OPEN YOUR EYES by Heather Fitt is an intense debut thriller featuring a Scottish reporter who begins to cover a series of sexual assaults and finds herself becoming a target from a dark on-line group. This is a debut standalone novel that had me on an emotional roller coaster from beginning to end.

Frankie Currington is a junior reporter for an Edinburgh paper who is finally getting some recognition for her stories. She is anticipating her big break when she is given the chance to write a crime beat story after attending the press conference for a series of sexual assaults. What she does not expect is the torrent of on-line abuse.

Liam has been publicly humiliated by a girl he cares for in his high school. He turns from his few male school mates and finds a welcome understanding in an on-line group of young men known as “incels”. The group goads as well as indoctrinates its members into believing all girls and women should be in a subordinate position in society and deserve anything that happens to them if they are not.

While Frankie refuses to back down from intimidation and physical abuse, she does not realize that she has placed herself as a figurehead that Liam is being indoctrinated to hate. They are on a collision course which could lead to terrible consequences.

This is an emotional thriller from start to finish. The plot is fast-paced and well researched with believable dialogue. This story contains sexual assaults, on-line indoctrination, bullying, misogyny, and discussions of feminism. Frankie was a character that was naïve, selfish, and made some decidedly stupid decisions during the story. It was hard to empathize with her even when she was in danger. Liam was a sympathetic character even as he was being groomed to be a weapon. This story contains many thought-provoking situations and character discussions. I am impressed that this is a debut book from this author.

I recommend this intriguing thriller, but it does contain trigger issues for some readers.

# I think it’s fair to say there will be triggers for people on various subjects inc rape and sexual assault and also the conclusion/ending of the book, which cant say as will give the plot away #

There has been some immense research done for this book and have to congratulate the author on that, the world of Incel’s and it’s sub divisions is vast and is far from just ‘a few men who are annoyed they cant find a woman’, it is a dark dark dangerous world and once in it, as is shown, it is very hard to give up,whatever the consequences to the person ( Incel and victim )
The book is therefore political in its nature but done in a fair and balanced way, whilst showing the evil Incels do also brings in how real feminism is geared towards helping and including men as well, this I think was important in the book and was explained well
It is also important to show how some young and hurting young men get involved in the movement and how dangerous internet ‘jokes’ can spiral into the victim of these things becoming involved in such groups
I haven’t given anything away re the story as you need to read the beginning, middle and end to see for yourself how this story evolves and how hate can breed
It’s not a light story, there are no LOL moments but it is sadly real and about something that is not discussed but actually happens and is happening
The characters are well played although I was disappointed how one of them was so easily replaced in the main ladies affections and thought he deserved a bit more understanding re his views and efforts ( Todd )
A difficult book to write and research I am guessing and certainly no punches pulled in telling this harrowing but well told story

Frankie is a reporter at the Edinburgh newspaper where she writes featured articles. She hopes to be a crime reporter one day and wants to prove herself. There has also been lot of attacks happening in the local area where prostitutes and been raped. But the local police only warn the local women do not go out at night.
She writes two articles about the history of Valentine’s Day and International Women’s Day that day that doesn’t go down to well and not only accused of being a feminist but also gets threatened as well. But that doesn’t stop her getting the word out with the help of an equality group. But her boyfriend Todd is annoyed and telling her that she is living dangerously, and she should stop but she is so naive that she carries on.
Oh Wow. If I didn’t know that Open your eyes by Heather Fitt was a debut novel I would have thought that this was written by an more experienced writer. Open your eyes is fantastic first read from the author considering this is a difficult subject to write about. It is well written, and I got hooked from the first page. The author has thoroughly researched the content of Rape and Incels and online grooming in a way that is sensitively done. As this is the first book from the author, I can’t wait to see what she has next instore for us in her next book. 5 stars from me.

