From the moment I opened Oni : A Little Girl’s Journey, I was captivated by the lush illustrations of the Yangambi Forest and the promise of a rich, cultural adventure. The unique use of Lingala vocabulary immediately transported me into a world that felt magical and deeply rooted in the traditions of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The story follows young Oni, who embarks on a journey to find her father, Tata, in the vast Yangambi Forest. Along the way, she encounters spirit animals who secretly guide and protect her. This vibrant journey unfolds with moments of danger, spirituality, and beauty as Oni walks, swims, and flies through the forest. Her determination is truly inspiring.

Elle Perrault’s writing blends poetic narrative with immersive details, making you feel as though you’re walking alongside Oni. The mix of Lingala words adds a layer of authenticity, and the theme of family, love, and spiritual guidance is beautifully conveyed throughout the journey. The bond between Oni and the spirit animals highlights the interconnectedness of nature and humanity.

This story is not just a journey of a little girl—it’s a cultural experience wrapped in a spiritual adventure. Oni Journey is both heartwarming and enlightening. It beautifully showcases the importance of family, culture, and the unseen forces that guide us. A must-read for anyone looking for a meaningful story with vibrant illustrations and a powerful message!
