her sisters, and it’s zero wonder that Jo is losing her goddamn mind. Fantastic red herrings throughout the book left me wondering wtaf was going on until the end — well done!!!
Sommerville is definitely one to watch - I’m blown away that this was her debut, and I’m so excited to see what twisty, exciting, disturbing situations she comes up with next!
* thanks to Thriller Book Lovers Promotions and Rising Action for the review copy. IF I LOSE HER publishes March 5, 2024.
Jo knows she will do whatever it takes to protect her baby. But why is she constantly blacking out and struggling to remember things? Jo knows it could be postpartum depression but there's something more that she cannot explain. When her baby is found alone outside, Jo has no recollection of leaving her there. With Child Protection Services called in, can Jo keep on the straight to prove she is a fit mum?
With alternate timelines, we follow Jo as a child/teen as well as present day. I loved hearing about Jo's grim upbringing and loved how the author had me guessing Jo's state of mind several times. I thought I had the storyline figured out around the 75% mark but in the end, I was proven wrong with the ending being quite a shock!
Congratulations Brianne Sommerville - this was an amazing debut novel! I am really looking forward to seeing what you come out with next.
With huge thanks to Thriller Book Lovers Promotions and Netgalley
WOW! I FLEW through this book! I could have finished it in one day if I didn’t have things to do. This book is full of gaslighting, it made me so mad and I didn’t know who to trust or believe! Someone calls CPS on new mom Jo for leaving her baby outside in the heat. Jo doesn’t remember doing this, or any of the other numerous things she does that would make her an unfit mother. She had a terrible relationship with her own mother and wonders if she could really be doing these things without her knowledge. Go into this one with as little info as possible and enjoy the ride!
This is the first book for this author and it takes you by surprise. It is a real page turner, and you won’t want to put it down. Is Jo doing all of these things or if somebody else? You will never believe the ending. This author keeps you guessing, till the very last page.
This slow-burn thriller focused on one POV character named Jo in dual timelines between her childhood and adulthood as a mother herself. Jo's struggles feel real in both timelines as she copes with how her mother treated her badly and not wanting to treat her baby daughter the same way. I liked her battle with low self-esteem, and the outer conflicts surrounding her with someone seemingly having it out for her combined with a less than supportive husband.
Huge thank you to NetGalley, Rising Action Publishing Co., & Author Brianne Sommerville for the opportunity to read this ARC - I absolutely loved it.
The story follows a new mother as she is grappling with learning the ropes of motherhood while simultaneously trying to come to peace with her troubled past with her own mother. The emotions in this story were so raw - and as a mother who struggled quite heavily with postpartum depression myself, this story hit so close to home in all the right ways!
The twists in this storyline were PERFECT, and when I tell you that my jaw was on the FLOOR when the ending came, and all things were revealed, I'm not exaggerating.
I loved this book - and absolutely encourage you to read it as well!!
Thank you the publisher and Netgalley for my e-ARC of If I Lose Her!

This was such an enthralling read right from the very start! I went in blind, and was so glad I did, because I really didn’t know what was going to happen next. The entire time, I was half on Jo’s side, and half wondering if she couldn’t be trusted. I suspected other people throughout the story though, and wondered if it could be one of them. This story was also really relatable to me as a mom. I remember those early days of everything blurring together and feeling like I was losing my mind, too. Overall, this was a really fun psychological thriller that I highly recommend binging!
This was a bingeable read that kept me entertained and turning pages.
Joanna Baker is a new mother trying to deal with her postpartum depression. She's been having blackouts and not remembering if she's done things she's been accused of, like leaving her newborn outside unattended in the heat. Someone has called Child Protective Services on her, and they are now keeping a watchful eye. Mandated to therapy, she calls her former psychologist to set up an appointment. This woman knows about her traumatizing past of emotional abuse from her mother and has helped her in the past. But it seems her mental state is not the only thing having problems. She's starting to see cracks in her marriage, family, and neighborhood. Is Jo losing her mind? With the help of her sisters, she must try to regain control and save what is most important to her, her daughter.
Told in dual timelines of Jo's childhood and the present, this book will take you on an emotional roller coaster. Jo's relationship with her mom and her struggles with postpartum depression are heartbreaking. The drama and suspense will keep you reading on, and you won't want to put the book down. There are twists you won't see coming, and the ending will have you shocked. This was a great debut, and I can't wait to read more by this author. I definitely recommend.
The book has been narrated in dual timelines. The writing is gripping and characters are interesting. This follows the odyssey of Joanna Baker. Addy is her daughter and she is going through Postpartum depression. She had a traumatic past. She didn’t get along with her mother and the fear is filling her mind what if her daughter Addy will also not get along with her. Jo’s mother death was traumatic and mysterious, there mother-daughter bond wasn’t good. She has two sisters; Amy and Meg. Her husband JP often go on business trips. With time Jo’s blackout increases and the worst happens when someone from her neighbourhood complains about her being an unfit mother for Addy to Child Protective Services. Her suspicion increases when her mother in law arrives and stays with them. And the same things repeats with her that has happened in her past. Her suspicion grows as she tries to piece together the mystery. Is there any person who is trying to prove that she is not a good mother?