Wow this is quite a debut. Open Your Eyes is a stand-alone suspense novel set in Edinburgh, which explores the scary world of the online incel (involuntary celibate) movement and their venomous hatred of the very notion of feminism, and the women they perceive as being to blame for it. This was a powerful, thought-provoking and sometimes uncomfortable read, covering some dark topics.

I received a complimentary copy through the Bloodhound Books Advance Reviewers group - which ironically the author used to run, so I’ve known her online for a few years and eagerly watched her progress from publicist to newbie published author.

Frankie Currington is a junior newspaper journalist who wants to cover crime stories, rather than the fluff pieces her editor requests. When her story about the history of International Women’s Day starts getting her public attention, she is sent to cover the investigation into a series of rapes across the city, triggering a wave of threats from misogynistic trolls. As Frankie is drawn in to the feminist cause, to the alarm of her boyfriend Todd, she attracts the attention of a disturbed young man desperate to prove himself to his monstrous fellow incels, with terrible consequences…

This was fluidly-written and well paced, with short chapters and believable dialogue, which made it easy to read, but the subject matter meant I couldn’t “enjoy” it. I wasn’t sure if I was meant to like or approve of Frankie and Todd as protagonists - their ages are not specified but from certain plot details I’m guessing they’re in their 30s, but they’re both very immature and selfish. I have a general dislike of journalists as main characters, because of the “anything goes in pursuit of a story, no matter who gets hurt” attitude they all seem to share, and Frankie’s naive stupidity was frustrating to read about - even though the book’s title suggests this was deliberate. Her treatment of Todd was despicable - no matter how annoying his behaviour was.

The most intriguing character was Liam - Fitt does a great job keeping us hovering between sympathy and horror as he devolves from pathetic virgin schoolboy to repugnant rapist-in-training through the encouragement of his sinister new “friends”. I have no doubt that such bottom-dwelling communities do exist, and in this internet age have great sympathy for the young women unfortunate enough to become their targets by, for example, simply turning down an invitation out. The mentality that awkward young men are entitled to sex with attractive women as a kind of human right would be laughable if the consequences were not so deadly. They’ve probably always been out there, but social media and the dark web have weaponised their irrational displaced hatred. The fact that I couldn’t decide whether I wanted Liam to die, be imprisoned (and learn firsthand what rape is like) or be redeemed is a testament to the author’s skill.

This would make a good book club pick because of the discussion potential, as long as readers are aware of content warnings (for rape in particular.) The whole debate about whether women bear any responsibility for what happens when they walk home alone drunk after dark is an interesting one - of course they shouldn’t be blamed, I used to do the same as a student - hey, taxis are expensive. I got away with it, (being 5 foot 10 with broad shoulders usually clad in a biker jacket probably helped,) but I still cringe at my youthful stupidity. Now that I’m boring and middle-aged I look at what girls wear out on the town and despair… (not to mention wondering how they don’t freeze to death!)

I loved the Edinburgh setting - since it was my home for ten years, but this is actually a story which could take place anywhere. I also particularly liked the ending, which doesn’t take the obvious route, and left the characters’ fates somewhat open. While this doesn’t feel like a series, I’d be interested to read a sequel now that Frankie has (spoiler alert) had her eyes opened… The Ruby character was also an interesting one - it’s unclear as to whether she’s as naive as Frankie, or cynically manipulative for her own ends, and I would’ve been keen to know what happened to her. Finally, a special mention for the stunning cover image - very different to anything I’ve seen lately and it stands out while remaining relevant to the title and plot.

Thanks to Bloodhound and Heather Fitt for the opportunity to read an advance copy. I am posting this honest review voluntarily.

Fitt delivers a superb story that has been carefully crafted to create a suspenseful thriller. I really enjoyed this fast-moving novel and thought that Fitt has found a perfect balance between ominous and action.

Personally, the only thing that let this book down was the fact that I guessed the ending and was preparing myself for more unexpected revelations. In my head I was certain that characters would be revealed to having hidden agendas and I was disappointed this never came to fruition. Furthermore, whilst the Epilogue was certainly fitting, I think I had foreseen this too early in the novel for it to be a surprise, lessening the impact.

