A modern retelling of The Twelve Dancing Princesses

When the girls in Riverside Children’s Home start falling asleep in school, their classmate Bobby decides to investigate the cause.

He doesn’t know how to help them, but then one day he does a good deed and is repaid by a totally cool gift of an invisible cloak.

Hidden under his new cloak, Bobby sneaks into the girl’s dormitory to find out where they are going during the night. He is surprised to find them all disappearing into the wardrobe. With no other way to get to the bottom of things, Bobby follows Lotti and the other girls… and ends up in a magical world.

Can Bobby help the girls before Mr Rumble, the home’s care worker, separates them all and sends them to new homes?

A sweet fairy tale about family and friendship.

WISHING SHELF FULL REVIEW

It all started with socks. What a wonderful first sentence for a children's book! This is a delightful read based on The Twelve Dancing Princesses by The Brothers Grimm. Accessibly written for 8 to 11 year olds, it's the story of a young lad called Bobby who attempts to discover why the girls are falling asleep in school. What follows is a delightful, fantasy tale which is well written, funny (particularly in the beginning), and a perfect bedtime story.

There are two things about this book that I particularly enjoyed. Firstly, I felt the author worked really well with dialogue. The speech between the girls sounded so natural - and it's often rather funny too! In many ways, it's the way the girls talk - and what they say - which best helps the reader to understand them. Secondly, the story is so sweet; so safe, it's perfect for parents and grandparents looking for a fun, exciting story for children to enjoy, and not have to worry they'll get frightened or upset. There's a sort of warm, fuzzy feeling to the book, like putting on soft slippers.

All in all, this is a sweetly told story for 8 to 11 year olds. Children will enjoy getting to know the young characters and trying to work out what the girls are getting up to! I was also happy to see the original story has been included at the end, adding a little historical context to the proceedings!

Bobby, a tenant of a group home for children, has noticed some odd noises in the night. That, coupled with the fact that the girls all seem to be falling asleep in class, tells him that something is awry. Soon after begins an epic course into another world based on the fairy tale of Twelve Dancing Princesses!
This is a wonderful retelling of a fairy tale that children today will be able to relate to. It’s uplifting, adventurous, and charming! I highly recommend it, and it all started with socks!

In terms of what needs work, not a lot. However, I did feel the overly simple artwork let the story down. Most of it has a ´clip art´ feel to it giving the story a cheap look. Personally, I would go the whole hog and illustrate it properly, or simply take them out. Better do it correctly or not at all.

A refreshing take on an old fairy tale, "Socks" is a mystery set in a children's home. When Lotti's parents died in a car crash, she was sent to live at Riverside. She wants desperately to be loved as part of a family again, but life is not all bad - she has wonderful friends at the home and the staff are caring. Then, one day, she wakes up wearing a pair of beautiful socks. Where did they come from, and why is she so tired? As in the original story, the answer lies in a Narnia-like world where Lotti might find the love she seeks. Yet will she chase that rainbow or stand by her best friend?

With snappy dialogue and riveting descriptions, there is plenty to keep young readers engaged. This sweet tale of love and friendship is a wonderful antidote to the cynicism of modern life.

Thoroughly enjoyable retelling of a fairytale. I loved the little orphan girls from different countries who all bunked together at the orphanage. The care they showed each other truly made them family. After confiding in one of the boys, a Sherlock Holmes type, he undertakes to solve the mystery of the exhausted little girls. The result is a journey into a land of magic and fantasy. I actually liked it more than the original fairytale! I received this ARC from Book Sirens and this is my honest review.

Socks!

Such a sweet and creative retelling! I love story of the 12 dancing princesses. I have always had a soft spot for orphans and enjoys reading books that feature them so of course this book was just right for me. <3
