When the Buckeyes Fall

The year was 1861. Sixteen-year-old Hannah Casey was crouched down in the dirt below the open window of the little one room church, listening in as her father spoke to the men of their community. It was a small group, because only six homes were sprinkled along the banks of the creek in this remote mountain community in northwest Arkansas. Her father had been to town, a trip he only took about twice a year. Hannah listened as he told the others that Fort Sumter had been fired upon, and our country was now in the midst of a Civil War. Hannah wasn't sure what that meant, but over the next few years she would find out. She would grow from an innocent teenager to a strong, seasoned, dependable woman. She would go through more heartache and pain than any one person should have to endure. But, on the other side of it all, she would find her salvation. She would find the path that would lead her away from all that she once knew, into a future filled with promise.

Hometown together

I really liked reading this book because I am also from Clarksville, AR and have been to Catalpa many times. I will now think of it as Buckeye.
I liked how Long related the horrors of the civil war from a civilian's point of view, not backing away from the gruesome aspects that people endured during that period of time.
I enjoyed meeting and getting to know each of the characters and growing with them. They are all my favorite.
I recommend reading this historical fiction. It was delightful.

I in fact thoroughly enjoyed the book. It was a very emotional read for me because of the book taking place in during the time of the Civil War in Arkansas. I know a lot about that history here in the River Valley and what the people in our area went through during those times. I feel like there could have been a little more on the love story there at the end. I loved the use of scripture in the story and how I feel that the story was uplifting there in the end.

Wonderful story and well developed characters. Loved the flow of adventure and drama in the lives of this tiny community. Gave insight in the hardships of common folk during the Civil War. A pleasure 😊

This is a must read. She keeps you captivated on every page. This is a very good fictional representation of what families in the Johnson County Arkansas area lived during the civil war. Even though these families were a days ride from the nearest town they too were deeply affected by the troublesome times. She covers it all from joy to grief, from happy to sad, from good times to bad, from birth to death. And love all around.There is something here for everyone.