Set in Edinburgh, the novel follows young reporter, Frankie, who steps up for her newspaper to report on the recent attacks in the city. When her name becomes recognisable, this opens Frankie up to online abuse, trolls calling her out for defending equality and leaving sinister, threatening messages. Rightfully or wrongly, this does not deter Frankie, and she is more determined than ever to demonstrate the need for equal rights, working with fellow campaigner, Ruby, in helping to spread this message.

However, even when Frankie is clearly in danger, she still persists and I admired her dogged determination. Although this pushes her boyfriend, Todd, away, Frankie remains keen to do her bit for the feminist cause. This provoked conflicting emotions as whilst I admired Frankie’s ethics and her strength to continue promoting her beliefs, I also kind of agreed with Todd as he desperately tries to influence Frankie to step down and stay safe.

Yet, Todd’s character never truly settled with me and I increasingly disliked him over the novel. Although I agreed with some of his arguments about keeping Frankie safe, I found the parallels between him and Frankie’s persecutors to be quite chilling. I was surprised that Frankie did not recognise this herself. Todd appears to go from controlling to lazy and I wanted there to be more of a balance in his character. Indeed, I felt as frustrated as Frankie in the earlier parts of the narrative and felt there was a lack of equality in their relationship – quite ironic considering this book is based on equal rights.

This is a cleverly written narrative and I like how Fitt moves between three characters. However, I think it would have been helpful if some time frames were included. The Prologue was effective in establishing the theme of the story, but I was never quite certain where this fit in the timeline of events. Furthermore, significant time passes but this is only shortly referenced within chapters; I had expected the events to be following one another in a short period of time. If some indicators had been given at the start of the chapters, I think this would have added to the intensity of the action, especially as I was confused where on the timeline the Epilogue takes place.

Despite these misgivings, I thought this was a great book for Fitt as a debut author and I am really excited to see what this writer produces next. The conclusion of the story could be open-ended but I cannot see how the plot would continue without it being repetitive. Although the subject matter is incredibly dark (and for which I was surprised about!), I thought the plot was highly involved and gripping, making it rather difficult to put down.

With thanks to Overview Media for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I love Heather Fitt as a person, so I couldn't have been more excited to read her debut novel Open Your Eyes. This was a super DARK plot and wasn't anything like I was expecting it to be. There is a lot about feminism and what it means to be a woman in this day and age, which I think is important to note since I don't think this will be everyone's cup of tea. I could not believe how readable and bingeable this book was, and I flew through the beginning while trying to savor the end. I was hooked right away, and at first, I also loved Frankie but by the end of the story, I was honestly ready to smack her. I have no idea if she was supposed to be a likable character but she sure wasn't for me after a succession of very bad and dumb choices.

There is a bit of humor in the book which I gotta tell you, was much needed with the dark storyline. The tension was high and that was definitely one of the things that kept me reading. And can we just talk about how great the cover is? I ended up buying a physical copy because I love it so much, and I am excited to add it to my shelf. I really don't want to give away any spoilers, and I recommend going into Open Your Eyes as blind as possible but knowing there are going to be triggers. I think that if you can read Karin Slaughter you shouldn't have an issue with it. So, who should read this book? Fans of crime fiction for sure, and those who don't mind getting uncomfortable while they are reading. Fitt really dug deep into the world of the incel in this book, and you gotta be ready for it. I really appreciated that she put a key in the front of the book as there was some terminology that I wasn’t familiar with (like incel). A well-done debut and I am already looking forward to her next whatever that may be!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

OPEN YOUR EYES is an addictive twisting debut novel by Bloodhound’s own Heather Fitt.

This was an emotional fast-paced read, well researched, dealing with sensitive issues of both mental and physical violence towards women. It deals with a number of deaths that have been attributed to incels in the UK in recent years.

