All Claire wants is a thin body and her dream man.
Is that too much to ask?

With her divorce pending and a new job on the horizon, Claire Sterling is tired of being the Fat Girl. With the help of her gay best friend, a body image coach, a new fitness regime, and lots of wine and snark, she sets out to find her Happily Ever After just in time for her fortieth birthday.

Will she get the body and the man of her dreams, or is she forever destined to be the Fat Girl?

Authors' Note: Fat Girl is the prequel to the Romance in Rehoboth Series. This funny, snarky chick lit book has elements of romance, and when you finish, you can continue Claire's story in Music Man, Romance in Rehoboth #1.

This was not my usual type of book to read. I'm a guy, and I don't generally read chick lit. Keeping my attention usually requires spaceships and wizards. Knowing full well that I'm not the target demographic, I can say this: if more chick lit was like this, I'd probably read more of it.

Claire Sterling is a self-admitted fat girl struggling with the aftermath of divorce and getting back into the dating scene. We follow her over the next year as she pursues a "reinvention" of herself, both internally and externally. It's a crooked path, as paths usually are in life.

The book has its poignant moments. Mostly, though, it's consistently funny--and in a mildly geeky way that I enjoyed. Claire is self-aware, but often brutally cynical. She's sometimes bold and occasionally cruel to herself. In other words, she's a bundle of contradictions like a real person. The author clearly drew on personal experience, and it pays off. I rolled my eyes at Claire on occasion, and yet I have so many women friends just like her. I definitely felt like I was getting some authentic insight into the complications of a mid-life course change.

If I have any real criticism of the book it's that Claire might not have reinvented herself as dramatically as I might have predicted by the end. But then that might be the point--that the inner transformation is always a bit more profound than external transformations. How we view ourselves is so much more important than external things.

In short: a quick, frequently funny read even for a dude. This dude, at least. I hope the author follows up with Claire again in the future.

To often it is the storyline which engages me rather than the authors skill. I have to say the opposite was true in Fat Girl. In another writer's hands this plot would have quickly dried up, but K.L. Montgomery has made it engaging, and funny. I lol'd heartily several times, between banging my head on the wall in frustration at the main character. But oooooh the satisfaction when we get to the end :)
On another note, the authenticity of this book is great. I would completely recommend Fat Girl to people who struggle with their weight, because though humorous, the underlying breakdown of the main character's mentality is really interesting. I feel a lot of people with these issues could relate to Claire's plight.

I would truly love to see what else Montgomery has to offer! Fat Girl is well-written story with very real issues for a lot of women.

Mildly entertaining, nothing I’ll remember a few weeks from now.

Claire writes a blog about her life as a fat, recently divorced woman. It’s navel-gazing, mundane, and not nearly as funny as she thinks it is (and her Overuse of Capital letters Drove Me Crazy); yet she scores a column in the New York Times.

Claire is one of those characters that everyone just LOVES immediately, both men and women. I didn't find her very likeable. One thing that really bothered me was how Claire replied to guys who contacted her via a dating site and her descriptions of some of the dates she went on, all of which she shared in her New York Times article. Much of this was really mean-spirited and judgmental; and would very likely be read by the guys involved since she tells everyone she's a writer. Nice empathy from someone who was traumatized for life by mean comments made towards herself because of her weight issues.

That reminds me of how much I hated Tina Fey’s book, Bossypants, where she spent a LOT of space describing her witty replies to people who had criticized her in some way. It seemed spiteful and pathetic in Fey’s book, and the same here. Both insecure women using a public platform to get revenge on people who were mean to them.

I enjoyed this book. Was it for me? Not really. I have never really gotten into "chick lit" and I hate it when people call themselves "fat" I think it is not progress to act like that word doesn't cause so many people a lot of pain and joke about it. Now that my complaining is over. It was a well thought out story and had some pretty funny parts. "Chick Lit" fans will enjoy.

