FATEFUL DECISIONS, FATAL CHOICES

Jean Valjean has escaped his fate and, as mayor and factory owner, brought prosperity to the small town where he has settled. But when word comes that an innocent man may pay for his crimes, Valjean has to decide whether to save one life, the existence of his people, or his own soul. Valjean is already too late to rescue Fantine from her fate, but a Christmas Eve encounter with her daughter Cosette may just offer Valjean one last chance to do the right thing. Victor Hugo’s immortal hymn to the human spirit continues!

This continues to be the best/most faithful adaptation of Victor Hugo's novel Les Miserables that I've ever seen.

Part of my 2024 PopSugar Reading Challenge: Prompt 26: A book that was turned into a musical

Okay, so I might be stretching it with this one but there was no way I was going to make it through the novel right now so I went with the manga adaptation. I can't comment on its adaptation and how truthful it is the original (but the reviews I have seen say it is). It seems very thorough and it makes a door stopper of a novel feel much more approachable. The art is lovely, the characters are expressive, and the story is just as heart wrenching as the musical was.

Jean Valjean is such a dynamic character and watching his journey play out in manga is spectacular. Volume 2 of 4 of the omnibus brings us up to Marius catching a glimpse of Cossette and our first peek at grown up Eponine.

The tragedy of Fantine broke my damn heart though. What a choice Valjean had to make and neither was the "perfect" option.

Volume 2 starts by resolving the cliffhanger from the previous volume, Javert and Valjean arguing over Fantine's fate, and stops as Marius gets a glimpse of Cosette for the first time. This remains a remarkably faithful and thorough adaptation. In fact, the extremely minor cut of a frankly convoluted scene (sneaking Valjean out of the convent to sneak him back in) took me by surprise, though not in a bad way. That scene isn't necessary, and removing it didn't affect the narrative at all, as far as I can tell.

Most importantly, to me, this volume introduced Les Amis. I'm a little sad that we didn't get a version of A Group Which Barely Missed Being Historic, ie a thorough introduction to each Amis in turn, but that's only because I'm shameless when it comes to the students. Instead, Arai wrote a scene that effectively introduces each of my beloved students in turn, showing just enough of their personalities so that, combined with their distinct character designs, few readers will have trouble distinguishing them.