An incel is a person (usually a man) who regards himself or herself as being involuntarily celibate and typically expresses extreme resentment and hostility toward those who are sexually active.

Many of them placing the blame on women. This online subculture of men who express rage at women for denying them sex and who frequently fantasize about violence and celebrate mass shooters in their online discussion groups.

The book opens with a woman being raped so be aware that this may not be everyone’s choice of book.

This story is centered around Frankie, a reporter for the Edinburgh Chronicle who is looking to writing more serious articles, than the articles she’s been given in the past.

Frankie has now finally been assigned a high-profile crime story about a series of sexual assaults, and relishes her big break. Her article focuses on the issue of women’s safety, which doesn’t seem to have improved much since the era of the Yorkshire Ripper.

Immediately, Frankie begins to face a rush of abuse online, and discovers the phenomenon of incels—the men who are trying to stop her from covering the story. But she refuses to back down. But in the background of the online world, one man is being primed for an attack on Frankie.

Frankie starts by attending a press conference after five women have been raped. The police warn women not to go out alone at night…to keep themselves safe. This leads Frankie to meet a group who are fighting for women’s rights but this would lead to more danger.

She was now a victim…she is being targeted by a group of men online who have been brought together by their hatred of women and are responsible for the recent rapes.

A great debut novel that definitely had me hooked and left me with a lot to think about.

Many thanks to Heather and Bloodhound Books for my digital copy.

I read this book in one sitting last night, and to be honest, Ive been thinking all day, how would a review of mine even give this book the 5* review it deserves.
I got completely sucked into this from the off and if anything, only got more gripped.

I'll admit I was perhaps a tad cynical when I learnt that Frankie was a journalist wanting to write hard journalism, but this takes this to a whole new level. Her perception of life and outlook seems to change quite dramatically and drastically as she fights for feminism in a passionate way.

There is a sinister group always lurking, and I felt on edge constantly worried and thinking when they may attack next. I went from wanting to scream at Frankie for her naivety, whilst in the next breath saluting her bravery and passion.

This couldn't be more timely as news surrounds us with female violence, and murder and the title of the book really does give a clear message to 'Open Your Eyes.'

P.S The ending far from disappoints.

Oh my goodness I cannot believe what I have just read, that this is the author's debut book and what a fast paced thriller it was. It kept me on the edge of my seat from the very first page until the brilliant ending.

It was well written, all the characters were interesting and I particularly enjoyed how the story was told between Frankie and Liam and I also enjoyed the friendship between Todd and Craig. Not the ending I wanted it to be which they never are really but a thoroughly brilliant read which I can definitely recommend, you will not be disappointed and well done Heather.

Does anyone else know what there rating of a book is going to be before they finish. I always do and it never changes, or should I say it didn’t until I read open your eyes. Throughout this book I thought it would be 4 stars but finishing the book. It is a solid 5 star.

‘Open your eyes’ is filled to the brim with tension, it deals with influence, feminism, sexual assault and violence.

It had me hooked from the nerve-wracking prologue and kept me gripped. I loved the writing style of the author – starting off as a slow burn introducing us to the characters and then BAM!!

The story follows Frankie a journalist who wants to write about real things and be a ‘serious journalist’ (this part made me chuckle and think about Bridget Jones) after dipping her toe into making her name for herself she finds herself emerged in hate that she won’t backdown from. Alongside this 18 year old Liam has had a hard time with his friends, humiliated and angry he forgets them and makes friends with some online incels and when the lives of these two people collide it’s not pretty.

Within these pages, I found that influence was a big theme and I found it quite scary just how easy someone can be influenced. Liam was a nice young lad who got sucked in, possibly even radicalised by a group of men when he was feeling at his lowest. By the end regardless of what had happened I still felt sorry for him.

Frankie on the other hand was an incredibly strong character, and although I’m not sure I agree with the actions she had taken I still found her to be an incredible character.

This was a stunning debut, the characters were authentic, life-like and likeable. The story was incredible and kept me hooked throughout and I can see an amazing career ahead for this author.