The truth is twisted. I was suspicious of some characters in the beginning and as the mystery slowly unveiled, I could finally figure out the truth. The author wrapped it up so well. The ending raised some questions in my mind. I would highly recommend it. The author has explained pregnancy and Postpartum depression so well.
Thanks to the Publisher and Author. I am grateful to book tour organiser as well.
Joanna is a new mom struggling with postpartum depression, blackouts, and lack of sleep. She’s accused of neglectfully leaving her baby outside on a swelteringly hot day. She can’t remember doing it, but it must be true because now CPS is involved. Her husband JP works long hours and is out of town frequently, and things have been a little rocky in their marriage. Fortunately, Jo’s sisters are there to support her and her mother-in-law is helpful… maybe a little too helpful. Who can Jo trust when she can’t even trust herself?
This impressive debut novel is not just suspenseful but also deeply emotional. The author’s portrayal of PPD and new motherhood is nuanced and sympathetic, and very relatable to someone who has been there before. The isolation, the days blurring together, and the brain fog are all captured perfectly. Jo’s character is fascinating; as much as I felt protective of her, I also didn’t trust her because she’s such an unreliable narrator. There are plenty of twists and I just had to know if Jo was harming her baby girl (accidentally or intentionally) or if someone else had it out for Jo and why. Perfect for fans of The New Mother by Nora Murphy!
Many thanks to NetGalley, Rising Action Publishing Co., and Thriller Book Lovers Promotions for providing me an advance copy of this book.
New mom Jo is overwhelmed and after a terrible mistake, she finds herself being investigated by Child Protective Services. Jo did not have an easy childhood, as her own mother was not very loving to her and died when she was young. As a result, Jo has suffered with her own mental health. But nothing could prepare her for the postpartum depression that hits when her baby girl is a few months old. Nothing makes sense anymore, and Jo can’t remember events that her husband and sisters tell her happened. Feeling exhausted and out of control, Jo must piece together what's happening around her. But how do you know who to trust when you can’t even trust yourself?
I am always drawn to books focusing on new motherhood and having gone through postpartum depression myself, a lot of what Jo went through was relatable for me. Thankfully though, in my own experience, I had a great support system and didn’t get to the point that Jo did. The author did a very respectful job at portraying what goes through the mind of a new mother who is sleep deprived and suffering from postpartum depression as well. I was quickly drawn into Jo’s story and remembered those early days of motherhood, where sleep is elusive and you question everything. Though I had an inkling about halfway through what the major twist was going to be, that didn’t stop me from enjoying this book in the least. In fact, I couldn’t put it down; it was everything a fast-paced psychological thriller should be and had me glued to the pages. I can’t wait to see what this author comes up with next!
Thank you to Thriller Lover Promotions, Brianna Somerville and Rising Ation Publishing for the ARC! “If I Lose Her” will be released March 5, 2024.
This review will be shared to my instagram bog (@books_by_the_bottle) shortly.
This was a standout domestic suspense debut for me! I love a good early motherhood, mental health thriller and this one had the reader wondering if the mother was going crazy or being gaslighted by her husband, the neighbor or possibly her MIL. Twisty and at times dark, this was great on audio and perfect for fans of authors like Ashley Audrain. I can't wait to read more by this new Canadian author!
I really enjoyed reading this debut novel. There is just enough suspicion surrounding every character that you can’t quite decide whether your guesses are accurate or not as to what is actually going on here.
Jo is a new mom who appears to be possibly suffering from postpartum depression. Or is she? She has lapses in her memory and seems to black out at times. She is insistent that she is not guilty of the random, unsafe situations that appear to be occurring around her. But…what if she IS guilty?!
Each character has their flaws that makes them seem unreliable, which, in my opinion, makes this such a great read. You really have no idea who you should be trusting or believing.
What an incredible debut thriller! This is a fast paced novel about a new mother struggling not only with post partum depression but also with memory loss. My attention was grabbed from the start and I flew through this one so I could know how it would end.
I can’t believe this is a debut, it is out March 5 and you need it on your list.
Thank you to Thriller Book Lovers Promotions and Rising Action Publishing for the ARC to review.
Well that was a wild ride! When I tell you how frustrated I was with our “unreliable” narrator until the bitter end when everything came into focus and WHAM - did not see that ending coming. Funnily enough, I’m re-reading the source material at the same time and honestly… I see it.
I can’t believe Bri wrote a book, is on her second, and has been raising 3 lovely children. I’m proud of her accomplishments and even more proud to call her my friend. Love you and can’t wait for the next one.