Fat Girl (Romance in Rehoboth #1) by K.L. Montgomery was a fun, entertaining, inspiring, feels invoking read that has brought me full circle.. I say that because I have read all of the other books in this series before this one.

As I have said in my intro, not my first read by this author, even though it should have been my first, what can I say, I follow the beat of my own drum. That and all the books in this series reads a stand-a-lones, but has reoccurring characters. Needless to say I knew how this story ended before I got to it, but it didn't ruin the magic. Instead I got to see how on my of fav power couples got their start.

I love Claire, everything about here I love. In the other books I seen the aftermath of her finding herself, to see this side of her was not only a teat, but I got to knew her better as a character. As a bigger girl myself, (not always, my weight has always been up and down.. damn sweets) I'm currently own my weight lose journey, doing it right this time. I'm goal to be healthy, strong and happy. Reading this book has hit home with me, and in truth I wish I would have read it sooner. I connected with Claire, I know her struggles and damn some of things that went through he head.. I can relate. It's so real it makes me feel this book was written with personal experience, or researched so well no detail was spared.

Not only was this book like a ride through my read, it was funny as hell. My god, I was laughing out loud. In truth, though the other books in this series do have humour in them, this book, topped that. Mixed with superb writing and story telling I can tell you this book is a 5 start all round. There is love very sweet brewing love story in there as well.. but I'm not going to get into that cause I know too much! But it's worth the read, you will be fan-girling over the man that steals her heart.

So with that said, please take my super high recommendation that you will fall head over heals with this unique, heart lifting read.

Happy Reading

I loved this book. As someone who has struggled with my weight over the years, I can completely relate to Claire and her woes.
Claire is turning 40, and newly separated from her husband and living back in her childhood home- where all was NOT rosy for her growing up. That struggle is something else I can relate to.
Parts of the book made me seriously laugh out loud, and at times I felt ashamed and angry for her situations with past demons, men, and family strife.
I think Claire and "Fat Girl" are timely with all the bullying and fat shaming in society right now, and truly, this is a novel we can all relate to in one regard or another.
The writer's style was like sitting down for coffee with an old friend- very welcoming and easy to get into. I highly recommend this novel!

I think I was the target market for this novel, right age, right body shape, right history and still it just did not wow me. It took longer to read than I expected and it was just missing the humour I hoped to find - just a bit too self deprecating for my tastes.

I thought the characters were good but not great - original but not weird but somehow it just didn't quite hang together for me. I don't know if it just read too much like a blog and less like a novel or I just wasn't quite "getting it"

I couldn't fault the writing. It moved along at a good pace and was descriptive enough but also didn't really wow me. I don't know if I can identify what was missing at all but it might just be that I am done with the reinvent/love genre for a bit. If you like the description and these sorts of stories I don't think this is a bad example but for me it didn't quite hit the spot. It might just be me though.

I went into this book thinking it would be a fun read...which I was correct in some respects. I do not like the way she looked at being "fat"... being a larger woman myself, I am extremely active...and work out...and I am still large...it is just what cards I was given.
Claire is a unique and fun character, but her self loathing was a bit much for me.
Some may enjoy this book... but it just wasn't it for me.

This is the first book I have read from this author and wow she blew me away. I love a good rom com but this book exceeded all my expectations. This is the first book of the Rehoboth series and this was the perfect beginning to a series. I could not put this book down. These characters kept me up at all hours of the night. It only took me a little over a day to devour this amazing story.

Claire Sterling has always had problems with her weight. She thought that she found her one but now she is signing her divorce papers and what makes it worse she is almost forty. Claire is tired of being known as the fat girl. She reaches out to her best friend for some help. He takes her under his wing to get her more healthy. Claire tries to put herself out there with a dating app but all she keeps getting are toads not her Prince Charming. She is almost feeling hopeless when she gets a message that changes her life. Will Claire find her happily ever after or will she just end up being the fat girl once again?