This book explores dark themes of sexual abuse, toxic masculinity and Incel culture.  Be aware of trigger warnings as from the outset it doesn't hold back.

We follow Frankie who in her strive to be recognised as a crime journalist, suddenly gets caught up in exploring women's rights when multiple women are victims of serious assaults. Frankie soon attracts the attention of a group of incels who think women like Frankie should be put in her place.

We also follow Liam who suffers horrible bullying at school and this takes him down a very dark path.

I really felt for Liam and his tragic path in life because of what he had endured at school. It is a cautionary tale when we don't know what young people are dealing with and young people have so much pressure to be sexually active and mature when they are not emotionally ready for it. This does not condone or excuse Liam's actions but it made his misplaced anger easier to understandable in a world that is difficult to comprehend.

The author clearly did a lot of research on Incels and the derogatory language and codes used. It is sad and horrifying that this is reality, and not some dystopian nightmare.

The story raises good points about how victims and women are treated in that they should be cautious and are responsible if harm befalls them. Yet, where is the moral outrage against abusers?

It is well written and thought-provoking and sadly relevant for the world we live in. Thankfully, not all men have nefarious intentions, but it is important to call out this incredibly harmful and toxic belief system for what it is... abuse.

Huge thanks to the author, Bloodhound Books and Love Books Tours for providing a copy of the book to review.

This is a great debut novel from Heather Fitt.
The book opens with a woman being raped so be aware that this may not be everyone’s choice of book.
The story is centred around Frankie who is a reporter in Edinburgh and wants to progress to serious reporting rather than the articles she’s been given in the past.
Frankie starts by attending a press conference after several women have been raped and is shocked when the Police warn women not to go out alone at night.
This leads Frankie to meet a group who are fighting for women’s rights but also leads her into danger.
There’s a group of men online who have been brought together by their hatred of women and are responsible for the recent rapes.
This is a shocking story as the men’s behaviour soon spirals out of control and more than one life is lost.
A great debut novel that definitely had me hooked.

Oh wow! A debut novel that instantly comes across as a seasoned author. Sit down and hold on tight! Frankie is a reporter on an Edinburgh newspaper and has been doing feature articles but wants to cut her teeth on something rather more gitty- crime if at all possible. There have been several rapes in the area however the victims all describe what appears to be different men and its only been made known once prostitutes were not the only targets. Have things really moved on since the Yorkshire ripper days? When she gets the break she has dreamt of things don’t quite go to plan and online comments, as we all know, have come to bite her in a way she was not expecting. She innocently writes a piece on the history of valentine's day and then one on international women's day which attracts the wrong sort of attention. She is then the subject of revenge attacks and a whole lot more
OMG! I genuinely couldn't put this down- its so well written and gripping I wanted to race through the whole thing (real life got in the way unfortunately ). I took to Frankie and this opened my eyes to what sadly is out there on something I knew nothing about. Yes this is fiction but things like this do exist (look up incel - wiki is a good source) and many murders have been commited through this. A well researched, stunningly written novel . Please go start the next one Heather-and may I be first in the queue? A huge 5* from me and more if I could.

Frankie has been trying to break into crime reporting for some time, and she finally gets her chance when she’s sent to cover a police conference about a spate of violent attacks on women. She’s never seen herself as a feminist, but the experience begins to shift her perspective. When a fellow journalist challenges the police chief why he’s – “asking the victims to stop themselves being attacked. But you haven’t asked the men to stop going out at night, to help women feel safer” – a seed is planted in Frankie.

Later, over a chippy tea with her parents, Frankie learns that her mother was sacked for being pregnant and never returned to her career – something Frankie had always assumed was her mum’s choice. As her mum talks about the Yorkshire Ripper case, it becomes clear how little has changed: women were told to stay in then, just as they are now.

