These books are so adorable. The fact that the main character is a kitten who was abandoned in a cardboard box and gets taken in by an ex-yakuza member cracks me up. The human characters all scare the kitten because they look scary and he has no clue whether to trust the humans or not. Sabu, the kitten, is sketched out by everything included treats, food and toys until he realizes that they are fun things and not threats.

Sabu reminds me so much of my cat at home when I first brought her home after I rescued her. That is why I've enjoyed this series so far.

"This! This is the terror we know and love!"

Oh my goodness, I LOVE Jin!! That dream Sabu had of him was everything and just like I wouldn't mind seeing him ACTUALLY smile like that! LOL! Sabu does have a point though that when he has his usual yakuza smile, it is "the terror" we know and love! LOL!

Another really fun volume though! I laughed almost as much as I did when reading the first volume despite that I felt this had a little bit more of a gradual shift where the story isn't JUST focused on Sabu? I felt Jin had more page time and definitely enjoyed it because Jin is such a fun and enjoyable character! Seeing him happy over these animals being loved on by customers is so heartwarming and makes me really happy. <3

It was nice seeing Sabu mature a little bit from the previous volume and how he isn't QUITE as scared as he was before. He's really coming into his new "job" well and it's fun seeing him being his playful self that has this crazy imagination and still has a bunch of misunderstandings. LOL!

Definitely looking forward to the next volume! This continues to be a series I really enjoy and love!

I love the aspect of a rescued kitten getting slowly adjusted to a secure and loving environment. The vibes of this series is so pure and wholesome. Though, I believe judging-from-appearance is a bit too much and starting to get repetitive. I can kinda get it from cats and dogs, but I don’t think it’s that realistic to make every single human also unsettled by Jin’s or his folks’ looks. it could be slightly harmful.

Gosh this is so delightful! Just cute slice of life comic following a kitten adapting to life at a pet rescue cafe run by a former yakuza member. Just brings me so much joy!

The fact that a yakuza leader is a member of a neighborhood rescue animal lovers tight knit friend group is hilarious to me. Especially with the idea in mind that he regularly spends time with them, be it volunteering or just enjoying each other’s company.

“Thank you for reading Ex-Yakuza and Stray Kitten, Volume 2!
I suppose it's time I upgrade my working environment from propping my tablet against two bottles of water to something a bit better.
I hope this manga helps cure whatever ails you. Here's to Volume 3!” (the author’s thank you page in the back of the book)
This manga truly did help alleviate what ails me. I’m so stressed right now with school and other troubles, but this manga effectively worked as a stress reliever. Forget stress balls— read Ex-Yakuza & Stray Kitten!
This manga helps bring me a sense of joy and excitement that’s both mildly distracting as well as sort of comforting. It reminds me to be whimsical and feel the good things too. It isn’t heavy at all but it carries a fluid story. Man, I just really am grateful to this manga for helping get me through this college semester!

Re-read to complete my reviews of the series while I decide whether to keep it (part of the ongoing battle to Spark Joy with the bookshelf space I have) or help it find new fans in a free library.

I think part of my problem is a very large number of stories/movies/games/etc. can be AMAZING the first time, but then the wonder wears off in the old fashion of familiarity breeding contempt (or, at least, boredom). It's part of why I try to change up the variety in what I read, including reading books I just randomly find that I would never think to specifically seek out.

That said, this has the interesting effect of seeming more nonfiction than intended, after my having just read Do Cats Think?, which speculates that maybe cats DO communicate with each other in a way humans can't immediately perceive. I don't doubt that cats in real life talk somewhat like how they do in this book. We just can't decipher it as easily as they can.

Anyway, cute story! The one big downside—other than Sabu is honestly TOO EASILY SCARED OF EVERYTHING (not that I would blame him after his abandonment)—is it's a little bit of a learning curve for complete newcomers. *Why* is Sabu in specific so scared of a very few slightly scary people? (How, as a KITTEN, does he even know what a "gangster" is to be scared of them?) The overall story is broken up into somewhat more episodic chapters that don't really affect each other besides a general sense of progression as Sabu becomes adjusted to the pet café. Great for fans of cats and/or less serious stories that are lighter on "plot"!