I absolutely loved this book. The storyline has it all romance, humor, struggles, and healing. You will fall in love with all of the characters. Claire is a great mom and has some spunk. She doesn’t let anyone try to bring her down. This character is very inspirational to me. I’m also a mom that has gained some weight and now I know that I’m not alone. She made me feel better about myself. This talented author made me laugh and cry throughout Claire’s journey. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

This book is written in single first person POV, and I am not a fan of that. But since it was free, I read it to the end - although I admit, there were parts that I skimmed through precisely because of this writing style.

Good job on addressing the real issues that Claire faces. That's what the two stars are for.

I didn't find the humour particularly clever. Just to point out one thing that irritated me was the use of too many similes. I got the feeling the writer was trying to put as much as possible into the story. It required better editing.

Now, I know that one can make up stories in a novel, but with certain things, these made-up stuff needs to be believable. I know the standard of The New York Times and I cannot believe that the paper would ask a blogger (a blogger!) to write a column. Even if that were true, the paper would NEVER print a column with glaring typos!

A Kindle free read, this story about a recently divorced writer and mom heading to her 40th birthday was ok, but reading this book right after finishing Beauty Sick was weird, because it's so often an illustration of how much time and headspace women always give up to how they appear to others. In fact, that's most of the book. I finished it, so it wasn't bad- I suspect I won't remember this book within a year, though. Just 2 stars.

Felt compelled to read this because (1) I am a "fat girl/woman". (2) I live in Delaware, the setting of the story. It was fun to know many of the places the author referred to and the local/state jokes.

Told with equal amounts of humor and understanding of the disordered eating struggle, I knew this author walked the walk. Although I do not agree with everything (can there really be such a thing as an eating disorder survivor?) I give this book high marks in many areas...in touched on lots of tender places for me.

I don’t know why this is marketed as a romance book. The romance maybe started to pick up after 50+ plus percent of the book. Another thing is that I was so confused at the narrative of the story. It would switch perspective and it started getting old. This felt more like a stream of consciousness then a romance story. I won’t be continuing on with this series.

Food , but I didn’t love it. Surprising at times , and sweet, but also redundant at times. It ended strong. And she’s a funny author. Not thinking I’ll continue in series though.

KL Montgomery – Fat Girl

Not really what I was expecting – this book got a Marley and Me (Movie) vibe where the narrator writes a column where she shares her stories, only in this case she’s fat, about to get divorced, and has mommy issues.
It’s actually a pretty good book, though I have to admit it’s not for me, and there are really comic scenes.
The characters are ok – realistic enough that I can imagine this happening to someone in real life, and I’m pretty sure there are a lot who are going through the same thing.
The plot – well, it’s sort of hard for me to rate the plot since it seems like reading someone’s diary.

The pace and ending are both ok.

Not so great so far. I've realised that I honestly hate characters that feel the need to mention sarcasm to describe themselves and/or the things they enjoy. It's annoying, overused and often times the things they refer to as sarcasm is not actually sarcasm.

****Edit***
Self insert characters can get annoying because authors almost never handle them well. Claire was not likable at all. I felt bad for everyone who had to interact with her. I felt bad for the ex husband because I can't imagine how horrid it would be to be married to someone like her. Everything about this book was meh and I hated it.

I absolutely loved the writing style of this book! Fun read!! But I did finally get bored with the main character putting herself down throughput this book. She sounds like an amazing person! Someone that I would love to be friends with!! It really is a shame that we women are ashamed of our size. We are who we are!! We should be proud of who we are - inside and out!!

This book. I am not gonna lie, I struggled hardcore to get into it for about 75% of it. I didn't identify with Claire besides the whole online dating shenanigans. It did end well and by the end I did enjoy it but it was just not my cup of tea. It gets four stars though because it was written extremely well!!