Running parallel is the story of Liam, a teenager who is humiliated when compromising photos of him are shared around school. Isolated and angry, he finds comfort in an incel forum that offers him dangerous validation.

As Frankie and Liam’s stories unfold, the stakes get higher and the consequences are chilling.

This is a dark, powerful novel that tackles urgent themes head-on. While the messaging is vital and thought-provoking, the tone remains heavy, with little reprieve. The lack of a lighter subplot and the bleak ending may be tough for some readers – but this is an important, uncompromising read that asks the hard questions.

Thank you to Love Books Tours and Bloodhound Books for the free ebook in order to take part in the tour.

Overview: Oh my goodness...I wish I'd read this book sooner. I loved it! It covers some very important and hard-hitting issues. As someone who has suffered through my share of sexual harassment and been followed home on one occasion, I could easily relate to Frankie and her determination to stand up for herself. I have to say though that none of the men in this book were particularly likeable. I assume that was probably the idea though.

Good Points: Not only does this book highlight a very important topic, it isn't afraid to shy away from it either. The story was fairly simple, but it's the topic that's important. The pacing was fast and I struggled to put it down. I thought it highlighted the online abuse very well.

Not so Good Points: I mean...the men in this story were all horrible. But other than that I loved the book so so much!

Want a gripping thriller that will have you hooked from the start? Read this!

Narrated by Hilary MacLean ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Story by Heather J Fitt ⭐⭐⭐⭐

In "Open Your Eyes" by Heather J Fitt, a novel with a premise reminiscent of Sharon Bolton's "The Dark," the divergence lies in its heightened intensity and deeper exploration of the disturbing psyche of unhealthy males. The narrative delves into alarming levels of violence, offering a stark and unsettling portrayal.

This tale taps into a realm of real-world terror, sadly echoing the experiences of many women who have encountered similar situations. The chilling realism adds an unsettling layer to the story, making it all the more impactful.

This was really hard to believe that this was a debut novel, it felt very well written and researched. However there were issues with the story so it is not perfect I wasn't exactly sure on Frankies rationale at times.

There were loads of trigger issues here so not an easy read but I am glad that I did.

Frankie, a newspaper journalist, is desperate to move away from “nice” stories and get into crime reporting. She is given her big chance when news comes in of a third woman in as many months being raped at night in Edinburgh’s parks. Actually there are now five victims but it seems that the outrageous thinking that it comes with the job for prostitutes is still prevalent in some quarters, and the case of a serial rapist is only now being taken seriously since the last two victims were not on the game. It brings back shades of 40 years ago when the Yorkshire Ripper stalked the north of England and women were told to stay off the streets. Frankie wonders if things have really changed at all as she sets about writing her article. If she thought the trolling comments she got last year were bad, they’re nothing to the threats she starts to receive when her piece is published. Hatred and vitriol are rife – is it time for women to Reclaim The Streets again?
In the previous year eighteen-year-old Liam was humiliated by his so-called schoolfriends and in particular a girl called Kirsty Boyd, culminating in the publishing of nude photos of him online. Isolating himself, he has joined an internet group called Black Knights and Black Pills where he has identified himself as an Incel (Involuntary Celibate) like the others in this dark room who are plotting how to get their revenge on womankind. It's Liam’s turn now, but will it go to plan? Will it really be as satisfying as he hopes? And will Liam cross the line?
As Frankie delves deeper into the underbelly and outdated attitudes of society, her boyfriend Todd unwillingly agrees to help by posing as a woman hater in the forums to gain research material for her but it doesn’t take long for events to escalate and for the paths of Frankie and Liam to cross.
Wow – just wow! This book literally will make some readers open their eyes! Not only is it superbly written and completely engrossing (I devoured it in a few short hours), it also raises some really important and difficult issues. Should women take precautions to keep themselves safe? – yes, although they shouldn’t need to. Should women avoid going out? – definitely not! It reveals online bullying, trolling and grooming in all its repulsive truth, and even demonstrates the feeling of support and comradeship that is gained from being with like-minded people, however twisted their beliefs. It is hard to believe this is her debut novel and I am eagerly looking forward to more stories from this hugely talented author. 5*

" [...] We’re trying to dispel the notion that feminism equals men v women. [...]"

