A must read for those those who love murder mysteries in which the murders are both grisly and the murderers fascinating. All Karen Slaughter's books are not for the faint of heart, but are for those who love a good, slowly developing love story. She's a keeper.
Loved story. Definitely a page turner. I adore Karin Slaughter and will read whatever she writes. Blindsighted received a 5-star from me, and this one almost did. It's a 4-star, maybe 4.5. The depravity that the author can write so well is realistic yet not stomach turning (unless you are faint of heart). I love the fervor in which Sara and Jeffrey went after this situation. I felt the plotting good, though slow in a couple places. The ending was good, satisfactory in wrapping up, but not great. I enjoyed this read and will continuing bingeing through the series. This author is heads and shoulders above so many of the supposed greats out there. Love her work.
This series has many connections that are fascinating. Read them in order and you will race through them all. An incredibly detailed and amazing set of stories with some very wounded and wonderful characters.
I like this series and the characters. Such a sad book that is heartbreaking especially since these horrible things happen everyday to innocent children.
Story: 4.5 stars As a huge fan of the author's Will Trent series, I'm very familiar with several of the characters who cross over into this Grant County series, particularly Sara and Lena. Even with that knowledge, my impressions of them changed greatly with this book.
For Sara, I always had these perfect images of her time with her husband Jeffrey. This book, which highlights their time divorced and still working thru their issues, gave me a different perspective, of the man who held her heart before Will Trent came into the picture. And all I can say is that I think Will was an upgrade.
For Lena, I never liked her, to put it bluntly. But holy hell, this book definitely has me sympatric for what she goes thru. Lena always has a hard edge and cold demeanor. That was no different in this book, as she barely waits 10 minutes before blaming Sara for something that was in no way her fault. But through the course of events, as the killer ups the ante, you may find yourself in the same boat as me, struggling with new unexpected feelings.
Backtracking a bit, this story is the first book in the Grant County series and takes place prior to Sara moving to Atlanta. Sara is the center of this story, not only finding the first victim, but then being forced to be part of the investigation and work with her ex to help solve it. From there, with each additional victim, Sara begins to feel this killer may have ties to her past. How deep those ties run, takes time to be revealed. As always, this author lays out the plot in such a way that the killer only becomes clear when she wants it to be. And this killer is just as devious as you can imagine with this author's wicked brain.
The title of the story relates to something the killer uses to incapacitate the victim and make them feel things that aren't meant to be felt. If you aren't familiar with this author's work, keep in mind that while there are no trigger warnings, expect some detailed descriptions of what the killer does to his victims. Cringe worthy indeed. But despite the gory details, I loved how the mystery was unveiled and how it tied to Sara's past. Very cleaver.
Performance: 5 stars There's a reason this narrator is her go-to for audio books . . . she nails it every time. She has perfected the voice of the victim, which makes these stories all the more bone chilling and believable. I've run out of accolades for her, just see all my other Karin Slaughter audio reviews and trust me that these audios are worth the cost.
Overall: 4.5 stars This book made me love Sara even more, and it showed how her past isn't perfect (as Will may suspect). And I gained a lot more respect for Lena. We'll see how my new feelings about these characters play out in the other books in this series.
Blindsighted, NOT Kisscut- that's the next book and soon to be on my list once I've read what I'm currently reading- was a wonderfully written book. The characters were detailed, different, with dark secrets, interesting and very believable thoughts, heart, emotions and a conscious. I liked the divided viewpoint between Jeremy, Sara and Lena. They were all different but had many similarities. They were all driven by the rape and murder of Sybll Adams- Lena's sister- and wanted to solve it for their own reasons, apart from the obvious.
The description of the rape, the torture and death were very detailed and disturbing. I found it hard to read without pulling a face and taking a much needed breather before picking the book up again. Some parts were enough to make you want to vomit. But in a good way, if that makes sense.
The scenery, characters, plot were bang on, the prose was eloquent, thorough, flowed beautifully and kept you interested; on your toes. You wanted to know what would happen next after each chapter and that's a hard thing to pull off, especially with a 400 page book.
My only negative comment was that I guessed who had done it from the moment he was introduced. The more I read about him the more I was convinced he was the killer, though I did have others I suspected as well. He became more and more the likely culprit as it developed, but it honestly, didn't bother me one bit. The only bit that did bother me was when
Apart from that. It was brilliant. Great ending, beginning and middle. I am SOOOO looking forward to reading the next one.
I’m a big fan of Slaughter’s Will Trent series and for the longest of times I told myself I needed to read what came before, that I needed to know what happened in Sara’s life prior to her appearance in the Will Trent books. It took me longer to work around to them than I had hoped, but I’m there now. More importantly, I can say they are not disappointing.