Sabu is getting used to being an employee at the pet rescue café, but just when he thinks he can relax Jin throws something new at him. And even though Jin has only been nice, Sabu can't help but think Jin's finally going to show his true colors and every new thing is going to be horrible.

Forget glass half-empty type, Sabu is the type that thinks the glass is already empty and the half glass is just an illusion there to trick you. He has a very active imagination and always thinks the worst of Jin's actions, much to the amusement of readers. I've definitely known some cats who are as jumpy as Sabu and seem to think you are out to kill them, even when it is a harmless new toy...maybe that's what inspired the author. I wish there was a bit less swearing in this series. I think they added it in to make the series seem tougher to fit the ex-gangster persona. If it weren't for the swearing this would be a great middle grade read as it is so cute and funny, but the swearing bumps it up to YA/Adult.

Notes on content: About 10 minor swears and 3 moderate swears. No sexual content. Despite all of Sabu's fears, there's no violence.

Lectura entretinguda i tendra ♥

This is just cuteness overload.

I really like how you can see and feel how scared Sabu is and still gets when Jin has a certain look on his face or when he says something that can be interpreted as something completely different.

Not sure what else to say about it!
I've got a weak heart when it comes to a "bad boy" loving animals and taking care of them!

Would recommend if you love warm fuzzy stories, yakuza turned "good" (but gives off al the "questionable" vibes to surrounding people), and of course, cats! A lot them! and dogs! can't forget about the dogs!

Totally adorable! I love that Sabu is beginning to warm up to Jin, and learn that there's actually a gooey layer of softness underneath his hard, threatening exterior. I love Cafe Fluffy and all the rescued animals, and especially love that we get to see them talk to each other (obviously, humans can't understand them, but still funny!) I kind of wish we could learn more about Jin, he's definitely an interesting character (and nice to look at too, hehe).

This manga reminds me of Cat Massage Therapy, a ailment for a bad day and a purr-fect silly series to binge read after a hard time! 🐾

In this second volume, we see Sabu's adventuring into the café and exploring his new world more, while being introduce to new people and animals. I was hoping for more insight on why Sabu thinks the way he does, a backstory of sorts, but it hasn't happened yet. These interactions and this point-of-view is cute, but I am not sure how much further I will go into the story unless something occurs to add more depth or interest to the story.

Sabu is now joining Cafe Fluffy and his owner owns the new place where people can enjoy their beverages while petting cute rescued animals to lessen their stress or something. However, Sabu still doesn't trust his owner yet eats the food that Jin gave him and stuff. Plus Sabu gets to meet his workmates even the big cat who looks similar to Jin. That's all.

even better than the first volume!! I'm definitely seeing similarities to 'way of the house husband', but I love how even some of the 'scarier' (at first glance) animals here exhibit the same characteristics as Jin. Sabu is slowly relaxing and beginning to trust/understand those around him. this series is the perfect blend of fluffy, silly, and wholesome!!

Too cute for words!

If you are a fan of "way of the house husband" and/or "chi's sweet home" then you'll get a kick out of this series! Very slice of life formula without much in regards to plot. Neat little factoids along the way though.

More of a 3.5 star rating;
I really enjoyed seeing more of the other animals at the café, along with seeing Sabu navigating different customers at the café. I’m pretty curious going into the next volume due to a new character.

Adorable! Sabu is still scared of Jin, but is getting better. His relationship to the other cats and dogs is so cute! I love when he curls up with Boss cat. Sabu also has a vivid imagination, which is very funny.

I just finished volume 2 of this series and I still really enjoy it. It’s got a good cozy book feel and it’s an easy read for days that I can’t seem to pickup a heavy read and still want to get some reading in.

Just pure joy in manga form. Sabu finally accepts that Jin isn't a bad guy but he's still scared of him. We get to really see the animals interact at the Cafe and it's the cutest thing ever.