Wow! "Open your eyes" by Heather J. Fitt is a very powerful psychological thriller that will shock more than one reader. You will meet feminists and incels here.
An incel, as you know or not, is a member of an internet secret subculture who, despite their desire, is unable to find a sexual partner. They often blame women for this and unfortunately want to cause them pain. Of course, they do all this because they hate women and want to show them who is really in charge. To me, these are sick people who can't cope in life. Such individuals become internet trolls who poison women's lives. In particular, they hate feminists who speak loudly about their views on forums. In the book "Open your eyes" you will meet a group of incels who unfortunately prey on women. They insult them on the internet, hate them with text messages and commit physical incidents.
I met here, among others:
- Frankie. She is a reporter at The Edinburgh Chronicle. At first, I liked her. One article she writes will turn her life upside down. It will literally open Pandora's box. How will she benefit from it? In my opinion, she should stop and not go further.
- Liam - a typical kid who only thinks about revenge for the wrongs done. Because of one girl he hates all women. It is thanks to him that we enter a dark world.
- Todd - he is Frankie's boyfriend. You could say that he slightly corners his girlfriend and hides what is on his mind. His girlfriend's journalistic work significantly affects their relationship.
The plot is so captivating that I could not tear myself away from reading. Evil spreads its tentacles here. The action is fast-paced, and the characters are very well portrayed. There is no shortage of madmen in the world, so the story described in this book could have really happened.
Everyone deserves love, but not everyone is worth it.
The ending of "Open your eyes" shook me. I would gladly read the rest of this story.

For a debut novel this one is very good. Based in Edinburgh an up and coming reporter,  Frankie Currington, is given her big break by reporting on a series of sexual assaults on woman. The more she investigates the more she becomes the prime target of an increasing group of disillusioned men who are very much against women's rights, "Incels".

The story shows how a young and easily influenced man, Liam, is pulled into the murky underworld of the incels and groomed into horrific crimes against women and in particular Frankie. Frankie continues her campaign against the hate crimes against the wishes of her boyfriend,  Todd, who can see the danger she is putting herself in.

I have to applaud this author for the incredible amount of research which has gone into the writing of this book and is very apparent throughout.  The story has real substance to it and reads very well from start to finish with each chapter building the suspense leading to a dramatic finale.

Had I not known that this was a debut novel I would have thought it had been from a very accomplished author. I cannot wait to read her next offering.

Thank you to Bloodhound Books for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Five stars all the way!

After taking time to think about and digest, these are my final thoughts:

This is Real-Life Fiction!

What a harrowing and extremely hard-hitting read. Written and executed brilliantly, this gives a true reflection of Incel culture and the realistic consequences of said culture.

I went though every single emotion possible with the most prominent being sadness.
Sad because of what the characters went through (including Liam).
Sad because this is a true reflection of the world we live in.
And sad because of the horrifying acts that were carried out.

What stood out for me was having it as a dual POV with one of those views being Liam.
It was fascinating reading how an innocent kid (was 17 at the start) became so broken and disillusioned that his whole view of women, (in part thanks to online grooming), became terrifyingly distorted. It truly hurt watching him slowly become a monster.
What I will say is that, although my heart went out to him after the humiliation he experienced, this in no way excuses his actions. I am so blessed to have a beautiful and caring son that, although went through their own pain and bullying, never got lost in such a vile world.
Again, this is a work of fiction but rooted in truth making it even more alarming.

I did see how one aspect was developing and figured out the end result but it didn't detract from the story, in fact, it actually highlighted how seemingly innocent conversations/decision can set people on a downward spiral.

I am excited to read more and seeing as The Flight will be having a new cover (and it sounds amazing), this will be my next read by Heather.