I read the Will Trent series in the wrong order. I brought a pack of books and a couple of them were in said pack. I was so interested that I didn’t bother to search whether or not they were part of a series. I simply jumped right in. Whilst the books worked as standalone novels, it was clear that there was an overarching story I was missing out on. I attempted to amend my lack of knowledge, but continued to read them in the wrong order as I started each one as it arrived in the post. I promised myself I would not do the same with her Grant County novels.
I suggest you do read them in order, though. Whilst it is impossible to enjoy them alone or in the wrong order, they’re best read as they were published. The story flows so beautifully, and you’ll end up with far too many spoilers.
As with all of Slaughter’s work, the first two in this series are great reads. I could sit here trying to sound poetic about her work, but anyone who has read any of Slaughter’s other work will know what to expect. Darkness. Twists and turns. The harshness of humanity. Mystery. A questionable cast of characters (and that goes for both the bad guys and our leading roles).
Honestly, if you enjoyed gritty crime Slaughter is the woman for you.
Whoa. This novel by Karin Slaughter had me cativated in a way I hadn't with her novels yet. Kisscut is not for the faint of heart, the subject matter is deep and dark, yet very real. Not only does Slaughter weave her plot through society's darkest crime with unyeilding detail, she goes deeper than ever before into the lives of the characters she has built in this series. Such a well developed novel that had me thinking well after I had finshed reading. Thought provoking, dramatic, and exposing. Slaughter has the guts to tell this story, do you have the guts to read it?
I only read Pretty Girls from Karin Slaughter before starting her Grant County series and absolutely hated it. Going in I was expecting a predictable plotline and way too much gore. But I wanted to read something trivial to relax a little.
Blindsighted the first book was better than what I expected. I like the setting of a small town with a serial killer. The gore and predictability stayed. It was very easy to find out who the killer was and the gore didn´t do much more than for the sake of being bloody and shocking.
Kisscut deals with an even more disgusting case than the first one. But this time the puzzle pieces fit better. The characters worked on their trauma from the first book. Lena is a great example of that, I don´t find her very sympathetic but she feels like a genuine person and is way better written than anybody in Pretty Girls. The case this time also was more intricate and didn´t just give away the culprit at the middle point.
Reading Grant Country feels like watching a PSG18 crime series. There often is more blood and gore than needed, the characters are a bit bland but overall it feels like something I can read to wind down. With this thought going in I was positively surprised by the ending of Kisscut which was more creative than I expected and bumped this collection up to three stars.

This is the first book I’ve read by Karin Slaughter and it won’t be my last. Blindsighted is the first book in The Grant County series. If you enjoy thrillers, crime, murder and gore with a lot of descriptive detail then you need to read this book. This one kept me guessing until the end!

Kisscut by Karin Slaughter is book number 2 in The Grant County series and all I can say is wow, what a story! First off I think it’s necessary to say this story has possible trigger warnings of child/sexual abuse. It was a somewhat shocking, dark and disturbing read but brilliant. It is not a story for the faint hearted. The ending threw me and wasn’t quite what I was expecting nor the outcome that I was hoping for which is kind of refreshing. I’m looking forward to continuing with the series once I can track down book 3.
Not my kind of book (too gritty, too dark)...but an engaging story, fine writing, and good character development. Set in a small town in Georgia, coroner Sara Linton discovers a bizarre murder that leads to a search for the killer along with her divorced husband, Jeffrey, the local police chief. The reviewer in the book's Foreword says Karin Slaughter writes with a "razor." Good description for a novel whose crime scenes are disturbingly graphic and whose description of an autopsy reads like a how-to-do-it textbook.
Lena Adam’s sister is brutally murdered (she is blind) and Sara And Jeffrey (ex husband) work to find the killer - he even ends up taking Lena - after I read this I forgot to review it so now I’m having a hard time remembering it all but I did like it - just like all of Karin Slaughters books - the pharmacist is guilty
Fabulous book, I started this after I had read a disappointing book review on a famous forensic coroner writer. Karin Slaughter has now become my next addiction, I didn’t get who the killer was until the book gave that information up. Great book, I will make sure I read Kisscut next, starting tomorrow.
Love her books! Very disturbing things happen in this book but I am sure it isn't far off the mark as to what sometime goes on in our disturbing world. Really keeps your attention from beginning to end.
Another thriller featuring a serial killer, police, a coroner. Felt it was predictable - I worked out who the bad guy was quite early on, but kept me reading to see how it panned out.