*** WARNING SPOILERS *** Fat Girl by K L Montgomery gets 5 fat stars from me! Fat Girl features Claire Sterling who lives in Lewes, Delaware in her parents home with her teenage son Elliott. Claire is a writer and a soon to be divorcee, the reader gets to follow Claire through her Reinvention. Her Reinvention is a weekly column that she is writing for the New York Times (I know I had a fan girl moment too), her content is reinventing herself before her big fortieth birthday! Her column takes you through her divorce, weight loss journey, online dating fiascos, and reconnecting with her family. As someone who has struggled with body image this book really spoke to me. I was right there with Claire while she binge ate or worked out excessively. Claire is every girl/woman who has never felt like she was enough, that the extra pounds limited her in life, and wanted to change it but did not know how. Reading about Claire's journey seeing her struggle but get back up to fight even harder made me fall in love with this character from page one. The Author did an amazing job writing this book, I felt like I was Claire in some parts of the book due to it being relatable with what is going on right now in society as well as past experiences I have had. Another huge thing for me is that even though this highlighted many serious issues it was done in a way where I did not feel like I was reading a pamphlet. The humor was spot on and did not diminish the message being shared to the reader. Please bring Claire back, even if it is only for a novella story. I miss her already!

I was on a hot roll (pun intended) with this book. K.L. had me hooked from the very start. I was just getting to the meat and potatoes of it all and WHAM... I had to put it down.
Not for fault of K.L.. I had some ...Things Happening that led me to the emotional point that I physically Could Not Read her words.
SO...
I set a deadline, and stuck to it. I finished the book this week...

I Love the way this story is written, as it is not the typical read. I have stated before that it was like I was Sitting With My Best Friend. I loved Claire from the very start. She made me so glad I never had to do Online Dating.

It was awesome meeting you K.L. Montgomery, and I Really Enjoyed This Fat Girl <3

Six stars!!!

This book was phenomenal! Claire is easily one of us and there was an instant hook of being vested in the character and in her choices. She faced many issues that many women face with class, humor and bravery. Her tale is at once real and inspiring, a true motivation for us all.

As I divorced two years ago I related to her instantly, her story could have been my own. And I only wish I had found this sooner, from dealing with infidelity to being fat, she proved that we aren't alone in what we deal with and her transformation to a strong independent woman aware of her issues and the choices she needs to make to continue to deal with them is truly amazing.

This could in some ways be my story

I wish I could say I had the interesting dates Clair had. But this story reads like my childhood . I have never thought of the ways I tried to lose weight as being eating disorders , eating disorders for everything my anorexic best friend had in college . I was too fat to have an eating disorder . This book made me really take a look at my life , and love who I am as I am even as I try to change what my exterior looks like . A really good read .

This story belongs to a lot of girls. There is something here we can all relate to. Most girls never look in the mirror and see the same image others do. And as we watch Claire fight her way through a divorce from her cheating ex, being a single mom, trying to love herself, take on a new relationship, her fear of aging and coming to terms with the fact her father had an affair, we root her on. This book is worth reading, and no doubt you will find something that relates to yourself. Claire is most women. And it is her growing process that makes this book so rich. A definite winner!

Lots to like about this book but also some things to not like about it. The story wandered a little too frequently that I found my eyes glazing over. It could have used a heavier hand in editing. Plus, the formatting in the Kindle version was wonky towards the end so it was quite distracting.

Despite those shortcomings, a quick read with quite a few laugh out loud moments. In some ways, reminded me of Jen Lancaster's early works.

DNF - I love a book with lots of character interaction and dialogue. By chapter 10 I found I was skimming pages and that was the sign for me to stop. You could count on one hand how many actual conversations had taken place by that stage. The story was slow for me and the continued self-deprecation was expected but over the top. I thought it was a story about moving forward, unfortunately not by chapter 10. I'm sure she wins out in the end but there's a lot of monologue to wade through first.

Great story

This was my first book by Ms. Montgomery. I was very impressed. Weather your a "Fat Girl" or a skinny one, you can find a little of yourself in Clair and can relate to her. We all go through something in our lives that define us and it's good to read that it's " not just you".