The first novel from this author and what an outstanding book it is.
Frankie Currington at the office, a journalist at the Edinburgh chronicle she wants more than just doing stupid valentine reports and Sid her boss thinks she's looking to far ahead for even reporting crime she has other idea's.
Her boyfriend Todd has other idea's too as he is left to prepare the big valentines day surprise for her, he does try his best bless him.
WOW this book has dark twisted chapters that focus in the online world that is so gripping to read.
Graphic on going details with twists that will make you quiver.
I loved the story with such harrowing insights, that I could not put down right till that booming ending.
Bring on more please from this author she is certainly going to go far in her superb writing, hope it's not too long for the next book. I do love new authors a big challenge for me.
5***** much deserved. Pick up a copy and read for yourself.

This chilled me to my soul. It was such a twisted and plot twisty read! The book really shows how far can go if pushed just enough.

The book was well written and flowed nicely. The setting of Edinburgh provided the city backdrop that even had me questioning the safety of a person in a bigger city.

The characters were really interesting. Frankie was independent, fierce and stubborn! Liam was well I don't think I have any words! I felt sorry for what the kids are school did to him. But my sympathy evaporated. The rest of the characters were good and worked well within the story.

The story was written in third person predominantly from Frankie and Liam's POVs. There were some parts that were from the POV of other characters. This worked well.

If you're looking for a chilling read, then I recommend this

Wow what a great debut from Heather Fitt !! Am looking forward to reading more from this author in the future.

Frankie is a Scottish based reporter, who longs to be taken seriously and write more hard hitting articles. When her boss asks her to cover a press conference, covering recent attacks on local women, she knows this could be the break she’s looking for. But little does Frankie realise that the article she writes leads to her being the focus of hatred for a group of men online. Can she really be the journalist she wants to be and keep herself out of danger ?

This is a great debut with a very hard hitting topic at its centre. I really enjoyed this book and although a very emotive, gruelling storyline I found myself hooked right from the start. I whizzed through this book as I just couldn’t wait to see what happened and I loved Frankie !! A must read for anyone that loves a good thriller !!

Thank you to Bloodhound Books for a digital copy of this book.

Well written debut from Heather.
Topical subject (sadly!) and i would suggest reading trigger warnings.
I think Heather has researched her subject matter well and this shows in a well put together, pacy story line. I won't go into full detail for I don't want to spoil the story- the blurb tells you all you need to know.
Read in only a few days as needed to get to the ending - quite hard to put down!

What an awesome piece of work this was!

I am amazed at this writer's ability to sketch out such a masterpiece with an honest effort to present an unbiased view of a world not known to most.

The story, although mind bogglingly scary, is original, realistic and totally plausible.

I found it's utterly distressing to realise such extremes do exist in today's world and that so many innocent women are being victimised by these antisocial (or anti-humane) elements on a regular basis. So many unsuspecting lives are being "ruined" senselessly in the process, because of a sad, miserable, misguided and deluded mental composure of a few ignorant men.

My rating:
Story : 5/5
Character sketches : 3.5/5
Language : 4.5/5
Twists : 3/5
Overall reading experience : 4.5/5

I fully recommend this one!

A brilliant debut novel from Heather Fitt and the first of many more I hope. Brilliantly written with lots of tension and drama. There is quite a bit of violence towards women but it is written in such a way that it draws you in to the story.
Frankie is a reporter in Edinburgh and Heather’s knowledge of Edinburgh really shines through. Frankie wants to write serious stories and becomes involved in a women’s rights group when women start being attacked. She puts herself unwittingly in danger as a group of men want to avenge their rejection by women and girls in the past.
A great story that keeps you hooked.

Wow! Amazing debut. It is a fast paced thriller whose characters make you feel quite the range of emotions from loving them to absolute disgust of who they are. There had to be a ton of research done into the world of Incel's and it shows because if you had never heard of the topic before it is explained as you read the story. I voluntarily reviewed an advance readers copy of this book.
